Sam Allardyce continued his summer of first-team restructuring on Wednesday with the acquisition of Modibo Maiga from Ligue 1 side FC Sochaux. The highly-rated 24-year-old arrives on a four-year deal thought to be in the region of £4.7m and is the fifth player to make his way to Upton Park since the club’s promotion, following the transfers of Jussi Jaaskelainen, George McCartney, Stephen Henderson and Mohamed Diame:

The Mali international has already received Premier League interest this year – he failed a medical last January at Newcastle, with the Magpies turning instead to Papiss Cisse to boost their strikeforce. A versatile player, he is primarily a centre forward but can also play on the wing; at 6 foot 1, though, Big Sam is likely to play him through the middle as he goes about addressing his options up front. The new boy made all the right noises upon his arrival earlier in the week, going on to say:

I am really happy and excited about joining West Ham United. I know West Ham are a big club in England and I’m really looking forward to representing them. They have huge tradition and it is like joining part of a family and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here. I know some of the big names that have played for the club in the past and I am proud to be part of a new team back in the Premier League.

The Statistics

Maiga first start in professional football came in his native country for Stade Malien at the age of 15. He featured just three times there before making his way to Morocco to turn out for Raja Casablanca where, despite failing to score in 22 appearances over the course of a couple of seasons, he won the Arab Champions League and Moroccan League. As a 20-year-old, he was snapped up by French side Le Mans and flourished in a team that also featured the likes of Gervinho and Stephane Sessegnon – Maiga returned 15 goals and six assists over 88 appearances prior to signing for FS Sochaux in time for the 2010/11 campaign.

His first season at Sochaux was a spectacular success, with 15 goals and three assists from 36 appearances, though Maiga suffered in comparison last term. The club’s refusal to allow him to join Newcastle in August 2011 saw him go on strike in order to force a move through – eventually returning to the first-team, he found the net nine times and produced a pair of assists from 23 league matches as his side stuttered to a 14th place finish. Maiga has represented his country on 31 occasions and notched five times – no doubt we’ll be subjected to plenty of “the next Freddy Kanoute” headlines over his time at Upton Park.

The Prospects

A powerful striker, Maiga will also bring plenty pace to the Hammers’ up front options next season. His dynamic game is suited to the speed of the Premier League and will perhaps stand him in good stead in terms of game time next term, providing he can keep his temperament in check. Allardyce still seems undecided on Carlton Cole – 12 of the forward’s 43 appearances last term came from the bench and while Ricardo Vaz Te impressed with 12 goals in 18 appearances upon his January arrival from Barnsley, question marks remain over his ability to produce in the Premier League.

At present, plenty speculation surrounds the West Ham front line. Moves for Andy Carroll and Dimitar Berbatov have been mooted and, while neither may come to fruition, the intent is clear – Big Sam is looking to freshen things up in the forward positions. Looking at the stats, Maiga is clearly best utilised as part of a front two – those 15 goals in 36 appearances in 2010/11 saw him partnered up front in a 4-3-1-2 but Sochaux’s move to 4-2-3-1 last term clearly dented his potential.

If he can nail down a regular role under Allardyce, Maiga could earn interest as a cut-price option in our Fantasy squads. Similar to Cole and Vaz Te, he comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) though intriguingly, the Sky Sports game has priced him as the cheapest of the trio at just 6.1 – many are likely to hold fire at the moment, however, with the Hammers certain to continue their summer spending.

Certainly, the opening set of fixtures have been kind to West Ham. Over the first five Gameweeks, Allardyce’s men play host to (AVL, FUL, SUN) and with trips to Swansea and Norwich also on the agenda, confidence in their budget and mid-price Fantasy assets will be relatively high. In terms of ownership, looking at the Sky Sports game, Maiga is the least popular of the Hammers forwards so far – while he’s likely to sneak under the radar of many, then, the new boy may well be quick out the blocks.

what 4.0 keeper has the best chance to become a starter at some point. Im thinking Tremmel in case vorm looks world class and got sold in January. do any of the 4.0s from RDG or SOU have any shot at challenging the #1's?

im thinking of just doing de gea/4.0 keeper and just rolling with de gea. i know he could miss a rare PL game or two but i dont care. i hate keepers.

Please tear this team to shreds with any criticism:
    RMT

    Begovic (Jaask)
    Cole - Lescott - Hughes (Cuellar/Wilson)
Hazard - Kagawa - Pienaar - Noble (Maloney)
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

Have 2.5 left over to upgrade Torres to Rooney

Do Begovic and Jaask rotate all that well? I mean, they rotate perfectly in terms of home and away games, but there are many weeks where one has a tough home game and the other has an easy away game, in which case it's quite tricky to choose which one to play.

