Ryan Noble climbs off the bench to secure a win for Sunderland against FC Groningen, in a game that sees Carlos Cuellar and Wes Brown both limp out of the action in the first-half. Roberto Di Matteo introduces the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole into the fray against Paris St-Germain, but Chelsea are forced to rely on a late strike to earn a hard-fought draw…

Sunderland 3 FC Groningen 2
The Black Cats finished in third place in the Peace Cup after a last-gasp victory over FC Groningen. Ben Wilson was handed a starting role between the sticks after Simon Mignolet picked up a minor groin problem in training, while Carlos Cuellar took his place in the first XI after impressing as a sub in the previous match with Seongnam, as Martin O’Neill opted for a 4-3-3 for the match against the Dutch side. Sunderland took the lead against the run of play through Connor Wickham but went in at the break 2-1 down after Cuellar and Wes Brom both limped off injured.

The second half saw O’Neill hand opportunities to a number of youngsters but the Premier League outfit failed to make their threat count, with Wickham and Campbell, in particular, missing chances aplenty. Sunderland’s final substitute, Ryan Noble, came on with just 13 minutes remaining and his spark helped turn the match in his side’s favour. Noble set up Campbell to score with just two minutes remaining before then finding the net himself with a superb solo effort, beating three men before hammering home from 18 yards – a fine way to score his first senior goal for the club.

Post-match, O’Neill gave an injury update and didn’t seem overly concerned on Mignolet or Cuellar; good news for Fantasy managers eyeing up the latter at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

“Simon had a groin problem today and we decided not to risk him in the game. Wes has done some damage and that’s a concern, while Carlos complained of his thigh being sore.”

Sunderland Starting XI: Wilson (Pickford 64); Gardner, Brown (Egan 37), Cuellar (Bramble 13), Richardson (Noble 77); Colback, Cattermole, Meyler; Lynch (Laing 60), Campbell, Wickham.

Paris St-Germain 1 Chelsea 1
Chelsea won a share of the spoils in their second game of their US tour thanks to a late strike from 18-year-old Brazilian Lucas Piazon. The striker came off the bench to combine with compatriot Ramires and claw the Londoners level.

Roberto Di Matteo kept faith with five of the side that took the field last time out against Seattle Sounders: Paulo Ferreira, David Luiz, John Mikel Obi, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku were all retained in the starting lineup.

There were several points of interest here: firstly we again saw a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Hazard getting an hour of pitch time, playing up behind the lone striker, Lukaku. The Chelsea boss emphasised the options he has with the Belgian in his post-match statements

“Hazard is a versatile player and he can play on the wing and he can play in the middle and that is where we are using him, but it depends on the options we have because once everyone is back we will have more of those.”

Di Matteo then went on to confirm that the 4-2-3-1 will likely remain over the course of the season…

“This formation is a shape that we used at the end of last season and it has served us well. We are trying two shapes in practice as well to be ready for all eventualities, and it will also depends on the players we will have available.”

Both statements will increase confidence in Hazard as a Fantasy option for next season, although clearly, as Di Matteo mentions, there are options to come into to the equation – most notably Juan Mata.

Frustratingly, we’ve yet to see Branislav Ivanovic at right-back. The Serb skippered the side from the centre of defence against Seattle and came off the bench yesterday to replace David Luiz. Di Matteo has started Ferreira at left-back while he waits for Ashley Cole’s return, with youngsters Sam Hutchinson and Nathaniel Chalobah taking up duties on the right over the two friendlies. So far then, we’ve had little assurance that Ivanovic will be free to claim the right-back role for next season.

Elsewhere, the Chelsea boss was able to welcome back some Euro 2012 players, with John Terry, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech all seeing their first action of the pre-season. Chelsea face MLS All-Starts on Wednesday – a game which should see the likes of Cole and Terry considered for starts which might well offer us more clues as to Di Matteo’s thinking for his defence. Fernando Torres is yet to join up with the party, but is being lined up for a possible run-out at the weekend.

Chelsea Starting XI: Cech (Turnbull 62); Hutchinson (Chalobah 62), Cahill (Terry 62), David Luiz (Ivanovic 45), Ferreira (Cole 62); Mikel (McEachran 62), Lampard (Essien 45); De Bruyne (Marin 45), Hazard (Malouda 62), Kakuta (Ramires 45); Lukaku (Piazon 62).

