Hatem Ben Arfa has yet to convince Alan Pardew he is worthy of a first-team start. Sir Alex Ferguson rues his decision to bench Javier Hernandez at Chelsea, Martin O’Neill vows to be patient with Wayne Bridge, while John Obi Mikel returns to training for Chelsea this morning:

Alan Pardew has admitted Hatem Ben Arfa faces a real battle to establish himself in the Newcastle first XI. The Frenchman found himself dropped for last Sunday’s home game against Villa, with Pardew opting for the work-rate of James Perch in midfield instead. With Papiss Demba Cisse joining Demba Ba up front, Ben Arfa’s preferred role, tucked in behind a lone forward, looks out of the question, given Pardew’s penchant for a 4-4-2. The Magpies boss said:

Hatem still hasn’t quite grasped, in my opinion, this Premier League. He’s got unbelievable talent, but he’s not used to it. He’s got to fight now to get in this team. He could still have a massive impact on this season, but we need to see him at his best. He isn’t out of the picture yet.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Javier Hernandez may be set for an increase in game time, after his performance at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Mexican has fallen behind Danny Welbeck in the pecking order this term and has started just two of United’s last eleven league matches but, having climbed off the bench to grab the equaliser at Chelsea, has given his manager plenty to mull over, as Ferguson admitted:

To be honest, I think I should have played Chicharito from the start. When he came on he had them on toast. He really put pressure on them with his movement and positional play. Danny Welbeck is a terrific player and he is going to be a top player, but when Chicharito came on it was a different game.

This seems to raise questions against Welbeck’s first-team prospects, then. He has started four of United’s last six up front and has been the preferred partner for Wayne Rooney up front, but Hernandez’s display and his manager’s subsequent comments raises question marks over his role over the new few gameweeks.

Martin O’Neill is keen to allow Wayne Bridge time to settle in at Sunderland before handing him a start. With the loan signing some way short of match fitness, the Black Cats boss is prepared to utilise Kieran Richardson at left-back until Bridge is ready to step up. O’Neill alluded to Bridge’s previous loan spell last term as the reason behind his thinking.

He is just settling down. I am mindful he was thrown in at the deep end last year. At West Ham it was thrust upon him. I would like him to see the surroundings a bit more. It was pleasing to get into the Norwich game, that was encouraging enough for him.

John Obi Mikel has returned to training for Chelsea today. The Nigerian has been sidelined since the gameweek 17 draw at Spurs, missing a run of games that have seen Andre Villas-Boas’ side pick up just two wins from seven. With the likes of Ramires injured, Frank Lampard a doubt, and Michael Essien still finding his feet since returning from long-term injury, Mikel -if he proves his fitness- will give the Blues a midfield boost ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton.

FPL-wise, last night’s goalless draw at Anfield saw Glen Johnson yet again lead the way for bonus points. With Jose Enrique missing out with a hamstring problem, Johnson moved to left-back, with Martin Kelly stepping in on the other flank, and his display once more stood out in the EA SPORTS PPI. Johnson grabbed the maximum 3 for the fourth time this season and has now picked up 14, more than any Liverpool player. Clearly, his displays from full-back are ideal for the bonus system, with a combination of defensive work and crossing proving pivotal in his allocation, as the home side recorded their third clean sheet in the last four.

I've seen a fair few comments from people talking about getting rid of Walters now.

I know he's been back in midfield once or twice recently, but players have been missing for those games (Etherington, Shotton), so he could be back OOP soon.

Surely it is worth keeping him for Swansea and Norwich at home and then binning him?

Thinking about moving Walters out soon myself. With McClean in such good form Walters has barely being even starting for me. I might downgrade Walters and upgrade Clichy to either Richards or Kompany.

I understand your attachment to your console at this stage. Stick to what you know. Yeah it was pretty. 3 randoms in one pre season earned me £80 million in transfers! Happened just the once.

I've never resorted to a -4 point deduction to get a player in but I'm thinking about it this week. I'm 8 behind the leader right now.

