Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

Damn you defensive options.. Verm, Baines, Luiz/Cahill, don't even have Evans!

Trouble is I have Pilkington, Morrison and Sessegnon and Suarez that need sorting

If you play Siggy he'll score 2 and Kelly will get a CS
If you play Kelly, Fulham will concede and Siggy will scored with 3baps

That said, the U.S. has always been a nation of overabundance ... and that has bred a culture of overindulgence.

Here's the thing, though: an otherwise normal person is not moved to racism because of expression of beliefs by others.

Now if speech incites imminent lawless action or violence: I'm with you.

My opinion is that laws like yours, and in Europe in general, don't diminish hatred -- only temporarily repress and radicalize it.

So the big question would u take a hit to bring in Baines/Vermaelain and if so who is the better option would be for Skirtel

Last week for me it was a hit to get Verm in for Enrique. This week it will be a hit to get Baines in for Skrtel. If I had to choose one I'd get Verm.

Well, I gained a point by doing it last week! What's more important is that by doing it last week I saved a hit this week so in a way it gained me 5 points.

It depends, if you have other transfers to do next week and the week after and so on then getting Verm in will be for a hit regardless of whether you do it now or in a couple of weeks. If this is the case, my advice is to do it now.

Totally understand where your coming from it also eliminates any doubt surrounding Skirtels participation in gameweek 34 whilst adding a player who is defo playing for a team currently involved in that gameweek.

Team at the moment for GW31 (1 free transfer, 0.6m in the bank):

        Krul(LIV)
        S.Kelly(NOR) Vermaelen(qpr) Enrique(new) Evans(bla)
        Bale(SWA) Valencia(bla) Dempsey(NOR)
        Rooney(bla) RVP(qpr) Suarez(new)
subs - Vorm, Simpson, McClean, Pilkington

Will be getting Siggy either this week or next for Pilkington. Just wondering whether it's worth doing it this week (as i can't see anything else that really appeals) and if so perhaps starting him instead of Enrique.

Your rank is good so I'd stick to the normal captains, RVP, Rooney etc because having Baines is differential enough. In my opinion of course.

I've posted my team below but since posting i've actually decided to go with RVP, hasn't gone 3 games without scoring all season..

Having Baines is differential enough.. thanks.

nah i'd go with your gut...if you're in a good position, you can afford to take punts to twist the knife in even deeper

What do you guys think of this team?

    Vorm (Kenny)

    Baines Vermaelen Cahill Evans (Caulker)

Dempsey (C) Valencia Miyachi (Sigurddson) (Mcclean)

    Van Persie (VC) Suarez Rooney

I Have 1 free transfer but thinking i may as well save it......?

all set for the GW, maybe a bit too heavy at the back and too light in MF though....you should prob DG Suarez and upgrade one of Miyachi or McClean (Leaning more towards McClean)

yeah thats what ive been thinking, when i have 2 FT available will probably do suarez to jelavic and mcclean to someone like ben arfa / yaya / walcott..

mcclean to yaya seems sensible...walcott only if u can stretch.

I'd prob cap Dempsey or Bale to be a bit diff...Bla away will be tougher than you think.

      I'm liking the strong back...

overall the team is well balanced and subs are in the right order...who's your other goalie?

Sorensen is my other keeper so he is basically out of the equation but Vorm is doing me proud.. Captaining Bale has certainly crossed my mind..

That looks very expensive and will also score very well imo.

Cheers Mull, the expensive backline could be risky but it is different from most of the other teams in my mini leagues so could pay off..

Kelly ahead of Evans, being the home defender?

Don't think I can trust Fulham. They conceded 3 at home vs a normally low scoring Swansea side, i'll stick with Evans I think. Thanks all the same!
