In the second of our “Burning Question” articles our contributors attempt the seemingly impossible; to predict the form of Wigan, arguably the most unpredictable team in Premier League history.

Take last season’s exploits, for example. At the end of October 2011, Wigan’s future as a top-flight team looked bleak as they sat bottom of the table, licking their wounds after six successive defeats. By the end of January they were four points adrift of the pack and seemingly down and out but, to Roberto Martinez’s credit, the Latics ushered in one of the top-flight’s greatest ever spring cleans. From March to May the Lancashire outfit notched up seven precious victories and claimed the scalps of some of the Premier League’s biggest names. The 2-1 victory away to Liverpool on March 24 was just the start as, incredibly, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle all succumbed to a rejuvenated Wigan.

The key reason for the change was a shift in formation, using Emerson Boyce and Jean Beausejour as wingbacks in a 3-4-3 in attack that reverted to a 5-4-1 when in defence. This tactic relied heavily on the engines of Boyce and Beausejour and both duly delivered with gutsy and creative displays. Whether they are able to continue their fine form down the flanks this coming season will be crucial to the Latics’ success, as will be the goal scoring form of Franco di Santo, the most likely contender to spearhead the three-pronged attack alongside Shaun Maloney and Chelsea target Victor Moses. The early fixture list has also been reasonably kind (CHE, sot, STO, mun, FUL, sun) with only a couple of giants looming on the horizon for Wigan to bring down to size.

Mark says…
I’d really like to think that they can hit the ground running. Their incredible end of season form, defying the fixture list, was one of my highlights of last season. At one point, with Victor Moses conspiring to ensure I was ridiculed on every turn, I said some rather harsh things about Wigan in the ScoutCast – Granville will remember them well. I went home and felt so awful, I edited my rant before we published. That’s how much I admire Martinez – I’ll happily edit the ScoutCast to be sure not to upset him.

Last season was a pure victory for the likeable Spaniard and his defiant belief in a tactical system and the players he had available to implement it. While he barely registered on the Fantasy richter scale, Jean Beausejour turned out to be a key figure. The accuracy of his crosses from the left was unreal, while the previously ordinary Emmerson Boyce suddenly turned into a source of assists and goals from the right. Even Moses delivered on the potential I’d highlighted earlier in the season, while Franco Di Santo started looking like a centre-forward. I’ve seen a rag-tag bunch of individuals pull off a similar footballing feat before – but that was in Escape to Victory. Even I will hesitate to compare Moses to Pele.

Martinez has managed to hold on to what he’s got and hasn’t upset the applecart with new signings that threaten to re-organise the tactics. A 3-4-3 looks set to remain but the question is – are other teams wise to the approach and ready to counter it? The meet with Chelsea is a classic opening day clash. Previously we’ve seen Wigan hit the day one headlines for the wrong reason but, if they can prove themselves against a Chelsea defence that has looked shaky in pre-season, then bandwagons will start rolling for their home fixtures with Stoke and Fulham. For me, Shaun Maloney looks cheap. If he stays fit he could be outstanding in the budget bracket. It’s a big “if” though.

Anorak says…
The traditional summer pursuit for Dave Whelan’s Wigan has them hawking around their star talent, their headline act that finished the season with such a bang. This so often leaves the Wigan manager to pick up the pieces and prepare the team for another year without their main man. This season’s patsy appears to be Victor Moses, with Chelsea lined up to pay the top dollar. However, even if Moses remains at the DW come September, the departure of midfield enforcer Momo Diamé to West Ham has already set the tone and thinned the squad. I fear Wigan and their conveyor belt of young prospects will have a fight on their hands again.

Granville says…
It seems that every season Wigan start on the back foot, having to re-adjust to the loss of a influential player. Last term it was Charles N’Zogbia, this close season they’ve already lost Momo Diame and Hugo Rodallega and if Chelsea get their way, Victor Moses is about to join the exodus. This all points to a tough start again, although having said that, last term they started with a win and a couple of draws. Initially their fixture list is rather mixed. They play Chelsea and United in the first five games, but either side they have home encounters against poor travellers, Fulham and Stoke. Much will depend on Di Santo and the pre-season free scoring, Mauro Boselli: Jean Beausejour will supply from the flanks, but can they really deliver the goals?

