Danny Graham scores three and provides an assist as Swansea put four past Blackpool, while Hugo Rodallega marks his Fulham debut with a goal. Norwich rack up another clean sheet, Yassine El Ghanassy impresses for West Brom with a goal and assist and Billy Sharp find the net for the fifth time this pre-season as Southampton earn a draw at Bristol City…

Swansea 4 Blackpool 2
The visitors arrived at the Liberty Stadium full of confidence after their recent win over Everton but were swept aside by a Danny Graham-inspired Swansea. The forward had a hand in all of his side’s goals, scoring three times and providing an assist for new boy Michu – with a strong opening run of fixtures, Graham’s display will surely bring plenty Fantasy investment ahead of the start of the new campaign. Michu and Nathan Dyer also caught the eye; the latter had three efforts on target, while Dyer produced a pair of assists for Michael Laudrup’s men.

Swansea Starting XI: Vorm (Tremmel 61); Rangel (Richards 61), Chico (Tate 80), Williams, Davies (Bessone 85); Britton (Agustien 74), de Guzman, Michu; Dyer ( Lita 80), Graham (Moore 67), Routledge (Edwards 85).

MK Dons 0 Fulham 1
Martin Jol rolled out an experimental side for last night’s trip to Milton Keynes. Mladen Petric was handed the night off after his recent goalscoring exploits, with fellow new boy Hugo Rodallega afforded his first game time since moving from Wigan this summer. While Marcello Trotta led the line, the Colombian was a threat throughout from his left flank position and had a few chances to find the net; intriguingly he was also on free-kicks, though his place in the overall pecking is uncertain as the Cottagers were far from full-strength. Nevertheless, Rodallega grabbed the headlines and the only goal of the game to serve Fantasy managers a timely reminder of his potential.

Fulham Starting XI: Stockdale; Kelly (Grygera), Burn Baird, Briggs; Na Bangna, Sidwell, Frei (Minkwitz 46), Kasami, Rodallega; Trotta (Kacaniklic)

Hull City 0 Norwich City 0
The Canaries fielded a strong looking line-up for the goalless draw at Hull. While Chris Hughton’s side failed to score, Fantasy managers will be intrigued to see new boy Robert Snodgrass handed a role in “the hole” behind lone forward Grant Holt. Snodgrass was at the heart of much of Norwich’s attacking forays in the first-half, with his set-pieces also teeing up opportunities for his team mates. Despite making a host of changes after the break, Hughton saw his side register their fourth clean sheet in the last five matches as Norwich continue to look far more defensively solid than they were under Paul Lambert last term.

Norwich Starting XI: Ruddy, R. Martin (Vaughan 72), R. Bennett, Turner (Barnett 61), Tierney (Francomb 72); E. Bennett (Lappin 72), Howson (Morison 72), Johnson, Pilkington (C. Martin 72); Snodgrass (Surman 72); Holt (Jackson 72)

Brighton 1 Reading 1
Brian McDermott started with last season’s back-four for the game against a side that had put three past Chelsea at the weekend. With Jimmy Kebe still sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Hal Robson-Kanu was handed a role on the right wing and popped up to score his second goal in back-to-back matches – thus denying Gus Poyet’s side another Premier League scalp. Aside from his goals, Robson-Kanu is clearly impressing his manager right now – he managed the full 90 minutes, while skipper Jobi McAnuff made way for Garath McCleary at half-time on the opposite flank.

Reading Starting XI: Federici (McCarthy 60); Cummings, Gorkss, Pearce, Harte; Robson-Kanu, Guthrie, Leigertwood, McAnuff (McCleary 46); Le Fondre, Pogrebnyak (Hunt 76)

Bristol City 1 Southampton 1
Nigel Adkins continued with his recent tactic of fielding a lone centre forward – this time Saints lined up in a 4-3-3, with Rickie Lambert flanked by Jay Rodriguez and Jason Puncheon. Adam Lallana was, once again, fielded in central midfield while Nathaniel Clyne looks increasingly likely to start the season as the right-back, though he moved to the opposite side of defence as Adkins made three changes at the break. The Saints boss shifted to 4-4-2 as he chased a 1-0 deficit late on and his move paid off, with Lambert setting up Billy Sharp to slot home his fifth goal of pre-season so far.

Southampton Starting XI: K. Davis; Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld (Seaborne 76), Fox (Richardson 46); Ward-Prowse (Cork 46) (Sharp 82), Schneiderlin (S. Davis 46) Lallana (Guly 60), Puncheon, Rodriguez, Lambert.

