Four sides from across the continent have now confirmed their place in the Quarter-Finals of the Champions League. Some had scares, some took it right until the very last kick and some just rubbed it in…

Spirited But Ultimately Hollow Victory For The Gunners

Arsenal fans would have been ecstatic on pretty much any other day, having so resolutely beaten reigning Serie A champions AC Milan 3-0 at the Emirates. The short shrift of the matter is that an equally strong -and most importantly, one goal superior- performance by the Italian side in the first leg, a stark contrast to their perfunctory showing on Tuesday night, can only leave a bitter taste in the mouth. Hot on the heels of their recent comebacks against Spurs and Liverpool, the Gunners will still surely be buoyed by this display but ultimately, their toils were unsuccessful, as the London outfit succumbed to a 4-3 aggregate defeat.

People across the “blogosphere” were noting the similarities between how the fixture was unfurling and a certain Champions League final comeback involving Liverpool -first goal a header, second from a Czech international and the third from a penalty situation- but in the end the omens proved to be nothing but unsurprising coincidences.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain impressed once again, playing while fighting a bout of the flu, by tracking back when needed but proving to be just as threatening at the sharp end of the pitch with an assist and a penalty won for his side. Tomas Rosicky continued his Lazarus-esque rise from the shadow of the man he used to be, while Robin Van Persie nonchalantly clocked up another goal as the Gunners threatened a great escape. Laurent Koscielny was the stand out Fantasy performer, returning 13 points for his owners, with a goal, a clean sheet and 9 recovered balls.

All bright points but, in the end, as far as our European Fantasy managers are concerned, it will now be a case of thank you and arrivederci. Milan have progressed and it will be their men on our radars for the Quarter-Finals later this month. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, priced at 9.5 and with a 10% ownership, and Thiago Silva, costing 6.2 and owned by 23%, are the two most popular options in Massimo Allegri’s squad to date.

APOEL Do Anything But Crumble

There is a team from Cyprus in the Champions League Quarter-Finals. There is a team from Cyprus in the Champions League Quarter-Finals.

We didn’t make a mistake by typing that twice, it just needed a little extra for it to really sink in.

Just making the knock-out stages was a mighty achievement for APOEL. To then top their group was beyond anyone’s, even their own, expectations. Now the dream continues as they have now knocked Lyon out of the Champions League after 210 minutes of action and an added round of pressure-laden penalties.

A spot in the last eight now beckons and, once again, this is exactly as FC APOEL deserved after a performance befitting of the task before them. Lyon aided the cause by most certainly failing to bring their “A” game to the party, but that is not to discount the hosts’ achievement.

One-nil down from the first leg, the Cypriots kept the clean sheet required and Gustavo Manduca hogged the headlines by not only grabbing the necessary goal to take the game into extra-time and penalties, but then picking up a second yellow card in the 115th minute, ruling himself out of the APOEL’s first leg tie.

Fantasy managers are now afforded a chance to pick up cut-price assets for the last eight. The likes of Nuno Morais (4.0) and Paulo Jorge (3.9) are budget-friendly backline options, while Constantinos Charalambides, at 4.0, is a midfield alternative for Manduca.

Benfica Back On Track

As we had alluded to in our Matchday Preview, Benfica weren’t exactly rolling on the crest of wave as they headed into the must-win match at home to Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday night.

Form be damned. A 2-0 victory courtesy of defender Maxi Pereira and an injury time goal from substitute Nelson Oliveira has seen the Portuguese outfit waltz their way right through their Russian opponents without conceding a goal -something their coach had conceded was almost inevitable- as they overcame a 3-2 first leg deficit with relative ease.

Jorge Jesus’ men may have handed the advantage in the Liga to fierce rivals Porto a little under a week ago but in Europe, they have so far refused to back down. Now the likes of Nicolas Gaitain (6.4), Oscar Cardozo (7.5) and company will have the chance to solider on further as a nice mid-range investment opportunity for our budding European Fantasy managers.

Lionel Messi: Take A Bow

Barcelona won. Lionel Messi scored five times (a first since the European Cup became the Champions League). They’re great. He’s the greatest. The Quarter-Finals, and beyond, beckon. Not much more needs to be said.

We’ll elaborate though, anyway. With Barca 10 points behind Real Madrid in the race for La Liga, Pep Guardiola’s side look highly unlikely to retain their domestic title, suggesting their attempts to become the first side to win back-to-back Champions League finals is of greater importance than ever. Messi was absent from the weekend game against Gijon through suspension so had plenty of rest to be ready to take on Leverkusen. And take them on he did.

