Our series of articles focussing on key targets from the promoted clubs continues with a look at one of West Ham’s defensive assets. Hammers centre-half James Tomkins missed a single league game last term and was one of only two players from Sam Allardyce’s side to feature in the npower Championship team of the season, along with midfielder Mark Noble:

The Statistics

A product of the Hammers’ youth academy, Tomkins signed for the club at the age of seven and has worked his way up through the ranks. The centre-half made his debut in the 2007-08 campaign after a spate of injuries handed him a chance and went on to win the Young Hammer of the Year award after making six first-team appearances. Aside from a brief five-week loan spell at Derby the following season, Tomkins has been a one-club man.

The centre-half has struggled with injuries and failed to gain the trust of certain managers over his time at Upton Park; prior to Sam Allardyce’s arrival last summer, he had made just 60 league appearances in his first four seasons at the club. Installed alongside Winston Reid at the heart of the Hammers backline, Tomkins – who occasionally featured in a defensive midfield role under the former Bolton boss – was a stand-out performer as Big Sam guided the club back into the Premier League at the first attempt, returning four goals and a couple of assists. In total, he has played 104 league matches, scoring six times and providing three assists, and has represented England at youth level from Under 16 – Under 21.

The Prospects

Costing 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 4.1 in the Sky Sports game, Tomkins is pricier than his fellow Hammers defenders in the latter game, with Reid matching his valuation in FPL. His guaranteed game time, however, has helped him pick up plenty of suitors and he is, resultantly, the most popular West Ham defender in both games, despite cheaper alternatives in Allardyce’s backline.

While many Fantasy managers are eyeing up the Hammers defence as we look for cut-price rotation options, it’s worth bearing in mind that Allardyce’s side were statistically more impressive away from home in the 2011/12 campaign. Not only did West Ham win more games on the road (13 to 11), they picked up 10 away clean sheets compared to just seven at home and also conceded less goals on their travels (22 v 26). A repeat pattern could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers looking to mainly utilise their Hammers defensive assets at home, perhaps suggesting Jussi Jaaskelainen may be more reliable in FPL due to save points, though Tomkins’ ability to register blocks could prove essential in boosting his EA SPORTS Player Performance Index score and help him pick up bonus.

Tomkins’ involvement with the Great Britain Olympic squad has many worrying over his game time at the start of the season but even if Stuart Pearce’s team reach the final on Saturday August 11, it still gives the defender a full week before the Hammers get their season underway at home to Aston Villa – considering how integral Tomkins was to the team’s defensive performances last term, it seems unlikely this will affect Allardyce’s selection policy.

With (FUL, SUN, SOT) all set to visit Upton Park by the end of Gameweek 8 and trips to Swansea, Norwich and QPR also on the agenda, the Hammers are picking up plenty investment due to what is clearly one of the kindest opening schedules around. If Allardyce can engineer a quick start out the blocks, Tomkins has the potential to immediately flourish and establish himself as one of the best value defenders on offer to Fantasy managers for the season ahead.

The more I think about it, the more I become convinced that defenders from big teams are just not worth the money (perhaps excluding Rafael). The biggest majority of points are lost at the back, and although bigger teams obviously have a higher likelihood of a CS, there is still plenty of value to be had elsewhere with the likes of Hangeland, Cuellar, Newcaslte defence, Fabio all good value you could easily replicate the returns given by a big defender by downgrading to a cheaper defence and using the money in mid and attack which is where most of the big points will come from. I look at it this way. What is more frustrating, losing a CS from a 4-5 million defender or losing one from a 6.5-7 defender. Further what is better, the 6-7 CS or the 4-5 CS?

I agree. But i like to have one big hitter for stability. If Verm/Baines/Vert starts scoring 6pt goals, they'll be hard to resist.

I am not looking at FPL but to me someone like Al-Habsi at 5 represents great value. He may not get many CS (we have to see how they start this season with this new formation of theirs) but he will get plenty of saves (think he was 3rd or 4th last year) and he saved 4 penos. The likes of Hangeland, ShawX, Cuellar, Santon and maybe a Swan (and maybe OOP Clark) could all do as well as a Lescott, Cashley type player. I get the argument about having a big hitter for security, but I think you can take the risk, defenders lose you points more often than they gain them, attackers make you points.

you have to go with what you think is best. I am not saying this is what I will do when I go back on FPL. I'm simply posing the question to see what people have to say.

The answer is quite a lot apparently, this is becoming an epic post.

this is part of the problem, though with Smalling and Evans (and maybe Vida) injured and Rio maybe facing a ban, he should be nailed on for the first few weeks.

As I'm not touching FPL, JT is still in my team, so any debates I raise are just general FPL debates, not related to me. I'm sure not everyone will agree, but that's the beauty. You do get the added security with a big hitter due to the higher CS chances, but you can make it work.

the other issue is that other than Vidic, Evra, Bad K, Hart (assuming City buy some defenders) JT and Cashley, Verm and Vertoinghen, no big hitters are nailed on and I'm not convinced the 6.5 to 7 million outlay is worth it.

this is my point Parm. If Rafa was nailed on, he's a steal at 5.5. That is my plan atm is to have a defence where no one costs more that 5, unless I stick Rafa in at 5.5.

for the first few weeks, you could play a Swan defender, rotate Newc/Sunderland and play Brede, using Fabio to cover off his poor fixtures until QPR's pick up.

