Robin Van Persie has this evening delivered a telling statement on his official site that confirms that he will not sign a contract extension at the Emirates, placing his immediate future at Arsenal in serious doubt.

While Van Persie’s contract does not expire until next summer, his statement could well make his situation at the club untenable, with the Gunners’ skipper citing differences in opinion on how the club should progress…

“I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days. Out of my huge respect for Mr Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.â€

Arsenal have followed this up with a statement of their own, indicating that they will look to keep their skipper for the final year of his current contract.

“Robin has one year to run on his current contract and we are confident that he will fulfil his commitments to the Club.”

Despite Arsenal’s best intentions, an array of suitors will be circling, with the aim to seal the signature of the Premier League’s most glittering talent before the August 31 transfer deadline.

For Fantasy managers this is, of course, hugely significant news. After an incredible season, the Dutchman is undoubtedly the red hot property in Fantasy terms but, with the various games preparing to open their doors, we now face weeks of uncertainty surrounding the future of the season’s potential star asset.

Manchester City will, of course, be touted as his likely destination and such a move would have huge repercussions in Fantasy terms, not just on Van Persie’s potential but also that of the likes of Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez.

There’s little doubt then that this evening’s news is set to create a huge question mark over our pre-season tinkering and it seems likely that Van Persie is now to be written off as an initial signing, at least until we know more on the outcome of what could be a lengthy transfer saga. With Aguero also potentially affected by City’s pursuit of Van Persie, suddenly our pre-season thinking is turned on its head.

Further meetings with Arsenal’s backroom are promised, with Van Persie set to make statements in the near future. Fantasy managers will wait on those updates with keen anticipation.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Sounds like Eljero Elia is close to signing for Fulham.

Looks like a good signing, he failed to fit in the Juve system so jumped ship.

        Krasic is still avaliable....

Fulham's lack of width last season was surprising. Very little creativity from out wide despite Duff's presence.

Duff doesn't have the pace he used to have which hinders him, Ruiz was staggeringly under-used.

Also Dempsey, when used on the left, always came inside so basically they were relying Riise to get forward on that side.

actually that is a good point, his arrival could make Clint even more valuable this year if he has some crosses to get on the end of.

as a neutral i'm gutted to hear rvp is leaving. just praying to god that he won't go to city! city have enough strikers as it is, would be a fantasy nightmare and in terms of the epl i don't wanna see him go there either.

if he stays in england i'd love to see him go to chelsea tbh. rvp + hulk + hazard + mata would be such a fun front 4 to watch!!! and then torres could be a sub or could get sent to arsenal as part of a swap + cash deal

that or see him go to spurs but can't see that happening....

if he leaves the country I'd like to see him go to juve personally. don't think that we need him nor will he get the playing time he deserves and surely don't want him going to madrid

We had spells where they looked promising. But most of the time, they'd win the ball back and after two passes we'd give it away - the main culprits were Young and Milner but they were all as bad as each other.

None of the South American teams abilities are truly represented by their rankings as half of their players don't travel back for the games because they play in Europe and the ones who do suffer from the travelling anyway.

rule number 4, wait to make your transfers but don't wait til the last minute. i 1) missed the deadline for the euros by about 5 seconds and 2) overslept and didn't make any transfers for that super critical dgw at the end of last season

I often wonder at the delusions that some football fans suffer from. Arsenal should finish in the top four but it'll be tough for them, as it has been fairly frequently in recent years.

Has it really? Arsenal has finished in the top four for the past 14 seasons. Van Persie was out injured for many of those seasons. People carry on as if RVP is the messiah. He's a good striker and I loved him, but he is not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy.

I admit that RvP isn't the only good player for Arsenal. Podolski & Giroud should certainly make up for his departure on the goal front. Wenger is very good at filling the gaps from departing members of his team, a lot of people wrote Arsenal off with the loss of Nasri & Fabregas but they still managed to finish 3rd this season and Arteta turned out to be almost (if not equally) as important as RvP.

But there is little doubt that other teams are better player for player and more consistent in terms of performance. United will stronger this season, as will City & Chelsea, it's hard to see Arsenal not struggling to finish above them.

Being better player for player reputation wise. Players develop their reputations at Arsenal. It doesn't help that they keep getting sold to Citeh as soon as they've proven themselves at Arsenal.

However, in Podolski, we have a player already at the height of his powers. If he hits the ground running, fans may soon forget Captain Vantastic. It will also be healthier to share the goals around more.

Arsenal still has Song, Jack, Diaby, Verminator, Ox, Walcott, Rosicky.

It's not quite yet time to commit seppuku.

While it's a side of a certain quality it is not a side that can match the quality of those who will be truly competing for the Premier League this season. It simply does not have the spending power or the wage structure to accomplish this, which in no way takes away from Arsenal's achievement (they're the only semi-successful team in the premier league to actually run at a profit) but they are incredibly unlikely to win much of anything.

Sure. That's if the players who've left in the last few years had stayed too. Must be hard for Arsenal fans to look at the team they could have if they'd hung onto the likes of Fab, Clichy, Nasri, RVP. Ouch.

Perhaps you guys know this, but as the FIFA rankings were in the conversation a bit back, I went looking for the USA's (36th). I also found the calculation formula for the ranks ... if anyone's interested it can be found here:

    http://www.fifa.com/worldranking/procedureandschedule/menprocedure/index.html

    ... Basically:

"A team’s total number of points over a four-year period is determined by adding:

    · the average number of points gained from matches during the past 12 months;
    and

    · the average number of points gained from matches older than 12 months (depreciates yearly).

