Carlos Tevez helps City’s reserves to a win over Bolton. John Terry returns to the Chelsea squad ahead of schedule. Jack Rodwell and Phil Jagielka step up their recoveries ahead of Everton’s double gameweek, Victor Moses insists Roberto Martinez was right to drop him last weekend, while Paul Scholes is reported to have missed training for United this morning:

Carlos Tevez continued to build up his fitness as he turned out out for Man City’s reserves yesterday. The Argentine grabbed City’s first in a 3-1 win over Bolton before being subbed off with 20 minutes of the game remaining. Tevez managed 45 minutes for the second string last week- clearly, then, his fitness is building week by week but right now, he still appears to be some way off a return to first-team action, as Roberto Mancini affords him a platform in City’s second string before considering Tevez for league duties.

John Terry was on the bench for Chelsea last night, just two weeks after undergoing knee surgery. The Blue skipper was expected to be out for 4-6 weeks after an investigative operation but has returned quicker than anticipated. He was an unused sub in his side’s 2-0 FA Cup replay win over Birmingham last night but, according to Roberto Di Matteo, is available for action once again:

John has done very well and is determined to help the club, and we’re pleased to see him. He’s available. We have to take him with small steps because he’s done well to come back in just over two weeks. But it was good to see him.

Di Matteo sprung something of a surprise in terms of lineup, with Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Michael Essien all joining Terry on the bench. Many had expected the interim boss to install the likes of Lampard back into the first team following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas, but he instead opted for a 4-2-3-1, with Salomon Kalou wide left, Ramires wide right, and Juan Mata tucked in behind Fernando Torres. Mata missed yet another spot-kick, having fluffed his chances in the first game at Stamford Bridge, but with both Lampard and Drogba on the bench at the time, the Spaniard still looks to be at least third in line for penalties. Ashley Cole missed out in the St Andrews win, having failed to recover from an ankle problem. Ryan Bertrand took his place at left-back, though the former is expected to be available for the home clash with Stoke on Saturday.

Jack Rodwell and Phil Jagielka both managed 90 minutes for Everton’s reserves yesterday. The pair haven’t featured for the first-team since limping out of the first match of double gameweek 20 back in January but, having recovered from knee and hamstring injuries respectively, could be on the verge of a first-team return.Reports suggest the likeliest date is the FA Cup clash with Sunderland on March 17, with David Moyes perhaps reluctant to rush either back, with his side’s six-match unbeaten league run –including wins over City and Chelsea- indicative of the Toffees form right now.

Victor Moses admitted Roberto Martinez made the right decision in starting him from the bench last weekend against Swansea. The Wigan managers’ decision was publicly questioned by chairman Dave Whelan after the match, with Mohamed Diame and Hugo Rodallega also listed amongst the subs in the 2-0 home loss. Moses –who had started every one of the Latics league matches prior to last weekend- sprung to his manager’s defence, conceding that his midweek international commitments had left him fatigued:

I was feeling tired after being away with Nigeria. I’d done a lot of travelling in a short space of time- the fans probably don’t realise that travelling so far for a game in midweek really does take it out of you, out of your legs especially. A couple of the other lads were the same – only getting back on Friday evening – and when you’re going out with tired legs, that’s when you’re risking getting injuries – which the gaffer is trying to prevent.

Reports suggest both Paul Scholes and Michael Owen missed training this morning for United ahead of tomorrow’s Europa League home clash with Athletic Bilbao. Chris Smalling has returned to full training after recovering from his recent head knock sustained in England’s friendly defeat to Holland, while Antonio Valencia did some light running away from the first-team squad.

Karl Henry has been ruled out for 3-4 weeks after scans revealed he has picked up a hamstring injury. The midfielder was subbed off early in the 5-0 hammering at Fulham and, with Terry Connor also admitting Dave Edwards is “probably” out of this weekend’s crucial home clash with Blackburn, David Davis has been recalled from a loan spell with Chesterfield on Monday. Connor revealed he will have no qualms over throwing Davis straight into action against Rovers if necessary:

He’s ready and he’s training well, so if I think he’s ready to play in our first team, that’s where he has to play. He deserves to come back, and, if we’re light in midfield, we’ll consider him.

Having a look at my wildcard options for GW31. Looks pretty decent to me.

    Bale, vDV, Mata, Valencia, Sigurdsson
    Pog, Rooney, RvP

Only have Pog for a 1-week punt vs Norwich and then swap for Danny Graham for the strong Swansea run-in. Will keep Silva if vDV isn't showing any signs of form. Not chasing but i think saving my wildcard will give me a huge edge at the end of the season with everyone taking hits to get players in desperately to catch their rivals.

I'm actually keeping an eye on VDV.

I class it as an extra striker (if he's playing).

BUT whether he's playing is a massive factor.

im really really really in a dilemma whether to bench Surman or Siggy. Swansea is playing at home, City isn’t guarantee to keep a cleansheet away. +Siggy takes freekicks and corners.

Surman face Wigan, its an easy fixture indeed, but can Norwich really hammer them? +Surman haven’t done anything since the past 3-4 weeks?

