The Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) kick-off this evening and, unlike the elongated previous round of sixteen, this one wraps up quickly. With two full Matchdays of action taking place in back-to-back weeks, we’ll know the identity of our Semi-Finalists in just eight days time. Here’s our scoop for the upcoming fixtures…

FC APOEL vs Real Madrid

The “FC APOEL story” has been a real beacon of light this season. To find themselves in the final eight of the Champions League is an extraordinary feat but the Cypriot outfit look likely to have met their match in Madrid.

APOEL have provided more than a few budget options over the last eight weeks and a prudent UCL manager will make sure they have snapped up at least a couple for their squads. At bargain prices, Dionysis Chiotis (goalkeeper) and Constantinos Charalambides (midfielder) offer the potential of points over the next two Matchdays but also the option to “abandon” the position if and when the time comes.

Despite a couple of recent hiccups, Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid are still on course to win the La Liga title. This past weekend Cristiano Ronaldo became the quickest player to score 100 Spanish League goals and constantly remains in our thoughts. Alvaro Arbeloa has also proved to be a relatively cheap option in a defence that will be expected to return at least one clean sheet over the next two Matchdays.

Ones to Watch
Dionysis Chiotis & Constantinos Charalambides (FC APOEL)
Cristiano Ronaldo & Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid)

Benfica vs Chelsea

The only Champions League tie to feature a side from English soil sees Chelsea travel to Portugal to face off against Benfica. The visitors are arguably still flowing on the crest of the wave, following their stunning comeback victory over Napoli in the previous round, while the home side have lost only one fixture at the Stadium of Light in all competitions this season.

With Benfica conceding just two goals in their four home games in the competition to date, Chelsea may well struggle to grab a goal in the first leg encounter. Roberto Di Matteo’s side will be looking to breach the home defence to set themselves up nicely for next week’s return.

Quite fond of a ‘returning favourite’ as I am, we can’t help but keep an avid eye on David Luiz and Ramires as they try to get one up on their former employers. While some will argue about the state of the former, Luiz is joint-top scoring defender alongside Sergio Ramos, with 46 points on the board already.

The Portuguese side have an obvious candidate in the shape of the well-touted Nicolas Gaitan in midfield; with five assists already, he sits on 39 points, just a single point behind Franck Ribery at the top of the midfielder rankings. This relative security allows us to flex the chancer’s arm by giving the bargain forward Rodrigo a whirl over these two rounds. He’s played in the Premier League before with Bolton, will it serve him any kind of advantage against Chelsea?

Ones to watch
Nicolas Gaitan & Rodrigo (Benfica)
David Luiz & Ramires (Chelsea)

AC Milan vs Barcelona

The most interesting and highest profile of the Quarter-Finals will see AC Milan and Barcelona lock swords for the third (and fourth) time this season. Having already troubled each other in the group stages, these two sides will be well aware of their opponents’ capabilities.

If those previous two fixtures (5-4 on aggregate in favour of Barcelona) are any kind of indicator for the forthcoming double-header, we can expect to see goalkeepers being kept plenty busy this Wednesday and next Tuesday.

Milan’s Thiago Silva (firmly believed to be Barcelona’s number one summer transfer target) picked up an injury at the weekend; the news that he’s set to miss out on both fixtures is a bitter blow for Massimo Allegri’s side and only adds fire to the goalscoring flames.

No surprise to see all our tips are attacking options, then. Lionel Messi gets his obligatory selection and this time we enroll Cesc Fabregas to join his brother in arms. The ex-Arsenal midfielder currently leads the way for Barca midfielders in terms of points accumulated so far and therefore gets the nod ahead of Andres Iniesta and Xavi, with a likely role in the front three affording Cesc more chance of attacking returns.

Barca old boy Zlatan Ibrahimovic – coming off a brace in Milan’s weekend win over Roma – is a shoo-in to be considered if you happen to have a spare striking spot going. Kevin-Prince Boateng, just coming back from injury, meanwhile, may be the outside of the box option needed to push some European managers up the Fantasy rankings.

Ones to watch
Kevin-Prince Boateng & Zlatan Ibrahimovic (AC Milan)
Cesc Fabregas & Lionel Messi (Barcelona)

Marseille vs Bayern Munich

The French outfit arrive in a dire run of run, having drawn one game – a 1-1 result in last Saturday’s trip to Nice – and lost seven of their last eight fixtures. Bayern, on the other hand, have bucked what was previously stuttering form by recently scoring 20 goals in just three fixtures across a six-day spell (Liverpool, take note).

