Danny Welbeck is struggling to make United’s final two games with a badly bruised ankle. Tony Pulis blames squad fatigue as Stoke stumble towards the finishing line. Kenny Dalglish admits his host of changes against Fulham may have been an error, Alex McLeish rules out hopes of a Darren Bent comeback, while reports suggest Alan Pardew may switch to 4-4-2 against Chelsea this evening.

Reports suggest Danny Welbeck could be sidelined for United’s final two games of the season. The forward left Old Trafford wearing a protective boot on his ankle on Monday evening, following a challenge by City’s Nigel De Jong and was sent for scans yesterday to ascertain the damage. While the prognosis was positive, it’s thought that Welbeck has suffered heavy bruising to his ankle, making him a doubt for Sunday’s game with Swansea and the final day trip to Sunderland. Javier Hernandez looks poised to replace him in the first XI, with fit-again Michael Owen set for a call up to the first-team squad.

Kenny Dalglish has shouldered some of the blame for Liverpool’s dire home defeat by Fulham yesterday evening. Having watched his side hammer Norwich last weekend, the Reds boss made nine changes to his first XI with the hope of offering squad players a chance to impress before Saturday’s FA Cup Final with Chelsea, but his side failed to hit their stride and fell to a fourth defeat at Anfield in the last five. With a league clash at home to Chelsea next week, Dalglish slammed last night’s display and application, admitting his raft of changes were, upon reflection, not the best idea:

Their attitude was not right and if you get a bad attitude you are going to get a bad performance and that is what we got. I am culpable as well as I changed a lot of players to try to give everyone an opportunity to get in the frame for Saturday. I suppose by doing that it was a contributory factor to what happened but you can only be fair. I tried to be fair and give everyone an opportunity – maybe I was wrong. We cannot play at that tempo, we have to play at a quicker tempo than that. We deserved nothing.

Tony Pulis has admitted his Stoke side are suffering from fatigue as the season draws to a close. With his side 1-0 down midway through the second half in last night’s game with Everton, the Potters boss threw on three substitutes and within two minutes, Stoke had drawn level. Pulis revealed post-match that the switch, which saw him replace front pair Peter Crouch and Jon Walters, was purely down to tiredness amongst his first-team regulars, with the club’s European exertions starting to take their toll on certain individuals:

I just felt Crouchy and one or two of them looked tired tonight. It was always a case of giving Rory an hour and then bringing him off because he hasn’t played for a while. I just felt it was right to do. Jon Walters has had a long season. This is 54 games now.

Angel Rangel hopes to recover from a freak hamstring injury in time for Swansea’s trip to United this weekend. The right-back missed out last Saturday in the 4-4 draw against Wolves after sustaining the injury while carrying his 18 month-old son down the stairs but revealed he hopes to return to training today ahead of Sunday afternoon’s visit to Old Trafford.

Reports in the local press have suggested that Newcastle may switch back to 4-4-2 for tonight’s trip to Chelsea. With defeat at the Bridge, coupled with a Spurs win at Bolton, likely to end their chances of a fourth place finish, Alan Pardew is allegedly contemplating the idea of pairing Papiss Cisse with Demba Ba once again, in order to get more from the latter. Ba has now gone eleven games without a goal and is clearly ineffective on the left, though Pardew revealed he is relaxed about the worst scoring drought of the forward’s career:

He is a strong person. There’s nothing I can do (about his goalscoring). The chance will come and Demba will either take it or he won’t. I do know one thing, and that is that he was a big player in the second half for us on Saturday. In all fairness, we should have scored two goals in the second half and I was pleased with him. However, I cannot determine how he is going to score a goal.

Pardew may also have a selection dilemma at right-back to deal with. Danny Simpson is still struggling to overcome the knock that saw him subbed off towards the end of Saturday’s defeat at the DW – Simpson has been an ever-present at right-back this term; if he fails to make it, Ryan Taylor or James Perch are on standby to fill in.

Alex McLeish has revealed Darren Bent is out of Villa’s final couple of matches as the club battle to beat the drop. The forward has failed to feature since Gameweek 26 due to an ankle injury but McLeish admitted that, although Bent is on the mend, he’s still a while away from full fitness:

I said “Are you ready to go on the bench at the weekend?”. He said: “No, not quite, but I’m making good progress, so boss it might be too soon”. I don’t believe there is a chance of him playing again for Villa this season. The doc thinks he’s got a chance for the Euros though, so he’s talking about four or five weeks.

The Villa boss also went on to reveal that James Collins is a doubt for this weekend’s home game with Tottenham. The centre-half was on the bench for last Saturday’s trip to West Brom but has failed to train due to a groin problem – with Richard Dunne back to partner Carlos Cuellar, though, McLeish is happy with cover in central defence, with Villa chalking up two clean sheets in their last three.

Nigel Reo-Coker is winning his fitness battle to overcome a leg problem ahead of tonight’s visit of Spurs. The Bolton midfielder was forced off towards the end of last weekend’s draw at Sunderland with the injury but has responded well to treatment and is in line for a return. The Trotters are sweating on the fitness of Chris Eagles, though; the former Burnley man was taken off just after the hour mark at the Stadium of Light with a hamstring problem.

