Our series of articles focussing on key targets from the promoted clubs continues with a look at one of West Ham’s defensive assets. Hammers centre-half James Tomkins missed a single league game last term and was one of only two players from Sam Allardyce’s side to feature in the npower Championship team of the season, along with midfielder Mark Noble:

The Statistics

A product of the Hammers’ youth academy, Tomkins signed for the club at the age of seven and has worked his way up through the ranks. The centre-half made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign after a spate of injuries handed him a chance and went on to win the Young Hammer of the Year award after making six first-team appearances. Aside from a brief five-week loan spell at Derby the following season, Tomkins has been a one-club man.

The centre-half has struggled with injuries and failed to gain the trust of certain managers over his time at Upton Park; prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival last summer, he had made just 60 league appearances in his first four seasons at the club. Installed alongside Winston Reid at the heart of the Hammers backline, Tomkins – who occasionally featured in a defensive midfield role under the former Bolton boss – was a stand-out performer as Big Sam guided the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt, returning four goals and a couple of assists. In total, he has played 104 league matches, scoring six times and providing three assists, and has represented England at youth level from Under 16 – Under 21.

The Prospects

Costing 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game, Tomkins is pricier than his fellow Hammers defenders in the latter game, with Reid matching his valuation in FPL. His guaranteed game time, however, has helped him pick up plenty of suitors and he is, resultantly, the most popular West Ham defender in both games, despite cheaper alternatives in Allardyce’s backline.

While many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Hammers defence as we look for cut-price rotation options, it’s worth bearing in mind that Allardyce’s side were statistically more impressive away from home in the 2011/12 campaign. Not only did West Ham win more games on the road (13 to 11), they picked up 10 away clean sheets compared to just seven at home and also conceded less goals on their travels (22 v 26). A repeat pattern could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers looking to mainly utilise their Hammers defensive assets at home, perhaps suggesting Jussi Jaaskelainen may be more reliable in FPL due to save points, though Tomkins’ ability to register blocks could prove essential in boosting his EA SPORTS Player Performance Index score and help him pick up bonus.

Tomkins’ involvement with the Great Britain Olympic squad has many worrying over his game time at the start of the season but even if Stuart Pearce’s team reach the final on Saturday August 11, it still gives the defender a full week before the Hammers get their season underway at home to Aston Villa – considering how integral Tomkins was to the team’s defensive performances last term, it seems unlikely this will affect Allardyce’s selection policy.

With (FUL, SUN, SOT) all set to visit Upton Park by the end of Gameweek 8 and trips to Swansea, Norwich and QPR also on the agenda, the Hammers are picking up plenty investment due to what is clearly one of the kindest opening schedules around. If Allardyce can engineer a quick start out the blocks, Tomkins has the potential to immediately flourish and establish himself as one of the best value defenders on offer to Fantasy managers for the season ahead.

    Alright, thoughts on this lot:

    Vorm / Krul
Lescott, Simpson, P Jones, Barnett, Fabio
Dempsey, Noble, Maloney, Hazard, N Dyer
    Torres, Pog, Aguero

Apart from Fabio, it's a bit last season. That might be a very good thing though.

I wouldn't have Barnett, or Pog (he never lived up to the promise of his first 3 games).

      Hazardous Hazard.

      Otherwise very good.

Good input, cheers Teddy. The midfield is completely new and I'm only having Torres with crossed fingers for GW1. Cuellar over Barnett for an extra 0.5 and shuffle a few others?

Just been thinking. I've got Ruddy in my keeper combo, and as no-one else seems to be backing him am just rethinking.

Newcastle are defensively solid, right? Did that start under Hughton? Can we expect similar from Norwich this season?

I do like Newcastle for defence. I am a little skeptical about Barnett and I'm trying to shuffle. What about downgrading Jones to Rafael? I am a little uncertain that Raf will get decent game time.

Yeah, I'm wary of rotation in general at Old Trafford, but i think the defensive injury situation stands Raf and Jonesy both in pretty good stead, at least for the start of the season.

I just think we're seduced into buying the latest preseason, new signing bandwagon every year and then get pjssed off when our mini league rivals bag the points with Lampard, Gerrard, Vermaelen and, I dunno, Leiva or Park or some other journeyman workhorse who is actually guaranteed some pitch time.

hehehe Tevez freed up some space in my defence, anyone object to this? (I know I do a lot of these but this one's a bit different)
    Krul/Migs
Cashley Terry (c) Clichy / Wilson Demel
Siggy Kagawa Pienaar Noble / Maloney
    Tevez Torres (Rooney GW2) Graham
Siggy looking good in pre-season so him over Bale and a 3 strong defence seems so much better to me. What are your opinions?

Quality but wouldn't stick with 2 Chelsea defenders too long, you'll probably transfer 1 for GW3 anyway. Clichy isn't nailed on. Demel I don't know much about but apparently he's not tge toughest.

Suarez has a diabolical first 5 games. And he loves woodwork.
I'm not a fan of Yaya, as I wonder about his positioning.
Kompany feels extravagant. I'd drop to Lescott and switch Rafael to a Chels defender (getting 0.5 from somewhere).

Two Rafael's might cause a stir ... might one be Fabio?

don't think there's any such thing as a must have 5.0 player, they're mainly there to be switched around depending on which cheapie is in good form or has good fixtures, in my opinion. But at the start, I would have noble, as he seems the man most likely due to his set piece duties and fairly consistent goalscoring.

