Roberto Martinez added to the growing pool of Scottish-born talent currently plying their trade at Wigan last week by snapping up the highly-rated Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen on a three-year contract. The 19-year-old arrives in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £500,000 and is the Latics’ first signing of the summer transfer window:

Fyvie is the sixth player from north of the border to join up at the DW Stadium, following Shaun Maloney, Gary Caldwell, Conor Sammon, James McCarthy and James McArthur to the Latics, and is expected to provide competition for the latter two for a central midfield role in Martinez’s favoured 3-4-2-1 formation next term. The Wigan boss was glowing in his assessment of the new boy, going on to say:

I’m excited because we’re signing such a strong character and a great personality at just 19 years of age. Technically he’s very gifted, enjoys playing in the midfield where he can cover large areas, he’s very powerful off the ball and in possession is someone who can read the tempo of the game very well. Also you have to remember that for such a young player he’s played a lot of games in the SPL at a high standard which shows his maturity.

The Statistics

Making his debut in the 2009-10 season, Fyvie became the youngest player ever to feature for Aberdeen and earned Man of the Match award on his debut against Hamilton. He scored just one goal over 25 appearances in his first campaign and, in doing so, became the youngest player to notch in a Scottish Premier League match. The following season was a disaster, however; Fyvie made just five league appearances after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in August but returned to action last term without any ill-effects.

Firmly established in the Dons’ first XI under former Scotland boss Craig Brown, the youngster made 28 appearances in 2011/12 but, after picking up interest from plenty suitors, made it clear midway through the season that he was determined to ply his trade in England this August. In total, he made 58 appearances for the Pittodrie outfit, scoring twice and providing four assists, and has also represented his country at Under 17 and Under 19 level.

Talking about the player’s potential, Brown could hardly commend Fyvie higher when assessing the midfielder’s abilities:

I’ve worked with some of the best Scottish midfielders over the years, including John Collins, Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson. I was also the assistant manager of Scotland when Paul McStay made his big breakthrough. They were all midfielders of exceptional quality, but Fraser has the potential to become the best of the lot. He’s not there yet, but he has that wee bit of extra dig about him – the sort of extra quality that helped Paul Scholes become one of the best midfielders in Europe.

The Prospects

Martinez has a history of blooding young talent at the DW, with age clearly no barometer of quality in the Spaniard’s opinion. McCarthy and Victor Moses, for example, made 33 and 36 starts in the season gone by, despite both players being just 21 years of age. Having lost Mohamed Diame, Steve Gohouri and Hendry Thomas already this summer, Martinez clearly has room for more personnel in the middle of the park but with McCarthy and McArthur now seemingly established in the two central midfield slots, the Wigan boss alluded to the fact that Fyvie may be afforded time to adjust to his new surroundings:

The physical demands of the Premier League are very different to the SPL and bridging that gap takes time, but Fraser has time on his side and we’re all desperate to see him enjoying his football, welcomed by the fans. He wants to compete for his place straight away, and we’ve seen with the likes of James McCarthy and James McArthur how big that jump can be at first, but look at them now and they’re reliable players who we all take great pride in watching.

In all likelihood, Fyvie may well be a peripheral figure if Martinez’s cautious approach with McCarthy and McArthur in their respective debut campaigns is anything to go by. While 19 of the former’s 20 appearances came in the first XI in his initial season at the DW, as many as 15 of the latter’s 18 games arrived from the bench. Priced at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, Fyvie is one of the cheapest options around but looks to have little appeal if Martinez plans to ease him into the fold.

Analysing the fixture list, home games against (CHE, STO, FUL, EVE) and trips to Southampton and Swansea in the first eight Gameweeks offer plenty of hope for the Latics after a stuttering start to the previous campaign. With the 3-4-2-1 system now firmly established, Martinez’s men have an opportunity to maintain the brilliant run of form that earned them wins in seven of the last nine in 2011/12 and could well be an altogether different proposition for Fantasy managers this time round. It’s more than doubtful as to whether Fyvie can make an early impression, however, with Maloney and Jean Beausejour both likely to afford us the most prosperous cut-price route into the Latics’ midfield across the Fantasy games.

There is a dearth of fantasy value in the 7.5 - 6.5 midfielder bracket.

            I quite like 6.5 and 6!