An incredible 22 point haul –or 44, for those who handed him the armband- means Messi is the runaway leader in the competition so far, with 74 points only 6 less than his tally for last season. Dani Alves grabbed an assist and, while costly for a defender at 7.9, is second overall for Barca, with 34 points. Xavi owners were left frustrated, though; with the game won early on, he was withdrawn on 54 minutes, for a mere 4 point haul. With the playmaker priced at 8.9, there’s perhaps better value to be found in 9.4 Cesc Fabregas, with the latter -afforded a role in the Barca front three yet again last night- returning a couple of assists in the 7-1 rout.

I along with 50,000 others attended the Toronto FC v LA Galaxy match last night to watch the 1st leg of the CONCACAF CL quarter final. Final Score 2-2. Atmosphere was totally electric. One of the best sporting events i have attended in a long time!!!!

Landon Donavon scored a heartbreaking goal (Im a TFC fan) in the 89+ minute to level the score. David Beckham still provides the best service i have ever seen. His balls from set pieces were spectacular tonight. Robbie Keane showed nothing, allthough he did yell at the official on a number of occaisions.

The quality of football is no where near that of the Prem, but it defo is getting better. It is amazing on how many football fans there are in this country, especially in Toronto. I have never seen 50,000 people for an MLS game in the USA!

How will Podolski fit in next season? He's left-footed, a natural striker and has been deployed on the left wing.

    My stabs:
    If RVP stays (cough)

    ............................RVP
    ...Podolski/Gervinho..Ox/Ros...Walcott
    ...............Song...Arteta/Wilshere....

    If RVP leaves (cry)

    .........................Podolski
    ........Gervinho....Ox/Ros.....Walcott
    ...............Song...Arteta/Wilshere....

There is of course the possibility that Wenger might adapt to having another striker by going 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, with I think RVP in the hole because of his intelligent hold up play.

Poldi will come in as winger/striker/back up for Rvp.. coz No first team striker would trsnfer to Arsenal with Rvp in front of him.. Hence Poldi as he can play on the wings and up front//

So out and out striker does not seem like a possibility,,

On the wings we have Ox, Gervinho and Theo add to that Poldi and there will be fantastic 4 options on the wings with all the mix and match Wenger can do..

RVP is impossible to replace but it looks like Podolski's closest fit is "RVP replacement". So yeah he's the only serious candidate to replace RVP as striker when he's out/sold. Left wing looks like his most likely position yeah. The thing is, he's a finisher not a playmaker. I'm therefore not sold on him playing as a central attacking midfielder - so I think if we ever play two strikers he will need to be the furthest forward. RVP on the other hand can play deeper.

        Wingers look great 😉

Hahahaha! Chamakh replacement, I love that rebranding!

I agree his talent is wasted on the wing and that's why I hope Wenger plays 4-4-1-1 with RVP in the hole as Smurf and I suggest below.

Djerbil's 4-1-3-2 is really tempting too with RVP and Podolski up front.

Two up front is more attractive for me, the only thing to watch is that the defence doesn't get buggered - see Spurs

It's good to have that flexibility. That seems to me to be a big difference between "the project" and this year's acquisitions. German players seem able to handle multiple team shapes

No he wont play as CM.. Either on the left with RVp or up front when is rested..
Thats why Arsenal are after winger/strikers so that they wont have to be rested like chamakh/park when rvp is in form..
And also I highly doubt that Rvp will be sold.. If he does not sign I think Arsenal are ready to let him walk for free.. will rvp take that chance.. free but 31 yrs old.. ??

I think hopefully ARsenal are going for an all around strong team with strong back ups combined with young talented players too (Miquel, Coquelin, Ox, Ozyakup, Afobe)

Can see OX playing in through the middle tbh.

The best team for me IF RVP stays would be either:

      a 4-4-2
      Podolski.....RVP
      Ox/Gervinho.....Song.....Wilshire.....Walcott/Ox

      or

a 4-4-1-1 with RVP having the freedom to play anywhere and Podolski as a target man.

      Podolski
      RVP
      Ox/Gervinho.....Song.....Wilshire.....Walcott/Ox

However I think he may keep the current tactic and have

      RVP
      Podolski.....Arteta/Ramsey.....Walcott
      Song.....Wilshire

I prefer the 2nd suggestion the most. I think in reality he's most likely to play the 3rd.

I think Ox is brilliant on the left, but I can see him in the hole because he's played there before (against United I think, getting an assist against them in one of his first Prem matches!), has much more creativity than Ramsey, and I see Arteta continuing to play deeper as he has all season. It's a combination of his talents and the lack of suitable alternatives at CAM.

