In addition to the Team Preview articles for Euro 2012, we’re also covering any friendlies between now and the tournament kick-off on Friday June 8. Last night saw Poland and Holland get their preparations under way, with showdowns against defeat Latvia and Bayern Munich respectively:

Poland 1-0 Latvia
Poland kicked off their run of friendlies ahead of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament with a 1-0 win over Latvia last night. With three players still to omit from his provisional squad, Franciszek Smuda fielded a handful of reserve options and regulars in his first XI, while Wojciech Szczesny and Robert Lewandowski were given the night off after both arrived at the national team’s training camp earlier in the day. Hannover forward Artur Sobiech – on as a sub for Pawel Brozek just before the hour mark – grabbed the only goal, with Kamil Grosicki providing the assist.

Poland Team: Fabianski; Jodlowiec (Kaminski 64), Wasilewski, Wojtkowiak, Boenisch (Wawrzyniak, 71); Polanski, Murawski; Grosicki, Mierzejewski (Kucharczyk 46), Wolski (Matuszczyk 46); Brozek (Sobiech 56).

Bayern Munich 3-2 Holland
Holland fielded a mainly second choice backline for the game against Bayern – Joris Mathijsen was the only regular – and shipped three goals at the Allianz Arena. Up front, Jan Klass Huntelaar started ahead of Robin Van Persie and grabbed a goal, as did winger Luciano Narsingh; Dirk Kuyt and Rafael Van der Vaart provided the assists. Bert Van Marwijk rang the changes at half-time, making seven substitutions, and also introduced Arjen Robben later in the second half – the winger was jeered by many in the home crowd after his Champions League Final penalty miss against Chelsea last Saturday.

Holland Starting XI: Vorm; Boulahrouz, Mathijsen,Vlaar, Willems; De Jong,Van der Vaart; Narsingh, Sneijder, Kuyt; Huntelaar

Other news

David Villa is out of Spain’s plans for the upcoming tournament. The Barcelona man has failed to recover from the broken leg sustained in Barcelona’s World Club Championship game with Al Sadd last December. With Carlos Puyol almost certain to miss out when Vicente Del Bosque names his squad on Sunday, Villa took to twitter to reveal:

I’ve tried, but I can’t be 100% to play the Eurocup. I called Del Bosque. It’s the honest thing. Thanks to all of you for your support. I’ll continue working to return as soon as possible with Barca and Spain.

Shay Given has picked up a minor knee injury in training for the Republic of Ireland. The Aston Villa man is rated “touch and go” for Saturday’s friendly against Bosnia after a scan on Monday confirmed the problem. The FAI revealed the keeper is set to skip the next few days training as a “precautionary measure”.

    Please RMET

    Given -- Sifakis
    Strinić -- Zhirkov -- M. Kadlec -- Debuchy -- K. Papadopoulos
    Sneijder -- Mandžukić -- Özil -- Cabaye -- Källström
    Ibrahimović -- Huntelaar -- Lewandowski

Sifakis may change to another Greek keeper depending on the friendlies, which might free up 0.5m for Strinić > Perquis

Christina - I won't be talked out of Huntelaar

Mandi is there rather than Jellyman simply because I wouldn't know which striker to drop for Jellyman.

Cabaye is there because of a half-assed theory about defensive midfielders and recovered balls. But I'm not sure it really works - suggested alternatives? (He's 6.5m)

Currently plays for Zenit, has scored 7 goals in 25 games. Plays in centre mid, but furthest forward of the 3. He has scored in recent internationals, and offers a cheap option into the Russian team, who can be regarded as one of the favourites to progress through the group

Just based on what I remember from looking at the qualifiers.
I think kranjcar is slowly being moved out of the team anyway. (and as Hillbilly pointed out injured).

Kranjcar still might find his place in starting team

it's battle beetween raktitic(sevilla) ,Perisic(B.Dortmund) and Kranjcar(Spurs) for spot on left

any of them got even chanses to feature

and Krajcar is not injureed anymore

        Good to know about Perisic.

Ye was thinking maybe a couple will come in for GW2 this is more of a template, haven't considered WC strategy yet.

Balotelli could be a bargain, think he's been overlooked. If he starts he's going to play very advanced and will probably have penalties. Not sure how fit Cassano is since his long absence, so Balo could be the main man,

I'm not seeing many RMT with Nasri in them. He seems a perfect choice and late captain contender for the final day. Knows the English game (as in a bit rubbish technically), was devastating against England a while back and should be nailed on. Can see a goal or two from him. Am I deluding myself or missing something like an injury or falling out with the manager?