Andy says…
God only knows what Wigan offer us this season. Roberto Martinez managed to get Emmerson Boyce to score two Premier League goals in a game: that miracle alone surely tells us to expect the unexpected. A team with a strike force of the often inept Franco Di Santo, the anonymous Conor Sammon and a catatonic Hugo Rodallega, somehow survived and so it’s hard to question the man at the helm. With Mauro Boselli back in the ranks, Martinez has another source of “hidden” talent to work with. More than likely, though, relegation will finally beckon.

I would say Swansea - Allen are untested under a new manager. All this talk of Everton's usual slow start has made me think things are going to change and have went Pienaar today (instead of Larsson not Michu)

Pienaar and Jelavic are gonna be behind most things that happen at Everton. Even if they lose you know he'll get 2 pts and maybe an assist/goal. Can't say the same for Michu... yet.

You've pretty much answered your own question. Michu is a punt, and Pienaar is slightly less of a punt. I have picked Michu because of fixtures and a sense that he will do something straight away, but I actually think Pienaar is a safer bet because I watched what he did at the end of last season. Choose your poison.

I've gone for De Guzman over Michu and Pienaar. Again he is a punt as you say but I've started him on the bench for the first week. He's looking like their most likely free kick and corner taker and seems a bargain at £6.0mil.....if he starts every game that is

    Last season:

    Bale 3216 minutes, 195 points
    VDV 2314 minutes, 167 points

That's a massive difference in minutes for their scores. Is Rafa being overlooked?

I realise a chunk of the difference in minutes is due to VDV being subbed off early in games but, when fit, VDV was a better option. Yes, he will get injured at some point and cost a transfer but I'm tempted to go with him. He has started both seasons at Spurs in great form before tailing off.

Redknapp also wasn't overly keen on the fact that in his opinion VDV didn't track back enough so would often pull him off early. He could be a great option this year.

I think his minutes will relate to more than fitness. Bale, it looks like, will play whenever he is fit, while VDV has Siggy to contend with and will again likely not play as much. So he might be more efficient, but still not get you as many points.

I was thinking I might start with VDV with the expectation of him scoring more than Bale while fit and then ditching him as soon as injury strikes. Assuming he doesn't pick up injury problems, Bale will probably score more points over the season but there's nothing like having players on a hot run of form like VDV early on in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

I'm surprised how many people are overlooking the fact that Bale went like 15 games without scoring at the end of last season. I might wait a week or 2 and see how our midfield lines up before getting one of them. I agree Bale will end up with more points this season but VDV will have the higher PPG.

S'up chaps, just wondering if anyone can take a few seconds to look at my starting team for this season's FPL and let me know any changes you'd make! I just think it's a very strong team and fail to see any obvious weaknesses in it! In total it costs £98mil

    GK: Federici
    DEF: Harte Cahill Clichy
    MID: Arteta Silva Noble Cabaye
    ST: Torres (C) Aguero Pogrebnyak
SUBS: De Gea De Guzman McCartney Clyne

As you can see my intentions are to take full advantage of the initial double gameweek with Federici Harte Cahill Pogrebnyak and Torres. I will however be swapping Torres out for Rooney after the first gameweek and have £2mil saved for that!
    Thanks

DDG is obviously going to be my keeper choice long term just think Everton away is a tricky fixture and love a punt at a double gameweek eve if they're not favourites! I did have Larsson in for Arteta and Lescott in for Clichy but then switched, I'm still unsure. Clichy really turned it on the back end of last season and got 5 assists to Lescott's 2 goals and 1 assist. I'd love to be able to put Richards in but he just doesn't play every game.