Not wild about anything between 7.5 and 7. Not a Ben Arfa fan for one reason or another. I'd prefer Cabaye if he's at the top of a midfield 3 in a 433 again actually. Lit up at the end of last season.

          Only if he gets injured.

You could have said the same thing about Van Persie a couple of seasons ago.

If Diaby stays fit, he will play most games, and provide assists, and score goals, and provide me with differentials, and very soon, the, whole, world, will be mine, all, mine. *mwahahahahaa*

The cool thing about Diaby, is that he's such an injury prone player, that nobody is going to pick him. People will just think I'm trolling or a lunatic. But he's such a world class player that if he stays fit, he can be a points factory. He's more creative than people think. People assume he's a DM but he's really a box-to-box midfielder like Wilshere.

I agree on the box-to-box, hence I expect his returns to be somewhere between that of our holding midfielders and our attacking midfielders - pretty decent though not spectacular. At 6.5 he may be worth a punt though.

I have always rated him too.

He can play with Arteta and Song or Rosicky and Song, or Arteta and Coquelin, or Wilshere and Song. There are so many options. Of course, this makes him a rotation risk, but his imperious performances early on is going to have him nailed on. I can't wait.

Think you'll be waiting a while for that one to come off.

Arteta and Song to play most games with one of Ramsey, Rosicky, Coquelin or Wilshere (when fit).

Oxlade Chamberlain or Podolski could even play central against weaker sides.

I don't think that Ramsey will start the season (because he's going to win a gold medal at the Olympics).
                  Rosicky is injured.
Coquelin, when he does play, would not necessarily replace Diaby in the starting lineup. He could replace Arteta or Song.
                  Wilshere is injured.
Podolski will play left wing or number 10, depending on the shape of the team.
Chamberlain will probably keep playing on the wing.

In GW1, the most likely midfield triumvirate are Song, Arteta and Diaby.

When Rosicky and Wilshere get back, it's not a given that they would replace Diaby in that lineup. They could replace Arteta instead, especially if Diaby's been putting in good performances.

With all players fit, my first choice midfield triumvirate would be Song, Wilshere, Diaby.

More importantly, Wenger rates Diaby very highly. That's why, like Van Persie, he's kept faith with him all these years. He would also be selected ahead of Cabaye for the French national team when 100% fit.

Of course, Wenger will want to protect Diaby from injury, so there's a rotation risk in that respect, but if he puts in good performances early on, there'll be less chance of being rotated out. Van Persie is injury prone and he wasn't rotated out much for the last two seasons.

I'm glad that people think I'm being a loon about this though. The fewer people who choose Diaby, the better my differential.

Repost from the deadzone last night.

    ROTATION V REGULAR

OK here goes. Using last season’s results I compared the CS you’d get with
    A) Playing a City defender every week
    B) Playing whoever’s playing at home out of Sunderland/Newcastle.

Sunderland and Newcastle had near-perfect home/away rotation so there was only one situation when they were both playing home/away and their CS outcomes differed.

    Result:
    City got 17 clean sheets.
    SUN/NEW got 16 clean sheets.

    Thoughts:
For comparison, individually Newcastle got 15 clean sheets and Sunderland got 12 clean sheets.
I was a bit surprised too, but the explanation is obvious: you miss out on the surprise away clean sheets. Yep, I counted them too. 6 to be precise.

Bear in mind though you don't seem to get more POINTS, the VALUE was better since the cost of City + 4.0 was around 10, while New + Sun was around 9.

Having the pair of rotators usually means your bench is stronger when needed rather than the 4.0m defender.

When you rotate you inevitably miss some CS too though, so you wouldn't get all those 16 CS. Well, very unlikely anyway.

E.g. play Newcastle boys for an 'easy' home game. They don't get a CS whereas Sunderland defender(s) on your bench get a CS away to Arsenal (or whoever).

I expect Scholes to still feature this year, but all things going well he shouldn't see much more than 20-25 games this season. If not then I'd suggest something is going wrong.

      Tough.

Doubt SAF will switch from his tried and tested 4-4-2 whatever the media says, or Kagawa says about his position.

      Valencia Scholes Carrick Kagawa

for most games. Young and Nani rotating on the wings, Cleverley and Anderson rotating with Scholes.