Hartlepool 1 Newcastle 5
Alan Pardew used last night’s match to hand some of his squad players a starting berth, while also giving a handful of his first-team more game time to build up their match-fitness. While the main news was the return of Hatem Ben Arfa to the Newcastle side for the first time since his Euro 2012 exertions, Sylvain Marveaux was the most impressive on show and could well play a part in the season opener with Spurs if his fellow Frenchman fails to prove his fitness. Playing wide right in a 4-2-3-1, Marveaux scored twice and could well have had a hat-trick if it wasn’t for the display of the opposition keeper. Similar to Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor was also given a 45-minute run-out as he continues his comeback from an Achilles injury.

Newcastle Starting XI: Harper (Alnwick 84); Simpson (Good 73), S Taylor (Ben Arfa 46), Williamson, James Tavernier; Perch (R Taylor 73), Bigirimana (Abeid 60); Marveaux (Obertan 79), Gosling, Amalfitano (Santon 80); Shola Ameobi (Vuckic 46)

Walsall 1 West Brom 3
Yassine El Ghanassy was particularly prominent as the Baggies took their unbeaten run to four matches last night. Inititally starting on the left in a 4-4-2 before switching flanks towards the end of the first-half, the summer signing – in addition to being handed free-kicks and corners – provided a goal and assist for Steve Clarke’s men. Craig Dawson notched in his first game back since starring for Great Britain at the Olympics, while new signing Claudio Yacob featured for the first time since joining the club in the summer transfer window.

West Brom Starting XI: Myhill; B Jones (Gayle 68), Dawson, Tamas, Hurst; Cox (Allan 76), Thorne (O’Neil 76), Yacob (Sawyers 76), El Ghanassy; Wood (Berahino 46), Fortune.

Yeovil 1 Stoke 1
Triallist Sebastien Boenisch was a stand-out performer in Stoke’s second game in as many days. The Polish full-back set up Kenwyne Jones’ equaliser and, impressing with a handful of searching runs down the Potters’ left flank, was unlucky not to find the net with a superb 25-yard effort in the first 45. Peter Crouch missed out with a hip knock, while Matt Etherington added to Tony Pulis’ worries after being forced off early on. Post-match, the club revealed Robert Huth is undergoing tests for suspected meningitis, after the centre-half was hospitalised on Monday.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic, Boenisch, Wilson (Jerome 46), Shawcross, Upson, Shotton, Whelan (Palacios), Whitehead (Arismendi), Etherington (Ness), Jones, Walters.

Been playing around with it a bit -

    Begovic (Cerny)
    A.Cole, Koscielny, Williams (McCartney, Tierny)
    Hazard, VDV, Valencia, Pienaar (Noble)
    Torres, Graham, Aguero

and then swap A.Cole + Torres for Hughes + Rooney after gameweek 1.

    Thoughts?

Would be very grateful for some advice on my team please:

    Krul, Ruddy

Cole A, Coloccini, Vertonghen, McCartney, Cuellar

Mata, Pienaar, Bale, Ben Arfa, Guthrie

    Torres, Pogrebnyak, Aguero

I'm already 0.5m over budget, and I'm not keen on Pog... 🙁 Thank you

Ruddy seems a pointless pick. Doubling up on Newcastle defence is risky.

      Mata will be rotated.

Other than that I like your team but you will have trouble in GW3 with your strikers

Does anyone know anything about this guy and does he affect the Graham bandwagon.

Every time I get on one it stops and so I get off and get on another one and that stops and I then see the previous one shooting off into the distance. Im just going to stop on the one Im on at the moment whatever happens, but can I just check the Boselli bandwagon is due to go off shortly isnt it?

Being Belgian, I know El Ghanassy very well and he does have potential but he also has a big downside. He can be an extreme threat to any defense one day and then completely suck in the next few games. He's quite fragile on a psychological level, always craving attention and support from his coach which makes him a risk imo.

    Ooh an RMT, how exciting

    Federici, Begovic

    Cashley, Lescott, Hangeland, Cuellar, Fonte
    Bale, Hazard, Pienaar, Noble, Maloney
    Torres, Aguero, Pog

£2.5m in bank, earmarked for a Torres -> Rooney.

    A. I want Fonte as I think Soton will be good for cleanies at home. I know their schedule isnt great first up, but if I play Lescott and Cole every week, one of the others should cover it.

    B. Pog. He's the guy I'm most concerned about. Could drop a Maloney or a Noble to a Guthrie and have myself a £6m striker I guess.

My plan is something like leaving 2m in bank and upgrade Torres to Rooney in GW2.
But, I am starting with Tevez instead of Torres. Maybe Tevez/Pogrebynak to somebody with that 4.5m in the following weeks.

Only spend less if you genuinely think you can't improve the side with that money.

