Two games left and level on points with City, United’s attempts to retain their Premier League trophy could well be scuppered by goal difference now. Currently eight goals behind their rivals, it’s perhaps a tall order to haul in such a superior margin but with Swansea rolling up to Old Trafford this Sunday, it’s a fair assumption that Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will go on the attack in their final home game of the campaign.

Even if City drop points at Newcastle earlier in the day, United are unlikely to play it cagey. A final day trip to Sunderland is hardly the easiest of tasks – the Black Cats have tasted defeat just once at the Stadium of Light since Martin O’Neill’s arrival and have returned three clean sheets in the last five in front of their home fans. Three points, and plenty of goals, will be a must for Ferguson this weekend.

Swansea’s recent away form will afford United plenty confidence. The Welsh side have conceded three goals in two of their last three on the road and, with Brendan Rodgers trialling a 3-4-3 last weekend, shipped four at home to relegated Wolves. The new system is likely to be ditched, with a 4-3-3 offering a little more solidity but, with the Red Devils desperate for inspiration after Monday night’s limp display at the Etihad, Nani could well be the spark United need.

A look at his recent form shows that, prior to Monday’s game, Nani had produced attacking returns in four of his last five matches. Scoring against Villa and Everton in his previous two, the 9.9 priced midfielder had also provided his Fantasy owners with four assists and four bonus points over those featured fixtures, despite coming off the bench in two of those appearances. Antonio Valencia, on the other hand, has a single assist in his last five, while Ashley Young has a pair of assists in his last five – both from highly debatable penalty decisions after theatrical dives against QPR and Villa. With both players appearing from the subs bench on Monday, Nani appears to have been promoted up the pecking order and his start looks the most secure.

The Portuguese winger was hardly helped by Monday’s change of formation. Shifted to the right, with Ryan Giggs handed a role on the left as United lined up in a 4-5-1, Nani returned no more than two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points but Ferguson will surely revert to 4-4-2 on Sunday once again. With eight goals to his name already – compared to Valencia and Young’s combined tally of nine – last season’s top scoring FPL player will need to step up this weekend and, if goals are to be on the agenda, he’s more than likely to play a significant part.

More on the Rooney v RVP

Of the matches were Hernandez has played around 60-90 mins with Rooney on the pitch the potatoe lad has done ok. There aren't that many matches to look at really to categorically say Rooney performs worse FPL wise when Hernandez plays....and it is hard to judge based on chico sub appearances as that is towards the end when gameplay changes.

Couldn't you have asked to an article on this? Just curious.

You should probably have had a look at fixtures outside of the PL in order to accurately compare his play with Chico vs Welbeck. I agree though that I don't think it will harm his scoring in anyway. He loves a good through ball to Chico, he just needs to f*cking stay onside.

Interesting. I am more tempted by Hernandez then Rooney for some reason. Think he's due a big week with all of Valencia' aimless power crosses.

Devils advocate for a second. (Partly because I don't have RVP now and can't afford to buy him back.)

What's with the captaining of RVP?

Roon at home to Swansea, a Swansea who let Wolves put FOUR goals past them last week. Man U will be absolutely seething after their loss to City and have a lot to prove.

Arsenal are without their two top midfielders - Arteta and Walcott - will RVP even get any ball?

Swansea toyed with their formation and clearly it didn't work for the entire duration of the game. Rodgers would not be stupid enough to try that again.

Arsenal are still capable of scoring heavily, I'd like to see the Ox play a part in this one.

Yep, Arsenal are great for a feel good result to paper over the problems. (15pts or so off the lead is not good enough no matter how much Wenger plays up qualifying for the competition for umpteen years on the trot, that we don't even win by being not good enough to win or our own league title subsequently. Still we are making a profit.)

The main point however is that I see this being a 4-0, 4-1 or 5-1 type scoreline with RVP possibly getting a hat-trick. So cast my differences with the manager aside, RVP is a top candidate for the armband whereas Man U could see points returns from Valencia, Nani, Rooney or Hernandez, whether RVP will score well if the goals go in. Little things like RVP taking corners and fewer candidates worthy of getting BPs also support RVP as (c).

Newcastle, having conceeded four themselves to a relegation candidate, then kept a clean sheet against a team who'd scored six in their previous game.

