Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

Stoke have absolutely terrible fixtures for the first 10 matches. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the bottom 5 by then. Not to say they won't turn it around.

No I wouldn't but maybe Mancini is a better man than me 😉

Yeah in all likelihood Mancini will remember, still he played him constantly at the end of last season and seems to have faith in his Argentine attack. I kind of hope Tevez transfers out to keep me from punting on him.

true but for £ 9.0 mil he can still produce the goods, scored 11 goals and grabbed 5 assists last season. Didn't even play every game under AVB. He will always score more goals than Gerrard for example. I think this will be his last season in which he can probaly get 10 goals or so.

lampard didn't to badly last season, his points were decent, the problem was that he had a lot less time on the pitch than he did in the seasons where he was getting 200 + points. He's a decent shout for £9 million and if he plays he will still do o.k. imo

People are jumping on Kagawa and Hazard at similar prices. Think they are less of a risk but neither of them have PL experience. Lamps has been doing it for years. Sitting deeper, yes, he probably will be but no doubt he will still ghost into the box, score a few and take their pens.

Yeah that was the only draw back I could see as well.

Would be sacrifice in midfield relying on seven players each GW.

    Federici, Jussi
    Cole, Lescott, Hangeland, Cuellar, Nelson
    Silva, Sinclair, Hazard, Sinclair, Frei
    Rooney, Torres, Pogrebnyak
1.5 million spare to change Torres to Aguero/Tevez depending on if the latter gets gametime.
Keepers a bit of a worry, but apart from that is this ok to start with? Any comments much appreciated.

perch won't have a startinb berth. he's backup for the backline and tiote. santon, saylor, colo and hopefully debuchy. if not, probably raylor. if any of the fullbacks suffer a long term injury then perch will likely play. if a centre back, then williamson, with perch next in line. as for tiote, i'd say his replacement wud be a toss up between perch and gosling. perch being more defensively astute might get the nod. these are merely my opinions mind

Ok guys this should be it once the obvious transfers and prices are sorted:

    Friedel -- Federici

    Clichy -- A.Cole -- Cuellar -- McCartney -- Hangeland

    Walcott -- Pienarr -- Michu -- 5.5 mid -- Noble

    Aguero -- Torres -- Adebayor

1mil in the bank and can do Torres to Rooney if I downgrade Cole to Rafael.

    - Suggestions as to who the 5.5 mid should be, Ireland?
    - If Hughes from Fulham was nailed on I could have him and then changed Cuellar to Chico.

3rd choice CB behind Vertonghen and Kaboul.

My feeling. Kaboul was solid throughout the season and Vertonghen will obviously play.
          May be terribly wrong though.

Defender who will get very little game time with Kaboul and Vertonghen at CB for Spurs

Probably 3rd choice in the pecking order. Kaboul looks to be the better player and is more suited to AVB's expected style.

I think it depends on how AVB sets up. I am hoping for a three man effort, meself.

kaboul's a superior player. and defender. of that much i'm certain. allied with the general consensus of avb requiring speed in a high backline, i can't see dawson starting more often than rarely. a pity as he's a damn good defender. tho i'd actually place caulker above him. in terms of natural ability the guy's a star. darn spurs and their penchant fo stockpiling good defenders. ffs. give us one. williamson ain't fit to break in caulker's ruddy jockstrap

West Ham or Reading better set up as a defensive unit for the premier league? Who'll get more we think?

    DDG Cerny
    Lescott Ivanovic Cuellar McCartney Gorkks
    Hazard Bale Kagawa Noble Maloney
    Torres Tevez Graham
2 million for Rooney in week 2.

Thoughts - I know Cerny wont start, United keepers get 150+ points a season, I'll play him every week

Even before DDG being picked for the Olympic squad and thus training with Spain while Lindegaard trains with United, claiming DDG will play absolutely every match was daft.

Keepers dont get fatigued like outfield players, id be shocked if ddg didnt get 95% of prem fiztures this year, keepers dont get rotated, last season was an exception around january cause of ddg's mistakes, since he returned he was basically flawless

Ferguson is a big fan of Lindegaard also, I have DdG in my team at the moment, but am under no illusion that he is nailed on so have Federici in reserve.

This may change if I decide to go balls to the wall and gamble on Everton having a good start for once.

Similar ish in structure to mine so I'm a fan of it. One potential improvement tho, swap Cuellar for a starting 4.0 (Tierney for Norwich perhaps) or downgrade Maloney or Noble to Guthrie. Using that 0.5 improve Cerny to a 4.5 keeper cos although DDG will play most there are a few fixtures I wouldnt play him in, Everton away, Newcastle away etc, but up to you

Id rather sacrifice a promoted keeper for an extra big midfielder, i have 5 big hitters and graham can do damage with them fixtures, thats the thinking

cerny is by far the most selected cheap goalkeeper, so his price will rocket downwards. pick a different 4.0.
