Our series of articles focussing on key targets from the promoted clubs continues with a look at one of West Ham’s defensive assets. Hammers centre-half James Tomkins missed a single league game last term and was one of only two players from Sam Allardyce’s side to feature in the npower Championship team of the season, along with midfielder Mark Noble:

The Statistics

A product of the Hammers’ youth academy, Tomkins signed for the club at the age of seven and has worked his way up through the ranks. The centre-half made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign after a spate of injuries handed him a chance and went on to win the Young Hammer of the Year award after making six first-team appearances. Aside from a brief five-week loan spell at Derby the following season, Tomkins has been a one-club man.

The centre-half has struggled with injuries and failed to gain the trust of certain managers over his time at Upton Park; prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival last summer, he had made just 60 league appearances in his first four seasons at the club. Installed alongside Winston Reid at the heart of the Hammers backline, Tomkins – who occasionally featured in a defensive midfield role under the former Bolton boss – was a stand-out performer as Big Sam guided the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt, returning four goals and a couple of assists. In total, he has played 104 league matches, scoring six times and providing three assists, and has represented England at youth level from Under 16 – Under 21.

The Prospects

Costing 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game, Tomkins is pricier than his fellow Hammers defenders in the latter game, with Reid matching his valuation in FPL. His guaranteed game time, however, has helped him pick up plenty of suitors and he is, resultantly, the most popular West Ham defender in both games, despite cheaper alternatives in Allardyce’s backline.

While many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Hammers defence as we look for cut-price rotation options, it’s worth bearing in mind that Allardyce’s side were statistically more impressive away from home in the 2011/12 campaign. Not only did West Ham win more games on the road (13 to 11), they picked up 10 away clean sheets compared to just seven at home and also conceded less goals on their travels (22 v 26). A repeat pattern could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers looking to mainly utilise their Hammers defensive assets at home, perhaps suggesting Jussi Jaaskelainen may be more reliable in FPL due to save points, though Tomkins’ ability to register blocks could prove essential in boosting his EA SPORTS Player Performance Index score and help him pick up bonus.

Tomkins’ involvement with the Great Britain Olympic squad has many worrying over his game time at the start of the season but even if Stuart Pearce’s team reach the final on Saturday August 11, it still gives the defender a full week before the Hammers get their season underway at home to Aston Villa – considering how integral Tomkins was to the team’s defensive performances last term, it seems unlikely this will affect Allardyce’s selection policy.

With (FUL, SUN, SOT) all set to visit Upton Park by the end of Gameweek 8 and trips to Swansea, Norwich and QPR also on the agenda, the Hammers are picking up plenty investment due to what is clearly one of the kindest opening schedules around. If Allardyce can engineer a quick start out the blocks, Tomkins has the potential to immediately flourish and establish himself as one of the best value defenders on offer to Fantasy managers for the season ahead.

ok, you might not like this but here goes:
Friedel > Migs (-0.5 but still rotate ok)
Hazard > Kagawa (-1.0, IMO they will score similarly in GW1)
Clichy > Cashley (+0.5 regain the lost DGW cover from Hazard)

      There you go. 🙂

    Cheeky RMT?
Might be tinkering a little too much..

    Friedel, Begovic
    Ivanovic, Gorkss, Clichy, Rafael, Fonte
    Bale, Lampard, Dempsey, Maloney, Noble
    Torres, Pog, Graham

-Tossing up over which Chelsea mid to have GW1
-Had De Gaea/Kaboul but Friedel/Rafael looks cheaper and more appealing at present..
-Had Aguero but now I'm thinking the standard Torres>Rooney GW2
    -Ivanovic>Baines GW3

Thoughts on all of the above?

For starters...get fedrici to rotate with Mign. Reading at least has DGW in week 1. You will play Mign most weeks anyway.

Suarez/Lpool have shit fixt to start off with. Michu/Hazard/Petric have not proven themselves in PL although petric is showing great pre season form. But then again so is boselli!

Rafael is a risk of being rotated. Wait and see i would suggest with him.

        Talk about consistency......

Coming back to Defoe - I expect Spurs to sign a striker soon (before the season starts). Even if they don’t, it will still be risky to get Defoe, because as soon as the striker arrives from the transfer windows Defoe might be relegated to the bench.

Which is the more viable strategy??

1.Go with a strong team in Week 1 and nothing(0.5) in the bank and force urself with a pre-planned strategy from Week 2
    or
2.Go with a slightly weaker team in Week 2, have lots in the bank(3-3.5) and keep ur options open from Week 2

In simple words Aguero or Tevez??