Yeah, agree they're not the perfect rotation but I think they're the best for 9.0

Unless pienaar moves I wouldnt put him in due to lack of game time
Sorenson was picked ahead of Begovic at the latter of the season so for me thats a risky pick

Graham's fixture is just too good to refuse. I think he should do well and is a bargain at 6.0

Pienaar's selection is on the basis that he moves to Everton which all but confirmed.

I'm backing Begovic to be the no 1 keeper.

Acqua....i posted my thoughts on this very point a few nights ago.....still racking my brain over it.

Pog has over 25% ownership because he is cheap and DGW. I will see serious tranfers out over GW2 - 3 and will problably drop to 4.7-4.6. imo....if you are planning on having 3 CHE and 2 RDG player be prepared to take 2 hits for GW3.

I am leaning towards Petric as my cheap striker. Might get Pog after GW3 as he will be even better value.

out of the strikers who played over 500 minutes last season, tevez had the best 'chances per minute' and the fourth best 'chances created per minute' stat, although interestingly, in the latter two of the guys above him were also at city (balotelli and dzeko)

    RMT with a difference
I have 1m spare, where should I use it?

    Green. DDG
    Lescott. Clichy. Hangeland. McCartney. Mariappa
    Hazard. Bale. Taraabt. Pienaar. Britton
    Torres. Aguero. Pog

    Thinking either upgrade
    A. Mac ( to Shawcross or STaylor)
    B. Clichy to Vidic
    C. Pienaar to someone else?!

      B. shawcross and s. taylor have crappy fixtures, clichy is a rotation worry, and pienaar will be great after gw1 methinks. can't see everton starting so slow with him and the jelly.

not sure about britton....prefer guthrie, m'self, especially for the DGW. still not sure exactly how nailed down mariappa is, either...

Good thinking, I have 1.5 spare now so
The other option is to find 0.5 somewhere and turn Torres into Roo after GW1

Best at 9.0? Tough to say but i'd go with antonio or even cheaper with kagawa.

Nolan over Noble if you can afford the extra 1.0 obviously( most of us can't), but everyone is picking Noble as a bench fodder/rotation mid.

    de gea/ 4.0
    cole, lescott, hangeland, mccartney, cuellar
    hazard, kagawa, bale, taarabt, noble
    tevez, torres, graham

cole >> vert in gw 2 due to better fixtures + goal threat
hangeland >> coloccini once toons fixtures get better
cuellar >> wilson if cuellar doesnt get game time.

of course all of this is subject to tevez playing.

McCleish isnt at Villa anymore, they have Lambert who is a good attacking manager so many of us see Bent to score lots of goals this season. Of course I will only pick Adebayor if he goes to Spurs and there aint none funny about that... must be easily amused

How can a transfer be easily assumed? Ade is linked out of the country. Lambert does not guarantee success for Bent. And going without Aguero GW1 is pretty much fantasy suicide.

I would only consider Bent due to the fact he's the only person who can score for Villa in open play. Other than that, they lack creativity, therefore I'd rather go for Graham.

    Afternoon all

My my, that Compare Tool is a real black hole, isn't it. Just sat down to have a little tinker and two hours disappeared. Looks like I'm going to get even less work done this season........but what about that Grant Holt, eh? Shame his fixtures aren't better.
Nice to see a few of the Dead Zone regulars drifting back.

time to get back to my roots, a bit of the ol ultra-violence.

FWFC Starting XI: de Gea; Cole, Williams, Hangeland; Noble, Kagawa, Sigurdsson, Lampard; Graham, Torres, Aguero

        Substitutes: McCarthy, Larsson, Demel, Fonte

        BRILLIANT!

Expecting big things of your boys this year FW, big things. 5-3 at the Lane and 4-4 away - I may well invest in two of your attackers.

Crazy number of people around that score Acqua - one point equalled around 250 places in the rankings.

TBH Acqua, cba until about 2 days before deadline. Too much uncertainty in the air.

Dilatory fiddling at the moment for me. So much is still unclear it seems a bit pointless, tbh. I definitely won't be waiting until 2 days before the deadline to make my team though, not after what happened last year.

Hey guys, been tinkering since open and I think I've got a solid (if unbalanced team). So how's about a RMT?

    Begovic, Jaasy

    Santon, Jenkinson, Cuellar, Clyne, McCarthy

    Silva, Hazard, Bale, Kagawa, Noble

    Torres, Tevez, Pog

With 2.0 in the bank for the obligatory Torres to Rooney move.

    Vorm
    Shawcross Clichy Vertonghen
    Silva Kagawa Siggy Larsson
    Suarez Pogbrenyak Aguero

May change vorm to reina later on if impressed with his performances. Sorry Acquafresca but I'm very keen on Suarez and I strongly believe he has the potential to score against tough opposition.

Why pick a player with potential to score against tough opposition who has tough fixtures when you can pick players with the potential to score against tough opposition with easy fixtures?

I may swap Suarez with Pappiss anyway if I believe he may be rested due to competing in the olympics and I'm pretty Clichy will start, kolarov tends to start in the cup competitions.
