Our series of articles focussing on key targets from the promoted clubs continues with a look at one of West Ham’s defensive assets. Hammers centre-half James Tomkins missed a single league game last term and was one of only two players from Sam Allardyce’s side to feature in the npower Championship team of the season, along with midfielder Mark Noble:

The Statistics

A product of the Hammers’ youth academy, Tomkins signed for the club at the age of seven and has worked his way up through the ranks. The centre-half made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign after a spate of injuries handed him a chance and went on to win the Young Hammer of the Year award after making six first-team appearances. Aside from a brief five-week loan spell at Derby the following season, Tomkins has been a one-club man.

The centre-half has struggled with injuries and failed to gain the trust of certain managers over his time at Upton Park; prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival last summer, he had made just 60 league appearances in his first four seasons at the club. Installed alongside Winston Reid at the heart of the Hammers backline, Tomkins – who occasionally featured in a defensive midfield role under the former Bolton boss – was a stand-out performer as Big Sam guided the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt, returning four goals and a couple of assists. In total, he has played 104 league matches, scoring six times and providing three assists, and has represented England at youth level from Under 16 – Under 21.

The Prospects

Costing 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game, Tomkins is pricier than his fellow Hammers defenders in the latter game, with Reid matching his valuation in FPL. His guaranteed game time, however, has helped him pick up plenty of suitors and he is, resultantly, the most popular West Ham defender in both games, despite cheaper alternatives in Allardyce’s backline.

While many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Hammers defence as we look for cut-price rotation options, it’s worth bearing in mind that Allardyce’s side were statistically more impressive away from home in the 2011/12 campaign. Not only did West Ham win more games on the road (13 to 11), they picked up 10 away clean sheets compared to just seven at home and also conceded less goals on their travels (22 v 26). A repeat pattern could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers looking to mainly utilise their Hammers defensive assets at home, perhaps suggesting Jussi Jaaskelainen may be more reliable in FPL due to save points, though Tomkins’ ability to register blocks could prove essential in boosting his EA SPORTS Player Performance Index score and help him pick up bonus.

Tomkins’ involvement with the Great Britain Olympic squad has many worrying over his game time at the start of the season but even if Stuart Pearce’s team reach the final on Saturday August 11, it still gives the defender a full week before the Hammers get their season underway at home to Aston Villa – considering how integral Tomkins was to the team’s defensive performances last term, it seems unlikely this will affect Allardyce’s selection policy.

With (FUL, SUN, SOT) all set to visit Upton Park by the end of Gameweek 8 and trips to Swansea, Norwich and QPR also on the agenda, the Hammers are picking up plenty investment due to what is clearly one of the kindest opening schedules around. If Allardyce can engineer a quick start out the blocks, Tomkins has the potential to immediately flourish and establish himself as one of the best value defenders on offer to Fantasy managers for the season ahead.

    RMT (1-10) please:

    Krul, Cerny

Cole A, Cuellar, Jones, Kaboul, Lescott

    Noble, Silva, Sinclair, Larsson, Taarabt

    Balotelli, Torres, Pogrebnyak

3.mil. in the bank, so Rooney over Torres in GW2

Reckon Balo in starting tim for Manchester City 'cause he's 1st on set pieces, also his so strong like rubber man. Dzeko and Tevez if they doesn sell them will play from the bench.

Big wish is to squeeze Demba Ba over Pogrebnyak after few weeks. Thoughts ?

I reckon newcastle to be in top 5 teams, so krul for the all season, cerny have huge experience, so he can play some games, defence is each player form the best 5 teams, midfield is on set pieces, attack is balo, roon, ba for the long term + 3 mil in the bank for some changes 🙂

Picked Wilson because he rotated well with FUL and SUN but on second inspection, they have horrid fixtures. Might go with Demel. Although WHU's defense isn't as solid, I can pocket an extra 0.5 and they have good fixtures.

Whats the plan for Hoilett once the fixtures dry up? Good looking midfield. Needs more DGW coverage. The team is well planned for the Long term. Why dont you throw in Ivanovic instead of Lescott if you are not going to use too many transfers early on?

Keeping Hoilett. Play him at home to Chelsea with Maloney (STK, FUL), Sinclair (SUN, EVE) and Petric (whm, wig) covering GW 3 and 5.

    or

    hughes, tony v?

if i can be convinced hughes is nailed on, i think i shoulfd go that way, rather have the proven PL fantasy attacker in tony v. though it appears kawaga should start regularly, and may be brilliant in real football, but it may be another modric or silva the year before last where they aide in the buildup but never get on the score sheet.

playing 3 in the back every week means i always have 2 possible fill ins for hughes should he be benched. would much rather have a cheap defender replacing hughes than say Noble replacing Kagawa. Logic or are any convinced Kagawa will come good?

    Lescott/Fabio/Mariappa
    Demps/Silva/Noble/Mata/Maloney
    tevez/Torres + 3.5m(2m for Rooney)

    Bego/Clyne/Cuellar/Graham

Where do I put 1.5m? Noble-->Nolan? Upgrade defence? Maloney-->Larsson/Mclean? Yes tevez is a punt for week 1 & 3, he then becomes Jelavic. Graham becomes ba/cisse in week 9 when swans fix drop and new pick up.

I agree but people are fickle - they remember the short-term impact McLean had and forget that Larsson returned points more or less all season. Can't be bothered to look it up at the moment but I'm pretty sure most of McLean's stats were pretty woeful i.e. don't expect him to perform like that for a whole season. If I break my self imposed no mackem rule I'd be Larsson over McLean for sure.

I'm not very optimistic on Arsenal keeping CSs early on... Not only are our fixtures very difficult but our defence sucks too.

How many years have I heard this... ZzZ..

Potentially losing RVP, but bringing in Podolski, Giroud and possible Sahin and Carzola..

If the above all happen (Including RVP going) then we'll certainly be challenging for trophies.

challenging for trophies 😆 😯 that was 7 years ago.. time and the premier league have moved on.. you could have argued you haven't ever been out of the top 4 but you have to be delusional... the only trophy you will challenge for is the micky mouse or FA cup

This is your standard unrealistic Arsenal fan... The players you have / are going to bring in are pants...

Sunderland, under O Neil is hard.

          Reading should be a win.

Swansea played Arsenal off the park last year.

          Southampton should be a win.

West Ham always did well against Arsenal.

Wigan beat all the big teams at the end of the season last year.

Keeper saves apply to all teams. Are you saying their opponents will gets lots more shots, but the keeper will save them all?

Think you picked me up wrong mate, Mignolet is playing some of those fixtures 🙂 It's a rotation, not planning on play chesny every week, indeed in 1st 6 weeks only twice.

Or to put it another way, you plan to pay 5.5 for a keeper you'll play twice in the first 6 weeks......

Not a bad lot, Pricey as De Gea/Fed to be sure, but I fancy two keepers to be better then playing a single big hitter most weeks.

Are people aware that with all this Torres to Rooney/Ade planned moves going on that they are probably going to have to do it before the GW is actually finished? Same can be said about Chelsea midfielder to Bale

Save 0.5 more than you need to play safe