Sometimes you've got too look at the bigger picture. Swansea have been doing well and have a lot of quick industrious players in midfield which is exactly what the likes of Carrick, Scholes and Giggs struggle with if United play their anticipated 4-4-2.

RVP has been in something of a slump lately but are playing a team who seem to have gone on holiday since they've been clear of the relegation battle.

For me both Rooney and RVP are candidates for the (C) this week but there won't be much in it

Help needed. I need to catch up in my mini league and need goals (multiple if poss!)

I have a defensive nightmare with injuries so will have to take a 4pt hit.

    I have

    Kenny ( Vorm)
    Verm, Rangel(50%)Simpson(75%)Alonso(won't play)Evans(out)
    Demps, Siggy, Valencia, Peinaar, Cabaye
    Jelavic, Cisse, Tevez

Question is, I am bringing in Hibbert in Defence as possible assists/goals
Do I keep Tevez and bring in a midfielder or do I ditch Tevez and if so Rooney or RVP?

    ????????

My opinion: forget about your defence. Goals aren't generally likely so getting a defender is only really going to make you 8 points or so over two gameweeks. To make up a lead, you need to go for maximum impact with your remaining transfers. I have the same frontline as you and I dropped Tevez for RVP but maybe you need to gamble on Tevez doing more.

      Suggested punts:

      Hernandez
      Nasri
VDV (not that much of a punt)
      Moses

Is a hit worth it? The statistics

Lets assume you wanted to do Cisse>RVP for a hit

The odds of them scoring are as follows

    RVP: 1 goal= 8/15, 2 goals= 2/1, 3goals=8/1
    Cisse: 1 goal=13/8, 2 goals=9/1. 3goals=40/1

4 points per goal plus 2 points for playing=

    (15/8 *4+1/2*4+1/8*4) + 2= a predicted score of 12.5
    (8/13*4+1/9*4+1/40*4) + 2= a predicted score of 4.68

12.5-4.68=7.82 which, according to the odds will be the difference between RVP and cisse so a 4 point hit makes sense

This of course does not take into account assists and bonus but thought it was interesting anyway

The formula is: Player you want to transfer in (odds anytime*4+odds for 2 goals*4+odds for hatrick*4)+ 2 –(odds anytime*4+odds for 2 goals*4+odds for hatrick*4) +2

Remember to switch the odds around (i.e 2/1 is 1/2 otherwise it doesn’t make sense)

This could also be used for clean sheets etc

      You srue that makes sense?

It seems to be implying that there is a 15/8 chance of RVP scoring 1 goal, which cant be right can it? Isnt it more like 15/(8+15) i.e. 15/23?

Also, the odds of 2 goals will include the odds of 1 goal, for example, so I dont know if you can simply add these together as though they were independent events...

For instance, odds of 1/1 would represent a 50% chance of scoring, rather than 100%, just as 1/2 represents a 1/3 chance of scoring (so that for every 3 times you take the bet, you will lose twice and win once, remaining effectively neutral).

I repeated the analysis, making what I consider to be the necessary adjustments to the formula.

Excluding assists, BPs and playing points, ends up with RVP scoring an expected 2 points more than Cisse.

I could, of course, have made an error.

Interestingly, the chances of RVP scoring ONLY 1 goal is slightly lower than his chances os scoring EXACTLY 2 goals. This alone gives me cause to question my methods! Lol

For each of the 1 goal, 2 goal and 3 goal scenarios, I adjusted the odds as follows (e.g. for RVP).

His chance of scoring AT LEAST 1 goal is 15/23 (66%). But this will include the probability of him scoring 2 goals, 3 goals, 4 goals etc. I assumed in my analysis that the odds you quoted for 2 goals were for 2 OR MORE goals, i.e. if he scored 3 goals, the bet for 2 goals would pay out - if this is not the case then Id have to adjust the calc accordingly.

So, RVP chance of scoring EXACTLY one goal is 15/23 - 1/3 (32%). Similarly, his chance of scoring EXACTLY 2 goals is 1/3 - 1/9 (22%). I took the chance of EXACTLY 3 goals to be 1/9 (11%). I multiplied these three outcomes by 4, 8 and 12 respectively (ignoring altogether the possibility of scoring 4 or more goals) to deduce that RVP's expected points (from goals alone) is 4.39.

For Cisse, the same calculation gives 2.22.

