Yesterday’s confirmation of a double gameweek 28 for both Liverpool and Everton has had a significant effect on the Watchlist rankings. The red half of Merseyside, in particular, looks primed for investment, given their subsequent schedule over the next couple of months. The rankings have now been fully updated to reflect form and the fixture list and, as always, you’ll find them in your right-hand sidebar. Read on for a summary of the key movements and factors at play…

Goalkeepers

The keeper situation always presents a conundrum for Fantasy managers, with Tim Krul and Michel Vorm established in so many squads. Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer climbs to our top spot to offer the strongest alternative over the forthcoming Gameweeks; he works well with either Krul or Vorm over the next few fixtures and offers cover of a Fulham back four handed a favourable run of opponents.

Villa’s Shay Given and Blackburn’s Paul Robinson also have fixtures in their favour, while Bolton’s Adam Bogdan is undoubtedly the most intriguing budget option on offer. Outstanding fixtures in the coming month are balanced by a doubt over his starting role, however, with Owen Coyle threatening to reinstate Jussi Jaaskelainen. Should Bogdan hold his start, at 4.0, he clearly presents a strong option as a partner to a mid-price option in our squads.

Norwich’s John Ruddy is also a possibility. The Canaries had recorded back-to-back home clean sheets prior to last week’s Carrow Road loss to United but, with Wigan and Wolves paying visit in the next four, Ruddy has the potential to return the points.

Defenders

Vincent Kompany’s position at the top of our rankings is surely not in question. He’s now clearly emerged as the most secure option in a City back four that has kept four clean sheets in their last six league matches. While Joleon Lescott is an alternative, he could see eventual rotation with Kolo Toure; Micah Richards has given way to Pablo Zabaleta in the last two league outings.

Jonny Evans is another player who surely has little to prove to Fantasy managers. Now established in United’s back four and clearly favoured by Sir Alex Ferguson, at 4.5 he demands selection given the run of fixtures ahead.

While Ryan Taylor holds third, his grip could be tenuous should his starting role come under threat, paving the way for Danny Simpson to surpass him as the preferred option in Alan Pardew’s defence. Fulham’s rearguard, with Stephen Kelly the obvious budget option, should be well fancied given their schedule. John Arne-Riise and Brede Hangeland are the other, more expensive and potentially profitable options to consider here, if there are funds available.

Liverpool’s Martin Skrtel comes into our top five as a result of Liverpool’s double fixtures in Gameweek 28 – the Slovakian centre-back is showing strong form with a substantial threat from Liverpool’s set-pieces. That’s enough to see him rank higher than the previously well-fancied Jose Enrique, although both look decent propositions given the schedule ahead.

Everton’s Leighton Baines is another to benefit from the Gameweek 28 double, although his encounters with Spurs and Liverpool seem unlikely to offer defensive returns. Baines’ set-piece role has been reduced by the presence of Royston Drenthe in the Everton starting XI and with Steven Pienaar unavailable against parent club Spurs, the Dutchman will likely start that first fixture. Baines is, nonetheless, a potent attacking threat down the left-flank and represents a handy differential for those with defensive funds available.

Further down the defensive rankings, the likes of David Wheater and Scott Dann present the best options in the Bolton and Blackburn defences respectively, offering goal threat from set-pieces to accompany fixtures that hand the possibility of budget clean sheets.

Midfield

This is one area of our teams ripe for a shake-up. The form of Stephane Sessegnon and Clint Dempsey – formerly mainstays and established members of our top five in the Watchlist, is now under scrutiny. Dempsey has returned just one assist in his last three, with evidence of a reduced goal threat, while Sessegnon has stuttered somewhat, with question marks raised by the drubbing at the hands of West Brom last time out. Both will likely need to produce this weekend to ensure that they postpone a trend of sales.

Around them, City’s David Silva and Tottenham’s Gareth Bale remain solid – their position in our squads strengthened by price rises that will likely see them held through any dips in form. An assist apiece at the weekend, the duo remain atop the Watchlist rankings while form continues to simmer.

There are likely to be two or three spots in our midfield up for grabs, then, with a raft of intriguing options available to help shake things up. Juan Mata is still the safe option – like Silva, he has a degree of consistency with regular assists remaining his main source of income. Fixtures are a mixed bag for the Spaniard, with a potential blank Gameweek to come should Chelsea see off Birmingham in next week’s FA Cup replay.

Yaya Toure offers the potential to double up on the City midfield, although he seems better suited as a cheaper replacement for his Spanish team-mate, for those brave enough to turn their back on Silva’s steady stream of points. Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is perhaps a more intriguing option in the same bracket, although with Robin Van Persie installed, again there’s a sniff of overkill here.

