Danny Welbeckโ€™s sublime back-heel hands England victory and sends Sweden crashing out of Euro 2012. Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott also pick up the plaudits in the five-goal thriller while, in the storm-delayed earlier kick-off, France see off tournament co-hosts Ukraine 2-0, with Karim Benzema setting up both goals for Les Bleus:

France 2 Ukraine 0
Laurent Blanc made two changes from the side that drew against England for last night’s game, with Jeremy Menez and Gael Clichy replacing Florent Malouda and Patrice Evra respectively. The alteration up front allowed France to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Samir Nasri behind Karim Benzema and Menez on the right. Benzema provided the assists for both goals, with Menez notching the opener โ€“ the latterโ€™s classification as a forward in the McDonaldโ€™s game may cause many Fantasy managers to overlook him, however, despite his 7.4 price tag. Benzema looks the forward of choice but Menez clearly offers a differential option if he can maintain his place in Blancโ€™s starting XI, with a mere 0.2% ownership.

Benzema has three shots and provided a trio of goalscoring chances, though Nasri and Franck Ribery were rather disappointing in the change of system. Both had just a shot apiece, though the Bayern man was the better creator, laying on four opportunities to find the net for his team mates. Alou Diarraโ€™s role in the double pivot looks under threat after Yann Mโ€™Vila returned to action midway through the second half. The latter is a firm favourite of Blancโ€™s and, with Yohan Cabaye grabbing a goal and hitting the post, the Newcastle manโ€™s starting role also looks assured.

The French now need just a point in their final game against Sweden to progress โ€“ indeed, as this handy guide indicates, the only way they can be eliminated is if Ukraine beat England and France lose to the Swedes by a margin that would make their goal difference inferior to that of Roy Hodgsonโ€™s side.

The tournament co-hosts fielded the same starting XI that defeated Sweden 2-1 in their opener on Monday evening. Once again, Yevhen Konoplyanka had more attempts than any team mate โ€“ after producing five shots against the Swedes, he fired three efforts last night, though has failed to muster a single attempt on target. Andriy Voronin was hauled off at half-time, allowing Marko Devic to line up alongside Andriy Shevchenko up front but Ukraineโ€™s failure to find the net meant that France were one of only two sides โ€“ along with Spain โ€“ to return a clean sheet for their Fantasy owners in Matchday Two. Given that they now need to beat England to qualify, yesterdayโ€™s lack of goal power is a real worry for Oleg Blokhin and he may well consider ringing the changes for Tuesdayโ€™s crucial encounter.

England 3 Sweden 2
Roy Hodgson make just one change to the XI that started against France, with Andy Carroll coming in for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The move saw Ashley Young shift out left, with the Liverpool man partnering Danny Welbeck up top โ€“ both forwards grabbed a goal apiece in the 3-2 win and, with Wayne Rooneyโ€™s suspension now served, the England manager has a selection headache ahead of the final group game against Ukraine. Rooney will surely play and, with a mere 1% ownership, looks a strong differential captaincy choice for the showdown, leaving Carroll and Welbeck to likely battle it out for the other slot.

Theo Walcottโ€™s goal and assist contribution from the bench also makes him one to consider and perhaps places question marks against James Milnerโ€™s place on the right flank. Coming in at just 7.9 in the McDonaldโ€™s game, the Arsenal man made a more than persuasive case for his first-team inclusion next time round. Steven Gerrard once again picked up the points โ€“ the Liverpool skipper has now returned an assist in back-to-back games after Carroll nodded home his cross for the opener.

Erik Hamren made three changes from the side that slumped to defeat against Ukraine in the opener. Johan Elmander started in the lone forward role last night, with Markus Rosenberg dropping to the bench, Jonas Olsson came in at centre-half, which allowed Andreas Granqvist to move to right-back and, in midfield, Anders Svensson was given a start in the centre, with Rasmus Elm moving to the left and Ola Toivonen dropping out.

Olof Mellbergโ€™s goal and assist helped the 5.0 priced centre half to a 10 point haul, while Seb Larssonโ€™s owners picked up a five point return after the Sunderland man provided an assist for Mellbergโ€™s goal. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had six efforts against Hodgsonโ€™s side but failed to find the net last night as his side were stunned by a Walcott-inspired comeback. With 22.7% ownership and a game against France up next before he boards the flight home, the Milan man is the most susceptible of Hamrenโ€™s men to a price drop over the next day or so, bearing in mind that knockout stage wildcards are available once the final couple of Group A games kick off at 7.30pm tomorrow.

Joachim Löw's press conference is now underway

    * "I assume that Gomez will play from the start."

    * On the right-back situation, he remains extremely vague: "Of course, Höwedes will always play a role and is worth considering". Conclusion: We won't know until tomorrow, so don't gamble.

    * When asked if he'll play a B-team against Denmark: "I'm not going to rest people in a match that has such a lot depending on it." Conclusion: Sounds convincing, but doesn't mean that he won't rotate in certain positions

    * On Kroos's criticisms about not being picked: "I don't know what he's complaining about, and don't want to put to much emphasis on this."

That's promising actually. Maybe he will play a first team. But Gomez is still too big of a risk for me, and don't fancy any of the wide players except Muller.

Schweinsteiger is probably the best German choice at the moment..

Thought I should repost this from last night, did a look into the starting prospects of Italy's forwards. Seeing a lot of the same arguments from last night over Di Natale, hopefully this will help clear things up...

Hey everyone, know it’s a bit late and this may pass most by, but I’ve been doing some research into Italian starting strikers for this week after the debate I read a bit earlier over Cassano being rested.