I had an error, which Ive sicne corrected, so that the "anomaly" that I described earlier (RVP chances of 1 goal being less than his chance of 2 goals) is gone.

Im reasonably confident that the calc is correct, but of coruse it ignores assists and bonus points.

                What do you think?

Wow this is impressive, I definitely underestimated how complicated it was! But looking through your calculations everything seems correct. Do you have a background in statistics?

It is very interesting and I can see it being useful if there is a website that shows the odds for scoring the exact amount of goals, which would make it (relatively easy) to make a formula that is useable.

The amount of people on here that want to know if a hit is worth it shows the demand. I am currently learning how to make apps, if we could come up with a formula whereby all they do is input the odds for the players it could be useful (and potentially profitable?)

How much is the Championship Playoff win worth in comparison to finishing 1st and 2nd in the league? I know they say winning promotion to the PL via the playoffs is the biggest prize in football I just wondered how it compares to automatic promotion?

In monetary terms I don't think there's a big (if any) difference between promotion to the PL as champions or via the playoffs. It's a thing of pride to go up as champions really.

The same. At the point of the play-offs those who finished 1st and 2nd have secured their 'riches' whereas the others battle out the final spot to the promised land. Surely you didn't think they got even more money for failing a la Wenger.

Firstly, 1 is a silly choice. Everybody knows City are more likely to score than West Brom. So go with Bogdan.

I also have both players and have decided to play them both and bench Cisse. Would you agree or disagree with that move?

    Krul (Vorm)
    Walker McAuley Jagielka (Evans Caulker)
    Valencia Pienaar Mata Bale (Siggy)
    van Persie Rooney Weimann

    Considering to do:

    - Mata -> Nani + Evans -> Hibbert (-4p): Then bench McAuley or Weimann

This means dobliing up on Everton defense away against wolves (any options to Hibbert?) and 3 offensive ManUtd players, which I think will tear Swansea apart.

final stats on the Rooney RVP captaincy thing

So looking at home points as a whole RVP does indeed shade it....but only just

    Rooney home - 118 pts
    RVP - home - 123 pts

I am literally going to flip a coin tomorrow morning. Both have a lot to play for, both have good home records, Rooney's is marginally better of late but his fixtures have been stronger.

Another way to look at it is that if city beat newcastle I think the man utd game could be very flat. They must know that the title is pretty much over. Arsenal have to go for the throat against norwich whose players (like sunderland) are already on holiday.

Feck Jonty I can't get this wrong. My whole season depends on getting this call correct. ML rival(35 pts behind) has Cisse/Rvp/Rooney like me. I'm thinking he might gamble with Rvp since he surely thinks I'm going Rooney. ML rival no 2(50pts behind) I know will go Rooney(c) since he has no Rvp.

Then again rival no 2 might just go Rooney(c) to protect his 15pt lead form position no3 since there is 80 pounds at stake in another league they are playing in.

          So what do I do?

If you have both and they captain the one that goes mental even a mega score of say 20 (40 for captain) would still give you at least 15 pt gap against nearest rival.

I have the same issue One rival only has Rooney, another only has RVP....

Just go with who you genuinely think will score more.. As you can see I've gone through the ringer with the stats here and the conclusion I've ended up with is RVP.

Boils down to what is worse....Rvp(c) in early kick off and he gets 4 pts...resulting in a Sat evening of screaming at the kids, kicking at the dog, kissing the wife on the cheek...with rivals having Rooney(c) on Sunday...or rival no 1 getting a 26pt haul early on closing gap to less then 10 pts... and I've got all my hopes pinned on Rooney on Sunday.

I think it is. It's exactly what I was looking at but I don't think there's a point for me as the € leader has both.

On the subject of captain choice, Andy's just posted an article about that very thing.

Going into the last two GWks with a small lead. Which of the following players do I need to bring in to protect this (in order of preference)

    RVP
    Rooney
    VDV
    Valencia
    Vermaelen
    Torres

Thinking Rooney top of the list but not sure if I need RVP or can live with Aguero/Jellyfish and get Vermaelen in for one of my crocked defenders (Cahill/Evans/Simpson)

Rafael seems to be a good punt for the last 2 GW. He’s got 6 or more points in 4 of his last 5 starts. But is he likely to start in the remaining two games?

I think Rafael will do good against Swansea. He usually struggles against bigger physical players but Swansea are full of small pacey players, just like Rafael.