Looking at that side, surely you'd rather have Lescott, Ivanovic, Cole, Vidic etc. over Tierney and Demel??

I have very little confidence on Chelsea defense, just like everyone does. No one is going to keep them after their DGW right?
And on City defense, I would prefer wait and see how they fare with their new formation and when everyone is set, I will spend my money and get a nailed on defender. Atm, no one knows who's nailed on for City defense yet.
I think that the 4.5 is very useful to upgrade my midfield and forwards in the following weeks with everyone is planning to WC. I might use my WC in the future and make the full use of it.

Its a good plan I'm doing something similar leaving 3.5 in the bank. This is of course to trade EITHER Tevez or Torres for Rooney early on. I will have a bit left over to help jump on any bandwagons if necessary

    De Gea - Federici

    Clichey - Koscielny - Ivanovic - Colocini - Fonte

Yaya Toue - Mata - Cabaye - Pienaar - Allen

    Aguero - Podolski - Petric

Taking a punt on Podolski and in the long term I think he will come good, especially if he makes his debut against Sunderland I'm liking the chance he'll score there.

And on the same note - who do you think is the best bet for GW 1 and GW2 between:

    1. Lampard
    2. Mata
    3. Hazard

I guess i'm asking who do you think will get the most game time of the three?

      Hazard.

Mata needs a rest after Euros/Olympics so can't see him starting GW1.

And I think Lampard is slightly more likely to be rotated than Hazard, combined with the fact that Hazard plays further forward.

Mata was a peripheral figure in the Euros, and Spain's Olympic run was over before it began. The guy's probably lacking match fitness, hardly needing a rest. If he plays in the CS he's my GW1 (c).

If he plays in the CS, then I'll re-consider of course as that suggests that I'm wrong about the rest.

He's still not had time off all summer. He's been training the entire time and had no time away from the game. He might come straight back to training in which case he should play in CS and GW1 but surely he won't last the season without some break of some sort. And Chelsea will need him to be firing later on in the season, missing the CS and Wigan and Reading isn't the biggest problem in the world.

not going to post the whole team as people will never agree and im not changing the lot, a few things i am undecided on though:

    a) with silva/balo being talked about needing a rest from the euros and also them being linked with agger, would it be best to avoid lescott until gwk3 when transfer deadline has passed, can go for ashley cole over him until then?

    b) pilkington from norwich, 8 goals last season in the equivalent of 2/3rds of teh season, likely to start every game now and 3 of norwich's first 4 fixtures arent bad, worth a punt?

    c) darren bent, not bad first 6 fixtures and easily upgradeable to giroud cisse adebayor etc or downgradeable if he starts poorly. worth going for with lamberts attacking outlook or leave villa alone?

    d) michu - worth a punt from the off or wait and see?

      a. City's fixture look good so I can't see why Lescott wouldn't be a good choice despite the change in formation should it happen

      b. What about McAnuff (REA) at 5.5?

      c. You always know what you are getting with Bent. Always interchangeable with Jelavic or Podolski

      d. Why not considering what's really on offer at that price

      a) Cole is the safe choice, yes.

      b) Worth a punt, though I'm staying clear until I see more of Hughton's side

      c) I'd leave them alone, don't know how Lamert's side will look either. As with Pilks, worht a punt, and easily changeable

      d) No. I've never seen him play, hence I will not select him. Throw a new manager in the mix as well. I'd rather jump on the bandwagon when I've actually seen him play. Rather go McClean for that price.

      a) Think Lescott came back earlier than Silva/Balotelli so don't think that should be too much of a problem. You could wait but I'd want City defensive cover for the first few so think it's worth the gamble. Even if Agger is signed, I still see Lescott as the 2nd best option in City defence, especially if Mancini actually plays this 532.

      b) If he's first choice then yeah he's an option. Lots of options at 6/6.5 though.

      c) I think Villa attack's a good option early on, although I've gone for N'Zog instead of Bent.

      d) Yes he's a punt, but his goals last season and attacking role make him worth a gamble imo.

Anybody else thinking that 3 Chelsea may be too many, even given the double GW?

Could anyone give me some advice on my team?

    Friedel / Federici
    Saylor / Cashley / McCartney / Cuellar / Fonte
    Bale / Yaya / Guthrie / Mata / Noble
    Graham / Aguero / Torres

And the standard 2M for Torres to Rooney.

True but like Kagawa and Hazard, he's not proven in the EPL.

        Any recommended swaps guys?

what is the best choice in your opinion
    a)krul-lescott-vidic
b)hart-vidic and the best 5.5 or 5.0 defender
currently have A but B seems safer

I think A is a REALLY good option. One of the best I've seen.

      Well done