Overall must have, Aguero in my opinion. But i think Nasri could be about to have a huge season after a year to settle in, looked good at the end of the last season..

Rooney is a must-have for me. Even though he has Europe he always seem to be nailed on provided nothing is broken, he's a machine. And he's on pens and some set-pieces in a team where there may be some rotation in midfield, making the striker pick more important. I think with Kagawa's arrival, this could be his highest scoring season yet as he's able to push higher up the pitch.

A lot here banging on about Shaun Maloney as a cheap midfielder, I think it's because he's on free kicks or penalties if he plays and if they get any. Maloney is a Celtic reject and not fit to lace James McCarthy's boots, you can quote me on that! They're the same price in FF.

So guys, any chance of some opinions on this team?

    ------------------Freidel--Federici
    A.Cole--Lescott--Tierney--Demel--Gorkss (or other 3* 4.0 rotation)
    Bale--Dempsey--Ramires--Noble--Guthrie
    -----------Rooney--Aguero--Graham

My main concern is it leaving me nothing in the bank.

Wigan are giant killers with the 3-5-2. SAF said they were unplayable because they were so defensive AND they had 3 CBs in the box. And as we know Wigan scraped a goal and won 1-0. Because it's the first game though Chelsea will come flying out and Wigan should break at some point.

Hello guys, been a while since I've been on here... Just finished making my team so how's this for a first draft?

    Green - Begovic

      Not a big fan of:

Carroll - Where will he be? Will he settle? For 8.5, seems a far punt at the mo.
Yaya - Everyone seems to love this pick, but I'm not feeling it. Too many other players farther up the pitch, for me.
Kaboul - Tot seems a large question mark right now, new manager, new signings (?) and he's so close to a Lescott ...

Need some advice guys. Team is currently a familiar one. 2m in bank for the inevitable torres > rooney

    Jussi (Bego)
    Lescott Cashley Hangeland (Demel Cuellar)
    Noble Hazard Bale Taarabt (Maloney)
    Torres Aguero Graham

My question to you is should I Cuellar > Clyne to free up .5 needed to do Cashley > Vidic/Baines in gw3. If so, who's the better pick. Vidic more consistent cleanies but Baines on set pieces, assists and pens. CHEERS

I'd rather have Vidic than Baines. But I like Cole + Cuellar more because I'd feel comfortable playing either of them against good opposition. I would only play a West Ham defender against poor teams. Maybe that's just me though.

Think ill skip the Torres punt and start with Tevez instead, with the money to bring in Rooney after GW1. I.e. A frontline of Aguero, Tevez and Graham, with 3 million in the bank. If Tevez starts, then upgrade Aguero to Rooney and spread the cash if Tevez does not start, feel sorry you missed out on Torres 4 points...and upgrade to rooney 🙂

    Madness?

It seems that either way you are taking a trade GW2 to get Rooney. Why not just start with Torres then for the DGW. Sure you don't get to pick which city player you want to keep but 90% Chance you should keep aguero anyway since he is nailed on.

      Sense.

Although yet another bugbear of mine is this "Start with X and then bring in Rooney gw2" nonsense.

Rooney has every chance of getting 4 vs Everton and nothing vs Southampton whilst simultaneously City and Chelsea take it in turns to spank QPR and Stoke GW2-4.

Not to mention the fact that there are going to be other problems in your starting line-up and other prospects that emerge as must-have. Basically you need to have the flexibility of not commiting those transfers ahead of time.

I agree with the forced sub issue. That's why I hate the Torres deal.

Tevez just seems more likely to actually fire and you'll be ahead of the curve if you do select him from GW1. That said, I'm as likely to play Aguero/Tevez as I am Aguero/Rooney, but I'm leaning towards taking the chance on Tevez (Ballotelli hattrick coming...)

Very true, week one does usually present problems as something will be wrong in your squad.

You'd want to be fairly confident and not be taking risks with the rest of your squad selections.

Although I should add, that if Tevez starts week one, at 9 million he will practically be a must own and that will be a forced transfer as his price will rocket (although realistically he will still provide value, even if he goes up 0.3 or something).

    i'm already regularly listening to:

    5 live football daily
off the ball / football with john giles
    espn soccernet podcast

    ffs scoutcast
    ballbusters

and if i run out of those:

    epl talk
    subday supplement
    soccer report extra
    si soccer podcast

    and if i'm REALLY bored:

      A by a country mile, I'd say.

IMO Siggy and Rafael are both rotation risks (Siggy less so, perhaps); whereas Bale and Brede are both nailed on, and attacking returns are about equal. Plus, Fulham's fixtures are a helluva lot kinder than United's.

I'm avoiding Rafael because of his involvement in the Brazilian squad. It does depend on whether United get enough cover at CB in order for Jones to play at RB though. For me I would go with Hangeland to be safe. Not sure on the Bale and Siggy scenario at the moment but I suspect Spurs will play a 4-2-3-1 with the 3 attacking mids being more central.

So this afternoon I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the Spurs squad.
Bale is fine, might even get some time in tomorrow's match.
Meanwhile I quizzed Glyfi about his role, and although he was cagey I got the sense that he'll be used in a #10 role. I'm not sure where van der Vaart fits in.

Take it all with a pinch of salt though, but no worries on Bale.
