Chelsea continued to splash the cash with wild abandon earlier this week, after the club confirmed on Wednesday they have signed the highly-rated Brazilian Oscar on a five-year contract. The 20-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £25m and is the fifth attacking midfielder to join the club since the end of last season, following the acquisitions of Eden and Thorgan Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin De Bruyne.

The transfer comes as little surprise, bearing in mind the midfielder revealed days ago he had already undergone a medical for the Champions League winners. While Roberto Di Matteo lavished praise upon the youngster, the Blues boss also indicated the new signings may need time to gel within the Chelsea system in the season ahead:

He is a fantastic player, one of the youngest to push through to the Brazilian national team and he will be a fantastic signing for us. Oscar is a very exciting young talent, a creative midfield player who scores goals. He will add a lot of options and solutions for us in midfield. It will be a challenge to make sure we have the right balance within the team so we will have to see how we fit the team together with all the players.

The Statistics

Oscar’s career began in the Sao Paulo youth system in his native country before he made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 17. His only season there harvested 11 league appearances and a trio of assists before he moved on to Internacional in December 2010. The attacking midfielder made just five appearances over the remainder of his first season at his new club but the 2011/12 campaign saw Oscar produce the type of attacking returns that made him such a highly sought-after talent. Over the course of 26 league appearances, he returned 10 goals and seven assists and helped steer his side to the local state championship. He also turned out five times for the club this season before joining up with his country for Olympic duty.

On the international stage, Oscar featured for Brazil at every level from Under 15 – Under 20 before stepping up to the senior side last year. He has turned out for Brazil on six occasions and netted on his last appearance against Argentina, though his most memorable moment for his country so far has been a hat-trick against Portugal in the semi-finals of the Under 20 World Cup in Colombia.

The Prospects

There is no doubt that the Chelsea midfield has both the potential to delight and furiously frustrate Fantasy managers in equal measure next season. Certainly, the 4-2-3-1 shape looks established now and while loan moves for both De Bruyne and Thorgan Hazard have been mooted, the number of options still available to Di Matteo means midfield rotation could bite hard.

Much may depend on how much Di Matteo cedes to the wishes of Roman Abramovich in handing all the marquee names simultaneous starting roles. Considering Eden Hazard was purchased before Di Matteo even penned a full-time contract, it’s fairly apparent that the Russian owner is now intent on seeing his side dazzle – as opposed to grind – their way to silverware. An attacking trident of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar, interchanging positions and wreaking havoc behind Fernando Torres is perhaps the ultimate scenario, though with Marko Marin, Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Yossi Benayoun and possibly Ramires in the mix for the offensive midfield slots, certainty of game time looks an unlikely ally for the vast majority.

Di Matteo has already hinted that Mata is likely to be afforded time off at the start of the season due to back-to-back Euro 2012 and Olympic involvement with Spain – it’s not yet clear whether Oscar will feature in his immediate plans, though bearing in mind that he could feature for Brazil for up to a week before the domestic campaign kicks off on Saturday August 18, the youngster is likely to be gradually introduced to the Stamford Bridge set-up,.

Priced at 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Oscar is far from cheap and looks no more than a punt initially, with Hazard, Marin and Frank Lampard the likely candidates for a double Gameweek 1 which sees the Blues travel to Wigan before hosting Reading. Intriguingly, Oscar comes in at a mere 5.8 in the Sky Sports game – far cheaper than both Mata (8.9) and Hazard (7.7) – and with Chelsea welcoming (NEW, STO, NOR) to the Bridge by the end of Gameweek 7, there’s little doubt their fixtures are enticing. By then, hopefully, there will be a little more clarity over Di Matteo’s selection policy but there would be no surprise if rotation continues to curtail our best-laid plans over the course of the upcoming season and reduce the Blues midfield to a Fantasy manager’s nightmare.

I think FPL will classify Hoilett as a striker again, although I think he will play out wide in midfield.

Could someone please talk me out of playing my WC in GW2?! After several years as a fantasy manager I have found out that a good start is extremely important. As soon as you are trailing you start gambling with your captains and your transfers, and that never works out. And last year I saved my WC until March and ended 6k, the year before I used it in GW3 and ended among the top 600...! Think of a team with 3x chelsea, 3x City, 3x Reading and Vermaelen + Taarabt/Dembele.

I think I've always used my wildcard early, within the first 3-4 gws. This year, I'm determined not to though.

I think if you start panicking and make knee jerk transfers and rash captain choices then you can end up digging yourself in deeper. Although a good start is very important, logically you should be able to catch up providing your gw1 team isn't a total disaster.

I think it comes down to whether you think the pts boost to your team will be greater if the WC is used at the start, or otherwise.

Surely its fair to say that the start of the season is more turbulent and unpredictable team and player performance wise, and that latter parts of the season have more of a settled rhythm?

