For those of you who didn’t see last week’s first foray into this new area, these articles aim to highlight the potential that a simple referee assignment can bring to the Gameweek proceedings. If last week was anything to go by, it seems a worthwhile exercise.

The north London derby was the game and Mike Dean the main protagonist. The man in the middle lived up to his reputation with not just the anticipated penalty – duly given for a foul on Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and dispatched by Emmanuel Adebayor – but also the predicted flurry of yellow cards at the Emirates last Sunday.

Eight cautions were made in total during the resounding 5-2 home win, with two of those earning a red card for the new England captain, Scott Parker. It’s only fair then that Mr Dean, the pick of last week’s trio of Michaels, gets the headline slot this time out.

Mike Dean

Now finding himself atop the season totals for penalties given (with nine so far) Dean has been handed a second consecutive derby assignment, as he treks the 280 miles up the A1 to take the reins of the Tyne-Wear derby, where Newcastle and Sunderland do battle at the Sports Direct Arena.

While Sunderland sit bottom of the penalties table with just a single spot-kick awarded in the league this season (won and missed by Seb Larsson), Newcastle are not much better off, with just two themselves. When we look at penalties conceded, however, that’s when the ears prick up. No team have more spot-kicks awarded against them than Newcastle (eight) and, while only six have found their way past Tim Krul, it’s still an omen that the tricky James McLean or Stéphane Sessègnon could take advantage of; Newcastle’s defenders best beware, then. Fresh from his two goals for Sweden in midweek, Larsson is still the presumed penalty taker despite that December miss and is in our thoughts this week, as is Demba Ba for the hosts.

Phil Dowd

Second up in our analysis is another refereeing heavyweight, with the Stoke-based official lined up to take charge of his 20th Premier League match this season, as West Brom take on Chelsea. Saturday’s game will pit the team with the most yellow cards this season (Chelsea, 55) against the referee to have handed out the greatest number of cautions (76 in 19 games). Don’t be surprised, then, to see either Raul Meireles or David Luiz find themselves in the book and walking a tightrope through the rest of the match. In the case of the Portuguese midfielder, that tightrope would continue into the next week should he collect a booking, as it would be Meireles’ ninth of the campaign and put him one away from a 2 match ban.

Andre Marriner

Looking down the table of referees, Marriner is not one that stands out at first glance. His 49 yellow cards puts him just sixth amongst his colleagues, and his three red cards again rank him just off the pace setters. However, factor in that the West Midlands whistler has taken charge of just 12 games this season, and he starts to look a more interesting prospect.

For his thirteenth top level outing this term, Marriner will be taking charge of the match between Wigan and Swansea– this pits the team who’ve committed the most fouls (Wigan with 335) against the team with the least (Swansea’s 216). When you also consider that Wigan have been involved in the highest number of penalty awards this term (14, six awarded and eight conceded), then a punt on current penalty taker Jordi Gomez, or his penalty saving specialist goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi, might be on the cards.

Everyone is down on Gerrard.. why?

I did some checking and he has started every game since his return vs Stoke except vs Wolves and i think he had a knock that week as he wasnt even on the bench, and also Adam has started all of those same fixtures except 1, so seems like both are nailed in to me....

Gerrard has a knock this week too.

I'd say most of the reason people are down on them is that they're not great points scorers, as liverpool don't score enough goals, and they're both expensive..

fair enough, all valid points i guess.. seems like Suarez just shoots too much with little return on goals, but Gerrard is a proven finisher, takes the PKs, and he's likely to increase the overall team goal-production with his passing, meaning assists to boot..

i guess im really trying to find reasons to talk myself out of spending my 4.9m surplus on him but with 2 heated games next week i cant shake the thought that he is gonna bring in something for points, if not a big haul, and then i can always use that price to bring in Bale/Nani/Valencia in GW29..

        thanks for input either way

So many of the identikit players I don't see getting the points this week.

Dempsey - Pogrebnyak seems to have taken his scoring role
Bale - Might not even start and even if he does it's against very tough opposition with his attacking role seemingly diminished when Ade & Saha play
Silva - He's involved in so much City play but doesn't seem so hot on getting the 2nd last or last touch on the ball...
Sess - Is he even back in the country yet?
Valencia - By all accounts definitely not playing.
RVP - Away to Liverpool, possibly the league's best defence.
Aguero - He just doesn't go beyond one goal of late and only scored last week because Robinson gifted it to him on a plate
Ba - Cisse is taking some of his goals and he's against an incredibly tight Sunderland side

Dempsey - scores at home and is against a poor side
Bale - at home if he starts the United defence ain't great but I don't see a huge score
      Silva - 5-7, standard silva
      Sess - agreed
      Valencia - won't play
      RVP - agreed
Aguero - If he starts still a good shout - one goal is still 6-9 points, good enough to me

I have this weird thing where I don't like captaining a player in the early kick off although how could I forget what he done the last time he played in an early kick off.. He is an option but I just don't see many goals.. I'll play it safe this week & gamble when there isn't such an obvious captain choice..

Quick tactical point on Wigan vs. Swansea. If you have Naylor or Rangel this week I reckon they're a good play.

Wigan play 3-5-2/5-3-2 with wingbacks as their only width these days (not sure if that'll change for this game but it hasn't very often lately so assuming they stick), who should get forced back by the Swansea wingers who play high up on each side. This should leave the Swans fullbacks with acres of space to motor into, and with a fairly congested midfield, they'll be the obvious out-balls, giving them as big a chance as ever for attacking returns.

