The double Gameweek is an ever-divisive occasion in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) calendar. For some Fantasy managers, it relaunches a foundering season, for others it’s a siren song luring a hitherto buoyant squad onto jagged mini-league rocks.

On special occasions it’s traditional to find ourselves dining on fare we wouldn’t normally consider, and identifying the birthday cake from the Christmas sprouts can be a tricky business in Fantasy football. Having already focused on Liverpool, we now examine the runners and riders from the Everton squad who may tempt investment ahead of their forthcoming couplet of clashes.

THE PROSPECTS

There’s no disguising the fact that Everton have been handed the short end of the double Gameweek stick; a set-to with Spurs followed by a visit to Anfield wouldn’t augur brilliantly for any team. With a rampant Arsenal rolling up at Goodison the following Gameweek, the immediate prospects for Toffees players look somewhat sticky but, nevertheless, there are grounds for cautious optimism.

Spurs have shipped eight goals in their last two league games, and Everton have only failed to score once since the beginning of December. Liverpool have also been far from watertight at the back of late and, having scored just six goals in their last seven games -with three of those coming against a struggling Wolves- the chances of an Everton clean sheet are not remote, either.

Indeed the Toffees have been in good defensive nick lately, registering clean sheets against Chelsea and Man City in their last four games. Undefeated since January 11, confidence is high in the blue half of Merseyside, and the traditional late-season surge is in full flow for David Moyes’ men.

THE LIKELY LADS

As usual, the most enticing prospect in the Everton defence is FPL institution Leighton Baines. Already over the 100 point mark for a fourth consecutive season and firmly in the running to retain his title as the top scoring defender, a premium price tag of 7.8 has somewhat succeeded in dampening investor enthusiasm, despite his lock on Everton’s penalties and direct free kicks. Baines’ unusually low current ownership of 6.5% may serve as a further significant selling point for a player never far away from a double-digit haul.

For those inclined towards more budget friendly back line picks, the ever-glamourous Tony Hibbert offers an entry-level route into the Toffees’ defence. Priced at 4.6, Hibbert is having a bumper attacking season by his standards with two assists, though only the diehard optimist will be confidently expecting more. At 5.4, Tim Howard weighs in at the pricier end of the goalkeeping spectrum but, with two penalty saves under his belt, he is currently sitting at a more-than-respectable 100 points for the season; a consistent performer and a credible pick.

Goodison Park’s prodigal son,Steven Pienaar, has been merrily making hay since his January return to the Everton ranks, averaging 5.67 points-per-game at a price of 7.0. Perhaps the strongest candidate in the Everton midfield over the medium term, his short term appeal is hampered by his ineligibility to face Spurs as a condition of his loan deal. Though one to watch, he is unlikely to be the most tempting Toffee target this week, that distinction is likely to go to the dynamic Royston Drenthe.

Used tentatively by David Moyes for much of the season, Drenthe has been a frustrating acquisition thus far for Fantasy managers. With Moyes now apparently confident in the Dutchman’s defensive work ethic, though, it seems likely that increased pitch time will be his reward – particularly with Pienaar out of the running to face Spurs. Priced at just 5.3, and with no doubt over his capacity for explosive returns, Drenthe is certain to attract investment.

A firm favourite of David Moyes, Leon Osman is the highest scoring Everton midfielder this season – albeit with an unspectacular 66 points. Notching for Everton’s reserves on his return from injury last week, Osman is waiting in the wings as a potential spoiler for investors in Drenthe, and with Moyes ever tight-lipped over the match fitness of his players, his game time over the double Gameweek is difficult to predict. Never the most fashionable FPL pick, he has a record of delivering the goods and, currently priced at 6.6, he could represent the dark horse candidate this week.

One of the FPL’s more consistent performers over recent years, Tim Cahill is having a strangely subdued season. Usually a prime target, he has disappeared off the radar altogether for much of this campaign. Initially priced at 9.0, a season record constituting one goal and three assists does not make for impressive reading, even at his reduced price of 8.5. Nevertheless the Australian has sufficient pedigree to suggest that his slump cannot last forever, and he has the firepower to quickly make up for lost time once he finds his shooting boots.

CHEEKY PUNT

Denis Stracqualursi’s gutsy performances in recent weeks have enamoured him to the Goodison faithful. The top scorer in the Argentinian league last season, he has determinedly clawed his way up the Everton pecking order – starting in each of the last four games. A goal and three bonus points two weeks ago against Chelsea prove that he can cut it against the big boys and, priced at just 5.1, he presents an interesting left-field option for those Fantasy managers with a taste for blazing their own trails.