Jelavic is still really good at that price, especially with favourable fixtures from GW2-13. I'll be having him, don't forget how good Everton were at the end of last year, yes, they are slow starters but the winds are changing over there. Moyes actually has managed to get hold of some money.

Balance is very important so I understand that and I'm struggling too, more hoping that Tevez will play to be honest, but do try and get one of Silva or Aguero in...as tough as it may be, you can't really ignore them.

I assume he'll play Federici in GW 2, and in those GWs where United have a tough away fixture. Reading kept the most clean sheets in the Championship last season, so they aren't defensively hopeless. Plus, it's always good to have a playing back-up keeper in the event that De Gea is injured or suspended.

Fabio instead of Cuellar given that Cuellar is injured and would play at CB rather than RB or so I've been told.

I'd also pick Pienaar ahead of Larsson (given that Pienaar is moving back to Everton). Then again maybe I'm biased because I'm South African.

I do like Sunderland though (honest).

When I first heard about Papiss, I got him and Ba in together as soon as they got back from ACON. I reasoned that two senegalese lads living in Newcastle would naturally strike up a rapport that would carry over onto the pitch and they'd run riot together. Boy was I wrong (though Papiss alone paid for the gamble). They don't seem to play well together and if they did, Pardew would have paired them before now.

This quote is slightly misleading I think.

It could be read as "he will play 90% of Newcastle's games in the centre forward position"

It could also mean that 90% of the time when he's on the pitch, he will play centre forward. That doesn't give any indication of how much gametime he will get.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to that comment. I'm personally avoiding Newcastle at the start, although Ba could be great value if he/they hit some form!

There's no chance he won't start, though. Ben Arfa is the one that comes off early if there's 3 up front, and it's not like they have many options. It just seems he's saying this so that they keep Ba.

I think Dembele will play in CM regardless of whether Dempsey leaves or not. He seems to have been converted to that position by Jol, and Fulham don't have alot of quality CM's atm. Him & Diarra look like a good partnership in the making. He won the 2nd highest no. of tackles in the lge last season. He will still make forward forays, but even at 6m, he's not got much ff appeal for me. Too little goal threat.

Not the greatest fantasy prospect, plays in the 2 of a 4-2-3-1 so that's very deep IMO. Don't think Dempsey will affect Dembele at all because I think they will play:

      -------Diarra?----Dembele-------
      Ruiz-------Rodallega------Dempsey/Duff/Frei
      ----------------Petric

Petric is a good pick regardless and I don't think Dembele will have great returns anyway so Petric won't challenge them.

Torres > Rooney means having to take a hit or have £2m spare which is quite alot. Any ideas?

The same dilemna why i'm not going with Aguero. Not keen on taking hits ,so having Rooney from the start over Aguero and offers solid captain choice for GW2 and 3 .But then not having City attacking coverage feels just so wrong so i've gone with Silva in midfield. Torres-> Adebayor in GW2 is ideal.

    Friedel, Federici.
    Terry, Clichy, Demel, Cuellar, Clyne.

    to

    Begovic, JussiJ ( 😉 )
    Terry, Coloccini, Cuellar, Williams, Hangeland.

here's a thought.. Downgrade Cuellar to Fonte and upgrade Bego to Migs.. Gives you a gr8 keeper and gives you a permanent bench warmer as your other 4 are too expensive to bench

the way i see it until GW 8 you'll be playing
Terry Hangeland Williams most weeks.. with a 5 million defender in Colo as back up. You don't need a fifth really.. might as well get migs in and benefit from sunderland's back line

I don't thik having four 5.0ish defenders is a good idea. It gets very compicated very quickly, especially with injuries, for no real reduction in cost.

              go something like 5, 4.5, 4.5

What makes you think both won't play?

AVB is not obliged to stick with Harry formation and Harry set up.

Siggy is also too risky, its a big step up, Charlie Adam was sensational at Blackpool, was out of his depth at Liverpool, VDV is one of their true top class players.

You have no idea of how AVB will set his team up or how he will play players.

Please don't make comments like that, it ruins the site.

if anything surely VDV will play in his preferred position since he is one of their few world class players. Sig will more likely have to fit in around him

Defence is currently: Terry, Williams, Fabio, Cuellar and Demel.

Truth is Fabio is only good for GW1 and then GW6 onwards so no idea if I'm keeping him.

To answer your question, I really wouldn't worry about filling the gap in your midfield yet as things will no doubt change before the deadline and there are a lot of options in the midfield in the 5-7m bracket.
