Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.”

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Does nobody else find it odd that not a single (I haven't seen one yet) RMT has included any Southampton players. I personally think people are under-rating them massively, even if their first 4 fixtures see them face City and Arsenal away, and United at home, in GW2 they are at home to Wigan and St Mary's really is a fortress if you look at their recent history... Just my thoughts anyway.

With the exception of the Swans backline, no promoted players started particularly well last season. Sinclair took a while.

Their recent history is in the Championship JR.

They have a very difficult opening period where we can see how they perform and consider their assets for easier fixtures.
But other teams have far more attractive early prospects for similar prices.

Agreed, but equally in League One it was a fortress and stepping up to the Championship their home form actually improved, so one would suggest that their home form should be good this year. You are right though perhaps it is best to wait a while before piling newly promoted players in your teams but I personally was just surprised that nobody's cheap 5th defender is Fonte or Clyne. For 4.0 Fonte is a goal machine and a real threat, equally Clyne will be chipping in with assists for the same price. I'm going to be starting with Fonte as my cheap 5th, and Lallana as my spare midfielder, playing Lallana in week 2 and against United in week 3. Lambert may replace Pog if he doesn't refind his form from last year too since he's on spotkicks and free kicks and is very prolific from both.

All good points JR, and I was very impressed with them last year. Lallana could well step up and Lambert as a cheap 3rd up front.

        had a look

Borini is 8, but has shocking fixtures for the first 6 weeks. Ba is 7.5 but no idea on his form, and there is Ramadan.

For 8.5 you have Bent, Jelly, Podolski.

Borini, Bent and Crouch I think are all decent options Borini has done well previously in the epl. Bent may fit in well into Paul Lambers attacking style of play and Crouch is Stoke's main man up front so I wouldn't be suprised 2 see him put a few goals in.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning Al-habsi? Yes, wigan is not great defensively but al-habsi is always good for a peno save or two and is tried in tested in PL.

Yeah if I just knew if Wilson(stoke)/Hughes(Ful) will play...I think stoke/Sun are very tight at home under their managers.Just don't like stoke playing Ars/Chel/City/Pool/ManU in the first 8 fixtures! I think I will give them a miss until the 4.5m(or even 4m) gems appear.

I rate Al-Habsi but he wasn't being mentioned as Roy was looking for a 9.5 combo and that would be 10 with Mignolet. At 5.0 Al-Habsi might be slightly overpriced.

Yep you get an awesome streak of home games with Mig/Al in the first 10, though it compromises slightly on the opponent side with CHE LIV and NEW.

Taaraabt versus Brunt. Which one would you choose? I've compared them using the compare tool, and there's really not much in it. Both had relatively low output compared to their efforts. 52 vs 48 just edges it for taaraabt when looking at the season as a whole. Fixture wise it's mostly the same for the 10 first matches as well.

Leaning towards Brunt atm, mainly because he worked wellto me the two last seasons, while taaraabt was pants the weeks I had him last season.

Anyone care to sway me either way? Or any other 6 million alternatives?

Taarabt will drive you crazy when he's in your team. Brunt's deliveries tend to be excellent but who will put the ball in the net for the Baggies? Plus Clarke (despite what he says) is still effectively a defence coach.
Taarabt (slightly) would be my choice.

Though I was raging at the time I suspect Mancini actually was right. Zab is a better defender than Richards and gets forward just as well too. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Zab ahead again this year.

I'm monitoring the City fullbacks as closely as you are, if there's even a chink of an opening (like Kolarov leaving or another bloody injury to Richards in the Olympics) I'm in. Rafael situation is more complicated for me as quite a few players can cover RB.

trying a different strategy this year.
im picking my initial team for 3 weeks only, until the international break.
priority one - 3 very strong captains.

almost every year i WC early, so why not plan for it?
every year 1 or 2 players you pick in week one let you down..ie-> dropped to bench, early injury etc...
after 3 weeks you know the players who are going to be regulars.
after 3 weeks you can pick the bargain players at 4.5, 5 million etc.. and the players who are going to rise quickly in value.

Decent strategy but I heavily doubt that you can determine which players will perform and rise quickly in value as player performans fluctuate tremendously over the course of the premier league season.

normally i'd agree with you but this is a euro/olympics year so it may be a bit later until the teams are settled than normal, so i would see it as a risk.

the euros wont have impact after GW3, the olympics wont impact a lot of teams / every position that is up for grabs...
foe example let's say i want a cheap Sunderland defender, there is Cuellar and Turner, after GW3 with MON's rigid first 11 it will be clear which one will play more regularly.
you have a fair point though, worth keeping an eye on :
[link|http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/07/10/scout-report-olympic-involvement/], and who is knocked out early etc..

After my first major haul of team I have a rough template...

    Friedel, Federici
    Lescott, Ivanovic, Cuellar, 4M, 4M
    Hazard, Bale, Noble, Maloney, 6M
    Aguero, Rooney, Graham

Notes - Hazard -->Kagawa/Valencia GW2. Soon using that cash to bring in DDG/Vidic.

1 - What 4M defenders work best with Cuellar? Ideally no double up on Reading.
2 - 6M mids, speak to me. Cant see much appeal there at this moment. Maybe Pilkington/Taarabt?

I had DDG and a weaker mid, but I want bale GW2 so starting with him now to save transfer.

I will look into Demel/Cuellar. For the other 4M it is between Norwich and Soton I guess, depends on my 6M mid. May get Pilks so wouldnt want a Norwich double up.

    De Gea, Green
Lescott, A Cole, Tomkins, Cuellar, Williams
    Hazard, Kagawa, Cabaye, Noble, Guthrie
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

....if Michu signs there might be some moving around though. Weeks 2 and 3 will probably see Adebayor and Kaboul come in for A Cole and Torres.

RMT. Can't really nail anything down that I'm in love with

    DDG Federici
    Cole Kaboul Lescott Hangeland Fabio
Noble Valencia Hazard Pienarr xxxx (Michu unless price is > 6.5 which it wont be)
Aguero Pog Ade (assuming he goes to Spurs, Pappis if not)

Have I spent too much on defense? Downgrade Kaboul or Hangeland to upgrade somewhere in the midfield? Is this simply an awful team?
