In addition to the Team Preview articles for Euro 2012, we’re also covering any friendlies between now and the tournament kick-off on Friday June 8. Last night saw Poland and Holland get their preparations under way, with showdowns against defeat Latvia and Bayern Munich respectively:

Poland 1-0 Latvia
Poland kicked off their run of friendlies ahead of next month’s Euro 2012 tournament with a 1-0 win over Latvia last night. With three players still to omit from his provisional squad, Franciszek Smuda fielded a handful of reserve options and regulars in his first XI, while Wojciech Szczesny and Robert Lewandowski were given the night off after both arrived at the national team’s training camp earlier in the day. Hannover forward Artur Sobiech – on as a sub for Pawel Brozek just before the hour mark – grabbed the only goal, with Kamil Grosicki providing the assist.

Poland Team: Fabianski; Jodlowiec (Kaminski 64), Wasilewski, Wojtkowiak, Boenisch (Wawrzyniak, 71); Polanski, Murawski; Grosicki, Mierzejewski (Kucharczyk 46), Wolski (Matuszczyk 46); Brozek (Sobiech 56).

Bayern Munich 3-2 Holland
Holland fielded a mainly second choice backline for the game against Bayern – Joris Mathijsen was the only regular – and shipped three goals at the Allianz Arena. Up front, Jan Klass Huntelaar started ahead of Robin Van Persie and grabbed a goal, as did winger Luciano Narsingh; Dirk Kuyt and Rafael Van der Vaart provided the assists. Bert Van Marwijk rang the changes at half-time, making seven substitutions, and also introduced Arjen Robben later in the second half – the winger was jeered by many in the home crowd after his Champions League Final penalty miss against Chelsea last Saturday.

Holland Starting XI: Vorm; Boulahrouz, Mathijsen,Vlaar, Willems; De Jong,Van der Vaart; Narsingh, Sneijder, Kuyt; Huntelaar

Other news

David Villa is out of Spain’s plans for the upcoming tournament. The Barcelona man has failed to recover from the broken leg sustained in Barcelona’s World Club Championship game with Al Sadd last December. With Carlos Puyol almost certain to miss out when Vicente Del Bosque names his squad on Sunday, Villa took to twitter to reveal:

I’ve tried, but I can’t be 100% to play the Eurocup. I called Del Bosque. It’s the honest thing. Thanks to all of you for your support. I’ll continue working to return as soon as possible with Barca and Spain.

Shay Given has picked up a minor knee injury in training for the Republic of Ireland. The Aston Villa man is rated “touch and go” for Saturday’s friendly against Bosnia after a scan on Monday confirmed the problem. The FAI revealed the keeper is set to skip the next few days training as a “precautionary measure”.

Anyone had a look at doing the Metro Euro game?

If you think the Pro or McDs games are complicated, you should be grateful! Try getting your head around this:

Metro Fantasy Football International is broken down into 6 Match Weeks:

The first 3 Match Weeks consist of the Group Stages (consisting of 8 games per Match Week with each team playing once in each) with the final 3 Match Weeks being made up of the Knockout Stages (Match Week 4 contains the Quarter-Finals, Match Week 5 the Semi-Finals and Match Week 6 the Final itself).

At the advertised start date and time for Match Weeks 1 - 4, you will be allocated the following:

    ■1 x FREE Captain change
■2 x FREE transfers and 4 x additional transfers that will incur a 25 point penalty on usage.
At the advertised start date and time for Match Week 5, you will be allocated the following:

    ■1 x FREE Captain change
■2 x FREE transfers and 6 x additional transfers that will incur a 25 point penalty on usage.

Any substitutions, transfers or change of Captain become active at the start of the next game taking place in the Tournament.

If a player scores points for your team in a Match Week and then you substitute or transfer that player out of your team before the end of the same Match Week, your team will not lose those points scored by that player.

You will not receive any FREE Captain changes or Transfers (free or otherwise) at the start of Match Week 6.

the only thing i'm unsure of is if you transfer out your captain does the new player automatically take his captaincy without using up the 1 free captain change....

that's how it worked for the world cup one. I was the only one in my league to understand it and I won by several million zillion points as a result.

I just kept it on a striker place and swapped between the likes of RVP - Villa - Messi depending on fixtures.

Also be aware that defensive mids can really mop up in that game....Xabi Alonso was a goldmine for points.

I'm only focusing on Maccy D's this time round, but did enjoy the metro one during the world cup. The live scoring, in fact the whole opta scoring in general that they use, is great. Wish the FPL used that instead for the bonus points.

