Zlatan Ibrahimovic gets amongst the goals but itโ€™s Andrei Shevchenko who steals the headlines by bagging a brace as Ukraine see off Sweden. England and France play out a stalemate earlier in the day, with Man City pair Joleon Lescott and Samir Nasri both finding the net as Laurent Blancโ€™s side extend their unbeaten run to 22 games:

England 1 France 1
Roy Hodgson saw his side concede for the first time since taking charge but, despite Franceโ€™s domination, managed to scrape thanks to a resilient defensive display. Joleon Lescott will no doubt be on plenty Fantasy radars after his opener against Laurent Blancโ€™s side โ€“ priced at 5.5 in the McDonaldโ€™s game, he offers the cheapest route into Englandโ€™s backline ahead of the clashes with Sweden and Ukraine.

Hodgsonโ€™s decision to opt for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left of midfield instead of Stewart Downing will also have Fantasy managers on alert. Priced at 6.0 in the McDonaldโ€™s game and with just 2.8% ownership, the Arsenal youngster is an intriguing proposition but itโ€™s perhaps debatable whether he will keep his starting role when Wayne Rooneyโ€™s suspension finishes ahead of Matchday 3. Thereโ€™s every chance Rooney could be partnered by Danny Welbeck up front for the game against Ukraine, with Ashley Young possibly moving out to the left at Oxlade-Chamberlainโ€™s expense. Englandโ€™s midfield work-rate helped Steven Gerrard, James Milner and Scott Parker all pick up an extra point apiece due to the recovered balls rule, with the Liverpool skipperโ€™s assist for Lescottโ€™s goal helping him to a six point return.

Laurent Blancโ€™s starting XI was as expected. Mathieu Debuchy got the nod at right-back, while Alou Diarra started in the defensive central midfield role due to Yann Mโ€™Vilaโ€™s recent injury. The latter was fit enough to be handed a role on the bench, however, suggesting he may well come into contention for Fridayโ€™s showdown with Ukraine.

Elsewhere, Samir Nasri was the standout Fantasy performer in Blancโ€™s front three. Coming in at 8.5 in the McDonaldโ€™s game, the City man is 1.0 cheaper than both Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery and has just 6.8% ownership โ€“ his goal just before half-time helped him to an eight point haul, while Ribery returned five points for providing the assist. Nasri also created eight goalscoring opportunities for his team mates โ€“ more than any French player โ€“ while Benzema managed six attempts on goal; encouraging for his Fantasy owners ahead of the upcoming couple of matches.

Ukraine 2 Sweden 1
The later game followed the script of the previous three days. All four of the 7.45pm kick-offs in Matchday 1 resulted in victories, whereas three of the four early matches produced draws, with teams a little more tentative in the group openers. Oleg Blokhinโ€™s only surprise was the selection of Andrei Shevchenko up front โ€“ the former Milan man had started the last three friendlies on the bench and was hampered with injuries earlier in the year. Shevchenko vindicated his managerโ€™s decision by inspiring the co-hostsโ€™ comeback and grabbing both his sideโ€™s goals โ€“ priced at 7.0 and with a mere 2.2% ownership he proved an inspired Matchday 1 choice, with a 10 point return showing we should never write him off.

Site favourites Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka also played their part, providing an assist apiece. The latter also looked a lively goal threat and managed five attempts at goal; priced at 5.5 compared to Yarmolenkoโ€™s 7.0, heโ€™s a decent mid-price alternative for those Fantasy managers reluctant to splash the cash and, with 0.9% ownership, he also has a share of set-piece duties in the bag.

Erik Hamren picked Andreas Granqvist ahead of Jonas Olsson in the heart of Sweden’s defence, with Martin Olsson slotting in at left-back. Both the latter and Granqvist come in at 4.0 in the McDonaldโ€™s game but with a single clean sheet in their last nine, the Swedes will hardly inspire confidence in Fantasy managers ahead of the remaining two games.

Rasmus Elm was handed a slot in central midfield, while Ola Toivonen โ€“ who had played up front in the recent friendly win over Serbia โ€“ moved to the left flank after Markus Rosenberg recovered from injury to lead the line. Kim Kallstrom rewarded his 2.7% owners by providing the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovicโ€™s opener and the Milan man can consider himself unlucky to be on the losing side after a strong performance โ€“ he managed four goal attempts and created four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates. With Sweden’s schedule now looking far from favourable, though, 8.0 priced Ibrahimovic’s 24.6% of owners have a tricky decision to make, with many deciding to wield wildcards in order to freshen up their frontlines ahead of the Matchday 2 kick-off later on today.

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Friendly World Cup - Matchday 1 Award

(READ THIS FIRST: THIS IS THE AWARD FOR PLAYERS OF THE FRIENDLY WORLD CUP ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE PEOPLE FROM FFS EURO 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE HAS BEEN A SEPARATE AWARD FOR THAT. THANK YOU.)

What a kick off to the tournament! We have been treated to some decent football and some brave selections that would make Doosra himself proud. While a few didn't quite come off, there were enough successes to highlight the importance of being different. This award, however, is only deserved by the bravest of the brave, the noblest of the noble and, quite possibly, the craziest of the crazy.

I judged the award by the rules posted on the FFS UEFA website (http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html). To recap:

A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy
Honourable Mentions- A couple of decisions which were worthy of note if not the award:

-Wazzagoal, Teddy, Goldsternmr, and Catmac. took a gamble on Danish keeper Anderson and it paid off handsomely with a cleansheet, 6 saves and an 8 point haul
-ILA and JKisthe1's selections of Lescott in the face of an imposing French attack were courageous and also rewarded by his powerful header into the French net

    And now for the winner:

Ladies and gentlemen, please offer your congratulations to JKisthe1. His truly valorous pick of Krohn-Dehli has been the frontrunner for this award since the Dane's shot went through Stekelenberg's legs and into the net on Saturday evening and nothing was able to overtake it, with a couple of JK's other attemps being among the closest.

And now leaving Matchday 1 behind with mostly fond memories, Matchday 2 approaches with plenty of opportunities to make an unforgettable, unique and brave selection that could earn you an Order of Extreme Valour Award.

Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

According to Czech expert Sam Beckwith:

"It is expected that defensive midfielder Tomas Hubschman will start tonight, having been brought on as a substitute against Russia to bolster Jaroslav Plasil's flimsy attempts to shield the back four.

Left-back Michal Kadlec, who, along with Baros and Plasil was given a player rating of just two out of 10 by the daily newspaper Sport for his dismal performance against Russia, is likely to be shifted to central defence, at Roman Hubnik's expense, giving a chance to Viktoria Plzen wingback David Limbersky – a former Tottenham Hotspur loanee – on the left."

Better to play it safe with Gabre Selassie if you're going Czech defence.

Iniesta because 8.5m is lot to pay for Fàbregas who might not start and is very likely to be subbed if he does.

Lindegaard won't play, defence looks weak, midfield is good but extremely overpriced, Di Natale probably wont start.

Not sure if Gomez and Ozil are worth the money again the Dutch. And if they do win they might be rested in the next game!