With Antonio Valencia’s fitness still a concern, budget alternatives might just be the way to seek the differential- West Brom’s James Morrison and Bolton’s loan star Ryo Miyaichi present the two most palatable options. Morrison’s form is undeniable, while Miyaichi has fixtures that should give him the platform to demonstrate his talents in the weeks to come.

Forwards

With Robin Van Persie yet again demonstrating his consistency with a goal and assist return in the win over Spurs, there can be little debate as to his place at the top of the rankings, despite the charge from Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, with fixtures in their favour.

Both Rooney and Suarez are climbers and remain firmly in our thoughts for the month ahead. The latter has newly emerged as a consideration following the announcement of Liverpool’s double Gameweek, of course, but, like Rooney, Suarez enjoys encouraging fixtures through March and April that promise to see the pair enjoy increased profits.

For now, both Sergio Aguero and Demba Ba hold that pair off, although there’s little doubt that we’ll see Aguero drop as City’s fixtures hand them tough trips to Swansea and Stoke in the short-term. We know all about the Argentine’s form on the road and with Rooney and Suarez facing more favourable schedules, Aguero looks set for heavy sales following this weekend’s meet with Bolton.

There are credible options outside of this group of five for those Fantasy managers looking to mix it up. Peter Odemwingie carries outstanding form into meetings with Chelsea and United before his schedule improves, while Blackburn’s Yakubu has the opportunity to boost his goal tally with obliging home games that could yet lift Rovers out of the relegation mire.

Grant Holt is your budget option, meanwhile – with strong form and a run of decent fixtures, Holt looks to have cemented his starting role in Paul Lambert’s side, with Steve Morison seemingly out of favour. The Canaries skipper is on spot-kicks and already has the ten goals this season we predicted in our pre-season projections; we’ve more on him in a full Watchlist article to come.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Best GK combo from GW28 onwards? I'm currently between these 2 - which is best, and am I missing any other obvious combos?

    Schwarzer & Mignolet – combined cost 9.2m

LIV/avl, SWA, QPR, NOR, TOT/bol, CHE/eve, WOL, WIG, BOL, SUN, mun/tot

    Schwarzer & Bogdan – combined cost 8.8m
QPR, SWA, BLA, NOR, FUL, CHE, TOT, WIG, eve, WBA/SUN, sto/tot

    Mignolet & Bogdan - combined cost 8.4m
QPR, SWA, QPR, wol, FUL, eve, WOL, SWA, BOL, WBA, MUN/sto

This is actually swaying me towards Mignolet and Bogdan, with Kelly at the back for FUL defensive coverage....

I was just sayin', on the other page...

Keepers are worth more than an av. 4.5 a piece. I'm putting 11 into mine. Some v nice run-in fixtures for the likes of Friedel and Reina, the latter also having a bus-parky-looking DGW to kick off with.

Combine with a dash of Vorm or a sprinkling of Al Habsi.. recipe for success.

          im not sure Roy...

if your budget is stretched (which it usually is) I believe goalies to have the best value

this means that even if you get les points with, say, Vorm than Hart, if that allows you to upgrade from for example suarez to aguero, you should get more points overall

    Hi all,

    My current team
    Sorenson, Bogdan
    Jevans, Enrique, Caulker, Simpson, Lescott
    Silva, Dempsy, Bale, Maclean, Surman
    RVP, Ba, Aguero

1.4m in the bank, no FT

I'd like to do Sorenson --> Reina given LIV's DGW and good fixtures after the ARS game. Also, Begovic was in goal for STO last week. While Bogdan will play City this weekend.

But I am about 0.6 short to get Reina and to release cash, I need to sell either Silva (BOL), Dempsey (WOL), or Bale (MU then away to eve).

Is it crazy to sell Bale (bought at 8.3) now and then buy back at 9.7 in GW31 ? If sel Bale, who will eb a good replacement for unde 8.0 m?

    thanks

Sorry I have 1 FT this week, so Bale to ?? and Sorenson - Reina will cost me -4.

Next week, I plan to do Aguero to Suarez for the DGW, then switch to Rooney in GW29

I sold Bale last week, but I got him at 9.0m rather than 8.3m. Personally I think you lose too much value to warrant dropping him for 4 games, plus he's still capable of scoring in the big games.