Although I do not discount your previous experience the fluctuation in performance could be down to a whole host of other reasons, there are too many parameters to say that it was just the timing of your WC that dictated the difference in final position.

Personally, I'm going for a WC in the 2nd half of the season.

All comments appreciated , Thanks in advance.

    KRUL, FEDERICI
RAPHAEL, KOSCIELNY, S. TAYLOR, CUELLAR, MCCARTHY
HAZARD, KAGAWA, BEN ARFA, NOBEL, MALONEY/SNODGRASS
    AGUERO, TORRES, PODOLSKI

I have researched all players numerous times, all look to be fit and starting new season. Raphael slight doubt for first game because of olympics.

    Thanks again

    RMT:

    Federici (Friedel)
    Cole - Hangeland - Demel (Cuellar/Wilson)
Hazard - Kagawa - Sess - Noble (Maloney)
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

    MY FORWARD PLANNING:
I have planned ahead to account for certain situations and good fixtures:

    1. Have 4 players for DGW including Torres who I can upgrade to Rooney with spare 2.0
    2. Friedel has good 1st 5 GWs except for GW 1 which is covered by Federici (who has a DGW)
    3. Have a cheap defence but all have good early fixtures and are good value
    4. If Hazard or Kagawa flops, can straight swap to a Bale or a Siggy who have good fixtures as I said

Alot of people seem to think rotating a 5.0m def & 4.5m def is bad practice but IMO to get the most efficient amount of points surely the price isn't too important. I mean granted it was the second half of last season and my team value had increased but last year I had Mata & Dempsey both on a Home/Away rotation and that worked perfectly. I dont think the idea of rotating 5m defenders should be dismissed as there is alot value in this price range and well worth looking into IMO.

Sup dudes... been a while, thought I'd share a team with possibly the worst defence RMT you've yet to see... yet I'm kinda liking...

    Cech Begovic
    Lescott Demel Gorkss Fonte Tierney
Dempsey Bale Lampard Guthrie El Ahmadi
    Torres Aguero Graham

and of course the obligatory 2mill bull to pig in GW2...

I think he'll be eased in early on.

Also yet to be convinced that Fergie will change the formation for him. Surely Welbeck and Hernandez will get some games (probs easier ones)?

Can Kagawa play CM, if not he could be competing with Valencia, Nani and Young for a place in home games.

Agree. Podolski looks more of a certain starter *at present* but worth monitoring. Some translated comments this morning about a 4-4-2 with Podolski central knocking around but I highly doubt a move away from 4-3-3 for the most part. Wait and see on Arsenal as a whole really while RVP and incomings are sorted.

Hey Tangtastic - I've been weighing up Tevez a bit. I'm thinking even if he quadrupled his minutes - and played them in a similar vein of form - he'd still finish the season a good 40 pts behind his Argentine brethren. All total projection and bluster but I'd say the price difference is about right - and that Aguero is worth the difference.

But then you have to factor in what you do with the extra 2 mil! And that's where my brain gives up...

Kebe doubtful. He has torn his hammy. Out for atleast 2 weeks.

      Torres will start.

No - pretty sure he won't play, especially as they have just signed Michael Turner.

I am not sure that we are all right about this, you know. Barnett could be a contender, under Hughton.

If you want a 4.0 defender and think Norwich is the way to go, I would say Tierney is the best choice.

    Silva Bale Kagawa Taraabt Maloney
    Torres Jelavic Graham

I could go with Hazard instead of Bale to start, then do Hazard->Bale after GW2. But with a crowded CHE midfield, is Hazard sure to start both games? I'm not sure I want to be set on 2 transfers so early if there's a chance Hazard doesn't play both anyway.

I think you need a bit more firepower up front, still not convinced about El Nino

You need a better front line. Upgrade one of Petric/Graham to Rooney/Aguero.

Fund it by downgrading Kagawa and Vertonghen.

Thank you, agreed that my front line is looking pretty poor there, though it's hard to decide who to go for! Rooney should start more games but Aguero IMO will have a better season, hmm

Cole A, Vertonghen and Vidic are all expensive defenders, could get cheaper i.e Rio Ferdinand is 6.
need to get Aguero in no matter what.

Ramiers - risky. Sinclair, meh - better players at cheaper price point. Downgrade to one to Noble and upgrade the other.

      I like Petric though.

Graham is also a risk - Pogrebs?

Lots to change I would say.

Though call. If I had to pick I would say Bale. Definately playing every game, while the other two might get rotated. But maybe you could fit in two of them? If not all three? 😉

You can't really just forget the DGW, so Hazard.

      After GW1, Bale.

Verm out - Chels D in. Arnsenal have a terrible start. Walker to Kaboul? He is carrying a knock and might not start the season.

If Dempsey goes to Liverpool you need to bin him too. Clyne out for Demel until the rough patch for S'Hamton is over and his role is clear.