    Front 7

    Sess Valencia Demps HBA
    Cisse RVP Torres

    a) Cisse > Rooney
    b) Torres > Rooney
    c) Cisse/HBA > Rooney/Moses or Maloney
    d) C isse/Torres > Rooney/Aguero

Surely RDM will keep Drog for the big games?

I've gone up from rank 26k to 10k this DGW but i'm still so pissed off at the Pienaar & Walker ordeal. Looking at how close things are sort of 5k-20k, and extra 25 points would've put me in with a chance of beating my previous best.

All at the fault of me in a rush to go to the pub. Pfft.

    Anyway,
    Adebayor > Rooney or RvP

I have Evans and Valencia but no Arsenal cover.

Attacking wise our whole team was great coming out of our own half, including Nani, but as soon as we crossed that half way line every one turned to mush. So yes, as our main attacking threat and most in form midfielder not taking one shot on goal, I'd say he was awful.

ir Alex Ferguson has £100m worth of used banknotes neatly divided into stacks of £50s, £20s, £10s and £5s and he is going to spend it all on buying the sort of players that will allow him to come second to Manchester City yet again next season. Top of his list is the trick-filled, lubricious Lille midfielder Eden Hazard. But the Scot is not the only one rolling his eyes across the crowded dance floor at the Belgian – the Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, is also interested.

Nah, Cisse > Torres instead. 🙂

I reckon Man United going all out attack will play against Rooneys likelihood to score. Hernandez at top, Nani/Young and Valencia further foward with Rooney creating.

Do Cisse->Rooney this week followed by Rooney->Aguero/Tevez for gw38. Wait for Tottenham's performance today before you decide what to do with Bale/Vdv. If they look in good touch, you might want to keep both.

So far I've had a dire week with Cisse as captain and a bunch of other non-performers including Dempsey, Bale, HBA, siggy etc. It's ironic that those players got me to the top of my ML but to make matters worse I had RVP and Clichy on the bench.

Am not sure what changes to make for next GW but will see how tonight goes for Newcastle.

    Current team:
    Vorm, Mign
    Clichy, Hibbert, JEvans, Simpson, Turner
    Dempsey, HBA, Pienaar, Siggy, Bale
    RVP, Rooney, Cisse

    Changes:
    Turner>Verm?
    HBA/Siggy> Nasri/Silva etc

Any advice? Could sit tight for the next week and use the FT?

I can see Sir Alex bringing in a few decent players. I am hoping he signs Siggy and Hazard and maybe another leftback as Fabio is not good enough backup for Evra.

Surprised by this as when I've seen Fabio (admittedly more at left back) he looks good and gets forward. 1st choice right back for the Champs Lge Final last year, but seemed to fall out of favour. O'Shea was a handy utility player to have.

I think the highest point scorer and a big differential as well will be Odemwingie. Has had many shots on goal, was unlucky not to score vs villa - bolton will need to play an open game and score goals and will be very vulnerable at the back - Odemwingie hat-trick for me. The other obvious option is RVP.

ok sometimes you know Football Manager is unrealistic

John Terry has just resigned as England captain on my game.

In real life they basically had to pull his arm off to get the armband off him.

On that note, who do we think Woy will name as skipper?

That team looks great but I don't think Richards and Walker would work. I'd swap Richards for Smalling.

Maybe you're right about the Walker-Richards dynamic, however I am confident Micah could pull of playing CB in a 3 man backline.

Anyway, I am glad Hodgson has the formation before player perspective, hopefully he will pick a formation suiting the general English skill-st, and then find the appropriate players to fill it. This might lead to some "strange" player picks, but hopefully we don't have to see Gerrard left wing and Heskey right wing kind of stuff.

there is so much wrong with that team.

3-6-1 - what sort of a formation is that?
          Wilshere isnt fit
          Milner doesnt play
Baines is not good enough for that level

you could also call it 3-4-3

                the bottom line is
                3 centre backs
                2 wing backs
2 or 3 centre mids (at least one outright CDM)
                3 or 2 forwards

big fan of THUD, real shame.

Its funny as imo Parker is only the 3rd best holding mid at Spurs. dont know why people give him so much credit. Is it just because the alternative is Barry?

Huddlestone is the best passer Englands got bar Scholes and with the pace on the wings he'd be invaluable.

In the season Spurs finished 4th, he was one of the best players in the league. He's also one of the best strikers of a ball you've ever seen. Anyone who disagrees hasn't watched him enough. I know he has his downfalls (lack of mobility etc) but he had lost a lot of weight and alongside a quicker midfielder with more bite (Wilshere) he'd excel. True story.

the fact that you have Smalling at CB renders the rest of the team useless.

JT is the best english CB. end of.

Carrick has just been voted the fans player of the year, people who generally know nothing about football think he's useless, fine with me.

You put 4 chelsea players in your england XI. If that happens (it won't) i'll support the germans instead. Cole is allowed, just.

Take emotion out of it? That's what football is.

i think that shows how (relatively) poor your Utd side is this season that Carrick got player of the year. I am not saying he is useless but he is not a top class player for the big games - see your champions league campaign for proof. You need a dominant ball playing CM desperately (most utd fans I know agree)

Admittedly 4 chelsea players is slight wishful thinking. 3 should definitely be in, Cahill I only added as I dont see many alternatives.