IF we sign Hazard, everything changes. I think Hazard would then be nailed on CAM and Ox on the left.

Ox was presented as "New Walcott" but he's actually more like "New Rooney". I don't think Arsene envisaged him in the middle, but he has good awareness....

Another squad with RVP in the hole again... I'm loving the idea.

I know Walcott is really frustrating but I think we have to keep him on the right wing. Used properly, his goal threat is immense. Ideally IMO we'd keep Ox and Walcott in the midfield three as much as possible.

    Hi guys,
already did Richards and Aguero for Jose Enrique and Suarez with my two FT.

    My team now:
    Bogdan (Krul)
Jose Enrique Caulker Kelly (Simpson, McAuley)
    Surman Silva Mata Dempsey (Bale)
    Ba Suarez(C) Van Persie

    1) Is it worth 8 point hit to do Bale and Ba for Rooney and Drenthe?
    2) Who should I bench from Surman, Silva, Demsey, Bale, Ba?

    Thanks.

Too late, don't understand why you would trade Richards (when he will finally play) for Enrique who hasn't even been getting forward and has been mainly sitting back. All these people getting rid of Citeh assets are gonna be sorry.

Should have been Ba to Suarez and Mata to a Liverpool or Everton (Drenthe) MF. And worried about Rooney after WBA. Bench Ba, Arsenal highline and header winning is Kryptonite for a Ba.

Lukas Podolski is rated much more highly outside Germany than in the Bundesliga itself, and quite a few observers reckon that he could struggle at Arsenal.

Podolski was fine in both his spells at 1.FC Köln because he is a classic counter-attacking player for a team that defends deep and catches opponents on the break. When you play for a top club, however, you need to develop the skills to keep possession and break through massed defences. Despite repeated warnings from Bayern Munich management, he singularly failed to do so during his disastrous period there, proving himself to have little aptitude for patient possession-based football. By contrast, a previously one-dimensional striker such as Mario Gómez worked hard on his game when he moved to Bayern to become a much more effective team player.

But instead of confronting the valid criticism, Podolski chose to return back to Cologne to be a big player in a small team. I'm not convinced from his recent behaviour on and off the pitch that he's matured enough yet to handle a similar situation to Bayern at Arsenal.

There's a lot of discussion in Germany at the moment as to what the national team has to do to beat teams such as Spain and win international trophies. Podolski isn't seen as part of the solution. His best performances for the national team come against weaker opposition such as Kazakhstan and Austria, but he fades into the background against top-ranked teams (and he's been poor for Germany full stop in the last 18 months). In short, Arsenal already know how to score 7 against Blackburn - what they need is a player who can help them to score 1 against (say) the Manchester clubs. Podolski isn't that kind of player.

The other problem is a positional one. Podolski really isn't that flexible: his best position by far is in the hole behind the striker. But this is a position which Wenger doesn't favour in his 4-3-3 formation. Podolski is not as effective on the wing and his defensive work isn't good enough for a box-to-box midfielder.

I'm not saying that Podolski won't be a good signing - he's got a great shot on him, and if he feels that everything's organised around him, then his mentality should be fine. The problem is that this makes him a better signing for Arsenal if van Persie leaves, rather than if he stays.

I wonder what Juventus had to say about Henry, and Milan about Vieira. Wenger's been great at picking out those who need a little guidance, though more recently some who require too much like Walcott. Let's hope he'll be a hit, mainly because I feel sorry for Arsene!

Cheers for the summary, I know you watch far more German football than me so you have considerably more experience of Podolski.

I've always seen him as a great finisher who ends moves rather than starts them which has some in common with your analysis of him as a flat-track bully who catches them on the counter.

Interesting though that you see him as best in the hole and not as the furthest forward - I thought his finishing skills would suit him better there especially with creation not being his forte.

The thing is Arsenal are very counter-attacking in their play, typically destroying opponents by breaking down the flanks against defences too far up the pitch and crossing for a target man - in this respect it suits him. In the same way you identify, it doesn't suit Arsenal because it doesn't bring something different that can pass through the best defences - and he is very much like a RVP replacement.

I think if we sign Hazard it will work splendidly, otherwise it may be a little one-dimensional.

Agree with you totally Isacki, and basically say as much in my reply as well. As we both said earlier it was only a matter of time AOC played centrally. This takes pressure off having to sign a Hazard and also strengthens the negotiating hand with Walcott, there's no way we pay him over 100k week, what Podolski will probably be getting as well.