Assuming you no longer have your WC, I would perhaps save the transfer this week and then do 2-3 next week. This week, If Sorenson (NOR) plays then great, but if not Bogdan could still get a lot of save points against MCY. Again depending on what you got Silva for, next week I'd look to do Lescott, Silva & Aguero -> Johnson/Skrtel, Nani & Rooney. Perhaps leave out the Silva -> Nani trade actually.

Stevie G, really, ENR? He may not even start both fixtures, considering how much he has been rotated. Then you have to factor in the fact that he is way way way more expensive then he is worth, and you have a real problem. Don't tell me you gave up on Silva for him!

Possibly a one-two week punt Newman. Then, back to Nani. Not worth it?

Well Silva will mostly have a blank in gw29 if Chelsea win. Also he costs 10.4 mil to me, so I could get him in later if need be. Really need a super dynamite in midfield.

I'd agree if Valencia would be more nailed-on. I'm afraid Valencia will shift back to RB with Smalling now injured too! Young looked pretty good for England too.

              Surely Nani is nailed-on?

I would think Nani is nailed on, but not on the right.

I also think Valencia will not play right back: Jones is back, remember.

No, I don't think you should play it this week. I think there is an argument for you getting in Pool players for one week, and then setting your team up for the rest of the year with it AFTER GW 28, but not before, in my opinion.

Okay 3 options. Which one would you suggest?

                    A) Use 2FTs this gw & WC in gw28.
                    B) Gamble on Liv att/def & WC in gw29.
                    C) WC after gw29. (Hope for one more DGW / final 4-week gamble)

Yeah, I'm very tempted to get some attacking LIV coverage for the DGW, switching them out the following week, and I'd only be interested in Suarez or perhaps Gerrard.

Friedel is the cheapest, secure way into the TOT defence, which has great long term fixtures. But is he worth the extra 1.3m over Migs?

Was impressed with Arsenal at the w/e yeah - I think your guys also had a very off day and it made us look better than we actually were, but hopefully we can kick on from here and really challenge for 3rd/4th. Why can't Walcott finish like that more often!!! Makes the run in very interesting now!!

Skip liverpool offense, pal. You're just asking for 4 points each. You'll consider it a waste if you take them.

Friedel is just a toughie. One would really have to screw up their defense for him, but yeah, I see the upside. Is he worth the extra, well.....I am starting to think so.

I think you may be right - swaying towards just 2 LIV defenders for the double....

I'm now deciding between a) Enrique & Friedel and b) GJ & Mignolet. I think a) edges it...

Walcott is THE most frustrating player to have in your team. He makes the likes of Lennon look consistent. But, on his day, he can beat anyone. Just a shame that day happens once every 100 days.

      2) GJ worth the extra 0.6m over Skrtel?
      3) No interest in Suarez?

        1) King seems nailed-on "when fit". Darn cheap - taking a gamble with those fixtures. Plus got good cover if he doesn't start. He's a 4th defender on most weeks.

        2) GJ has the highest PPG of them all and plays almost like a RW or even striker at times. Could be an interesting differential, the ex-Chelsea man 🙁

        3) Suarez has no place in my frontline. If I had that much cash, I'd rather adebayor with his form.

          1) I guess he'll never come on as a sub, so perhaps worth the gamble...

          2) This is tempting me to swap Enrique/Skrtel -> GJ. Basically gives me the choice of Friedel & Enrique, or Mignolet & GJ. Best bet?

I would hold WC as you 2FT next week should be enough to have enough cover for DGW. Imo, Liverpool DGW fixtures (sun/EVE) are not "mouth watering" enough to warrant loading up on. Remember the last DGW we had the january WC to bail us out of some horrible short term punts.

I am finding that transfers are so valuable this time of year and hits are never good. Especially when we are battling on all fronts (CL etc.). Quite possibly you will have to dump GJ and Steve G in the future. Also, your GK situation might need fixing. Therefore i can see a possible 3 transfers in the near to mid future needed to correct the DGW punt. No to mention any injuries that may arise at any time!

Lol. Muchas gracias, CF. Wish you all luck for the Ruk-ie clash this GW. He's a tricky h2h customer, as Fratboy found out last week. 😉

Your reasoning makes sense, actually. You don't wanna build a WC team which has players you need to get rid of in the near future. I'm convinced now, I think - no need to rush the WC. Also, I could wait for the Spurs fixtures to improve and load up on Friedel/BAE if the bank allows me.