The Pog isn't a long term option for me, I'm only putting him in for the double gameweek Reading start with. My thinking with Arteta is though...If RVP goes, Arteta will be on all penalties free kicks and corners and is also capable of shooting from distance and providing assists. I think he's a dark horse to shine this season. Larsson is another option I was thinking of but we'll wait on the future of RVP!

VDV - Takes corners free kicks and penalties.
Lampard - Same reason and proven in the premier league, Hazard too much of a gamble to start with.
Aguero - I initially had Tevez but with Balotelli's performance in the Euros he's likely to challenge Tevez whereas Aguero is guaranteed starts.
Torres - I've put Torres in as captain for the first week and kept £2.0mil in the bank and will change him for Rooney after the first week! Everton away is a tough starting fixture.

wudnt say balotelli had good performance in euros.. 3 goals from 2 games, 1 against ireland who were the worst defensive team at the euros ( and im irish) and 2 good goals against germany in semis.. take with that the amount he fluffed in every other game (espeically against england) and was dropped from startin lineup for irish game..

      Bale

Lampard but both are risky and I would personally avoid the Chelsea midfield for a bit.

Aguero to begin with unless you need the 2.5m and can spend it well, which i can't seem to.

Torres obviously, but then Rooney most likely.

I like the look of that a lot, actually.

If I had to be very picky, I'd probably point out that having no Manchester defensive cover might hurt you but the money you've saved seems to have gone to good use in midfield and attack. Having said that, I'm personally trying to avoid having 2 cheapies in my midfield.

      Counter arguments to those

      - for a promoted, defensive minded team
      - makes him difficult to transfer out
      - his record before going to Fulham was awful
      - scored 5 goals in 3 then 1 in 9 (or something like that)
      - sits on Russia's bench. Pav and Kerzakhov are favoured over him and they're hardly spectacular
      - what was his contribution? Plenty of poor players have won more prestigious competitions

To put it simply, I think he's crap.

But he is £5m. Graham is £1m mire expensive. That money can be used elsewhere and I really don't see Graham/Petric being worth the extra money. I plan on rotating Pog with Noble. It allows me to have a more expensive 4th midfield and stay away from the dirt cheap 2 midfield rotting players or Guithre.

I think he will score 10-15 goals thus season and will be a FF bargain.

Fixtures unappealing after week 1, plays for a promoted team unlikely to score that many goals, no one else in the 5m category to do a straight swap to so likely to have to take a hit to ship him out, no fixture week 3 an extra 1m gets you a striker with decent fixtures, no im not sure why people are against having him either!!!

Agreed, though 10 points could be the difference between 500,000 places so I wouldn't place much importance on the GW1 rank

that would be a fantastic start.

Thing is, we really are up against 2 million people in GW1. As the season wears on, less managers are making their weekly changes and it gets progressively easier to get a good GW rank. I'll take anything inside the top 500k for GW1 this season after my disastrous beginning to last term...

Last season overall ranks for me:

      GW1: 1,165,387
      GW5: 902,694
      GW10: 22,289

Shows how quickly it moves early on

Last years winner rank after the 1 st week was 600k+, Marathon not a sprint.. ; p. It has made me look at things in a totally different light for this season. None of the silly knee jerking that caused me so many problems early on.

GW1 is so unreliable as an indicator this year with it being a DGW too. A lot of casuals might see that and double/treble up on Chelsea and be screwed come GW3.

As have been said; it's a marathon not a sprint.

          Good question, let me check....

          At the moment i have:
          Friedel/Federici
          Demel Clichy Ivanovic Coloccini Clyne

tbh i haven't even looked at my team for a few days and certainly haven't sat down to sort it out properly. I can't see the point in doing it till Thursday/Friday next week when the projected starting line ups take shape

I do agree. I've had a team since day one which Ive been half heartedly tinkering with but until the last few days everything is still up in the air. I think I've transferred in/out pretty much every player that might be in my team this season.

Graham Beecroft has just reported on Liverpool's game. He said Suarez was brilliant and his link up play with Stevie G was very impressive. Gerrad played a more forward role in front of the 3 midfielders and looked really sharp. Food for thought 😉
