West Brom boss Steve Clarke moved to boost his up front options earlier this week with the acquisition of Swedish forward Markus Rosenberg on a three-year deal. The 29-year-old arrives at the Hawthorns on a Bosman after his contract with German side Werder Bremen expired earlier this summer and will add plenty of experience to the Baggies ranks, having plied his trade in three of Europe’s main leagues over the last few years:

Rosenberg’s fitness is clearly a major issue for his manager right now ahead of the new season, though. The Swede hasn’t trained since Euro 2012 and is some way behind his team mates – with the new season just over a week away, the Baggies boss warned it may take a little longer to get the forward up to speed:

Markus works hard for the team and his energy levels are fantastic. He joins us after a seven-week break, which is not ideal, so his energy levels are not fantastic at the moment. Playing in the Premier League, no matter where you’ve been, it’s a different league. And all the players we’ve brought in will take a little bit of time to adjust. Markus will take a bit of time physically to catch up with the rest. We’ll work him as hard as we feel necessary between now and the start of the season. But, if he’s not ready then, he’ll be ready when he is.

The Statistics

Rosenberg’s career began in his native country as part of the Malmo youth set-up at the age of five. Working his way through the ranks, he made his debut for the club in 2001 but failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, scoring four goals in 40 appearances over three seasons before moving on loan to Swedish outfit Halmstads. Over the course of a single campaign, the 6 foot 1 forward demonstrated his eye for goal with 14 strikes in 26 league matches seeing him finish the season as top scorer in the division but he again struggled at his parent club in the following campaign – 12 appearances harvested four goals before Ajax came calling in 2005-06 for a fee of €5.3m.

Beginning strongly in his new surroundings, Rosenberg was particularly successful when fielded as part of a front two. His first season produced 12 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances but the purchase of Klass-Jan Huntelaar saw his shifted out to the left flank and the goals and game time subsequently dried up – with only a couple of assists in nine games in the first half of the 2006-07 season, he moved to Werder Bremen in January 2007. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bundesliga club, Rosenberg played 90 league games, scoring 30 times and assisting 14, before a loan spell with Spanish side Racing Santander brought nine goals and an assist from 33 matches. Returning to Bremen last season, he struck up a strong partnership with former Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro and, over the course of 33 league games, scoring 10 and assisted five of his side’s 49 goals.

Rosenberg has featured for his country at Under 21 level nine times, scoring three goals, while his step up to the senior side has harvested six goals from 33 appearances.

The Prospects

Bearing in mind this is Clarke’s first managerial job, the jury may well be out on the Baggies boss until we get a better idea of his tactics and style of play. So far in pre-season, West Brom have utilised 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 but the latter system is far more suited to Rosenberg’s strength and aerial ability and role as a target man.

Certainly, in terms of attacking output, the midlands club can hardly do worse than last season; under Roy Hodgson they scored a mere 21 goals at home and over the course of the 2011/12 campaign, they racked up 45 goals – a tally worse than two of the relegated teams, with a reliance on defensive resilience steering them to top-flight safety. Clarke is keen to improve upon that home record in particular and revealed he plans to go on the offensive at the Hawthorns – a positive sign for Fantasy managers eyeing up the Baggies’ mid-price attacking assets.

In terms of price, Rosenberg is likely to come in around the 6.0 mark in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – the same cost as Shane Long but 1.0 less than Peter Odemwingie, due to the fact that the Nigerian notched double figures (10) last term for the second season running. With the pair coming in at 8.0 and 7.7 in the Sky Sports game respectively, Rosenberg could offer a cheaper route into the Baggies forward line when his price is released in the next few days – considering Odemwingie has been mainly used out wide by Clarke in pre-season so far, the new boy could prove a decent differential if Clarke’s attacking intentions do, indeed, come to fruition.

Rosenberg’s lack of fitness affords us a chance to keep a safe distance initially, then, and assess his side’s form under their new boss as the season gets underway. Looking at the fixture schedule, it’s fair to say Clarke hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts – with home clashes against Merseyside pair Liverpool and Everton added to trips to Spurs and Fulham, a Hawthorns showdown with promoted Reading looks the only real enticing showdown over the first six Gameweeks before their schedule begins to ease a little.

This might be it. What do you think? Siggy, Cazorla & Hazard are all risky players but I have faith in them!

    Jaaskelainen - Begovic

    S Taylor - A Cole - Hangeland (Tierney - Clyne)

Hazard - SIggy - Cazorla - Noble (Ireland)

    Aguero - Jelly - Bent

Aguero Bents like Jelly? Rate it (not the name, the team).

Looks okay. I'd like to ask, yet another, burning question, Tierney or Ryan Bennett?

A couple Norwich fans said Bennett, but the majority here seems to have Tierney for their Norwich defender.

