France received a morale-boost after battling back to overcome Iceland at home in Sunday’s only friendly, with a couple of their back-four showcasing their attacking potential. Elsewhere, Holland are sweating on the fitness of Joris Mathijsen, Roy Hodgson is pessimistic over Gareth Barry’s chances and Vicente Del Bosque axes a couple of forwards from Spain’s final 23 man squad.

France 3 Iceland 2
Laurent Blanc fielded what many regard as his best available back-four but, despite extending their unbeaten run to 19 games, France were unconvincing in defence against Iceland. With Yohan Cabaye playing as the only holding midfielder, Blanc admitted the hosts failed to find a balance between defence and attack in and went two behind in the first half before a host of changes brought them back into the match. Olivier Giroud – on as a sub for Karim Benzema – provided a pair of assists, while Franck Ribery climbed off the bench to grab an equaliser. Mathieu Debuchy and Adil Rami both bagged a goal apiece from the back, with the former – costing 5.5 in the McDonald’s Fantasy game to Rami’s 6.0, the better value of the duo.

France Starting XI: Mandanda; Debuchy, Mexes, Rami, Evra; Ben Arfa (Giroud 59), Gourcuff (Ribery), Cabaye (Diarra 59), Nasri (Martin 60), Menez (Valbuena 75); Benzema (Malouda 60)

Other News
Roy Hodgson has admitted England are sweating over the fitness of Gareth Barry after the midfielder limped out of the 1-0 win over Norway. Barry lasted just 27 minutes before being replaced by Jordan Henderson in Hodgson’s debut match and could be well be in doubt for the upcoming tournament, according to his manager:

I’m not prepared to say it’s serious. But it is certainly going to dominate our attention and we don’t have a lot of time if the scan shows it is something more than minor.

Vicente Del Bosque announced Spain’s final 23 yesterday. Adrian Lopez missed out despite scoring and assisting in the 2-0 win over Serbia, while Roberto Soldado also failed to survive the chop – it now looks likely to be a fight between the two Fernandos, Torres and Llorente, and Alvaro Negredo for the central striking role. Cesc Fabregas was included in the midfield, though his manager admitted the Barcelona man has a minor injury which is expected to keep him out for 10 days.

Italy are confident that both Ricardo Montolivio and Giorgio Chiellini are winning their respective fitness battles ahead of the opener against Spain on Sunday June 10. The duo featured eight and 10 times respectively over their nation’s qualifying campaign but are both battling to overcome thigh strains – Italian medical staff revealed:

The test results showed improvements for both, even if obviously they are not 100% yet and it’ll take a few more days to see further changes.

Greece boss Fernando Santos received some positive news over Vassilis Torossidis yesterday. The right-back opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw with Slovenia before limping off after just 23 minutes due to pain in his right knee but scans have revealed no damage has been sustained.

Slaven Bilic has admitted he has a couple of injury concerns ahead of naming Croatia’s final 23 man squad on Tuesday. Centre-half Josip Simunic is being rested for a couple of days but is expected to be fit in a couple of days, though the prognosis on Dejan Lovren is “more complex”, according to his manager.

Holland boss Bert Van Marwijk looks to have problems in the heart of his defence. Centre-half Joris Mathijsen was subbed off with a hamstring problem after just 17 minutes of the home defeat by Bulgaria on Saturday and could now miss his side’s opener against Denmark, with the Dutch boss saying:

The first diagnosis is that they think it is not torn. So it could be a strain. Normally that means a recovery period of 10-15 days. We will probably know more in the next week.

the russia, Czech, poland greece group is where your bargains lie. Holland and Germany are were your expensive players for gwk 1 should lie and Italy and Spain should be invested in for gwk2.

          Yep...that is the best advice

Greece or Polish goalie first day could be good...maybe Given for later in the gameweek
Captains could go something like this
          Lewandowski
          Schneider/Ozil/Robben/Muller
          Croatian or Spanish player
          Nasri or Ibram

Italian, Russian, French defence all fairly tight. Maybe English?

German attacking cover is a must, one or two of Ozil/Muller/Klose/Podolski.

If you want Spanish attack I'd say Alonso or Llorente are the best options.

Mandzukic and Dzagoev are mid priced OOP midfield options.

There are a few 4.0 starters, not many, make sure you have a squad of 15 that are all first choice.

Greek keeper will be 4.0, not sure which one it'll be, couple of 4.0 options in the Swedish defence (M/J Olsson)

And check out this: (Not my work, or entirely accurate, mostly though)

After largely ignoring Chelsea for most of last season, next season it looks like I'm spoilt for choice

    http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport/football/chelsea-close-in-on-eden-hazard-and-hulk-7793476.html

This line in particular appealed ...While Fernando Torres has been told he will lead the line next season, Hulk is being ear-marked to play on the right-hand side or as a second striker.

