West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

    3 Questions:

    1. Why the love for McClean over Larsson?
I thought Larsson was nailed on, taking pens and set pieces?

    2. Thoughts on doubling (or even tripling o.O) up on Swansea?
Rangel is a nailed on defender who should get plenty of cleans sheets with their fixture, Michu (or Sinclair) is value and Graham is value and has shown great pre-season form.

    3. Is Kacaniklic nailed-on?
He would save my Petric/Graham dilemma as I can cover Fulham and without Petric 😀

Left wing, extremely predictable, will be easy to scout and push out wider. I'm detecting less returns than last year...if he had played the entire season last year. Larsson is the only chance Sunderland have to score against Arsenal; because it won't be from open play.

      1. I'm going Larsson but a lot of people believe McClean has the potential to really develop and kick on this year and his assists will be boosted if Fletcher signs.

      2. Just no, would prevent you from covering other teams that may do well. People going for Michu - its still a punt - unproven in the Premier League. Graham scored goals last year, so can't knock him.

      3. No idea!

      1. McClean's all round attacking play is better...or rather is more attractive in FPL terms. More chance of bonus and takes more shots on goal. But Larsson is also a great pick due to set pieces and also with a talent for unleashing shots on goals. Tbh pick one and you won't go wrong, but McClean marginally shades it.

      2. Lots of unknowns here. I think one for now and see how they go, but the fixtures are great. Graham is good to start...if they look like keeping clean sheets then Williams or Rangel are worth a go. I'm staying clear of Michu as has no prem league experience. Will get him later if he ends up being good.

      3. Re dilemma go with the proven player at the start...which is Graham, not Petric.

A little bit of "thinking out loud" if anybody is interested.

Ok so Hart is £7m and it's fairly common consensus that you can get a non-playing £4m keeper to rotate with him for a combined cost of £11m.

Szczesny is £5.5m and scored 27 points less than Hart last season in a season where Arsenal underperformed, certainly defensively.

Is it a valid strategy to go Szczesny instead of Hart then? Most will say no with the common thought being that Arsenal's defence is error-prone etc... but I'm not convinced.

Sure, I'd expect more clean sheets from City over the course of the season (or, say over the course of first 19 GWs until WC), but how valuable is that extra £1.5m? It's almost impossible to say because if I were to say that it is the difference between 2 popular picks; Yaya & Bale (55 pts last season), people will say that you can have Hart, £4m & Bale so the 2 are no exclusive.

Something to think about perhaps if searching for a bit of cash... I think it's worth considering, although I think I will probably start the season with a Szczesny/Jussi combination for a bit of insurance.

Yeah, feel free to apply the rationale to Friedel if you like.

Over the course of half a season (until Jan WC), fixtures should be more or less the same difficulty. I suppose what I'm saying is I'm backing the Arsenal defence to improve a bit and Spurs continue to be linked to Lloris / Cesar.

Most people dont want to change keepers, this makes my logic a bit off I guess.. But I agree with u, u could even do Szczesny+4m keeper. Why?
Start off with DDG (better fixtures, looked really solid against Barca). Then transfer your keeper depending on fixtures/form.
      at 5.5 theres at least
      Friedel (or other spurs keeper)
      Szczesny
      Vorm
      Krul
      Howard

I agree without question - Hart, how can he really improve on last season? (of course I know he CAN, but not by much realistically).

Wheres as Szczesny (Arsenal could and should improve at the back with Steve Bould now their coach) and De Gea (if he plays more games, and Vidic is back should = stronger defence) have both got scope to really improve on their points hauls, and cost considerably less when you look at what you could do with the extra money.

The main question for me is (as you have also mentioned) - do you pair them with a 4.5m keeper, or go the whole hog and shoot straight for the 4.0m option?

Yeah, like I say I'll probably go with Jaaskeleinen just because of how good the fit is in GW3 and 5 but I do think it's valid to go with a £4m.

Yes, but the whole point he is making is looking for keepers who have got possible improvement in them this season, and come in at reasonable value.

Hart may very well outscore Szczesny again (probably will), but will he outscore him by enough to justify the extra £1.5m outlay?

Your defence is too strong. you'll need to bench two of Hangeland, Williams and Cuellar every week if you're playing 3 at the back. I'd downgrade one of Hang / Will to a 4.0 benchwarmer and invest the money elsewhere.

      Otherwise, very nice.

Not sold on Begovic but that's probably because I've been stung by Stoke keepers last season. All a bit too mid-priced in midfield for me (3 x £6.5m mid). El Ghannassy - one to watch but tough opening fixtures and a big rotation risk - I'd wait.

Havin some fun here, by creating The Spanish Armada:

    Enrique - Rangel - Ramis - Cuellar
    Silva - Mata - Santi - Michu
Aguero (speaks Spanish / played in La Liga ;)) - Nando

    4.0 GK - Miquel - Crusat - 4.5 F

Little weak at the back, but nice offensive firepower, eh?!

