Chelseaโ€™s Branislav Ivanovic doesn’t immediately spring to mind as someone who suffered a disappointing season last time out and yet, when you examine the numbers, the decline of the Blues defender was perhaps more marked than most.

Having notched four goals and five assists in the 2010/11 campaign, with 13 clean sheets also accrued, Ivanovic was expected to maintain his strong Fantasy returns but instead slipped into obscurity last term, fetching just four shutouts with reduced attacking returns to match. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, that saw a huge 64-point drop from his previous season’s tally.

Ivanovic made 29 league appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit in 2011/12, starting 26 and climbing off the bench three times. Only John Terry and Ashley Cole bettered that in the Bluesโ€™ backline and, crucially, both demanded higher Fantasy fees. In the FPL both Cole and Terry began with initial values of 7.5; this was 0.5 more than Ivanovic, and a trend that was reflected across the various Fantasy games.

That FPL price tag, coupled with the lack of security within a shuffled defensive unit sealed Ivanovicโ€™s fate as a figure banished to a cameo role in our Fantasy thinking. He finished the campaign with less than a 2% ownership in the FPL, with his price dropping to 6.6.

The Prospects

Despite this, Ivanovic is unquestionably a fine defender with possibly his best years in the Premier League ahead of him. If he can cement a starting role in Roberto Di Matteoโ€™s side, he has proven goal threat and creativity to compliment what will hopefully be a more successful campaign for Chelsea in defensive areas.

Ten clean sheets was a woeful domestic return from a side that defended so resolutely in Europe. Di Matteo will surely target major improvements and Fantasy managers will be hoping that a settled back four is part of his strategy.

The present scenario finds Petr Cech and the aforementioned Cole and Terry as the most secure options in a Blues defence which opens the season with a tempting double Gameweek that will inevitably draw investment. While those three heavyweights will doubtless demand high fees, Ivanovic can be found within a pack that includes Gary Cahill and David Luiz – with the threat of rotation hanging more heavily over the latter trio, we can expect them to be priced a little more favourably.

However, with Jose Bosingwa now departed, Ivanovic has the opportunity to make the right-back role his own. Doubtless he will face opposition for the spot, with the Champions League holders reportedly targeting the raiding Brazilian, Maicon from Serie A outfit Inter. While the prospect of the marauding South American will be relished by Chelsea fans and Fantasy managers alike, Ivanovic is a proven Premier League defender of some pedigree and, at present, the right-back role looks to be his to lose.

Given his returns last time out, a price drop to bring Ivanovic in line with Luiz and Cahill would seem on the cards, then. Unlike that pairing, however, the Serb has arguably the greater potential for cementing starts and perhaps stands a chance to mirror the output produced in that eye-catching 2010/11 season once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To be honest, I hope we can sign Adam Johnson. We're pretty weak down the right wing. Don't think we'll need a CAM with Gerrard partnering Lucas now.

Think we'll need to play both Suarez and Carroll. Towards the end of the season, they seemed to have been gelling well together.

Dempsey would be too old for Rodgers' liking and we don't need Sinclair; doesn't defend whatsoever.

That is so not a good thing for United fans. Having a sports franchise publicly traded is a recipe for disaster. Having to constantly answer to the shareholders and have the continuous pressure to deliver an expected return on investment is a horrible mix for a sports franchise!

I can not think of any teams which have done well under this ownership structure.

Unfortunately, this is the end of United's dominance.....i give it 3 years to fall apart. The only thing which will hold the it together is SAF in the short run. Once he retires, it will be over..

It might be their only way out! It must be difficult to find a buyer given the actual value of the team and its current debt load. Mark my words, this is a horrible thing for a storied franchise such as United.

The sad thing is that profit will be the driving force behind every decision. Unfortunately, publicly traded compaines have very short memories and can be extreemly short sighted. The drive for a certain return on equity each year will tremendously affect the decisions that impact the product on the pitch.

Very sad news!!!! The end of an era.

No not mean to sound overly negative but it is the sad truth.

They need the high bottom line and dividend % to maintain their shareprice. For most public Co.s This is used to drive the enormous management and boardroom bonuses. It becomes a vicious circle which cannot be maintained in the long run.

Of course by then the beneficiaries have all buggered off to other companies to do the same again.

Alreet lads. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that no news on toon transfers out is good news. There's been the usual speculation (Krul, Colo, Cabeye, Tiote, Barfa, Ba and Dave are all leaving according to some papers!) ,but there has been nothing concrete. I think there is a 50:50 chance of Ba leaving, but am pretty confident on keeping the others. If we manage to do that, plus add a couple of players then I think we can have another great season. Keep in mind that last year was the first season in England for Santon, Cabeye, Dave, so they should be stronger this year. Also we got less than half a season out of saylor, barfa, marveaux, dave, (tiote only played 24 games) so hopefully we will have better luck with injuries next year.

That could be a major issue. Currently 3 (tiote, ba, dave). Guthrie was our replacement for tiote last year, so we need to get somebody in there. All of this talk of de jong makes me confident that we will be bringing in a new forward so we should have cover up there. I would love it if we can keep ba AND bring in a new forward.

You are probably right. But just think that one week before Dave's scoring streak started, Pardew was complaining that he was having trouble settling in, and couldn't speak a word of english. Imagine how good he can be once he is settled!!

I'm going to have a cheeky tenner on him for top scorer at 25/1. He will have less of a chance due to the fact he might be away for 6 games for the african nations, but that is reflected in the odds. Suarez is 14/1!!!

      Hey China,

Do you know if Dave is as devoted to his religous beliefs like Ba? As i recall Demba Ba fasts for Ramadan making it impossile to be fit for the first month or so of the season.

Squad numbers only came in in '93/'94 since then only 4 have worn 7

          Cantona
          Beckham
          Ronaldo
          Owen
          Valencia soon to join them

Back in the day of proper footie Manager picked a team of 11 and they got numbers 1 - 11 (during this time subs were introduced to he got No12) so plenty that wore 7 also wore other numbers form time to time.

There are others who by chance only ever wore 7 at United - Johhny Berry and Jimmy Delaney.

Some of those remembered as 7's but also wore othe numbers

Bryan Robson, Billy Meredith, Joe Spence, Steve Coppell, Willie Morgan, John Schofield, William Bryant, George Best.

Those names go as far back as about 1900, but many others also wore 7, too many to name.

excatly, all u need is quick feet and quick change of pace, not sprinting speed, to be a world class dribbler.

Nike tested most speedsters in the Prem som years back

Two fastest dribbling with the ball were Agbonlahor and Lennon.

There was also a sixty meters test at Arsenal some years back. Tie between Walcott and Sol Campbell apparently.

My interests are really wide, and I have a penchant for romantic movies, thrillers, mind-fcks etc. Seriously interests varies way too much.