Hmmm.....was all set to (C) Rooney...but now worried about
    a) WBA's form
    b) Rooney getting a little rest in time for Thurs

Obvious alternative is RvP but thinking =
    a) Newc full strength and will put up fight at the Emirates!
    b) Will his miss vs. Milan be on his mind + will he be a bit tired

    what's everyone else thinking?

(REPOST: I got 3 different answers to my question :P)

    Would you rather have:

    a) Rooney (vc) + RVP (c)

    b) Suarez (c) + RVP (vc)

I currently don’t have either Rooney or Suarez.

I'll have to make my transfers right now before I spend the night out with my folks. Fml.

ok I know my main rival has taken a 4 point hit and sold Lind and Walters, he appears to have dropped 0.7 off his team value which leads me to believe, based on this week's fixtures he has dropped Walters to someone like Jarvis and maybe Lind to Hennessey. Banking on Wolves, big risk.

    RMWCDGWT:

    Ruddy (Krul)
    Skrtel JEnrique Senderos
    Giggs Dempsey Bale Silva
    Pogrebnyak Ba RVP(c)

    Bench: Sigurdsson JEvans Caulker
    £1.2m in the bank

    My thinking:
    1. My first FPL season, and I’m rapidly learning two things: a) Form over fixtures (hence I’m getting Pog until he runs out of form), and b) the value of player values. Money is tight for me, and I wasn’t on the ball (or on this site) early enough to get a decent pot to upgrade players. Teams with two of the likes of Roony Aguero and RVP up front make me green with envy.
    2. One of those defenders was going to be Kompany until last night (guess who!), and Senderos was going to be Kelly (Fulham) to release 0.3m. So much for that. One of the double Liverpool will turn into Man City after the DGW – still undecided whether to replace Skrtel and use the spare cash elsewhere, or use it now to replace Enrique.
    3. I’m sticking with Fuham until their fixtures turn nasty (about GW33). Dempsey will end up being one of Nani/Young/Valencia,depending on their fitness, rotation and form at the time. The Pog may revert to the Yak sooner.

    tl;dr
I have no money; form over fixtures this season; defenders injured (boo); Fulham are on a roll till GW33.

    What think ye all?

Not sure about Giggs, and what about a punt on Suarez over Ba this week?
The DGW makes his prospects look brighter 😉

And I'd consider Mignolet over Ruddy, not much more expensive, but good rotation with Krul.

Not sure what e,we there is in Giggs' price bracket - down to Pilkington/Miyachi to free up funds?

Also I'd favour a spurs defender over a city defender til the end of the season, after the Chelsea game Spurs have some very nice fixtures

      a) Yes: Kompany - Skrtel for a short term DGW punt, BAE for longer. Or just gamble on Richards/Lescott for diminishing returns.
      b) Kelly - Senderos is 4.3 and if Hughes and Kelly are both out he'll surely play.
      c) It's a gamble, but perhaps you'll get away with it. Pray for Mancini deciding to shut up shop as squeaky bum time approaches.

What about Young? He's on great form. Would need to get rid of one of Silva or Bale to do so. Is it worth it?

Was thinking of Bale as he's in a bit of a dry patch at the moment, and an away game to Everton this week.... bad idea?

    Elnino’s Stupid CL Reviews – Non-specific

    Group A

    Man City vs. Villarreal
    Napoli vs. Bayern Munich

Man City (ergh) – Roberto Newman-cini

After a highly successful GW27, Newman will be feeling mighty pleased with himself after having lucked out on Dempsey(vc). Every Aguero(c) owner was cursing their rotten luck when Aguero didn’t start against the best team north of Salford and south of Darwen, Bolton. However Roberto Oldman-cini had other plans and decided not to repeat his previous annoyances by bringing on Aguero for a 1 point cameo. What a douche. Thanks for that Mancini. So Newman-cini ended up on a highly impressive 72 points with a 30 point Dempsey(vc). What unbelievable skill... On the otherhand he did have Vorm and Caulker grabbing him 18 points so I suppose he deserves some credit...although every Swansea defensive owners should have got rid ages ago considering their defensive record actually hasn’t been brilliant for a while. Sat on 3 points in second place, Newman has managed to land on 0 goal/point difference. Strange. Having utilised his 2 FT’s it’s actually really difficult to predict what he’s done.