    Would that make it

    ........Torres.........
    Mata....Hazard...Hulk

    ...up front...in a word....wowzers!

the only thing that could scupper it is if Torres fails again, but Abromovich orders the new manager to play him...that could mean lots of amazing play ending in disappointment.

Sir Alex loves his 442 though.

And I can't see him signing Walker, maybe covert Smalling into a permanent RB?

Those 3 additions are looking like a £70m budget - £40m Modric, £20m Kagawa, £10m Walker. Will the owners offer a budget that big?

He has to sign a CAM, and Kagawa looks perfect, but I can see 4-4-2 with no Modric, and Rooney and Wellbz up front.

United have more chemistry than City. United rely on the way they play, rather than individual talent which is far more sustainable for an entire season. When individuals don't perform they always have their pass ethic and style.

I don't think Spain will win it this year I just have that feeling. I don't think the dutch will be that good defensively , the Germans on the other hand are up to their usual antics I mean c'mon like conceding
5 to the Swiss in the pre's - now that's what I call leading you into a false sense of security, they probably won't concede through the whole tournament now !
I suppose I'm calling Germany But if either France or England get going they could cause problems.

He wasn't that far off RVP's goal tally. And considering he was't even playing striker for a large part of the season, and rarely play played as a LONE striker in a purely attack focused team. Rooney is a better all rounded player in my opinion. He's underrated.

If we're comparing him to RVP, then you gotta also remember that RVP played in an underperforming Arsenal team and pretty much carried them all by himself. Rooney played for a team that barely lost out on the title and was surrounded by far better players than RVP was.

imo RVP is ahead of Rooney all round, but I can see why someone would argue in favour of Rooney.

I don't like that when picking these things you have to play 4-4-2. It's not realistic when picking the best team in the world - nearly all of them play some variant of 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 now.

Evra was the 2nd highest owned defender in the game too. Can't really argue with the decision, he's been poor for a while and yesterday must've been the final straw.

Strinic will play at LB for sure cause Pranjic said that he wanna play in MF and we dosn't have replacemant for LB since Bilic didnt even call Manuel Pamic in squad

I think one of Benzema, Nasri or Ribery is going to embarrass England's defence. They may think they are going to play like Chelsea and possibly have three of their defenders, but its the ones in the middle who are likely to let them down. Cannot see a clean sheet for England in this game. I predict a Nasri goal myself.

Although if I do wildcard in the second week then will possibly look into getting a French attacker. If all else fails, I'd be perfectly happy to captain Hart/Cahill against Sweden and Ukraine.

best to wildcard in gwk 2 that way you can find out which of the plum spanish and italian attackers to get.

I like Mvila pic...the def mids could score well and he is likely to win a lot of balls from England's midfielders. I've gone for Alonso for that reason, but may switch to Mvila.

Hart seems a little luxurious though...maybe worth downgrading, esecially as Szecz has a good chance of a cleanie. I've gone for given as my second choice gk.

            Ah, penalties.. Interesting.

Not sure about Szczesny/Given. Given's only real clean sheet opportunity comes in the first week, when Szczesny also has his easiest fixture of the group stages.

which makes it a fairly good combo if wildcarding after the first week

people keep talking about recovered balls but is it really going to generate any points? 1pt for every 5 isn't going to add up fast

Too much money in defence. Not enough on captain's choices, imo.

      Peruse this, perhaps?

Agree....if all your captains fail for the first few days who will you captain for a last ditch attempt at glory? Cahill? Mvilla? I can see some points but none of them scream mega haul...Nasri on the other hand, or Ibra or even a Ukranian attacker could be a good option.

Abate probably won't start and RVP is not nailed on.
Maybe RVP->Robben and then upgrade Abate to Barzagli, and Sivok to Kadlec.

Have Ozil and Sneijder and have just swapped Robben out for Muller....is that a crazy or shrewd move?

Shrewd, imo. However, I am just having Ozil.

sky sports fantasy team- how does that sound?

    Scezney
    Piszczek, Alba, Mathijsen, Kadlec
    Srna, Robben, Silva
    Ronaldo, Huntelaar, Lewandowski

1 captain change per day, so on the first day you can have 2 captains, going with Lewandowski (2 poland defenders also) but is it worth bringing in anyone from the russia/czech match to captain, current plan is to only have kadlec in that match and just captain him, even though he's a defender

unless theres anyone worth getting in for that game? Who is likely to win that one/best attacking option?

    Thanks
