Ryan Noble climbs off the bench to secure a win for Sunderland against FC Groningen, in a game that sees Carlos Cuellar and Wes Brown both limp out of the action in the first-half. Roberto Di Matteo introduces the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole into the fray against Paris St-Germain, but Chelsea are forced to rely on a late strike to earn a hard-fought draw…

Sunderland 3 FC Groningen 2
The Black Cats finished in third place in the Peace Cup after a last-gasp victory over FC Groningen. Ben Wilson was handed a starting role between the sticks after Simon Mignolet picked up a minor groin problem in training, while Carlos Cuellar took his place in the first XI after impressing as a sub in the previous match with Seongnam, as Martin O’Neill opted for a 4-3-3 for the match against the Dutch side. Sunderland took the lead against the run of play through Connor Wickham but went in at the break 2-1 down after Cuellar and Wes Brom both limped off injured.

The second half saw O’Neill hand opportunities to a number of youngsters but the Premier League outfit failed to make their threat count, with Wickham and Campbell, in particular, missing chances aplenty. Sunderland’s final substitute, Ryan Noble, came on with just 13 minutes remaining and his spark helped turn the match in his side’s favour. Noble set up Campbell to score with just two minutes remaining before then finding the net himself with a superb solo effort, beating three men before hammering home from 18 yards – a fine way to score his first senior goal for the club.

Post-match, O’Neill gave an injury update and didn’t seem overly concerned on Mignolet or Cuellar; good news for Fantasy managers eyeing up the latter at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

“Simon had a groin problem today and we decided not to risk him in the game. Wes has done some damage and that’s a concern, while Carlos complained of his thigh being sore.”

Sunderland Starting XI: Wilson (Pickford 64); Gardner, Brown (Egan 37), Cuellar (Bramble 13), Richardson (Noble 77); Colback, Cattermole, Meyler; Lynch (Laing 60), Campbell, Wickham.

Paris St-Germain 1 Chelsea 1
Chelsea won a share of the spoils in their second game of their US tour thanks to a late strike from 18-year-old Brazilian Lucas Piazon. The striker came off the bench to combine with compatriot Ramires and claw the Londoners level.

Roberto Di Matteo kept faith with five of the side that took the field last time out against Seattle Sounders: Paulo Ferreira, David Luiz, John Mikel Obi, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku were all retained in the starting lineup.

There were several points of interest here: firstly we again saw a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Hazard getting an hour of pitch time, playing up behind the lone striker, Lukaku. The Chelsea boss emphasised the options he has with the Belgian in his post-match statements

“Hazard is a versatile player and he can play on the wing and he can play in the middle and that is where we are using him, but it depends on the options we have because once everyone is back we will have more of those.”

Di Matteo then went on to confirm that the 4-2-3-1 will likely remain over the course of the season…

“This formation is a shape that we used at the end of last season and it has served us well. We are trying two shapes in practice as well to be ready for all eventualities, and it will also depends on the players we will have available.”

Both statements will increase confidence in Hazard as a Fantasy option for next season, although clearly, as Di Matteo mentions, there are options to come into to the equation – most notably Juan Mata.

Frustratingly, we’ve yet to see Branislav Ivanovic at right-back. The Serb skippered the side from the centre of defence against Seattle and came off the bench yesterday to replace David Luiz. Di Matteo has started Ferreira at left-back while he waits for Ashley Cole’s return, with youngsters Sam Hutchinson and Nathaniel Chalobah taking up duties on the right over the two friendlies. So far then, we’ve had little assurance that Ivanovic will be free to claim the right-back role for next season.

Elsewhere, the Chelsea boss was able to welcome back some Euro 2012 players, with John Terry, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech all seeing their first action of the pre-season. Chelsea face MLS All-Starts on Wednesday – a game which should see the likes of Cole and Terry considered for starts which might well offer us more clues as to Di Matteo’s thinking for his defence. Fernando Torres is yet to join up with the party, but is being lined up for a possible run-out at the weekend.

Chelsea Starting XI: Cech (Turnbull 62); Hutchinson (Chalobah 62), Cahill (Terry 62), David Luiz (Ivanovic 45), Ferreira (Cole 62); Mikel (McEachran 62), Lampard (Essien 45); De Bruyne (Marin 45), Hazard (Malouda 62), Kakuta (Ramires 45); Lukaku (Piazon 62).

Doosra I was looking for u. What is this nonsense I would not picked Nollan? Why? He was first name of my team sheet. He will score double digit goals throw the season,. the fixtures are good, he is playing CAM for a manager that he likes. What is there not to like? Proven in the premiership too? Suddenly Diame is threat for his place?

Please I need your opinion Michael.

Well, he has slowed down - a lot. He is picking up a lot of yellows. 4 of his goals were a result of him being out of position, and we conceded immediately afterwards. If I'm honest, I would like to see the back of him.
Diame is quicker, and stronger, and less prone to foul.