Didier Deschamps’ side are frankly awful right now. Reports in France range from disparaging to disgust and, yet, they have rightfully earned a place in the Quarter-Finals, after seeing off Inter Milan. Picking your options here is something of a struggle, so Nicolas N’Koulou gets another crack of the whip for consistency and value, with Mathieu Valbuena’s name drawn out of the hat to join him.

Munich, on the other hand, have a litany of options that we struggle to narrow down to eleven. We’d frankly be quite fond of placing pretty much any of their side in our European Fantasy outfits. Clean sheets could be on the cards in both fixtures for the Bundesliga outfit, meaning Manuel Neuer and co are well worth a look in.

With Marseille’s first-choice keeper Steve Mandanda suspended for the first leg, any of the attacking quadrant of Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben could rack up substantial scores over the next two rounds. We’ll keep our eyes on the two wide men, while fully expecting all of them cash in at the bank of Deschamps.

Ones to watch
Nicolas N’Koulou & Mathieu Valbuena (Marseille)
Arjen Robben & Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich)

Nice balance there, though I don’t much like N’Koulou with the current form of Marseilles. I’d risk another Benfica defender instead (who can always be transferred out) or else if you've got the money I think Arbeloa is a bargain option.

Very similar to mine, I own Casillas, Badstuber, Maxi, Robben, Gaitan, Charalam and the strikers

Looks good though will Ramires play. I own Mexes over N'Koulou, Ramos over Alves and Nuno Morias over Paulo Jorge, my other mids are Nocerino and Valbuena, and Chiotis is my other keeper.

Defence looks ok. I'd lose Ramires and Witsel to Boateng and one of the Marseille boys.

4 greens in a row…this could be a big week. Any thoughts?

    Krul (Vorm)

Evans – Skrtel – Senderos (Enrique, Santon)

Dempsey – Bale – Sig – Mata (McClean)

    RVP – Rooney – Zamora

My main concern is the defence (Zamora rotates with Sig & McClean so I’m fine with him right now). Senderos looks unlikely to play, as does Santon…the two Liverpool hasn’t worked so far, but they’ve got Villa at home next week. So I see my options as (with no money spare) -

a.) Skrtel or Enrique out for BAE/Kaboul/Cahill/Jagielka
b.) Senderos or Santon out for a cheapie, but Caulker/Wilkinson/McCauley are all away from home this week. Or even Senderos > Kelly?
c.) Mata out for Valencia or Yaya; this leaves money for next week to upgrade Skrtel to Verm or Baines

The team looks much better for next week than this one with a lot of bigger players at home, but I still think it’s probably worth changing something.

All about using one or two of the freebies to load up on APOEL players so as Andy says you can abandon certain positions (like you don't need two keepers for the final), and there are none more cheaper than APOEL players which will allow you afford all the big guns in the semi's and final.

There are some good bargains around and there's the advantage of being able to do transfers after seeing starting lineups.

Keep an eye out for Tello (4.5), Thiago (7.5), and Montoya (4.5) for Barcelona. At least one of those three should be in the starting lineup and will be worth the trouble.
Nocerino (5.1) for Milan is a bargain too.
Sturridge (5.2) is underpriced for Chelsea.

Any other super bargains likely to play this round?

Because I'm a fantasy football addict, I entered the fantasy mls game this season (I'm Irish). Scoring system is really good. The major difference is the bonus system which is really dynamic.

I haven't a clue about mls, never have I seen a game, nor do I plan to watch one. Interested to see how I get on solely utilising 'game theory' knowledge of playing fantasy football games.

quite well i'd say. i did the ESPN version last year and, like you, am irish and had no idea who hardly any of my squad were. was doin well (54th for second portion, season being divided in three) until something else popped up- FPL i imagine- and hastily abandoned it. after a few weeks when players and teams mark themselves out as being good or bad shouts you should do as well as most by applying what you've learned from FPL. use the american equivalent of this site for tips - especially at the outset when you don't know dwayne de rosario from dom deloise

CL Group A: Matchday 6 Preview

After 5 long weeks of crests & troughs, we are into the final Matchday of the group stages. It's crunch time and below are the qualification criteria for Group A. This group has lived up to the expectations to the label of the "group of death", with 3 teams (all the managers seeded in the top 8 ) tied on 9 points. Ultimately Villareal had too much quality to contend with and ran out of imagination and luck to beat the group favorites.

For the record, here's how the group will be decided:
    1) Higher the points, higher the position.
    2) If 2 teams are tied on the same points, then it goes down to h2h record (win/loss)
    3) If the h2h record is the same, then it goes to Overall GD. If its still tied, then we go to away points scored in the matches between the tied teams.
    4) When 3 or more teams are tied on the same points, the Overall GD is taken into consideration.
    5) The group winner & runners-up qualify for the knock-outs and the 3rd spot qualifies for Round 2 of the Europa League.