His tosserishness is not in question. I just remember how wonderful he played against England before. They just couldn't cope with his quickness of turn or technical ability. I think Terry and Cahill are pretty robust defensively, but I just can't see them keeping France out. One or more of Nasri, Benzema or Ribery will score.

Hello everyone, I have just recently joined this forum and have joined a couple of your members Euro 2012 Pro Leagues. Cheers for that, much appreciated.Anyway, just thought I,d post my Mcdonalds Team
    Neuer Scezny

    Mertesacker Perquis Anyukov Zhirkov Pieters

Iniesta Nasri Elm Mandzukic De Jong

    Llorente Elmander Benzema

I was hoping for some advice/opinion on the actual set up of the team. I always double up on my defenders, thats kind of set in stone, and i tend to double up on my Midfield/Attacking combos. I was wondering if this is the best way to go or is it better to have one MF/Att player from say 7 or 8 differant countries.
    Cheers, Dave

Don't expect much from Elm and Elmander, Ibra will likely outscore them both together. Iniesta out of form, but could still do ok. De Jong is kind of pointless and Mertesacker isn't a starter.

Also make sure to read the rules, subs section especially!

Cheers for the input. I had read that Sweden could be going with the idea of playing Elmander as a lone striker with Ibra playing in the hole. De jong was afiller really, just thought his recovered balls etc points might make up for the fact that he is just as likely to try and remove someones windpipe halfway through a match.

Morning all, care to RMT? I haven't really got the foggiest what I'm doing. Figured I'd go Schweinsteiger as he has a decent scoring record, penos and should get 1 or 2 for recovered balls.

    Papadopoulos Strinic Zhirkov Kadlec Olsson
    Schweinsteiger Sneijder Yarmolenko Kuba Mandzukic

Ibra can score against any of the teams in group D
Jelavic can maybe score 1 against Ireland, but even that's far from granted

Ibra is also 100% nailed on for all three and on pens.

it's always world class over form for me

Jela more likely to score against Ireland then Ibra against Ukraine, imo.

The "manager substitution" mechanism at http://en.euro2012fantasy.uefa.com/ is an utter wreck. You can swap out players/change captain after a match who under perform? What genius thought that up? I wish Ipswich Town could do that after 90 minutes, travel back in time and swap out a player.

Totally spoiled it. You should set sail with your XI and thats it unless they dont play just like FPL.

Its not that bad, as you only have three subs, so you cant just swap everyone. Personally I want a game without subs at all.

It means you're always going to play the players who play first in a GW regardless of their ability - it loses the spice of making the right call for a player to play or not. If they don't perform you just get another go as long as you go back to the website in time (and look at the McDonalds logo again).

It's critically hamstrung the strategic gambling part of the game for me. Massive shame.

Nothing new though. Like CL and WC. There is a game somewhere where you pick a squad and can't make any transfers for the whole tournament. Believe me that is even worse.

I quite like it...leaves managers with some tricky decisions. EG if your captain gets 6pts, doubled to 12pts do you stick with him or chance your luck with another playing a later day.

      I don't think it's that bad.

Let's say your day 1 captain scores 6 - will you keep him as a captain or change it to someone with potential to score more? ...only to see him do nothing 😀

Retrospectively adjusting your XI based on performance just seems crap and unrealistic. Choose your XI and play them, then weep when you don't get it right. That was the magic of FPL last season.

I hope to God they don't introduce this to FPL next time around.

There are two ways to look at it.
I think it makes it a very good squad game. You can't get away with the Shane Ferguson-esque players in this game and the one who picks the most balanced 15 men squad will be profited.
Also there is no agony of seeing your benched players rack up scores and you can do nothing but hope that 1 or 3 of your regular starters miss out.
I quite liked this formate in UCL as well as the world cup fantasy.

My assistant manager in the Maccy D game is working against me.

Here's his latest pearl of wisdom "Nasri is on your bench but I think he'll score more points than K. Papadopoulos. You should swap them."

No, Nasri plays on the last day and Papadoplous plays the first. I'll swap them directly if the greece defender doesn't get me points.

Does the assistant manager know the rules?

I love snakes. Had a boomslang once, in South Africa. The Biology master found out, and threw a huge wobbly. Would have thrown a bigger one if he had known we milked his puff adder the day before ...

Both Robin and I got beaten six ...
