As United begin to hit top form in their tussle for the title with neighbours City, Javier Hernandez is starting to look like a key component of Sir Alex Ferguson’s front line. With the goals flying in for the champions, the Mexican seems to have jumped ahead of Danny Welbeck as Wayne Rooney’s strike partner and, with an outstanding schedule ahead, “Little Pea” is wasting little time in getting back amongst the Fantasy points.

With Welbeck reduced to a role on the wing in the last couple of games, Hernandez’s partnership with Rooney has seen the pair produce 18 points apiece. Both players returned a total of two goals, an assist and three bonus points over the matches against West Brom and Wolves, indicating the Mexican –despite a lack of spot-kick duties- may be able to match Rooney over the rest of the campaign.

Certainly, the signs are good. Hernandez has played 90 minutes in each of the last two – the first time this season he has been afforded back-to-back full appearances by Ferguson. The United manager admitted after the 5-0 Molineux rout that City’s superior goal difference is playing a part in his thinking, despite the fact his side are ahead of their rivals on points:

It’s straightforward. There are nine games left now. What’s significant is that it’s reduced the goal difference by five goals. It’s down to three now and that might make a difference at the end of the season.

A glance at the conversion rate of United’s three main strikers suggests it’s a no-contest between Hernandez and Welbeck when it comes to producing the goods. Despite playing over 300 minutes less, Hernandez has scored 10 goals to Welbeck’s seven, at a rate of one goal per 124 minutes – almost half the latter’s conversion rate and more in line with Rooney’s 104 minutes per goal.

PlayerGoalsMinsMins/GoalStartsBonus
Wayne Rooney2020891042325
Javier Hernandez1012401241518
Danny Welbeck715842261911

Further examination of their respective stats shows Hernandez seems to be something of a bonus points magnet, too, picking up 18 from just 15 starts. Again, this is far superior to Welbeck’s 11 from 19 starts and more on a par with the output of Rooney. Indeed, Hernandez has returned maximum bonus points on five occasions; more than Rooney’s four, despite starting eight games fewer.

With many Fantasy managers looking for a way to fit three United players into their squads for the run-in, Hernandez certainly looks an intriguing option, then. Jonny Evans’ cut-price appeal at the back looks set to see him nailed-on by many, while Rooney’s guaranteed starts and returns are almost too good to ignore.

The final, third spot will be ever-crucial. Undoubtedly, if Antonio Valencia can cement his role on the right flank, at 7.7 he also offers superb value, though the United midfield is something of a conundrum. Ashley Young, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Ji-Sung Park and even Welbeck are all potential options on the flanks, leaving their Fantasy owners sweating on the team sheet every weekend.

The stats shows Hernandez is more than capable of returning regular points and with Ferguson’s faith seemingly growing once again, a continued role in the United first-team will substantially boost the Mexican’s potential. With a mere 3.2% Fantasy ownership, the 9.9 priced forward could be a strong differential for the run-in, and, with (FUL, bla, QPR, wig, AVL) up next, his eye for goal may well prove as pivotal as Rooney’s as United go on the offensive in their bid to see off City.

Would like a fresh pair of eyes to suggest 1 or 2 transfers. I have £2m and 2 FTs so obviously have to use at least one:
Please think longterm and not just for this weekend!
    Mignolet (Vorm)
    Enrique, Evans, Caulker, (Santon, McCauley)
    Valencia, Silva, Bale, Surman, (Dempsey)

Yeah i know but still i believe the only tempting thing about Rooney is his penalty duties other than that he plays up front against tougher opposition but against weaker oppositions he likes to sit in mid field and pass to forward runs of other players ... and i cant see any difficult opposition for united in next weeks...

Fair enough you want a differential. What do you think about Rooney scoring both goals against West Brom then? He's also scored against:

Bolton, West Brom (away), QPR, Wolves(Home), Fulham(away).

I understand you're trying to argue that your friend won't get points from him, but I'm afraid he will.

I see where you're coming from and there are 2 sides to Rooney.

There's the striker side to him that plays up front with another striker/on his own and hammers them in for fun and there's the dropping deep to get involved in the build up play. Whether that's something he chooses to do or it's something Fergie asks him to do I don't know but when he's in the mood for goals he's a must-have.

Yeah, there are a lot more midfielders I want than strikers, so for Young's price I'd rather use the money to get Rooney (or Hernandez) along with Evans, and then just the one midfielder.

There won't be many games where they both play, so whilst it's covering rotation risks, you're better off risking the one midfielder than two.

