Wayne Rooney’s goal is just enough as United dominate but ultimately rely on a contentious refereeing decision to hold off Fulham at Old Trafford. Here’s the notes from last night’s Gameweek climax…

Jonny Evans
The centre-back compounded his “essential” Fantasy status with the assist for United’s winner to add to his clean sheet. Maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus is beckoning, giving Evans his second consecutive double figure return as United recorded a third shut-out in as many games. Recent weeks have seen Evans’ price rise to 5.0 but, given that he offers assured starts in the arguably the strongest back four in the league, there can surely be no quibbling over his acquisition.

Wayne Rooney
Replaced after 77 minutes, Rooney nonetheless had already notched 21 goals for the season, with last night’s strike his eighth goal in his last six league starts. That proved enough to justify the Fantasy Premier League captaincy over Robin Van Persie, as the two strikers begin an ongoing head-to-head feud for the Fantasy armband and the Golden Boot for the remainder of the season. By his recent standards, Rooney’s performance was a modest one – the goal being his only effort on target in the game.

Antonio Valencia
The Ecuadorian went into the match with a vast slab of new FPL ownership, willing him to re-produce the points haul from the Molineux rout. While Valencia had a superb opportunity to seal the victory early in the second half, he emerged with a blank to frustrate his new investors. Despite that, Valencia would seem likely to hold his starting role on the right flank for the trip to Blackburn with his work rate and all-round game clearly in favour with his boss. The recent surge in ownership has seen his FPL tag rocket from 7.5 to 7.9 but, at that price, he still remains excellent value – offering a potentially rich source of attacking points for United’s favourable run-in.

Ashley Young
Young was recalled to the starting lineup with Javier Hernandez, perhaps surprisingly, dropped to the bench to make way. That saw Danny Welbeck tuck in alongside Wayne Rooney in attack. Young had ample opportunities to reward those Fantasy managers who had kept faith with the former Villa man, but saw his best efforts turned away by the athleticism of Mark Schwarzer. Young seems set to compete with Nani – who is expected back in training this week – for the role on the left, with Valencia looking more secure in Ferguson’s lineup on the opposite flank. With his start at Blackburn in question, then, Young’s stock is set to decline as Valencia’s security and price tag has him move in the opposite direction in our Watchlist rankings.

Javier Hernandez
The Mexican watched on from the bench while Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney struggled to break the Fulham resistance, despite firing a brace at Wolves last time out. As a Fantasy investment, Hernandez remains a real rotation risk, with his battle with Welbeck set to continue for the remaining matches. While Evans and Rooney look too strong to resist for two of our the three FPL slots, Hernandez is a luxury option for the third slot – the security and value offered by Valencia again looks set to prove decisive, leaving both Hernandez and Welbeck as likely short-term differentials for the final Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

about strikers who score the goal in a 1-0 not getting 3bps. is it not a striker's job to score the goals? it was the defence's job to keep out fulham, de gea's job to keep out fulham, the midfield and full backs' job to make chances which man utd had 19 of. shouldn't they all get bps too by that logic?
this isn't about how the bp system works as it's nothing to do with that, rooney didn't play 90mins and he had 2 shots off target, it's the general belief i don't agree with. strikers are meant to score most of the goals, i don't think that should mean they get most of the bps too. the current system is already very striker friendly as it is.

I agree to an extent. Personally I think Rooney should have got the 1 BP instead of Carrick.

Today's BPs are a minor victory for the current system in my view as both Rafael and Evans' sterling performances were correctly rewarded with the maximum 3 BPs.

agree with the rooney 1. i though evans fully deserved 3 under any bp system, rafael was picked out by ferguson afterwards so i'm confident in what he says.
        evans 3, rafael 2, rooney 1, valencia 1 imo

Is that in reply to someone? 🙂

But I agree, especially when you consider Vorm heroics a couple of time cleansheet + multiple saves + pen save for 0 baps.

You could have a striker that camps in the box all game, does nothing, then nods in a lucky deflection and gets 3bps

I'm sure they will review the system next season (and make it worse ;))

This is the first comment on here I've read today, but I can imagine that the majority of the complaints - if not all of them - came from people who own Rooney.

It's pointless trying to argue with most on here.

Quick question guys as I have been out of the loop is there an expected GW for the rescheduled matches to happen for those teams that have blanks coming up.

Are they expected to create DGWs or just moved the days but stay in the same GW?

It is for me, a lot will be down to news this week of GW34 fixtures. Baines could not be playing in that. Even without this uncertainty I am reluctant to get Baines and am edging towards Verm despite the city game soon. For now I am trying to forget about it until any news on GW34 is announced, but Verm is my preferred option.

      Bit of a broad subject.

My mind was made up by

      A. Having previously owned Baines, and being disappointed.

      B. Sorting the defenders by points per game, and seeing how high Verm is (and also being overjoyed with seeing kolarov top). 🙂

defences both look good, arsenal's slightly better imo, BUT only if they can keep it fit and in koscielny's case not suspended. djourou is alright filling in but i don't think there's much doubt they're better off with koscielny than without. so on clean sheets verm by a whisker.
attacking threat baines has pens, so cheap 6 pointers could come in any game, where and when? only mike dean can tell you. it's not very helpful but i'd fancy vermamelen to score more goals than baines unless they get a couple of penalties in a short space of time. for whatever reason (cough tim cahill's head forgetting where the goal is cough) baines' normally prolific assist count isn't happening this season.
overall vermaelen by a whisker for me, i think it'll backfire only if everton suddenly win a few penalties, and/or arsenal get injuries, both of which you can't really predict.

I am going Baines over Verm.

Arsenal havent kept too many clean sheets lately, especially if I consider that Everton scored and the goal was ruled offside - picky, I know, but Verm wouldnt have the 15 point haul if he had conceded and we'd have drawn.

Coupled with the fact that I dont think his goals will continue in this fashion, and the fact that I must take risks at this stage of the season, I am willing to gamble on Baines.

    Mignolet, Vorm
Kompany, J Enrique, Evans, Simpson, Senderos
    Valencia, Bale, Sigurdsson, Dempsey, McClean
    RVP, Ba, Rooney

Worth swapping Senderos to Cahill before the latter probably rises in price tonight?

It would leave me with 1.6m in the bank.

Or would i be better off getting Begovic in for Mignolet?

very different front line to most, can you not get Cahill for one of Benfica defenders if he starts later. I dont really see Khedira as a good option for a fantasy game, he may get a few RB points but Ramires or someone will get same for cheaper if you are thinking that way.

I think that unless you are fairly comfortable with the rest of your team that Baines is a bit risky at mo. I think our teams are fairly similar (double/triple Liverpool backline, Holt in, etc). My initial plan was to ditch Skrtel for one of Verm/Baines this week, but am reconsidering. Haven't decided whether I will hang on and bench Holt for forseeable future or look to upgrade and this obviously impacts defensive decision (budget) when replacing a Liverpool defender/keeper.

I think I am going to resist getting rid of Skrtel this week and play him. To avoid double up I will play Bodgan over Reina.
I agree that Baines fixtures are not as strong as they look, and over the next two Vermaelen is also away and then has City at home. Pool have Newc away and then a impotent Villa at home. He could score similar to both Baines or Verm over next two.