With Lindegaard, Dyer, Valencia, Kompany, Kelly all certain to not play, his team is quite frankly a car-crash. He has 3.0 in the bank. He could have made all manner of transfers. If it were me I would have probably taken a hit, each to their own I guess. With 5 out of his 15 not playing, he’s surely in trouble and with that much money, I don’t think he’s brought in Rooney either. Madness. Suarez(c) looking fairly certain Villarreal so be aware of that. To be honest without looking at your team TW you should win this.

    Villarreal – TW

Some people really aren’t as fortunate as others when it comes to FPL sometimes and TW is the prime example here. Like Newman, he also had Aguero(c) for GW27 but put Silva as VICE. OH SH!T!! That’s unbelievably unlucky. I suppose you shouldn’t use both your vice in the same team as your captain. Lesson learnt 😕 I feel for you bro, that sucks massively. I mean that sucks more than Paris Hilton. (Is that cool? Meh who cares, someone will probably brag that they’ve achieved this). Although he achieved 48 points it could be worse. With recent news that Richards is going to start on Sunday and Bale just off with illness his team seems to look okay. I know I spoke to him earlier today or yesterday about what his transfers were and I can’t remember but they sounded good. With that in mind and Newman only making a couple of transfers above I’d say that TW has the edge. He already has one DGW player and I think he’s bringing in Rooney and maybe Evans. Should be fine TW, don’t worry about that LUCKY Newman above, rank or a 4 point bonus won’t matter for him. You’ve got this. In last place by a fair distance, you’re gonna need the points.

    Napoli – Tommytour59

92?!? What the hell Tommy? Ahhh what a surprise. Dempsey(vc), Aguero(c). You lucky son of a b!tch Tommy. Not like he needed those points there though, what a cracking defensive score! Only Simpson and Krul letting you down a bit there. No one should ever get 27 points from 2 Swansea players, don’t ever expect that to happen again. Anyway. Sat in first place with a great goal difference of +45 keeping him at the top, Tommy has been filling the boards with nearly as many RMT’s and A, B bloody C questions as Jinswick. Can’t stand it when that guy has a wildcard, hopefully he’ll stay quiet for a bit now. So with all this advice Tommy has currently made just 2 transfers, both of them freebies. Looking at his team it has to have been:

    Aguero>Rooney
    Kompany>Enrique??

Not sure whether he had the cash for that but if he did then he will be sitting pretty with the extra 4 points to boot in Michael in the Ballacks. Having looked into slightly more detail at his first fixture against Man City which he only lost because of the 4 point addition I guess he deserved the good week last week. Ranked pretty highly as well ain’t we? The highest you’ve been all season as well? Without taking a hit I think you can be pretty sure of staying that high. Wish I could help you out a bit more by telling you about Ballacks’ team but he doesn’t ever say anything 😕 Tommy appears to have the edge here.

I think I'm just going to keep commenting on all of these. You realize VC is an active choice, and not just completely random, right? You realize those who chose Dempsey chose him for this very reason, right: because we thought he would do well.

Bayern Munich – Back to Back Ballacks

What the hell am I supposed to call you? Ballacks? Coliano? Michael? We’ll go for Michael.

MICHAEL has been having a very consistent season and rarely seems to ask for help on the boards. At least, I rarely see him ask for any help and as you all know I spend far too much bloody time on there as it is. Well Michael had a very successful 71 last week and with the help of the 4 point advantage beat Newman. Oh...I didn’t properly look at that before slating Newman above....my bad Newman my bad, too late to change it now, you’re still a lucky bar steward! (that was for you Doos).

Michael’s team is actually really refreshing to look at, for a start he had Rooney(vc) after Aguero(c) and NO RVP. ARE YOU FREAKIN’ INSANE?!? Chamberlain as your only Arsenal coverage as well? Mental, absolutely mental. Also a sufferer of no Taiwo, Bale, Richards, Silva, Aguero, Sorenson, you actually managed to pull it out of the bag last week. Well done you. Again you managed to grab 27 points from 2 Swansea players. Like I said to Tommy, don’t expect that to happen again. Having made no transfers and having carried 2 for the past 4 weeks or so, Tommy appears to possess a remarkable restraint that I personally should take heed of. So I guess he deserves a bit of respect....from someone....anyway.

Will he get RVP back? Won’t he? Seems an absolute no brainer for Tommy to captain RVP and sail through to 3 points to me.

Winners of GW28 in Group A:

    TW and Tommytour59.