I don't think df from the big teams are worth it. Avoiding them will probably (in fact possibly) reduce your chances of a 4pt CS in the first few weeks until you find this year's Swansea Newcastle etc but the 2.5m say from each big defender is the difference between a Rooney and Suarz etc

Your gw score will vary too much as you need that consistent source of points from the back to make a good score that the big 6 defenders provide. Personally think the task is which big hitter to pick at the right time.

No, but I think having one from City/Utd that you're happy playing most matches, and 2 pairs rotating is optimal. Still leaves you buckets of cash to spend elsewhere.

If you're not careful, you can end up with money sitting on the bench given the midfield prices, unless you go super big up top, which has its own pitfalls.

well I am still considering taking a ride on the Rafa train. if you get your defence right you could cover off his rotation. The fact is that bar Vidic and Evra at 7 million no United defender is nailed on, if City sign some defenders the same could be said of them bar Bad K and Hart. This makes Rafa more appealing.

I'm completely with you on Rafa, I think he is outstanding value and although he'll lose some game time to Smalling and even Jones, he is 1st in line for the RB spot, and I expect him to make it largely his.

He is someone I would be happy with as my 'heavy hitter'. Which obviously means even more cash to spend. Atm, the only reason why he isn't in my team is because of early fixtures and Olympics. He will be in earliest opportunity.

These are exactly my thoughts. If you look at the first 10 gameweeks Hangeland and Rangel could easily gain as many points as any of the big hitters. You can then spend this money by bringing in big hitters further up the pitch. My team contains Torres/Aguero/Rooney/Lampard/Hazard. I am also quite happy with my defence.

Liverpool FC has confirmed today that a mole within the corporate communications division has been discovered, located and eliminated. Over the last 24 hours the club has released two bogus news stories indicating that they had accepted bids for two players (Andy Carroll and Alberto Aquilani) and that deals to sell those players were imminent.

In order to locate the errant staff member the club had to portray an act of almost complete fabrication knowing that the source of previous leaks would give away his/her position. The club has become known for its secrecy in transfer dealings and absolutely insists on continuing in this manner. It was therefore essential that the club deceived other staff, fans and press journalists alike to ensure the lie was kept completely confidential.

Jen Chang, Liverpool’s Director of Communications was unavailable for comment, but quickly released a short statement through junior LFC staff – “We apologise to all our fans around the world for the recent confusion surrounding players and transfers. Complete secrecy was required for a successful mole hunt, and we are now happy to confirm normal service resuming. We can categorically say that no deals have been agreed for Andy Carroll or Alberto Aquilani”.

    Federici / jaaskelainen

    Cole / clichy / Rafael / Rangel / Jenkinson

    Bale / toure / Sinclair / noble / Guthrie

    Torrooney / aguero / petric

Have been settled on this for nearly 2 days. I am open to criticism, constructive or other.

I'd have thought there were better options than Sinclair (that said with opening fixtures I'd def want a SWA attacking mid).

Not sure if Clichy is nailed on due to Zaba.

Other than that, I like it. Could be your opening squad for GW1!

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking Jenkinson should play until sagna returns. Sinclair is pricey but got decent returns last year and as you say they have nice fixtures. I hope kolarov moves on to hopefully make clichy nailed on.

      I like your front 3 😉

Keep an eye on Bale's injury concern. Can't see many (any?) CS from your keepers.. plenty of save points though, admittedly.

Sinclair, is the most underpriced player this year based on last season's performances. I'm going to wait and see if he repeats those performances and have gone for Cabaye by a whisker.

Holy jeebees, this team is good! Such anticipation for the campaign to begin!!

    Szczesny (Begovic)
    Zabaleta -- S Taylor -- A Cole (Cuellar / Fabio)
Taarabt -- Arteta -- Cabaye -- Silva (Noble)
    Aguero -- Petric -- Torres

Ramires / Pienaar / Fellaini / Larsson / Hoilett on standby pending starting position / form.

I think Micah Richards is out of favour, and should we see more of Mancini's 3-5-2 then expect to see Kolorav at RWB with Zabaletta on the right.

Fair do's. I'm a bit biased... I dreamt Zabaleta scored in a 4-2 opening day win against Southampton about 2 weeks ago! Would be foolish not to act on it! 😉

Gone with a couple of punts (Raph, Tevez). Pretty unhappy with my keepers though.

    Jaaskelainen---Begovic

    Ivanovic---Raphael---Saylor---Cuellar---Gunter

    Yaya---Mata---Bale---Pienaar---Noble

    Rooney---Tevez---Petric

    any comments would be appreciated.

Also for the DGW who do people fancy, Torres or Hazard. The above is Gameweek 2 team. Will transfer out Bale or Rooney for Hazard or Torres for gameweek 1.

Arteta will be great value if RVP goes. Yaya has been awesome pre-season and City have good early fixtures. Also covering for myself as I'll need City coverage if Tevez doesnt play as much as I'm hoping.

They will be more likely yto sign defenders that is where they are weakest for cover. They will have to shift the deadwood they have in the striker department before they buy more. In addition both Aguero and Tevez have been great for them in pre-season. Aguero was awesome today by all accounts with Tevez not far behind

      7/10

Watch out for Hughes possibly not being nailed on. I guess Ade's on the assumption he moves to Spurs? Don't think you need both him and Bale, maybe Hazard first and then get rid for Bale before Chelsea's blank. Good goalie combo, though no united or city defenders could be a worry. Nice cheap defenders, watch out for Demel being nailed on, otherwise find the extra for Tomkins or just get Mccartney if he's nailed.