The N/A was probably an away game so I doubt it. I think it was just the home game last week where he failed, and Utd away this weekend has swayed it. I have both, so will switch Dempsey for Bale at some point.

dempsey plays best at home - norwich have proved they are no push overs, chelsea is obviously tricky and wigan will be fighting for survival on last day and in the last couple of games at end of season relegation battlers often get results at mid-placed teams with nothing to play for....

Benched are Krul / Pogrebnyak / Dempsey / Kompany

I have £1.2m in the bank

Thought I might go for home advantage this week with all 11 in the main team playing at home unless anyone thinks the Pog or Dempsey might do something?

Why aren't you starting Kompany over McAuley? I thought he was back. Even if he's not, he won't come off the bench and so seems the better choice.

Play Vorm over Krul. If you're not playing Vorm over Krul this week, you may as well get rid of him.

Don't think Balo is the way to go. The third striker is a bit of a problem at the moment, I have Suarez so I also have problems with it.

no, hes their main creative source and particularly earlier in season was dictating games. hasnt been at top form recently it has to be said but city as a whole haven't, away from home particularly

I believe that Silva's poor form is main reason for their poor results lately and lost of first place in PL. He and incapability to score of the whole team.

Mancini knows that this is his last chance to change something in order to return to the old tracks. Keeping Silva will not be a change. So, i think that Silva will be rested sooner or later, to recover properly from his injury. And I think that Tevez will get more space to play.

worth seeing how tevez return affects city players. i'd guess the fact he likes to come short for the ball means either silva will get pushed back and end up dictating play from deep, at best 'assisting the assist' a la modric, or there'll be opportunities for late runs into the box like nasri did.

my guess is the former is more likely, and silva's returns will suffer.

    Krul, Mignolet

    Skrtel, Enrique, Evans, Simpson, Kelly

    Silva, Bale, Valencia, Sessegnon, Sigurdsson

I'm going against the consensus on here and saying Rooney. Fulham are poor defensively (e.g. let 3 in against Swansea at home) whereas McLeish always sets Villa up tight defensively. Also, United are scoring a lot of goals lately and Rooney was unfortunate not to get more than one assist vs Wolves. And, no, Rooney was not playing particularly deep.

    Note to self:
Don't get Sigurdsson in until GW33. Swansea fixtures up until then are tricky enough - Everton (h), Spurs (a), Newcastle (h). Swansea and Sig are quite defensive at home. After that they've QPR(a), Blackburn(h), Bolton(a), Wolves(h).

matches at the end of the season against relegation battlers are not easy, swansea won't have anything to play for either - just something to consider (I'll be getting siggy in soon btw!)

Sir Alex spoke about Patrick Vieira's 'United are desperate' comments in his press conference: "If it’s desperation bringing the best midfielder in Britain back for the last 20 years [Paul Scholes] then I think we can accept that. I think he was programmed for that. Roberto [Mancini] had a wee dig a couple of weeks back. We’re all going to play our hand that way. There will be plenty of ammunition for that.

"I think the point Vieira makes about Ravel Morrison and losing our young players – we wanted to sell him let’s be clear about that for obvious reasons. But we want Pogba to stay because we think he’s going to be a fantastic Manchester United player and hopefully that’s the case.

"If you talk about desperation… City played a player the other night who refused to go on the pitch and the manager said he’d never play again and he takes a five-month holiday in Argentina…what is that? Could that come under the description of desperation? There will be plenty of ammunition don’t worry."

I love this - especially the Tevez part - can you ever imagine SAF going back on his word and letting Tevez come back into the team? City are a joke.

Seeing that Ferguson let Cantona back after his kung-fu attack and left Ferdinand back after his "missed" drugs test and 8 month ban and he let Rooney hold the club to ransom, then I'm sure he would have let Tevez back as well.

Not a chance. Fergie stood by his players from the start in each of these cases. If he had said X will never play for us again, then they wouldn't have. Look at someone like Jaap Stamm.

Jaap was one of Fergie's biggest mistake, admittedly he hasn't made many, and Fergie has even admitted this himself. I think Mancini had to just forget the while Tevez drama and I don't hold it against him that he said he would never play again because Tevez could be a big part of City's title bid.

SAF saw aspects of Tevez which concerned him I;m certain, thats why he got rid. Wouldn't say city are a joke, Mancini dealt with Tevez well, left him out in the cold, now has a fresh quality player for the run in.

Not just because of this, just generally. For example, having someone like Patrick Viera act as some sort of ambassador for them when he only went there for the money and played a few Carling Cup games. Whereas United have a legend like Bryan Robson in this role.