I'll swap them for Mata/Kagawa/Bale/Yaya/Valencia/Nani in case they turn out to be flops. But I suspect that they'll do just fine. Cazorla is a tested player who performed well on international level + great at set pieces (RVP will leave and he'll take the spot) + guaranteed playing time. Hazard is probably more hazardous but I'll stick too him anyways, probably because I don't like Mata that much.

Ur midfield could use another big hitter
Other than that it's really well balanced
+ U could make good use of the Chelse DGW and play torres first week then swap him for Rooney for the extra 2mil in gw2 (Utd vs fulham) And do the lamps bale change in gw3

Would anybody care to run through some pros and cons between the 2 big hitters and 3 cheaper team defensive rotation system, and the 1 big hitter plus 2 x 2 rotation?

I'm currently on 2 x 2, but am very close to shifting to the 3 way cheap rotation.

2 by 2 allows you to trade around the mid priced options a bit more quickly, you can pick up that 4.5er who's suddenly OOP come GW3 for example without changing your team balance very much. On the flipside that player might not fit into your rotation.

3-cheapies-1-spot gives you the insurance of being able to free up funds for moves elsewhere by trading down one of the big boys, you're less tied into a rigid rotational structure, but then it can become psychologically difficult to lose that expensive player and you run the risk of being stuck with a 3.9er...3.8er....and it can be difficult to find a moment to shift the dud and rejig.

Based on the assumption (not gonna happen, but for arguments sake) that you held the same defence for the entire season, I'm thinking that a 2 big boys playing every week, plus the one favourable cheapie each week, would likely score more than 1 big boy, plus 2 mid rangers.

I don't know tbh, we might need Pure Olivia on the case for that one 🙂 The thing I do like about having 2 expensive guys in there is that you can just pick them and not worry, so often when I start getting heavily into defensive rotations it ends up being the away guy who picks up the cleanie.

Three club rotation allows you to look more into the fixture list to find clubs that are potentially better at home that don’t necessary rotate and pair three up to give you a sequence of home games. The other advantage of a three team rotation is that when adopting 1+2+2 the two clubs play the big 6 at home at some point and you have very little option but to play that player in that game week while in a three team rotation you can be more fussy and remove as many of these danger fixtures as possible. The advantage to 1+2+2 is your decision is easier every week and you’re less likely to pick the wrong fixture and leave points on your bench. It also comes out cheaper allowing you to spend more of your budget on attacking players.

Straight from my guide for anyone who joins my cash league. I'm a 2+3 man myself

I've been working on 3 way rotations up to GW22 (jan wildcard) and there's a few to pick from.

WBA/SUN/RDG and NEW/QPR/NOR are the two I like the most

There's also SUN/WHM/SOT that's common round here but I can't see many clean sheets coming from that trio

    Mata,Valencia,Noble,Bale,Santi Carzola

          Im just experimenting of course.
It just seems every season there is a lack of clean sheets and expensive midfielders and forwards always seem to outscore mid priced attackers by more than expensive defenders outscore mid priced ones.
Something I am seriously considering if im honest.

          *sees line-up assumes RMT* 😳

Apologies - easy to get carried away!

I think on balance I prefer the 2 strong forwards, 3 strong midfielders approach - gives more flexibility to jump on players who hit form without major surgery to your team. E.g. if Rooney looks unstoppable but you don't want to lose Aguero it would take two transfers to get there with the line up you posted.

Hard to see the same thing happening where 4 big hitting midfielders are on fire at the same time (possible but less likely than 2 big strikers imo)

I think that this season there is better value at the 6.5 mark in mid than the same price range amongst the forwards. I don;t expect Graham and Petric to both have a good season.

So i am in favout of 2 big hitting forwards. Also because for City, United and Chelsea the only real nailed on attacking options for the season look like forwards. Aguero/Rooney/Toress

Hart + 4.0 keeper (So just Hart every week)

Terry is debatable I guess and almost didn't include him, but for the time being he is nailed on when fit. I wouldn't have Ramires in my team because he might be needed for a defensive role, but I have seen doubt in previous posts so wanted to clarify that he will definitely start most games.

TBH I've always thought that despite a couple of blips at the beginning of last season that De Gea has been a magnificent keeper for United and that most people watching the games he played in last year seemed to miss how many chances our defence gave away last season. All last season it was my opinion that Our defence was getting far too much credit for clean sheets last season. Any keeper facing as many shots as De Gea did last year is bound to make a few mistakes.

To prove my point i've put together these simple stats of DDG and Vorm(a keeper so many were impressed with last year) from last season.

    DDG - 29 games - 13 clean sheets -1 save every 23 mins
    Vorm - 38 games - 14 clean sheets - 1 save every 23 mins

Joe Hart on the other hand, who I felt had a far superior performing defence in front of him last year only had to make 1 save every 34 mins

    Something to think about.....