Currently my team is something like this.

        Friedel/Federici

        Ivan/Lescott/Cuellar/Clyne/Gunter

        Hazard/Bale/Pienaar/Taarabt/Maloney

        Aguero/Torres/Graham

Will switch to Rooney downgrading Ivan to Hangeland/Williams in GW3

1 is clearly somewhat proven where as 2 is completed untried. Yet I find myself with 2. Probably due to the hype around Michu & the preseason form of Petric.

You've sold me on Federici. I wrongly thought they,d have a shite defence but they were prety handy at the back in the championship. Hope their defence is fairly decent in h PL. I know those 3 are untested in PL, punting rather than same old same old. Will wait on Rafael but with United's injuries and hopefully Valencia not playing right back he'll be good for a few weeks and establish himself in the team. Tevez is also a rotation risk.
As for Suarez a quality striker wil score home and away no matter what the opposition. He's as big a punt as Petric, Hazard or Michu but one I'll take cos I'm not convinced by Torres (for Chelsea), Bent, Adebayor, Jelavic or Cisse who I could swap him for.

There you have hit it on the head..."a quality striker wil score home and away no matter what the opposition"...you need 2 of Aguero/Rooney/Ade i think. Makes it seasier to get in Rvp when requred as well.

None of your strikers will allow you getting in anyone of Rooney/Kun/Rvp with a straight swap, when they hit form. And they will.

Believe me, there is a big difference between keeping cleanies in the Championship and keeping them in the Prem.

QPR had one of the best Championship defences of recent times but it didn't translate well in the Prem, did it?

Swansea lucked out on signing Vorm when de Vries left them. If de Vries had stayed Swansea wouldn't have gotten anywhere near the clean sheets they got last season. Having Caulker on loan for a season helped massively too.

Point being, I wouldn't read too much into Reading's defensive record in the Championship. You genuinely don't always get punished for making mistakes at Championship level. You get slaughtered in the Prem for making the same mistakes you get away with in the lower leagues.

        +1

It takes a couple of weeks to "unearth" the Vorm/Krul's of every season. Then you need to jump on and build team value and rake in the points. Last year we had a 3rd WC "on the house", so this year will be more tricky.

I'm just hoping I have some of the "little nuggets" early on as I would like to keep back my WC. I can see the pressure building though so might just take it out of the back pocket during one of the Int holidays.

BTW, I think Hughes have realised you need a decent def, especially at home to survive. Qpr should be good value for money at home this season I think.

A cold Melbourne day spent watching Olympic replays and tinkering with my team must sadly come to an end. Any feedback most welcome - I am suffering from indecision relating to Tevez VS Aguero and have gone the former solely to accommodate the very uncommon move of dropping Torres in GW2 for Rooney.
    Anyway here it is:

    Fed (DdG)
    Hang Cole Lescott (Colo Williams)
    Ramires Tarrabt Noble Sigurdsson (Pienaar)
    Tevez Torres Graham

    Any suggestions...?

You could seriously improve your midfield if you just get two rotating defenders for 9.5ish instead of money heavy Williams and Colo

Ah Melbourne. Gotta Love it! Lift Hawkerz!

Well that battle took place for me over a week ago with Kun getting the nod for his nailed onness.

Looks like alot of cash in the backs, 2 x 5m defenders on the pine is a waste. downgrade to upgrade mids.

Hawkerz looking the goods for the flag!

Yeah I thought the backs needed more work - not seeing great value defenders for 4.5 though and trying to cover as many rotations for first 5 GWs as possible

        Tinkering ongoing it seems 🙂

Are we assuming that the clubs effected will try and sort out any possible transfers for Clint/Ade prior to kick off on 18 Aug to get their seasons up and running?

I know there are always some last minute signing on the last day(Eg Berba a couple of seasons ago) but these players like Dempsey and Ade are already in the PL and shirley it can't be that difficult to finalize?

Then again the Berba move was from Spurs to ManU...

RMT out of 10, feel free to be critical and make suggestions

    Friedel - Federici
    Williams - Clichy - Cole - Gunter - Clyne
    Silva - Hazard - Sinclair - Maloney - Britton
    Pogrebnyak - Torres - Aguero

2.0m spare for Torres -> Rooney
I have my reasons for pog as I believe that as the main focal point of Reading's and considering his recent form I am confident that he can be vital for Reading this year and score atleast 10 goals which isn't bad considering his low price.
