Across the chest of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel’s heavily tattooed body is the Latin slogan, “veni, vidi, vici,” which roughly translates as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” It is a philosophy that typifies his performances at either end of the pitch, with the Slovakian international building up a solid reputation as a fearless defender who offers an added goal threat.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in January 2008 from Zenit Saint Petersburg, Liverpool fans quickly took to Skrtel’s combative approach, naming him man of the match in his first Merseyside derby via the team’s official website.

During the 2008-09 season, he had effectively displaced Daniel Agger as Jamie Carragher’s defensive partner but injuries cut that campaign, and the following one, short. Indeed, it was only last term that Skrtel truly cemented his place as Liverpool’s most valued centreback, when he played every minute of the season.

After missing the first two games of the current campaign due to a calf injury, the 27-year old’s season kicked off in style in Gameweek 3, as Skrtel grabbed a goal and a couple of bonus points at Bolton, returning a 10 point Fantasy haul. Skrtel’s other goal this season came away at Aston Villa in Gameweek 16, when a clean sheet and three bonus points earned him 15 points, his second double digit points score of the season. A goal in last month’s Carling Cup final served as further reminder of his attacking prowess and this season he has also emerged as one of the top performing defenders in terms of goal attempts, supplementing his tally with nine clean sheets and seven bonus points.

With Liverpool’s season dogged by controversy and poor attacking form, investment in their players has been limited so far. Currently the ninth best defender in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points right now with a total of 95, Skrtel is the second top outfield player for the Reds, a single point behind 8.5 priced Charlie Adam’s 96.

Owned by just 5.9% of managers, his initial value of 6.0 has risen by a mere 0.2 since the start of the season but that looks set to change, though, with the upcoming double gameweek 28 seeing Liverpool travel to Sunderland before playing host to Everton.

Indeed, a look at the Reds’ fixtures over the final third of the season from Gameweek 29 onwards (qpr, WIG, new, AVL, bla, FUL, WBA, nor, CHE, swa) has, arguably, just two tricky games- a Gameweek 31 trip to Newcastle and the home match against Chelsea in Gameweek 37. Those Fantasy managers who draft Skrtel in ahead of next week, then, could conceivably play the centre half in virtually all of his side’s remaining matches as Kenny Dalglish attempts to steer his side to a vital fourth place finish.

          Hey CC.

Walters > uber cheapie midfielder sticks out as the best option to me. This should allow you to upgrade one of your cheap defenders to a Liverpool one in time for the DGW next week.

He did play in Rwanda midweek on what looks like a terrible pitch. It was 0-0. I'm sure he'll start but not sure what kind of a stay he had there. The Rwanadans love him apparantly...cheering him during training. He's still a massive star across Africa.

He should be a good differential, so many good options up front though, you almost can't go wrong with any combination of RVP, Aguero, Rooney, Ba, and then other solid options like Graham, Holt, Adebayor, Yakubu, Pogrebnyak, maybe Suarez, Odemwingie....

Anyone noticed how GW27 has become such a sideshow to GW28. Even the scoutcast was dominated by talk of the DGW. I've been experimenting with various permutations for GW28 so much I haven't even though about who I am captaining this week. So distracting.

Anyhow, just to prove my own point and further muddy the waters I think the majority of GW28 issues can be boiled down to this:
    a) Rooney instead of Suarez
    b) Suarez instead of Rooney
    c) Suarez and Rooney (4 pt hit)

Also the first gameweek after an international break is always a bit odd. Lots of rotation, tiredness, injury niggles etc. The team of the week is usually made up of the likes of 5m mids and cheap strikers and other off the wall differentials.

This is going to be one hell of a week for owners of Reo-Coker and Dickson Etuhu.

    Team currently for the weekend:

    Mignolet
    Caulker J Evans Kompany
    Sess Moses Silva Bale
    Aguero RVP Ba

    Subs: Sorensen BAE Simpson Valencia

I have 2 FTs so could bring in someone but really unsure who to be honest, I think I’ll hold Valencia for another week. Maybe trade Sorensen? Only problem is not got any extra £ to do so. And if as everyone is suggesting to load LIV players in I’d like to keep the extra transfer!

Also do I have my subs right? Or should I assume Utd and Spurs won’t keep clean sheets and bring in BAE for attacking potential?

If Agger wasn't injured I'd be VERY tempted by Skrtel but with Carra at the back it's very possible for Liverpool to concede in both games in the DGW. They're still struggling to score so chance of attacking points pretty slim too.

Keep it as it is, play Cahill before Simpson on your bench though. Toon will probably leak a goal.

    RTaylor Taiwo Evan BAE Kompany
    Dyer Sessegnon Dempsey Bale Silva
    Aguero Ba RVP

2 free transfers this week, where to use them?
Thinking of getting a liverpool defender and maybe attacker for double gw.

Just use 1 FT, so that you then have 2 for next GW.

Maybe BAE/Taiwo to Liverpool defender this week if you can afford it as your 1 FT?

Any comments for this GW, or am I all set?

    Al Habsi
    Senderos - Enrique - Santon
    Sessegnon - Silva - Dempsey - Walters
    RVP - Aguero - Ba

    Sorensen - Evans - Caulker - Valencia

Got 1FT if needs be, but ideally was going to hold for next GW and have 2FT to manouvre Rooney in.

The striker slots are the only interesting part of the game just now. Maybe the cheap differentials in midfield too but generally it's the forward line that has the most interesting options.

Even then, only if you want to be brave and veer away from the current standard 3 from 4 of Rooney, RVP, Aguero and Ba.

Hmm, would have to drop Fridel -> Mignolet and get Nani, Moses, Rooney ?

Got 2 FT's and need to use one. Team is:

    Kenny/Mignolet
    Raylor/Kompany/Kelly/Shawcross/(Jevans)
    Bale/Dempsey/Silva/(McClean, Moses)
    RVP/Aguero (c), Ba

Got 0.6m in the bank and next i'll go Shawcross>Enrique and Aguero>Rooney/Suarez.

So i guess this weeks transfer depends on whether i want Suarez or Rooney....