Squad at the moment (*doubts and bans):

    Vorm (Sorensen*)
    Raylor Cahill Kompany Jevans (Kelly*)
    Silva Dempsey Bale (Dyer*, Sess*)
    RVP, Rooney, Ba

Can just get an XI out this week. No transfers available. Tempted to sit tight because getting rid of Sess to fund Cahill to Enrique will cost 8 points and I don't think I will break even on the hit.

The big problem comes if Chelsea vs City isn't squeezed into GW29. As things stand, I'd only have 8 players fit or eligible! It does make the changes look more attractive.

    Thoughts?

Keepers are in hell, Defence is a shambles, MF is okish and front 3 are fine. imo you should just take the hit to get rid of sess or dyer as both are out for 2/3 weeks. Will pay off over that time

it doesn't affect them, only that if you have city and chelsea players (can't tell because you've not linked your team) you may struggle to field a full team next week. You don't want rotated players in the mix.

play simpson, mata and ba. they will get enough points to make the -8 not viable.

      i.e. Simpson 2, Skrtl 8?
      mata 5, yaya 3?
      ba 6, suarez 10?

all guesswork of course, but that would be 8 extra points for an 8 point hit. IF skrtl keeps a cleanie and IF Suarez scores. If you can afford just the defensive change then just do that.

      "random big returns"

Not at all true. if you read glover's feature article, you'd have figured out that he does produce consistent returns.

If there ever was a time to gamble on him, the TIME IS NOW! 😉

Yeah maybe not so random. I think his frustrating play annoys me and i'm not 100% about selecting him. But it does look like he scores fairly consistently. I just fear a 2,3,2 in the weeks when I put him in.

The only liverpool mids who have the potential to score points are Gerrard, Adam and Kuyt. I'd say Gerrard is the most nailed on, but there's always the chance of him being rested with the FA cup tie coming up. Go for Suarez or a defender.

Nani is more consistent, more selfish (ie less assists, more chance of goals)
Young is a lottery. He can score massively... but in my experience has never delivered two weeks in a row...

      Both are great choices though.

Young hasn't got the chance to really deliver yet, too much injuries too him. But IMO if he can stay fit now, he should get a hatful of goals and assists in the next 8 fixtures.

        Less assists?

He was highest in the league for assists last season with 18.

He's currently 4th for the season with 10 behind Silva (14), Adebayor (12) and Adam (11).

He's played a lot less game time than them aswell.

At the moment he has less chance of assists because his crosses are a bit wayward and he seems more keen to shoot. As you rightly point out...overall he has the capacity to perform well assist wise, just at the moment he is not delivering on that front.

I actually didn't know you're an United fan.

Last 5 matches you say? Including the 3 games he missed out due to injury?

He's got an assist in each of the last 2 he's started. So I have no clue how you can say he's inconsistent.

He’s not working for the team - That, I agree.
But his selfishness is what makes him a great prospect in this game, ala Studge/VDV during their successful phases.

Not working for the team? Can't believe United fans still continue to peddle this nonsense with regards to Nani, he works his a*se off.

I got Nani in before the Norwich game and despite not playing the greatest for me in the past two weeks he has contributed well with an assist and bonus point in both games i've owned him, not so inconsistant as many make out.

I am currently pondering the same thing.

(It's possibly going to be as a 4 point hit for Dempsey aswell)

In answering the comment above with regards to Nani having less assists, I am now leaning back towards Nani as he's proven.

Young has been less consistent for Utd, but that is partly down to injuries breaking up his gametime. He doesn't have the previous history at the same levels as Nani, BUT he's playing in a better team now aswell.

I am waiting until after the Europa though.

    RMT Please.

    Hart
    G.Johnson / Skrtel / Baines / Evans
    Nani / Mata / Dempsey
    Rooney (vc) / Suarez (c) / Ba

    Mignolet / Surman / McClean / Santon

Do I have the right subs? Feels wierd benching Surman against Wigan.

I'm wondering if Yaya is worth bringing in? Is he not a bit of a 3 point specialist?

I think there is better value out there for his price (or slightly less) TBH.

I bought him in as i'm getting rid of Silva soon. If he continues playing like he has been i reckon the points will start to come.

Which do you think is the better transfer?

    A: Taiwo > Skrtel + Aguero > Rooney
B: As above but also Ba > Suarez.(4 point hit)

Basically, do you think Ba > Suarez is worth a 4 point hit?

Suarez would then likely be shipped out for Adebayor in due course.

      Yeah Smurf, that's my thinking.

What's pushing me in this direction is that Liverpool no longer have a blank GW and it's qpr, where he could get something from there... also, the transition from him to Adebayor is quite smooth, in GW31 or even earlier in GW29.

I think it makes owning Rooney even more vital.

Even 2 x Man U defenders + Rooney could be an option to get fewer headaches.

Young is very inconsistent FPL wise - that's all you need to know 🙂

Seriously though, IMO, he's only worth going for if you need to take a risk to catch someone up.
