As United begin to hit top form in their tussle for the title with neighbours City, Javier Hernandez is starting to look like a key component of Sir Alex Ferguson’s front line. With the goals flying in for the champions, the Mexican seems to have jumped ahead of Danny Welbeck as Wayne Rooney’s strike partner and, with an outstanding schedule ahead, “Little Pea” is wasting little time in getting back amongst the Fantasy points.

With Welbeck reduced to a role on the wing in the last couple of games, Hernandez’s partnership with Rooney has seen the pair produce 18 points apiece. Both players returned a total of two goals, an assist and three bonus points over the matches against West Brom and Wolves, indicating the Mexican –despite a lack of spot-kick duties- may be able to match Rooney over the rest of the campaign.

Certainly, the signs are good. Hernandez has played 90 minutes in each of the last two – the first time this season he has been afforded back-to-back full appearances by Ferguson. The United manager admitted after the 5-0 Molineux rout that City’s superior goal difference is playing a part in his thinking, despite the fact his side are ahead of their rivals on points:

It’s straightforward. There are nine games left now. What’s significant is that it’s reduced the goal difference by five goals. It’s down to three now and that might make a difference at the end of the season.

A glance at the conversion rate of United’s three main strikers suggests it’s a no-contest between Hernandez and Welbeck when it comes to producing the goods. Despite playing over 300 minutes less, Hernandez has scored 10 goals to Welbeck’s seven, at a rate of one goal per 124 minutes – almost half the latter’s conversion rate and more in line with Rooney’s 104 minutes per goal.

PlayerGoalsMinsMins/GoalStartsBonus
Wayne Rooney2020891042325
Javier Hernandez1012401241518
Danny Welbeck715842261911

Further examination of their respective stats shows Hernandez seems to be something of a bonus points magnet, too, picking up 18 from just 15 starts. Again, this is far superior to Welbeck’s 11 from 19 starts and more on a par with the output of Rooney. Indeed, Hernandez has returned maximum bonus points on five occasions; more than Rooney’s four, despite starting eight games fewer.

With many Fantasy managers looking for a way to fit three United players into their squads for the run-in, Hernandez certainly looks an intriguing option, then. Jonny Evans’ cut-price appeal at the back looks set to see him nailed-on by many, while Rooney’s guaranteed starts and returns are almost too good to ignore.

The final, third spot will be ever-crucial. Undoubtedly, if Antonio Valencia can cement his role on the right flank, at 7.7 he also offers superb value, though the United midfield is something of a conundrum. Ashley Young, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Ji-Sung Park and even Welbeck are all potential options on the flanks, leaving their Fantasy owners sweating on the team sheet every weekend.

The stats shows Hernandez is more than capable of returning regular points and with Ferguson’s faith seemingly growing once again, a continued role in the United first-team will substantially boost the Mexican’s potential. With a mere 3.2% Fantasy ownership, the 9.9 priced forward could be a strong differential for the run-in, and, with (FUL, bla, QPR, wig, AVL) up next, his eye for goal may well prove as pivotal as Rooney’s as United go on the offensive in their bid to see off City.

Im going Valencia captain this week.

Tempted by Rooney and RVP, but if theres goals to be had against fulham (which i do believe there will be) Valencia has more chance of being involved in more of them than Rooney of late.

Anyone else going for Tony or reasons against the move?

i think yes, but tevez wont be fully fit for some weeks yet so can see him being more of an impact sub.

usually when tevez is in the side aguero is more forward, and silva more back.

my gut feeling is that tevez will do more of the work to get the ball into the box, and obv draw defenders in the process, so this could mean aguero will have more space to play in, and less donkeywork to distract....so...more points...i think?

Really? I think McClean will do well vs qpr. Still putting in good crosses and getting in box a bit. Not sure about Ba alright though. This is his last chance for me. Swans have better chance of cs's than Sunderland? Bardsley rotates nicely with rest of defence too...

Yeah it depends on who you have. You've got Vorm + defenders that rotate with Bardsley..At the moment I have no Swansea defenders, and Kelly (if Fulham can actually get some form back) who rotates well with Caulker, as well as planning on having Mignolet soon

Suarez just isn't a very good FPL player imo and if Adebayor starts I can see him getting at the Chelsea defence.

Plus I reckon he'll either play or not play and my subs are good enough to cope with that atm.... 😛

its never too late imo. so you think Siggy wont score big ANYMORE? maybe he wont score a brace every GW, but yes you HAVE to be there when he does. worth playing every game imo, if Swansea can keep possession, he'll be more likely to score..

Cahill might slip up against decent opposition. WBA are on a decent run. Newcastle looking short at the back without Raylor.

      2. Enrique will be too busy tracking the wing backs
      4. Great scoring streak. Chelsea have tightened up and no Adebayor means less chance of conceding
      5. Everton are poor attacking and Swansea have to be played at home, though they will definitely concede now im finally playing Caulker!!

      First sub Enrique

Valencia is a horse and in good form. Man Utd's run for the title should spur him on. Fulham, Blackburn, QPR, Wigan, Aston Villa, Everton in the next 6 game weeks - before City - might provide him with a nice run.

Sess is the fall guy, although Silva is increasingly becoming less involved in point scoring.

        Vorm
        Evans Caulker Skrtel
        Sess Siggy Mata Silva
        Welbeck RVP Aguero

        Bench: McClean, Walker, Kelly

Looking to strengthen. But I'm really not sure who to pick. Verm will bring goals and good performances, and Valencia is getting praise from Fergy and likely to start more often than Nani or Young.

Into the last 16 of the members cup so want to try get this week right as looks like it is going to be close!

    Currently looking at:

    Vorm (Kenny)
    Simpson, Evans, Skrtel (Taiwo, Senderos)
    Valencia, McClean, Bale, Silva, Siggy
    RVP (c), Roo (vc), Ba

Had two freebies used one to do Dempsey>Valencia

    For the other looking at
    1) Taiwo>Caulker
    2) Silva>Walcott
    3) Save it

Or a 4 pointer and do both? Opponent, Sleep Talk, has Caulker already and if they don't bring in Walcott would make a nice differential along with hopefully Valencia. Taiwo out was the plan but tempted to do something a bit more attacking with the Silva transfer!

Sounds good....but never bank on clean sheets for this Arse DEF. Go ahead with it, but only because Verm is way above average at the attacking end for a defender. Otherwise it would be better to go with Komp, Skrtl, or BAE as they are cheaper and better chance of a CS.

Same here. WIG at home is excellent for Suarez, but how many more times (great Led Zeppelin song) are we going to hope for good returns from bucktooth only to be let down every time. The Yak is on Pens too. As a UTD fan I would not advise on Chich....too many other options there and many people think he should just be used as a super sub off the Utd bench. Good luck to you BotH.

Just because when Arsenal scores RVP is involved so much. The goal expectancy from the two games is pretty much the same so RVP is more likely to pick up attacking points.

They're both great choices and it could go either way.

This might sound silly. You're going to get a bunch of in-depth reasons but the main reason RVP is in the lead is probably this:

      RVP = 219pts
      Rooney = 170pts