Napoli - Clearly the group favorite to qualify for the knock-outs, a victory for Napoli against Villareal will make them the group winner due to a superior Overall GD. A loss would mean a runners-up position for them providing there is a result in the other group match. They will only be eliminated from the CL if they lose to Villareal and Man City/Bayern results in a tie, in which case they secure the Europa spot.

Bayern - A do-or-die match on the road awaits Bayern. An away victory for Bayern against Man City will see them qualify to the knock-outs. A loss against Man City and Napoli defeating Villareal will see them take 3rd place. For him to qualify even after a loss to Man City, they will need Villareal to beat Napoli by a ridiculously huge margin of 68+ points (uber-miracle!). The worst case scenario still leaves them a Europa spot. A tie in the final match would also ensure Bayern qualification to the knock-outs, irrespective of the Napoli-Villareal result.

Man City - A HUGE home match awaits Roberto Newman-cini against the mighty Germans. A home victory will see them through to the knockouts, whereas a loss will mean they would have to hope for Napoli to lose to Villareal by a miraculous margin of 73+ points (double-uber-miracle!). Again the worst case scenario sees them through to the Europa League. If the Man City - Bayern game results in a tie, they will have to hope for a Napoli loss, in which case they qualify as runners-up in the group.

Villareal - Admittedly drawn in a very competitive group, TW, the Villareal manager faced the heat throughout the group phase. However, it has to be said that this manager was a highly enthusiastic and self-motivated manager, as shown by his weekly press conferences. Unfortunately, he didn't have the backing of his players. Aspiring to be the next manager of Barcelona, and with Zep Guardiola's imminent exit from Barca on the cards, could he be the next big thing at Camp Nou? Only time will tell.

    Predictions:
Villareal vs Napoli - Potentially could come down to Silva vs Suarez. Close call but I'm banking on Napoli's complacency, the home crowd's backing & TW's enthusiasm to give Villareal a marginal consolation win.

Man City vs Bayern - Bayern has a intriguing set of differentials including VDV, Yak, Ox and Richards for this week. Going down to the wire. Although Man City's 4 point home advantage should help, I predict a dramatic TIE in this game.

Having Overall GD ahead was a conscious decision since it was more comprehensive (over 6 Matchdays) and easier to monitor/improve for the managers (by virtue of being displayed in the group standings).

I thought I'd be safe with the magic 10 points! Not many draws in the comp, though. I'm home to Austria Wien this week, I beat him away but might be taking a 4 point hit 😕

Lost to AZ away last week, Ba v Holt killed me!

Dammit I am tempted by Boateng, but I'd need to drop Robben or take a hit and lose either Nocerino or lose N'Koulou or Ramos and double on Milan

    Current squad

    Casillas, Chiotis

    Ramos, N'Koulou, Mexes, Maxi, Badstuber

    Robben, Charalambides, Nocerino, Valbuena, Gaitan

    Messi, CR7, Gomez

        Not Jerome Boateng, his brother.

Got Theo and Verm in for FPL this week

Have also put the Hernandez idea to bed, I will fill my last United slot with De Gea. Right now Ade remains favourite for 3rd striker.

      UCL:
      Artur
      Pereira, Ivanovich, Pouraitidis, Ramos
      Charalambides, Gaitan, Ramires
      Messi(c), Gomez, Benzema
      Subs: Mandanda; Kroos, Boateng, N’Koulou

Hey El Nino, im glad you've cleared up the overall vs H2H GD question, that mearns I still have a chance of qualifying 😉
Me and Pratik were debating it last night, and weren't sure: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/03/26/monday-dugout-discussion-20/comment-page-22/#comment-2933432

This week's group G results have led to the following scenarios in the third person:

If Pratik and Fuzzy win, Pratik and Fuzzy will go through due to Fuzzy’s 2-0 win over Flynn
If Archie and Pratik win then Pratik and Flynn go through as Flynn has Archie beat 2-0
If Flynn and Archie win then Flynn is through and it comes down to GD between Pratik and Archie
If Flynn and Fuzzy win then Pratik and Flynn go through

So I have only one possible set of results to see me go through

        Nope, it's not.

But it's better than if H2H GD was used, as I lost that 124-123 ish against Pratik. The width of one denied RVP bonus point 😛

Not written off completely yet. And I've got to win or draw to get a Europa league place

Wish I had Cisse instead but I've already used my FT and it's not worth the hit.

You have to play Cisse in his current form. I think I'd go for Cahill over Siggy but it's a tough one.