    Out: Morrison and Bale/Nani
    In: Rooney and Ox (-4)
Leaning towards Bale, he's played awful yesterday and has some tough fixtures ahead

    Current Squad:
D: Enrique, Evans, Kompany, Assou-Ekotto, Cahill
M: Nani, Bale, Murphy, Silva, Dyer
    F: Aguero, Morrison, Zamora
    Bank: 3.4

I will be losing 0.4. So if I transfer him out he wont get back in until next season. Which is exactly why I dont see it as a good option to get rid. I think the others will have to cover him for the rough patch GW.

has to be Caulker, Senderos or Evans (though if you can hold off on Evans until GW28), as Gaz said, Bad K and Enrique are big hitting enough and you have Simpson, so Caulker, Senderos or Bardsley seem your best bets and use the remainder elsewhere.

Bored...but YOU can rate my team for the week if you want to 😛

    Vorm
    Caulker-Richards-Skrtel
    Valencia-Sess-Demps(C)-Silva-Bale
    Ba-RVP

    Bench:Krul-Welbeck-Santon-Shotton

I'm doing Shotton>Kelly before the deadline, so that I can play him instead of Skrtel. 🙂

Faar-king good team. Skrtel ties up a lot of cash for a defender with limited attacking potential plus fixtures not great.

Double Swans is risky, but it's Vorm and Caulker so probably ok. Agree on losing Shotton and Kelly is as a good a bet as anyone. I know people has been moaning at Fulham's lack of CS, but Schwarzer's return should help on that front.

Mid is fine, and though I'd be tempted to play Welbeck, after Sunday there's every chance Chica will start instead (as stated in the article) so I like it. Clint as captain, may we rise or fall together.

Deadzone hours, I usually tend to elaborate my advise since it's usually slow in the morning and open to discussion. B and C then.

    Okay fellas, anyone beat this?

    So far this season:

    226pts sitting on the bench
138pts could have been brought on to improve each weeks score (i.e. better than those who played)

    Current score/ranking = 1,315/100,223

    1,315 + 138 = 1,453pts

Would raise my ranking to 1,142 if I'd picked my team to perfection. Total b*llocks I know, but I found it interesting, especially the points wastage......

Best defender up to 4.8m. I would keep him at least 5 GW's, so no short term punts please.
    Options:

    A) Jevans - cheap utd defender, not good enough fixtures and could be rotated. Still seems like good value even with the benching now and then,
    B) Bardsley - good attacking threat, bad fixtures but that didn't stop them to keep CS's and before,
    C) Caulker - very fond of the lad, looks like Swa bad fixtures passed, so I could keep him for longer,. Already have Vorm so that means doubling.
    D) Kelly - cheap, cheaper then Senderos who is injury doubt. Already have Senderos so that means doubling and looks like Ful ain't keeping CS's. Maybe with Schwarzi back they will improve their defensive form,
    E) Double on New, cause I already have Simpson, but there CS's looks like impossible to predict.
    F) Somebody else

    Thoughts please,
I think this will help to many lads looking for defensive transfer,

    Cheers to all

Think Evans or Bardsley are your bets for sure. United more likely to keep CS (esp from GW28) and as you say he's cheap enough that you don't worry as much about rotation (although it's my belief he remains 1st choice). Bardsley, you have basically said why he's a good option. Caulker is definitely a possibility it all depends on how much you trust them (remember City still have to go Liberty in GW28)

BTW Daniel are you still planning on no Silva, had a big discussion on this last night on here.

I have Kun already (along with Richards) The other option is to lose Tony V to Siggi (or to Surman and play McLean every week) This would be GW26 btw when Yaya should be back.

you mean with the Europa League due to restart?

Yes he is, Mancini likely to play Zabaleta at rb in Europa. Dzeko also becomes a major rotation threat with that and Mario's return. Aggy tends to be rested for Europe as City's priority has always been the league.

What do people think to getting BAE now? He seems to grab assists more often now...nailed on and the next few fixtures aren't THAT bad.

NEWCASTLE arsenal MAN UNITED everton STOKE

3 potential cleanies in there with matches 1, 4, 5 and after that Spurs' fixtures are great to the end of the season.

Have a strong feeling he'll finish as the top defender and he is due to rise tonight. AGAIN.

Wish I hadn't ditched him on the WC. Even though I would have benched him this week I still think he's a good option at that price.
Although he's converging with Walker price-wise who is possibly the better pick still.

Tough call, I'd find a 3 sided-dice and assign a number to Ba, McLean and Siggy and see who it lands on.

This is why I'm sorta happy I picked Gerbil over Ba, no issue over who to bench this week (every cloud and all that)