      * DDG/ Federici - no fan on spending that much on goalkeepers myself,
      * 3 4.9m defenders, same as me this time of the year and guess what I paid the price, I was out of 100k until mid season.
      * Midfield - Maloney and Noble gambles, like mines last year Moses/ Sess at the beginning. They
might need time to gel. Also Mark Noble, I am not impressed at all. He isn't good enough for the Premier Ship, never mind the penalties. They might or more often not occur.
      * Ade, Torres, Jelly hahahaahahahhaahahha

      Good luck mate.

P.S. One thing I've learns for 5 years playing this game. No feelings included meaning Jelly picked because he is Croatian.

fair enough, but is Everton coverage really essential?

I think Pienaar and Graham would look much better, it'll free up some much needed cash too.

Just my opinion though! If you think that Jelly's gonna continue where he left off, then he'll obviously still be a great pick but I can't se it happening on the level that it happened for him last year.

Lescott and Vidic are both good choices so it just depends which team's defence you prefer to have or if you have De Gea, etc.

I don't like the Toure pick myself but others seem to.

I personally think Vidic is worth the extra cash, especially over clichy.

I'm undecided on Yaya. I don't think I'll go for it, though. Aguero might be enough coverage.

I do too, particularly as they're not distracted and tired by Europa this year. Their opening fixtures are pretty tough though, whereas Fulham's are relatively good, so I'm inclined to wait to get Stoke coverage in...

Question about De Gea. What tactic are you going for? Getting a keeper who rotates well like Jaask, or getting a keeper who is likely to go up in price like Begovic? I've thought about it and i am unlikely to pick Jaask over De Gea.

    Need your opinions lads?
I'm on the daily mail FF

Is it worth downgrading my defence from: Vidic, Vermalen, Ekotto

to Cuellar, Wilson Distin so I can put Silva in the mid?

Mid already consists of: Bale, Valencia, Hazard, McClean (swap for Silva?) Kagawa (Sub - Michu)

What do you think? Go a bit weaker defence but still reasonablly okay to have a great midfield?

The more I think about it the more I'm amazed that Hazard has been given a 9.5m starting price. That is alongside proven players like Bale, Dempsey and Gerrard and only 0.5 behind Silva. And ahead of Valencia, Lampard and VDV/Siggy...

I, on the other hand, think he's over-rated.

The excitement is because he's a big money signing. I don't see anyone getting excited about Podolski, yet he's a far more proven player, and played in a stronger league. But he's not as highly rated because his transfer only cost 10 million. That's only because Wenger doesn't pay the Andy Carroll price for players. If Podolski had gone to Chelsea for 35 million, everyone would have the hots for Podolski.

I would pick Mata, Ramires, Meireles, or even Lampard before picking Hazard.

      Just start with Rooney.

Other than that you're taking a punt on Pog (which I was leaning towards, but you may find yourself stuck if it doesn't work out), and your defence is appalling

Arteta could well be on pens and set pieces now.

Diaby could get a run in the attacking role which Ramsey hogged which could be a bargin.

Yaya is gonna be influential for City as will VDV for Spurs and Sessengnon and then there is Valencia,

Those are the few I'm pondering then looking down at Pienaar, McLean and N Zogbia.

MF is the weakest area in the game this year IMO.

        Diaby's definitely in my team.

It looks like he's fit now and Wenger is a huge fan of him so I reckon he might get a lot of game time especially with Jack and Rosicky injured and Ramsey involved in the olympic games.

I'm worried about Oxlade Chamberlain though. Wenger played him sparingly last term, so he's dubious apropos game time, but I don't really want to leave him out in case he explodes onto the scene with goals and assists, even if grabbed off the bench.

What do people think about Chamberlain's prospects?

Only today Wenger has been rimming Diaby saying if fit then he would have been the first mf on Blanc's teamsheet at the Euros, that speaks volumes with regards to how highly he rates him.

Chamberlin will be a strong option if walcott leaves, if not then imagine him to be in and out this year.

Gervinho...lots to come from him this year but too early to say how if he will fit into the starting line-up when Podi and Giroud are picked. I think Wenger will play him more centrally this year off Giroud to allow Podolski to play on the left flank and Walcott on the right.
If he starts, he'll turn out to be a real OOP bargain.

Yes. If you can squeeze the extra 0.5 he is well worth it imo. Would go for De Gea though if you can rejig ur defence to save some dough.

I have a feeling Vidic will get injured early on so go with Ivanovic or Lescott. I would also avoid Torres too. A lot of people seem to be picking him but he's too much of a risk for me.

Morning all. Let the day's tinkering commence!

    My defence:

    De Gea Federici
    Terry Lescott Hangeland Cuellar Demel

Any way I can improve it for the same value? (Dont need it cheaper as happy with the rest of my team, unless Michu is 6.5)

I think Mignolet and Green will both be excellent value over the season but rotation options are a bit tricky for both.

Get Geoff Horsfield into your side. The lad is world class.

On the subject of Defenders, my draft defence seems a little unusual:

    Lescott (6.5), A Cole (6.5), Vertonghan (6.5), Tierney (4.0), Demel (4.0)

The three big boys will play most weeks, with the two cheapies rotating nicely to give coverage. Given that most people will be paying around 27 m for two big guys and a rotating set of three, paying 0.5 extra (and I could easily get that back by downgrading to Clichy or Kaboul) for the extra big name seems like a sensible idea to me. Thoughts?
