Paul Lambert’s first foray into the transfer market as manager of Aston Villa saw the midlands outfit snap up Karim El Ahmadi from Feyenoord last week. The 27-year-old arrives on a three-year contract for around £2.5m and will help address the gap left in the Villa midfield after club skipper Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with leukaemia in the latter part of last season:

With his central midfield options largely limited, Lambert’s move to boost the ranks is an obvious one. The new Villa boss prioritised the signing of El Ahmadi shortly after arriving at Villa Park and expects the defensive midfielder to make a substantial impact in the Premier League, as he looks to improve on the club’s 16th place finish under the previous boss, Alex McLeish.

Karim is a player who I feel could definitely improve our squad. He has experience of big club football and also at international level. He can pass the ball well and he could be an important player for us in central midfield.

The Statistics

El Ahmadi was snapped up by Dutch club Twente as a youngster and progressed through the youth academy before being handed a professional contract. His debut came as a 19-year-old in the 2003-04 season and over his five years at the club, he showed plenty versatility by playing on the right of midfield and in defence, in addition to featuring through the centre. In total, he made 89 league appearances for Twente, scoring three times and providing six assists.

His displays as a combative defensive midfielder caught the eye of Feyenoord and, in April 2008, El Ahmadi signed a five-year deal to join the Eredivisie club the following season. After a couple of campaigns as a regular, El Ahmadi was loaned out to Al-Ahli FC in the United Arab Emirates before returning in time to produce his most successful season at the club last time out. Under the guidance of Ronald Koeman, El Ahmadi returned two goals and five assists as the club finished second in the Dutch top-flight and clinched a Champions League slot for the season ahead. His time at Feyenoord produced four goals and seven assist from 94 games, while El Ahmadi has also picked up experience on the international stage, turning out for Morocco on 17 occasions and finding the net once.

The Prospects

While the above-mentioned stats hardly look the most enticing, El Ahmadi’s arrival could help provide a better balance at the back for Villa in the season ahead. As manager of Norwich in the previous campaign, Lambert saw his side concede in all 19 of their away games, with just three clean sheets produced at Carrow Road; clearly, a more combative player who is willing to sit in front of the back-four and break up the opposition’s play will be vital, given Lambert’s attacking ethos.

A low to mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games can be expected, with a cost of around 5.0 – 5.5 looking likely in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game but he could struggle for investment, given his limited attacking returns – more attacking options such as Charles N’Zogbia or even Stephen Ireland will hold greater appeal in Lambert’s midfield from a FPL perspective.

Indeed, it seems likely that El Ahmadi’s tackles and passes may be more suitable for the new bonus rule in the Sky game; coming in at just 4.7, the Moroccan, who was nicknamed “The Governor” in Holland due to his influence in the middle of the park, should prove better value there. Commenting on the style of play the Villa fans can expect, he revealed:

As a player, I always want to have the ball and that is my main quality. I always want the ball and to dictate the game. That’s what I did at Feyenoord and hopefully I can show the fans, the club and the manager my quality.

Certainly, analysis of their opening schedule suggests Villa have the potential to produce over the early stages. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom look prosperous, while trips to West Ham and Southampton are also on the agenda by Gameweek 5, handing El Ahmadi the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running in his new surroundings.

Suarez is nailed on for me this year. Could be a great differential and there's no way he can be so w̶a̶s̶t̶e̶f̶u̶l̶ unlucky with his finishing again. I also expect Liverpool to be a much better team this year. 😎

He`s going to be beast this season. Playing a brand of football better suited for him, with more passes and more involvement and more opportunities. Atleast better ones. He bangs them in for Uruguay, and they play a similar type of football. Im expecting 20+ from him this year, scouse-glasses off, honest.

Apparently Newcastle is interested in Bojan-Santon swap. Don't think it's a good move. With Ba and Cisse, they don't need another striker and there aren't many players who can replace Santon at the LB spot.

Santon havent been that good for Newcastle, and my guess is theyre probably looking around for someone else. Besides, Taylor was first choice before injury. Even though they have Ba and Cissè, they dont really have anybody else (Løvenkrands doesnt count), and Bojan is young and could bring them something different than the other two.

After Ba and Cisse, it's Ameobi. Lovenkrands has been released and has signed for Birmingham I believe. Presumably Ranger is theoretically an option but I expect us to cut our losses there sooner rather than later. Bojan is not a Newcastle type player though imo.

Not a chance Santon will be allowed to leave - he's nailed on first choice left back, anyone thinking Ryan Taylor is ahead of him in the pecking order is deluding themselves based on last year's fantasy returns, not on actual football.

Also, Bojan doesn't exactly fit the template for the kind of transfer targets we have these days.

This story looks utterly ridiculous - source?

Obviously, but its going to take time for this project to gain some legs. Hoping for a fun first season with progress, maybe get a cup win again or something and edge closer to 4th. Depends a bit on signings obv. Gerrard/Suarez will be vital, but im thinking that Rodgers doesnt want to be as dependant on individual players as previous managers we`ve had.

Very logical. I can see LFC climbing up a couple rungs on the ladder to 5th-6th this season. And if they let Rogers have a 2nd season and keep most of the main players then push for 4th the following season.

This season should be even tighter (if possible) than last year. United look strengthened, City will no doubt get 3-4 class players in, Arsenal could be more dynamic with RVP leaving even though he was BPL`s best striker last term. Chelsea look stronger even after losing their best striker, but i assume they`ll find some replacement, as i dont think Lukaku is ready yet. I also think Spurs have a much better suited squad for AVB`s brand of football and will do well, their signings have been stellar. Curious about Rodgers as a Liverpool-fan myself, but i dont see us doing the business this quickly. Suppose we`ll have to fight it out for 4th, but i see us falling short again.

      City

      Chelsea

Noticed the VDV discussion on the last page and wanted to chip in. Mostly because I noticed no one predicted VDV starting on the right wing. But on both Porto and Chelsea that AVB has managed there has been a left footer with a good shot on the right. We could maybe see a lot of switching of wings between Lennon and Bale. But VDV is class and Lennon would make a better impact sub with his speed, I know VDV has not liked playing there. But in the AVB system the wide 2 do a bit less defending and I think he could be just fine.

He`s slow, cant get passed his man, has no work ethic and no positional awareness. Playing as a left-footed right-winger demands that you`re wide - often. VDV would never stand idly on the chalk, waiting for something to happen.

Do you remember Vdv playing out wide last season? He had very little impact. He has more quality than lennon but out wide lennon is a much, much better player as a starter and a sub

But for Avb the wing players are a tad different. Drift inside a lot more and are asked to score. Not to put in crosses and defend all the time like in the normal english 4-4-2

very good. Terry to luiz (will get banned for start of season) and upgrade parker to song/wilshere/arteta. Song preferably as will get more bonus. Parker will get rotated with Sandro under AVB

he is a liverpool striker so will be around 7-7.5. Not sure about him scoring regularly yet tho, or even playing every game. He is really only just starting out his career in terms of games played

Barca is offering Affelay to Arsenal and Inter. According to reports an offer of around €6 million could be enough as they are looking to cash in on Javi Martinez.
A bargain for whicever team gets him.

Bargain? Only if you need to employ more medical staff. Injury-prone, overrated player. Perfect fit for Inter. Are they really going for Martinez? Such a sick squad they`ll have - again.