He's also a player that can work in tandem with a faster LB and can put reliable crosses into the box. I agree with everything in your analysis. He has a much stronger shot and reliable foot, and he fits in more with this year's team (hybrid of their former walk it in style with a bit of Italian counter/possum game). As much speed as Arsenal's current team has they don't have the organized discipline element to actually pull off consistent counters. Having all speed typically leaves you with bad passes to pint them in the right direction. I see him as more of a Dzeko but a slight bit quicker and a bit more realistic as to his actual abilities. And as for his place on the German National team, I think his place is a bit more secure. Them not keeping more possession was more a result of their tactics and mentality. Obviously if you're goal as a team is to hoof accurate balls into the box, then you're not going to get the effects/results of say a Spanish side who value possession loads more than to actually cross a ball into 3v3 and 4v4 lines.

Team looks fairly generic at the moment:

    Krul/Mignolet
    Kompany/Evans/Kelly/Simpson/Caulker
    Silva/Bale/Dempsey/Sigurdsson/McClean
    RVP/Aguero/Ba
    1.3 in the bank

Got an 80 point lead to make up and running out of time, thinking of pulling the WC trigger to get the likes of Nani, Rooney, Suarez, Enrique, Reina. Anyone think the WC is a bad idea? With limited time gameweeks left and no DGWs on the horizon, I'm worried it'll end up useless towards the end of the season.

    WC hit or -8 hit

    Currently

    Vorm, Migs

    Evans, BAE, Cahill, Simpson, Enrique

    McClean, Pilkington, Demps, Silva, Bale

    RVP, Suarez, BA

Thinking of doing Ba > Rooney, Silva > Young, Cahill > McAuley for -8 hit!!!

Shall I leave it, do it, use WC or something else (Silva > Siggy & Ba > Rooney)

    HELP

How long did you plan to hold on to the Wc for? Wait until tonight, at least.

You're not taking points hits? All the cool kids are.

Team looks solid, wouldn't WC that. Those hits could easily work out costing you far more than -8.

Colehole - Will do anyway, seems a waste using it for 8 points thats all

Breadbin - So leave it as is or take the hit?

I don't see it paying off massively. The 8 pt hit looks mainly to be for Rooney. Silva to Young/Nani only I think. Bear in mind that Ba has a great game next week.

Apologies in advance if this has been done to death already, but I’m just jumping in quickly whilst at work.

What’s the assessment of Younes Kaboul as a FPL prospect, and does the Dawson injury make him more or less nailed on for the run in? I was looking at downgrading Krul>Bogden to free up funds for Raylor>BAE, but if Kaboul is nailed on I could do Raylor>Kaboul next GW without loosing the additional transfer (Krul>Bodgen). Is it worth doing, or is BAE/Walker the way to go?

Kaboul is the only nailed on CB for Spurs. Worth the money IMO if you need it elsewhere. With his size and stature the only disappointment is his lack of attacking prowess.

Thanks Breadbin. Am looking at him for CS prospects mainly. Spuds fixtures look strong for the remainder so I am manouvering towards having Man U, Liverpool and Spurs coverage as the backbone of my defence for the run in (or GEvans, Skrtel and Kaboul if you will).

No problem my Lord. If you have Enrique that's more money for elsewhere if you need it.

I've already done the Skrtel transfer, which leaves me with 0.3 to do Raylor>Kaboul in GW29 (provided prices don't fluctuate)

I've kept Komapy Evans Enrique, couldn't afford to keep my beloved BAE, however, when I downgrade Young to Valencia, Kaboul is nailed on in my team.

Their recent excursions to London suggest they'll get tonked and outplayed. Can see them not scoring and conceding 3 or 4.

Very FFS bandwagon ish. Not enough big hitters and too many punts.

It could work, mine's no better.

    Schwazer Mignolet

    Kompany Senderos Santon Cahill Tawio

    Silva Dempsey Bale Siggy Valencia

    RVP Ba Suarez

Already done Dzeko > Suarez this week but still have one transfer and 1.3 in the piggy.

Is Enrique rising tonight? I want to do Tawio > Enrique but 5.8 is my max buy so don't wanna miss out on that. At the same time I'd kinda like to wait until tomorrow encase any injuries occur tonight...

Would I be a raving looney?
If I were to captain Rooney?
Or maybe I should show no mercy
And instead opt for Van Persie
Or if you feel they both might fail,
What about a punt on Bale?
Or maybe I should just be crazy
An offer the armband to Luis Suarezy!