Kagawa won't play wide. He'll play in the middle but whether thats in CM in a 4-4-2 or in the hole in a 4-4-1-1, I guess will depend on the opposition

Nah he's not cut out for the 2 man CM role. Will be a CAM in the 4-2-3-1 system, especially in the away games. He may play on the wing a little, but it would be strange given our other wingers. Welbeck could cut into his game time at home, but he'll play almost all the away games, assuming he settles in well, which he looks to be doing.

If you think Hernandez and Welbeck will just disappear off the radar to make way then you're dreaming. It will be rotation central and you will all be complaining within weeks

Kagawa will be a typically frustrating FFS bandwagon. The money can be much better spent

Scholes will play a decent amount of games, his fitness levels will only allow him so much game time and Fergie will be keen to blood the youngsters where possible.

Kagawa so far is looking like the best link between midfield and attack we have and his fitness is so good that I can see him playing the vast majority of games. I can see him asserting his class from the off.

I'd love the stones to have Jellyfish from the get-go but I have been put off by the apparently very real phenomenon of Everton's poor starts. I looked into it, thinking that it might be one of those myths that get around but it really isn't.

I like your midfield quite a lot.

Gimli, I think both Cisse and Jelly are potentially over-priced. Of course, time will tell, but I'd rather start with a more nailed striker and a cheap 'trier' - perhaps Bent/Graham?

Mid looks looks very decent, but I'd be a bit worried about the GK pair. Obviously you have your own hunches but I'm playing the DDG guarantee until such time as a spot a cheap combo to rotate.

Hmm. I'm fairly set on Jela and Cisse.
No faith in Swansea until I see them play without Rodgers, and AVL will struggle to adapt to playing attacking football for a while, I feel.
Keepers are obviously a worry, but I'm hoping the rotation can do the job again this year, Stoke should be better defensively this season and Reading look the most solid of the promoted sides at the back. Thanks for the input lads

You're right. But if you do it over the season, Yaya is a clear winner (granted more mins played). I am not convinced comparing the last 6 games of the previous season is a solid indicator of what will happen at the start of the next, unless you believe Nasri will be an integral part of Mancini's plans from the get-go. In which case he could be an excellent choice.

Malouda did play in the last friendly. RDM is such an old guard manager I think there is still a place for him.

With so much depth I can't even be sure Hazard is worth it. Conservatively let's assume he starts MOST games (not all), I can still see him being protected by regular subs off for another player in the Chelsea galaxy of midfielders.

Yeah there is massive scope for rotation especially when you factor in their heavy schedule and the new era of small attacking players who tend to tire late on in games. Just look at Mata. Very rarely played 90 minutes. Food for though Isacki.

It's his groin, apparently. No confirmation of extent until physio's had a good look and poss scan, but AVB seemed pretty relaxed about it.

Fairly happy with this team (although perhaps slightly 'standard') - I invite you to tear it apart now:

    Foster, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Clichy, Saylor, Cuellar, Hughes
    Bale, Kagawa, McClean, Maloney, Noble
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

    2.0 in bank.

    * I think my GKs rotate well, and are alternative to the usual GK combos I've seen in RMTs.
    * I think the NEW/SUN/FUL rotation will be very solid too.
    * Am really torn on Kagawa/Torres v Hazard/Rooney - input very welcome.

It's fine because it's a fairly generic team. Good though.

Hazard + Torres for the DGW then switch Torres > Rooney

I had Clichy last season and quickly realised he was a high rotation risk
Torres to Rooney in GW3 I assume... not sure on Kagawa yet, again rotation risk

            if he's 5.5 yes, if he's 6, I'd prefer DDG.

I have 2 reasons for being unsure on Brad and 1 for being sure I may want a Chelsea defender after GW3

            1) Not sure how Spurs defence will be under AVB, high line and all.

            2) Can you see Brad saving a peno? DDG can

            3) Have you seen Chelsea's fixtures after GW3, qpr, STO, ars, NOR, reckon I might want a Chelsea defender in for 3 of those 4.

      DDG and Vertonghen?

Why not Cit out of interest, surely they look good value for CS? Otherwise maybe double on Chelsea with Ivan, Skrtel and bank 0.5? Kos/Kaboul/Huth and bank 1?

So now, Chelsea mids = ManC forwards in terms of rotation and skill.

Obv, Mata / Aguero likely the most nailed-on from the two groups, but still, heartache seems to be inevitable...