To counteract this, Wigan could drop a forward back and play 5-4-1/3-4-3 or just get their central midfielders to go and close down the full backs, but either scenario will likely lead to Swansea dominating the centre of midfield. The major reason for this dominance is because Wigan will be using 3 centre backs up against one forward in Danny Graham; one to mark Graham, one to sweep up behind and one redundant man. With this in mind it makes no sense for Wigan to play a back 3 vs. Swansea but they have done so against a lone forward already this season I believe.

The only slight worry for the Swans defence is that Wigan are likely to be a threat on the break with 2 forwards up against the two Swansea centre backs (no spare man) and the pace of Moses and Rodallega.

Thanks, no worries. If you're backing the Swans (as I am) then we just have to pray that Wigan do go with 3 at the back. Of course there's always other factors at work so we guarantee the match will play out how we predict, but if Wigan go for 3 then I can't see how they can stop Swansea controlling the match and dominating the ball.

Also, some (not terribly encouraging) match pointers from The Guardian:

        • Wigan have kept a clean sheet in all of their last four meetings with Swansea in all competitions

        • Swansea have failed to score in seven of their away league games in 2011-12, more than any other side

        • Wigan have not won any of their last 11 top flight home games (drawn five, lost six)

        • Swansea have committed fewer fouls (210) than any other team in the Premier League this term

        • Gary Caldwell has given away four penalties this season, more than any other player in the division

If Wigan do the sensible thing and go with a back four and wingers...it will be much tighter but should be a good game with two ball-playing sides going toe-to-toe.

Now I hope my predictions come true or I will look rather stupid. 😉

Excellent post, are you a manager?! 😀

All of that analysis makes great sense. I saw Wigan's wingbacks against United and they actually stifled them pretty well until they got a player sent off. If they want to defend, I think they can keep the score pretty low.

Am I right in understanding Wigan will be playing 3-5-2/5-3-2 against a Swansea 4-1-4-1? The midfield overload makes perfect sense then, if Wigan's fullbacks withdraw they're stuck with 3 in midfield. If the Swansea fullbacks push up they'll have 7 in midfield including the holding player. It could be a complete siege.

In addition to the fullbacks you've got to think Siggy as CAM is poised to profit with lots of opportunities to probe a stretched backline?

Thanks. Haha, no, but I'd like to be. Gonna start doing coaching badges once I've finished uni.

You're right there; it was similar against Liverpool at home earlier in the season when they played just Suarez up top. It made more sense to play it vs. Utd who are more of a 4-4-2 than 'pool were, but still they got a 0-0 and looked dangerous on the break so the point stands: if they want to just defend and play on the break, then 3 at the back can work; with the 3 and then the wingbacks strung across the backline, space for through balls should be minimal.

However, I don't know if Wigan will want to do that at home against a team who are near them when they need wins to get out of their current mess. I could be wrong but I see Martinez as a proud man who will not want to just admit that the Swansea side he left are simply a better side in possession and therefore drop deep and let them have the ball. If they come high up the pitch, Swansea could profit with balls in behind the wingbacks for Sinclair and Dyer; Wigan don't really press the ball well like Stoke did last week.

If the danger of the full backs leads to a stretching of Wigan's midfield 3 (you could certainly see Diame bombing out there to close them down), then Siggy should get a lot of space. It'd be sensible for a Wigan CB to then step up and mark him, but do they have the nous to do that? I'm also not sure about Beasejour's defensive ability (it may be good, I'm genuinely not sure!) If Dyer can get at him and take him on then Wigan will be very vulnerable (think Sturridge vs. David Jones earlier in the season at the DW, when he tore him to shreds).

One final consideration is the state of the pitch; not conducive to good football, which may count against Swansea, but Wigan like to play a bit as well so I don't think it's too big a problem.

An interesting game in prospect and will probably be tight, but Swansea should have just enough about them. I see a 1-0...maybe Dyer goal, Siggy

Team for this week is set:

    Vorm
    Richards, Raylor, Taiwo
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey(vc), Mata
    RVP, Ba, Aguero(c)

    Krul, McClean, Shotton, Kelly

Saving the transfer. Subs/captain all in order? I'm tempted to play Shotton after last week but unsure.

Sorry for the repost on bottom of prior page

Struggling with me Def starters this week. Who to play on Def?

    Richards (BOL)/Senderos (WOL)/Naylor (wig)/Simpson(SUN)/Jevans (tott).

My inital thought was was; Richards/Senderos/Simpson all at Home

I figure that if Senderos does not play, my first sub would be Naylor. However would hate to have a 1pt cameo point form Senderos.

Any advice would be apprieciated! Thanks in advance!

Me - was hoping for loads of DGW's but doesn't look like it'll happen with better weather this winter and a lack of top English teams in both Europe and FA Cup.

So think I'm going to go for GW31 - City and Spurs both have good fixtures from there.

ok folks assuming I sell Clint for Nani I could replace Taiwo with a 4.9 or less defender if I got GJ in for Richards. If I got Skrtel I could go to 5.3, who should I get.

(Note not thinking of losing Clint next week but maybe in GW30 for United away (or GW32 after Norwich at home) but I think Pog may have nicked his points and Ba to Pog becomes an option.

Getting rid of sinclair is a good option if you have Sig. Moses has a good run in the short term Maybe Miyachi? His fixtures are better in the medium term. This might be the last time you can "waste a transfer" on a 5th midfielder until the end of the season.
