Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

I have Pienaar and am quite happy with him. Fellaini is a man for the big occasion slightly more so than Pienaar, but Pienaar is a week in week out kind of player. Had him from gameweek 30 onwards last season and he got me a bucketload of points, and at 6.5 he was one of the first names on my teamsheet this time round.
Was very lively against united monday night, and was so unlucky not to score (great DDG save that Pienaar bent a shot around Carrick)

Pienaar hoovered up a fair few assists last season with set-pieces on the left which Gibson has taken over on (assisted Fellaini too). I have him but am worried about his involvement now despite being an excellent player and in a very good team. At £6.5m he is decent value but I don't expect much more than 4/5 goals, 8/9 assists this season now which ultimately will disappoint.

I think more like 7/8 goals and 10/11 assists, add in 15 odd BPs and you have yourself a season keeper. He works like a trojan too which goes unnoticed, so he will have succesful tackles and recoveries which will add to his PPI. Gibson wont play as regularily I dont think, so Pienaar will have some set pieces.

Hey SBT, would u prefer Pienaar then or Lennon for the next 3 or 4 game weeks?? Lennon is seriously tempting at home, especially with Everton have 2 in a row away....

I have Bale as Spurs coverage, would prefer him to Lennon, but a straight pick between Lennon and Pienaar for 3/4 wweks prob Lennon, Pienaar has 3 away games all tricky.

Well the player would have to have a double price rise before it has a positive effect on your team value, so I generally don't chase rises unless I really want the player.

However, just one decrease and it messes up your whole team.

I already used my free transfer on Tuesday to avoid the Aguero decrease, but now I have Mata, Torres and Ferdinand who may drop before GW2. That would totally screw me up.

Well my reasoning behind B is that Mata is having to cover for Lampard when he makes his runs forward and as a result, he is being overshadowed. So I think Mata out is more of a priority. For Torres, well, there is hope! Plus Kagawa looks sharp and not sure how RVP will fit in!

Revisiting why i kind of have a bad feeling getting Tevez in at 9.6-9.8 GW8. Correct it is, playing for points! Definitely not worth a hit now correct? Downgrading Torres to him for 4 pts?

I don’t think so personally. Will get Tevez/Ade for him GW3 is the smart and patient thing to do correct?

Thanks for the replies. Just wanted to know if i wasn’t the only one who just did not feel right getting a player at a much higher value then everyone else.

    DDG, Federici
    Ivanovis, Zabaleta, Hangeland, Cuellar, Demel
    Mata, Silva, Bale, Taarabt, Noble
    Torres, Tevez, Graham

So here’s the thing, i want Michu, Kagawa and Adebayor. Was thinking of doing Mata > Kag and Taarabt to Michu this week( 4 point hit), or is it worth a hit?

And Torres to Adeybayor next week, what do you's think?

Fellaini finished last season with 6 and Pienaar with 12 (although only really playing January onwards for Everton since he wasn't playing at Spurs). Got to be Pienaar then.

Fellaini may play the 'Cahill position' a few times as he did against Man U, but in a 4-4-2 he'll be CM. But he should improve in last season's score imho

I really, really see Kagawa scoring this weekend vs Fulham
1 - He looked pretty good for his first match and that was against a really strong Everton defense
2 - His movement with the ball is outstanding
3 - I know it's early, but his connection with Rooney seems to be spot on
4 - We're playing at OT, and the whole team will want to put up a good result on the board
5 - Kagawa WILL score for his home debut
    6 - I do not own him

not number 3 - his connection with rooney consisted of him looking up to expect Rooney to be in position and find him sadly not. Rooney needs to pick up the pace at home next game to meet the high standards Kagawa sets.

unlikely to be starting any time soon, he was a small money purchase so Sir Alex has no pressure to do so either. I feel this was a punt by Sir Alex, low risk with a small chance of a high reward. Maybe Sir Alex will move Evra to CB until Evans or someone else is back and put Buttner at LB, but I dont see it happening.

It will take a while 'til he actually gets a proper game but I tell you, it's not totally out of the question considering how poor Evra has been. However, it is unlikely considering Buttner is a work in progress and Fergie will favour Evra's experience.

I doubt, but I think he will get the odd start since he was bought as cover for LB and Evra's performances haven't been that inspiring. Plus Evra can do with the rest, he pretty much plays that position all the time, all games like A. Cole does for Chelsea.

Was just about to pose the same question.

It probably will be Ade + Hazard, but only when we see that Ade is starting and with Chelsea blank in GW3 this won't be until GW4.

I currently have Mata + Torres, and will almost certainly end up with Bale + Torres later today. Would prefer to carry over and have 2 free transfers next week, but Mata will drop in price tonight.