Here’s the article for any fellow Italian speakers: http://www.gazzetta.it/Europei/2012/15-06-2012/italia-il-mal-d-attacco-mario-antonio-ora-o-mai-piu-911545324425.shtml

    Basically it confirms that both Cassano and Balotelli will start again, in what’s being described as a “now or never” situation for the two i.e. if they fail on Monday they won’t start again. Some key quotes for you guys as well;

Prandelli on Balotelli: “You’re asking me how long Italy will have to wait for Balotelli to help the national side(after only scoring one goal in 10 games)? Three days.”

On Cassano, La Gazetta notes him as the slightly less confident of the two to start, although it adds that Giovinco appears to be the only one who could be alternated with him and he appears more of an understudy, really. Prandelli also seemed happy with Cassano’s contribution, despite earmarking him as more of an assist player towards the team. Here’s a quote: “For 70 minutes he gave everything he possibly could. He didn’t relax one bit.”

Prandelli on Di Natale: “He’s more effective when he enters a match which is already in progress. If you start him you have to play through him, like what happens at Udinese.”

Just thought I’d contribute a few notes while I’m still awake somehow, good for the translation practice as well ๐Ÿ™‚

For me it will without a doubt be Balotelli and Cassano starting on Monday, barring any injuries.

    Hope this helps a little!

Why would Germany rest players when they can still go out of the competition. It's unlikely but surely too close for comfort to start assuming job done?

FFS Euro Cup 2012 - Group B: Permutations for Qualification

As we head into the crunch period of the tourney, let's take a look at what each team needs to do to qualify into the QFs.

But first, here's what the rule book says:
    1) The top two teams in each group will qualify for the knockout phase
    2) If 2 teams are level on points after the final group match then the h2h record (win/loss) between them will determine
who qualifies for the knockout phase.
    3) If 3 or more teams are tied on the same points after the final group match, the Points Difference (GD) will come into play, as it effectively takes into account all the matches. If the GD is equal, then the team with "higher points scored over the 3 games" goes through.

    1. Denmark: (6 pts) - Isacki & LightKnight
Clear favorites to qualify from this group, you'd have to think Karma has played a role for providing us daily feature articles (Valour Awards) to keep us entertained. A win against Germany and it will seal their position at the top of the group. Even a loss won't stop them from qualifying, unless a) Netherlands are able to win against Portugal, cover the difference in Overall GD of about 93 points in the process AND b) Germany end up with a better overall GD than Denmark (the current difference in GD is about 63 points)

    2. Netherlands: (3 pts) - China Mag & In Like Flynn
The deadly deadzone duo are placed 2nd, only after to beating Germany after a close encounter of 94-91 in Matchday 2. A win against Portugal and a draw/loss for Germany will see them qualify. A win against Portugal, followed by a win for Germany will decide the first two spots by the overall GD (between Denmark, Netherlands & Germany). That should mean Netherlands would be hoping for a Germany loss more than their win. A victory for Netherlands, followed by a loss for Germany will be the ideal scenario for Netherlands to qualify as a runner-up. If Netherlands & Germany are both defeated, the group runner-up spot will be taken by the team with the best overall GD (between Germany, Netherlands & Portugal).

    3. Germany (3 pts) - Jonty & Camzy
The last Scout standing in the Cup and a team of which a lot was expected. It isn't over by any means for Germany, thanks to a decent overall GD due to a very marginal loss against the Dutch. The best case scenario for Germany would be a victory against Denmark, followed by a loss for the Dutch, which would see them top the group. Wins for both Germany & Netherlands will see the top 2 spots decided by overall GD (between Germany, Netherlands & Denmark). A loss for Germany, followed by a loss for Netherlands will decide the 2nd spot by the team with highest overall GD (between Germany, Netherlands & Portugal). A loss for Germany, followed by a win for the Dutch would see the Germans crashing out of the Euro's. Will Camzy's Wildcard & Jonty's jolly good tactics prove to be a saviour for Germany? Time will tell.

    4. Portugal (0 pts) - Billy Ketsu & Gaz Downright
Another deadzone duo, dubbed to be the dark horses of the group. Even if they're placed fourth, they are still in the running to qualify - one cannot discount them yet. They need a win against the Dutch, the Germans to lose vs Denmark AND thereby ending up with a better overall GD than both the giants. Tough but not impossible, you'd think.

This group could go down to the wire, even though the Danish look in the driver's seat for now.

For all our talk of rotation for GW3 if teams had qualified, none of them have, only an idiot would take a risk by not playing his strongest side when in need of a result.

    Hi all! ๐Ÿ™‚
Lacking a starting keeper this matchday with 1 free transfer. What should I do in your opinion?

    A) Chalkias –> Sifakis, CR7 –> Rooney
    B) CR7 –> Van Persie
    C) Keep CR7?

    Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

    thoughts on my wc team?

    Buffon / Tyton
    strinic / selassie / limbersky / debuchy / badstuber
    obraniak / ozil / dzagoev / Konoplyanka / pirlo
    Pavlyuchenko / torres / rooney

thought about swapping torres to ballotelli or cassano then i'd switch pirlo to nasri, gerrard, or young.

waiting to see if pav starts, if he doesnt, i'll probably downgrade ozil to someone and switch pav to cr7 or maybe to whoever the russian striker is.

Ditch Young - he was anonymous in the first game and awful in the second.

But in answer to your question I'd go for B if I had to choose. I've gone for both though. ๐Ÿ™‚