I'm a huge fan of MON and I've had 2-3 players ever since he came in. So, however biased my opinion maybe, I definitely think Sunderland will fight it out for the Top 6.

bad news: my replacement who i am to train tonight has not shown up yet

good news: if they were here, i wouldnt be able to chat much.

bad news: if they blow off the gig, then i may not be switching my shift as soon as i thought

    good news: more DEAD ZONE

which would you do for gw 28? current team:

    Al Habsi (Sorensen)

    Richards, Verm, Evans, Senderos, Santon

    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sesegnon, Dyer

    RVP, Aguero, Ba

    a) verm, aguero->enrique, rooney, -4
    b) verm, aguero, sessegnon-> enrique, rooney, nani, -8
    c) verm, aguero, richards-> enrique, rooney, skrtel, -8
    d) verm, sessegnon-> g johnson, valencia, -4

the last time i took an 8 point hit while bringing in nani, i had my best gw of the season. something like a top 5k gw score. im not totally adverse. so i am attracted to B. and with C, its an opportunity to dump richards. hmmmm

yeah im really digging B. problem is i will have to make early transfers to do it. and if nani goes up before deadline, it may be all for naught. 🙁

also if city/chelsea miss gw29, i will need to dump richards, i need to dump him anyway, i feel like i can do it and break even or better gw28, rather than using my only FT gw29 to make the same move.

now i know ive gone over the deep end.

still, i refuse to think suarez has reached torres-like levels of fantasy ineffectiveness. and enough people will justifiably be turned away from bringing him in despite the DGW, so potential there for gaining some serious ground.

Elnino: in response to your earlier question: I think I read your original question right, and my statement is roughly that I basically support the plan you labeled as 'b,'....get some pool players, then form your team after that.

canadian: I'm still not worried about Young, as it has seemed clear to me that even when healthy, Valencia is preferred. He is just too hard of a worker. Sure, I could be wrong, but I think if youre gonna go with one of those three, go with the one that has logged the most minutes and costs the least, minimizing the risk. I don't think Nani is too effective if he plays on the right( and I believe he will) and I think Young is the most rotatable, so I like Val for what he is.

      Krul
      Caulker Komp Senderos
      Sess Demp Bale Silva
      RVP Kun Ba
Subs - Mig McC Simpson Evans
      2 FT Bank 0.3

gw27 - Sess > Siggy (play him over Mc)
      gw28 - Kun > Roo ; Send > Enrique
gw29 - Demp > Val OR Silva > Nani (depending on the blank gw)

Hmm you wouldn't miss MUN/LIV defence too much in gw28. WBA are in hot scoring form and Liv don't exactly have a super-awesome DGW to warrant more than one Liv def.

If you can afford Rooney & Enrique for a hit, that should do.

Have to disagree with you there. Totally understand why you're saving it with the team/transfers you have in hand, just don't save it too long or the season will be over!! 🙂

I think SUN have over achieved in recent weeks, and the thrashing by WBA will have hit confidence, so I expect a low scoring affair at the SOL, plus I fancy Gerrard to notch a penalty in a 2-0 win at home to EVE.

Getting dangerously close to my GW28 WC team now - 1 question remains:

    a) Friedel & Enrique, or
    b) Mignolet & G Johnson to fill the gaps below

    XXX, Bogdan
    Skrtel, XXX, JEvans, Kelly, Caulker
    Gerrard**, Dempsey, Walcott, Pilkington, Mclean
    RVP, Rooney, Ba

** just for the DGW. He goes -> Nani in GW29 (thanks to El Nino for the idea...)

      A, reasoning already discussed.

And also, I wouldnt bother with Gerrard. I bet Nani outscores him that week, due to rotation and general poor scoring for price. That said, I like Valencia over either, but certainly Nani over Gerrard.

You need Rooney from gw28, CF. Suarez is a potential 4-pointer waiting to happen, he may get lucky and get an assist. But that's it. With Rooney, there's HUGE upside making him a great (C) choice for gw28.

You don't happen to have an FT this week to downgrade Sess? If not, take the hit in gw28. Rooney's totally worth it. I'd do:

      Kun > Roo
      Rich > Enr
      Sess > Siggy/Mc

I think it depends on what your team is like at the moment. I'm in the same boat, and because I have no MUN or LIV players (when ideally you'd probably want 5-6 from next week on), I've decided to WC next week. After all, it may be the only DGW we get.

Had a quick look at your team and I think you have enough reason to WC next week - no LIV players and only JEvans from MUN, plus the likes of Hart & Walters probably also need to go. Up to you of course, but if I was in your shoes, I'd play both freebies this week and then WC next week. Also don't like the idea of losing Dempsey just yet - he can explode and has good short term fixtures.

I am happy enough having just one Liverpool player for the DGW and I will have Rooney and Evans from Manu which I feel is also enough.