So the 4.5 mids... definitely gona squeeze one in as a bench warmer. And a reading 4.5er is all the more tasty.

But who would you go for in order (taking into account their nailed-on-ness, potential, defensive v offensive positioning etc). If it weren't for the dgw I'd say Kacaniklic... so here are my 5 preferred in order

    Guthrie
    Kanu
    Kac
    El Ahmadi
    Frei

    Friedel / Green
    Baines / Hangeland / Jenkinson / Ivanovic / S.Taylor
    Noble / N'Zogbia / Toure / Pienaar / Michu
    Jelavic / Pogrebnyak / Torres

Jenkinson is just short term until Sagna returns for Arsenal and Torres / Pogrebynak can be reviewed prior to Gameweek 2/3.

I'm just not sure whether Toure and Michu are the best for their money. Any better suggestions?

Also, the value of that squad is £94m which allows me some flexibility to react and invest after the dust settles.

Another approach would be to select no players, leaving £100m in the bank. That would allow you to react to the 2012/13 season when you pick your team next year.

Wow, thanks for your comments. I do appreciate where you are coming from but I don't see the point in spending £100m just because it is there and having some in the bank at the start (albeit I appreciate £6m is a fair lump) allows me to easily trade upwards once the season begins and we know whether Van Persie's hearts is in it, Dempsey is staying at Fulham, Cazorla can justify his price tag, VDV is playing etc etc etc.

Plus, looking at the first ten weeks, I have coverage across the teams with the strongest fixtures (Swansea, West Ham, Villa, Spurs) and have avoided the likes of Southampton, Liverpool and Stoke who have a tricky start. Given the first week's matches, Torres and the Pog have got to be decent shouts. Jelavic should be excellent again. Pienaar likewise. Noble is cheap and takes penalties, Baines, Taylor and Ivanovic offer strong defences and the chance of attacking points, Hangeland a slightly dodgy defence but a shout of attacking scores. Friedel and Green are both from improving teams and their fixtures compliment each other.

As I say, Toure, Michu and N'Zogbia are my real concerns but I don't see much value in the 'big hitters' in midfield. Who? VDV and Siggy not forced to start the season and I fear AVB might adopt a slightly more defensive outlook then Redknapp. Dempsey is a non-starter given we don't really know where he'll be. Silva's form faded towards the end of last season and he has had a busy summer. Walcott has always been inconsistent. Nasri doesn't guarantee gametime. Cazorla is an unknown quantity. Gerrard is injury prone. Mata, Lampard and Hazard aren't all going to play and Di Matteo is quite defensively minded. Bale might be the best bet but he is minty at £9.5m.

Or maybe I'm wrong! I probably am.

As above, I'm not unhappy with my team and have £6m left. The proof of the pudding etc...

Right I've spent my Rooney money so I could have Yaya

    Fed/Friedel

    Ivan/Lolarov(?)/McCartney/Fonte/Cuellar

    Lamps/Bale/Yaya/Taarabt/Noble

    Torres/Aguero/Graham

New plan is to ditch Lamps GW2 (possible after a Torres dgw hattrick min) for someone and then get Rooney or possibly RVP in GW3 for Torres.

Good idea or a bit risky if Rooney/RVP goes mental GW2?

    Hi all,

first time commenter, would greatly appreciate RMT for my first try.

    Federici, Friedal
Lescot, Fonte, Hangerland, A. Ferdinand, McCartney,
    Noble, Kagawa, Gomez, Mata, VDV
    Torres, Aguero, Pogrebnyak

That leaves 2m for Torres > Rooney if needed.

Having just seen Swanseas opening 8 fixtures, I'm feeling Mr Reliable aka Mr Vorm is being unfairly overlooked.

I'd prefer Friedel for the same price.

Will their defence be as good this year?

People looking at attacking players like Graham & Michu rather than defenders who are, perhaps a tad over priced.

Vorm is the same price as Szczesny - you don't get Graham coming in at the same price as Giroud though, or Michu as the same price as Arteta... and therein lies the balance.

Swansea's defenders are cheaper than Vorm, though - usually it's the other way around. Might as well go for, say, Friedel and Williams (5.5 plus 5) rather than Vorm and Dawson (5.5 plus 5 rotation risk).

Vorm gets points for keeper heroics not just clean sheets. Should be the same this year

    Please RMT
    de Gea, Cerny

McAuley, Cuellar, Cole A, Kelly, Gunter
Bale, Mata, Britton, Wright-Phillips, Yaya Toure
    Aguero, Torres, Petric

Thinking about replacing McAuley with a cheaper starting West Brom defender like jones. I have 1 million in the bank
