With two days until the season kick-off, Robin Van Persie’s future appears to have been decided with the announcement that Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester United.

The official statement arrived this evening from Arsenal and United have also offered confirmation of the move, subject to a medical.

This is obviously momentous news on the eve of the Premier League and Fantasy season. Undoubtedly the biggest move of the summer transfer window so far, the Dutchman’s move to Old Trafford is – from a Fantasy perspective – arguably the most significant transfer since Cristiano Ronaldo left the Old Trafford club for Real Madrid in 2009:

Sir Alex Ferguson’s acquisition of the former Gunners skipper hands United a lethal looking frontline as they look to wrestle the title back from neighbours City. The two top scoring players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in 2011/12, Van Persie and Rooney – with 269 and 230 points respectively – will surely rack up goals aplenty but, with either of the two more than capable of accruing huge points hauls to the other’s detriment in any given Gameweek, we are left with an unwanted armband dilemma as the Fantasy landscape around us is altered irrevocably.

Quite how Van Persie will fit into the pecking order in terms of set-pieces and spot-kicks is a crucial factor which will be keenly anticipated by Fantasy managers – if Rooney continues as the number one for penalties, the Dutchman’s stock will clearly drop in our estimations, with a tussle for bonus also a significant factor is how we invest in the United frontline. The Fantasy popularity of new boy Shinji Kagawa perhaps now looks a little less appealing until a clearer picture of the situation at Old Trafford, in terms of tactics and the likelihood of rotation, is established.

Over at the Emirates, Van Persie’s departure is surely set to boost the long-term appeal of new signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. The Gunners’ French-based scout Gilles Grimandi admitted only last month that Giroud was signed from Montpellier in anticipation of Van Persie leaving – a central role looks likely for the Frenchman, then, but with Wenger conceding his summer signings will be eased into action in the season ahead, their initial impact is perhaps questionable. Despite this, it seems Podolski, at least, is set to start against Sunderland on Saturday as the Gunners gear up for action without their former skipper.

Fellow new-boy Santi Cazorla, though, now looks the most likely Gunner to benefit in terms of set-pieces; potentially, he should be handed corners and free-kicks, while the issue of spot-kicks looks up for grabs – Podolski scored from the spot on Sunday, though it’s worth noting that Mikel Arteta didn’t feature in the 4-0 win over Cologne.

We’ll have more on the full impact of the Van Persie move and its knock-on effects for both sides in a more substantial Moving Target later.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So Mata not even in the squad for Spain. Do we think he is likely to get more game time than Lampard in GW1?

In the recent friendlies he's been playing in the hole, plus he's got set pieces. Fitness is my biggest worry. Seems a big game player - also they had such a bad attack under the last manager that I only see the way as up now under the new one.

Liking this team. Big and bold up front but not at the expense of the team.

Marveaux is some kind of sick joke though. Better options at £4.5m

Lampard, even Ramires over Gerrard with the DGW surely.

Ha I wouldn't waste a squad spot on Marveaux for nothing! According to China Mag he will be starting due to injuries to Barfa etc., he's very well rated and versatile.

Not sold on getting a Chelsea midfielder for the DGW - I'm covered in defence and attack anyway.

Ah yeah Newcastle not looking too clever for their first game. Not bad for bench fodder then.

2 Chelsea will probably suffice. We know what usually happens when we go DGW crazy.

It's a team for beyond GW1 - Chelsea haven't looked that great actually and Mata was very subdued in the shield even before the sending off. My impression of watching him for a while is that he is more of a passer than a threat. Gerrard's playing in the hole, completely nailed on and a very well known threat.

I have to agree. Like Gerrard and sure he will do well but with City, Arsenal and Utd in the first 5 GW I'd go for a spurs mid until their fixtures improve.]

I'm not keen on the midfield. There's question marks about Marveaux and Maloney's gametime and Gerrard has terrible fixtures. Would prefer a Chelsea mid in there. Jenkinson won't play many games and Arsenal's early fixtures don't look great for clean sheets.

Yeah Marveaux is a short-term punt, Maloney is subject to Moses leaving (letting Miyaichi replace Moses instead of challenging Maloney). Could downgrade Jenkinson to a boring Demel and upgrade Marveaux to Noble or Maloney to Beausejour, but I see lots of potential threat in the midfield.

I know you should never bring bias or allegiances into FPL but I really am going to struggle to let RVP near my team.

Besides that I don't think he will live up to a 13.0m price tag with goals assists far more spread out than last season!

Some of the Gooners on here need to man up… Focus on who you bought, not who you sold, you have a great team, a great stadium, a great manager, you’re playing in Europe and have so much to look forward to. You try supporting a club with no chance of winning anything, just relegated, run by clowns and selling EVERY player that anyone wants…. you are so used to relative success you have lost track of the real world that faces most football fans.. and there are many worse off than us, Pompey, Wimbledon, Rangers etc and you cry like beaten pups because you sold a class player with a year left on his contract… pathetic.

Most of the Clubs you mention brought their plights on themselves through mismanagement. Arsenal just lost their captain, talisman and hero to their bitterest rivals, we have every right to be gutted. It hurts a lot more when you have been used to success and then have a difficult period (especially coming so close so many times). It's a lot easier when your club is a small one and you don't expect much from them

Football is football, we shouldn't be upset at losing a world class player just because other clubs are in a worse position? Our club would be better with this certain player so why wouldn't we want Arsenal to be as good as possible..

Wasn't just a class player. Was an Arsenal legend so it's very difficult to take. Especially with the past history between the two clubs.

Torres still has not been subbed in the Spain v P Rico game over an hour gone.

Thrilled from a fan point of view, although I would have rather seen this money spent on CM and another LB.

As far as fantasy is concerned, I am still going for Torres(+2M), Aguero and Graham. If it becomes apparent that RVP is needed over Rooney then I will go with Rafael + Lescott as defensive biggies over Vidic + Lescott, my mid is pants enough as it is.

Now, what on earth do I do with Kagawa in my team... ditch or keep and see how things go

I definitely think it is worth keeping on with how you are going, I'm personally sticking with Kagawa I dont see SAF ignoring how he has done over the pre-season, and he has been the main buy before RVP. He is gonna be the one slipping Rooney and RVP in.

Otherwise for now see how it goes after GW1 and then change it from there.

I swore I wasnt going to piss away my early WC. Now I may no option but to use in GW3 over international break as I am sure what ever I pick now will go tits up, there are so many paths I can pick for FPL that the wrong one is inevitable.

I am thinking of shoving Yaya in there, and then maybe playing WC early again

Unfortunately that may have to be the option, unless something dramatically changes and we did really well somehow with our picks.
Yaya is a worthy punt for sure. Your team was looking the same as mine wasnt it? Roughly anyways.