Calculation of points for a single match

The number of points that can be won in a match depends on the following factors:

    • Was the match won or drawn? (M)

    • How important was the match (ranging from a friendly match to a FIFA World Cup™ match)? (I)

    • How strong was the opposing team in terms of ranking position and the confederation to which they belong? (T and C)

These factors are brought together in the following formula to ascertain the total number of points (P).

    P = M x I x T x C"

In the four year period that the ranks are based on, England beat Italy 3 out of 4 years, and the one year Italy *did* win, was by one point (285 v. 284 for the year).

So, by that formula, it makes sense that England is ranked higher.

England have a great win rate and we beat Spain and drew with the Netherlands in the past year so 4th in the world is understandable.

The USA beating Italy (for the first time in 78 years and on a Dempsey goal) certainly didn't hurt England.

I presume there's a feeling of a lack of ambition with regards to the wage and transfer spending. Certainly, there's a presumption that this is also at the centre of why RVP is leaving, given his statement.

Well it's bad business to let players run into their last year of their contract when they know they can get a big pay day.
I don't think the fans deserve it (although seeing the responses on twitter wishing death, mutilation and cancer on RVP perhaps they do) but the owners and manager do.

Interesting times ahead for us. I still think we'll get top 4 though. A lot of decisions need to be made, i'd have a bit of a squad upheaval. Theo is unlikely to sign a new contract now, i think we should cash in while Chelsea are interested.

You definitely need M'vila, as he's a proper DM, and more mobile/dynamic than what you have atm. Diaby can't be relied upon. I don't think the protection that Song/Arteta offer for your defence is good enough either. Is Coquelin ready to challenge for a starting place next season?

Like i said, i wouId be tempted to sell Walcott and buy him as a replacement. I genuinely think he is already better then Walcott anyway. Theo is entering the last year of his contract next season and it is unlikely the board will offer him the terms he will want. I'd cash in while Chelsea want him.

I think Coquelin has a massive future. If we missed out on M'Vila i wouldn't be too disappointed becasue we have this guy, that is how highly i rate him. I would get M'Vila becasue Songs contract is also running down and with the way things are going, he could be tempted to leave soon aswell.

To be honest, I haven't been too impressed either, i've just put him in there becasue we are heavily linked with him. Soo many French pundits have praised him in the past so he must have something about him. I would love to see Coquelin get more minutes though.

I've seen a good bit of M'Vila for club and country. He isn't mature as a player yet, his attitude can be poor when he isn't the focal point of the team, as we saw with France when he wasn't seeing enough of the ball. He also tries to rush things at the moment, patience will come with maturity. He can often disapper from games when this is the case.

That said, he has fantastic ability, is well capable of playing the holding midfielder role he plays for France and the box to box role he played for Rennes. Has a good passing range, is composed on the ball, reads the game well and knows how to tackle.

Personally think he needs another year, would love him at United as a Carrick replacement.

Should add he can still be a bit rash in the tackle as he doesn't seem to know when to commit when the opposing player has full control, should come with experience though, grand when the opposition has over run it.

Sounds promising. Everytime i've seen him i've been impressed with his composure and passing. I've been disappointed with his lack of breaking up play ad pressing the ball, at times he seemed a bit lazy. I haven't seen much of him though.

The club shows no ambition, thats why he left....and its heartbreaking.....signing a French striker who couldn't make the national team? Podolski is a good signing but good luck making up for all of RVP's goals last year....w/o RVP we would have been just above relegation last season. The board is content with staying in the green, making money, and being mediocre. RVP is not just going for money....a player wants to WIN....and Arsenal is not showing that in return.

Oh and YIPEE! Chamak's agent said he wants to stay and fight for his spot now...what a great day for arsenal club.

Get some perspective. RVP is getting on for 30, he'll never have a season like that again. When United lost Ronaldo, other players stepped up to the plate.

Arsenal will still be top 4 and who knows, it might benefit them to have less focus on one player.

sorry folks. Had that song stuck in my head all day as work seems to play it about 3 times an hour. Just had to type a line in to see if anyone bit.

I only started posting at the start of the Euro's but used the site during last season's FPL for handy tips, never bothered scrolling down. Have I met all the regular posters yet or have I not even met half of them?

It can be done pretty easily but our issue is tampering with code which already gets a pretty big hit from traffic. We used to have it back in the day of 100 comments an article.

I will raise it with Ed tho...there's likely a client side solution that could work.

Goal-line tech will kill football big time. Hope it don't go ahead.

I disagree F'head. Times change, rules change and we should all move ahead (no pun intended). The days of a few well intentioned men on the pitch and lines should be way behind us. Rugby/Cricket/Athletics and any other serious sport has shown the way.

Each to their own. But really Vets, football is so entertaining the way it is.

It will always be entertaining but it has to move with the times to make it more fair and to be seen as being fair. Right now, that is not happening. Why allow the ambiguity when it can be negated?

It would kill the natural nature of time duration during a game imo.

Nah... even now this depends on the ref. Some let it flow, some don't. With the tech we have nowadays, goal line decisions and even more would not interrupt the flow. In fact, it would probably do a lot less than xyz star writhing on the floor because he got kissed on the arse.