Yeah, there's a lot to be said for Metro - the opta-type scoring, the general look and feel - but sometimes they drop the ball in terms of interface.

The ability to make transfers during the game week, that take effect from the next kick off, and the fact that some of those are free, some are paid for, and there's a overall limit, make it all very complex and hard to plan.

I'm not sure whether you lose your initial captain points if you switch the armband.

it does look like they've changed that captain rule. and agree, does appear a little more complicated this time round.

I'll be doing the prem league one just like this year and urge others too...helps understand the opta much more and is a great game.

yeh, its kind of ended up like that,

        wasnt intentional,

mainly because of the german rotation thing, going for robben instead of van persie - again because of huntelaar situation (whats your take on that?) and the potential value of dowski and jelavic.

Lindegaard, and one of your group A defenders has to go. You can't have one from each team and expect to do well with Lewandowski and Dzagoev in your team.

In every case, you're drawing a blank from at least 2 players.

      I'd lose Dzagoev.

I think Russian players are all really overpriced. Shirokov is their cheapest midfielder, and he plays defensive midfield.

Mandzukic at 6.0 is out of position as a forward.

Surely there's better value to be had out there.

He played center back at Euro 2008. I just don't think he's as attacking as people think he'll be. All the onus will be on the Russia front 3.

That was a long way back when he used to play as a CB for Zenit too.
But now he plays as a attacking midfielder & is threatening in front of goal.

im with you Camzy, good point / advise, been thinking that.

I suppose really the idea was to get left with 2 / 5 defenders each week, picking 1 from each team in group A spreads the bets a bit.

Dowski and Dzagoev are 'contradictions', granted. I think I'm gonna go with Dowski regardless because he seems perfect for the system' - early in game week, potential big score / captin and only 8 mil.

GW2 , Then you have the advantages of the WC for the rest of the tournament rather than one match, you get plenty of subs inbetween the quarters/semis/finals , so I wouldn't hold off for 1 match.

        GW 3 for me.

Teams that qualify after two games will rest all their players leaving you in trouble for GW 3.

Also, there are no real advantages to the wildcard beyond the group stage because we're all back to square 1 for the knockout stages.

Gw2 means you'll be able to trim the fat and bring in the cheapest defensive options for the teams you want and put the money into forwards or whoever seem to be doing the business.
Gw3 means you won't have a handful of players being rested when their team has already qualified for the quarter finals and might pick up a few bargains.

        Good arguments.

But hopefully, with enough effort, we can get the cheapest defensive options through research ahead of time.

Also, GW 2 throws in some big match ups like Germany > Holland which will be tough to navigate and lead to some discarding their players.

I have to disagree with your assessment of Robben.

He's arguably Holland's most talented player. He'll start every game at right wing, and will definitely see more game time than RVP or Huntelaar.

We'll agree to disagree. Denmark have a compact defence and robben likes to cut inside, meaning hes gonna get smothered. I see that game as a close 2-1 to Holland.

Christina was fooling around with a team of penalty takers. So here's who I've got to take them. Question marks over those I'm not sure about.

    Poland - Blaszczykowski
    Greece - Karagounis
    Czech Republic - Kadlec
    Russia - Arshavin?

    Germany - Schweinsteiger/Podolski
    Portugal - Ronaldo
    Netherlands - Van Persie?
    Denmark - Rommedahl?

    Spain - Alonso?
    Italy - Pirlo
    Ireland - Keane
    Croatia - Srna

    England - Gerrard?
Ukraine - Gusev (Shevchenko if he plays)
    France - Nasri/Benzema
    Sweden - Ibrahimovic

You have to go back to Germany's match against Ivory Coast in 2009 to find the last time when Podolski and Schweinsteiger were both on the pitch when a penalty was awarded. Podolski took it then, but they've both scored penalties for Germany since in each other's absence.

If you were to compare the Euro teams with PL teams what would they be (fantasy wise). I'll start off with the easy ones:

    Greece=Aston Villa (boring and defensive)
Holland=Arsenal (Very good going forward, poor defensively)
    England=Liverpool (Expensive and poor)

I really think Ibra is a must have. He's been in immense form coming into the season, he's only priced at 8M and gives you a great captain choice on the last day against Ukraine.

I will have other captain choices, but you could be right. I might change Lew -> Ibra. I wish I could have 4 strikers.

I'm in the same boat as you. Frontline of Lew + Robben + Ibra. If Jelly is confirmed I think I'm going to drop Lew for him and bring in Blaz into the MF instead of Mandzukic.

So therefore Piczszek + Blaz. Also a cheeper combination!
