Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

No, coz he was the soul goalscorer and leading man at Arsenal, which wouldnt be the case at United what with Rooney, Kagawa, Valencia...., so he wouldn't get as many goals. And thats if he stays injury free.

I don't think that necessarily would be more effective than playing with two more defensive minded midfielders, even against weaker opposition. Even the not very good teams will be smart enough to stick two central midfielders in there to limit supply.

He'll have to otherwise he's a fool. When RVP's contract runs out next year Arsenal with get a big fat £0 for him as he'll be on the free. Arsenal will rather get £20mil or so for him now than nothing next year.

We don't need the money. We're loaded. We need silverware. Desperately.

That is what would really be best to for the club. Would we pay £20million for a trophy? Hell yes. Anyone would. Can RVP guarantee us silverware? Sadly, and manifestly, no. Is he the best striker we have any chance of having in our squad this season?

      Enough of Rate My Grav.

I like a strong defence, but yours rotates poorly: you're spoilt for choice in GWs 1, 4, 7, 10 & 12 but have some horror fixtures in GWs 3 (REA ARS QPR tot mcy), 5 (STK MUN ARS new tot) & 13 (MCY swa che eve mun).

Plus you've doubled up on the QPR defence. Bad idea.

Otherwise not too bad, but Britton and Pog could be weak spots.

i like carrick but he's never quite been 'nailed on manchester utd first teamer' standard. he's excellent positionally and has good vision, but his first touch isn't that great and he's just generally pretty mediocre when pressed, not close to the standard of players like alonso/pirlo/busquets etc. there's this really condescending myth revolving around carrick where people believe 'if you don't rate carrick you just don't understand his role, he's too subtle for you', etc, which might be the case with the idiot down the pub but not for most of us. he isn't good enough to keep rotating the ball at a high pace when he has no time, and even in one of his best seasons (last year) he was absolutely bossed in several of the more high profile games.

not sure sahin would turn out any better mind you. -_-

I think it's about confidence and his introvert personality that are the problem, he seems insecure about taking the game by the scruff of the neck a la Scholesy, but posted his best football ever when Scholes temporarily retired...

I know that the Barcelona boys mentioned if he was Spanish he'd be a big star

not convinced. you just have to watch him for five minutes to see he doesn't have the grace and poise of the top spanish players; i don't think he'd have come close to making their euros squad. i mean, i don't like being critical because he's obviously the kind of player england needs to start valuing more highly, and he is class; i just think people go overboard sometimes...

I think even the likes of Xavi and Iniesta would look a little more tagged in the tempo of the premier league, I think that's the point they were making

on the flipside, he's good at intercepting the ball, and he's certainly not a *bad* deep-lying playmaker; i'm not too worried about him so long as he had a more dynamic partner beside him. it's a shame hargreaves was made out of polystyrene, i would've liked to see a partnership flourish there. but we need to get, say, a de rossi type of player in, an essien, etcetc... someone who can not only take the game by the scruff of the neck, but also keep the ball moving quickly as well. maybe moutinho would be a good option?...

Agree with that. It's hard when for most of the season we were playing with 2 passers in midfield. Carrick + Anderson of our current midfield would maybe be better for the bigger games where they wouldn't get so overrun. Carrick + Scholes is fine for most games, but like you say in the big games it's asking for trouble. If Anderson can recapture the form from his 1st season and remain injury free, then you could make a case for another midfielder not being needed this summer. I think Carrick is great, and it's a shame that there's a stigma attached to him, amongst some United fans, that most times it's his fault when we lose. He seems like a confidence player, so that would maybe affect him. He's our best CM currently by a long way though.

re: anderson, that's a bigggggggggg if haha. but yeah, i think we were all hoping he'd become that player by now, shame it hasn't happened that way. had the potential, but he just looks too much of a headless chicken for the most part, and too often a poor decision-maker/distributor. his partnership with cleverley at the start of last season was exciting though, so i don't want to write him off just yet.

Most teams with De Gea don't expect to play him in the 1st GW anyway. That said, Rafael's a good punt, i'd take the gamble probably.

    A) ddg + ivanovic + lescott + lampard + sinclair + aguero + petric

    B) friedel + cashley + clichy + kagawa + maloney + rooney + tevez

    Both cost the same

Just a thought, and one that shows just how impossible it is at the moment to finalise teams when there are still gonna be several forays in the transfer market.

If RVP goes to City do people think the appeal of Silva will go up dramatically? I understand that he is very expensive, but Aguero/Tevez/Balotelli's playing time and point-scoring potential will obviously be reduced dramatically. RVP too will be rotated at city so may not be worthwhile at 13.0.

So, assuming City attacking cover is needed, Silva and Yaya are surely the only two who are likely to not be rotated? At 10.0, Silva may be good value then? Especially considering his potential for goals and assists?