Gerrard is a 2/3 week possible punt. If you had to chose one offensive player for GW28 / 29 from Liverpool who would you chose?

It's got to be either Gerrard (pens, the odd set pieces?) or Suarez I think. Only problem with Suarez is that there are so many great other options up front (RVP, Rooney, Ba, Adebayor, Aguero). I'm going Gerrard for probably just the DGW before swapping him to Nani.

Both are perfectly reasonable moves. It might actually be the right time to get rid of Dempsey due to the swans game being the only likely fixture in which he may get points as he usually does nothing away.

I don't want to wreck your plans or anything but GW 26 has already gone.. the moves wouldn't have been great anyhow so dont worry too much.

Kun to bucktooth possibl for GW 28 and then agree you could switch him to the pig GW29

    Had
    Friedel Mignolet
    Caulker Lescott Simpson Evans Kompany
    Bale Silva McClean Ox Dyer
    Graham RVP Ba

Did Friedel > Schwarzer as a more long term and to free up funds.

Now focusing on GW 28, i have 5.1 Mil in the bank 😀
Alternatively, i can spread out my hits over this week and next to be in chasing distance.

    Ideas, thoughts?

    Krul, Mignolet
    Raylor, Kompany, Kolarov, Kelly, Caulker
    Dempsey, Bale, Sess, Valencia, Siggy
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

0.1 in the bank and 1FT

    GW27 : save transfer
GW28 : Aguero and Kolarov -> Suarez and Enrique
GW29 : Kompany and Suarez -> Evans and Rooney for 4pt hit

and bring back Kompany in GW31 or 33

    any suggestions/advice? thanks 😀

    Looking good for Shotton....

"Playing in midfield is very much a long-term option for him."

Pulis described Shotton's performance against Swansea on Sunday as his best yet in a Stoke shirt.

I would read between the lines and fathom the words 'long-term'. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about his starting place just yet

in a series dating 78 years, the US beat Italy for the first time, and they did it on Italy's turf. Dempsey, once again showing his work ethic scored the winner. it wasn't pretty. but the result was bellissimo!!!

and still, 98% of american sports enthusiasts have no idea who clint dempsey is. mind-boggling.

If MLS every becomes popular he will be a legend for Americans in later decades. Still think the "girly European" mentality is still too strong in the states though.

Is there much diving in MLS? That might hurt too. Personally I get a laugh outa TFC games. Throwing streamers, loonies, and beers at opposing players! Class. But funny

MLS is slowly building toward watchability. poor defending cancelling out poor creativity in attack, every aspect of the game i love to watch is downgraded. so its a tough spot. i want to support the league in the states and see it grow, but its hard to dedicate time to following it as much as i do the PL.

As soon as Edmonton FC are in it, then I'm converted.

Its an ugly and unpopular league with not much youth talent passing through (my favorite aspect of the game), but there is nothing better than actually going to games

Also, curious about price falls. Why did the likes of Raylor and Ba (and others) seem to have to reach about 150-200% to fall when they were red carded, but Valencia seems to fall as normal on 100%? I considered holding Valencia, one reason being that I figured it would take him ages to fall, but glad I didn't now.

Anyone tempted by Liv or Eve players for the dgw?

Not sure I can be arsed with either of them to be honest with you.

Other than the defences it's hard to know which outfield players are going to start for either team and Gerrard is always injured, Suarez misses too many chances and Everton have 2 tough matchups.

The only Liverpool player worthy of a punt in my mind is Kuyt, but again, never a sure thing that he'll start both games. He seems to do well in Mersey derbies I think.

Probably better off just stocking up on Man Utd players for GW29 instead?

      Neither.

I wouldn't get Adam, he will more than likely disappoint (even with a DGW).
I think Sess has gone off the boil and replacing Suarez will be tricky.

      Rooney, Val, McClean
      or
      Suarez, Nani, Maxi?

Or make or break DGW of:
      Belamy, Gerrard and Drenthe 🙂

I agree with Elwood. Alternatively you could do Suarez, Valencia/Adam, McClean which should leave you enough to straight swap Suarez to Rooney in GW29 without hits.

    Morning,

Is City - Che only game that is in danger for gw29?
And if Chelsea go trough, has there been any rumours is that game supposed to play in midweek like other games?

I would be very happy without that game and could then just bench kompany & silva.

If Chelsea beat Birmingham in the FA cup then the City v Chelsea game will be postponed so they will have a blank gameweek. I'm not sure if there is a chance the rescheduled game could still fall into GW29
