Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

There are certain questions that are being asked every 5 minutes. A ton of these are very simple to answer IMO, so let's stop spamming the comments with them!!

    A) How do I track price changes????
    http://www.fiso.co.uk/crackthecode.php
    http://development.totalfpl.com/pricechanges

    B) Is INSERT PLAYER NAME HERE rising/falling tonight?
See above. If they give different answers, go with TotalFPL for now.

    C) Will Adebayor start this week?
A club signs a striker three days before a league match. They immediately start him over their existing striker who has been training with them all preseason and has just scored for them. It doesn't sound very plausible, so stop letting the name "Adebayor" mess with your head.

    D) Should I play my wildcard?
If you have used this site at all your squad is extremely unlikely to be bad enough to need a wildcard after 1 week. NO!!!!!!

    E) Should I sell Aguero?
Let's look at the facts, he is going to miss a couple of matches at least, he could well drop to 11.0, he's taking loads of value out of your squad, and your alternatives in the meantime include Tevez, Rooney, RVP and Adebayor a bit later. It's not a question of should you sell Aguero, it's who should you replace him with.

Enjoyed your Chelsea analysis by the way. Particularly about Mata being the new Modric, the assister of the assist. Very worrying for his owners and enough for me to ditch very swiftly. I'll be looking Hazard as my long term Chelsea pick.

Cheers Jonty, I had a dig through the compare tool and compared Mata this season against Mata last season. Definitely playing further back. Interestingly, positionally the change already seems to have started in the last 6 matches of last season. Hazard is playing somewhat further forward and looking at his passing he plays a lot more passes from the flanks. Might be an example of what has recently been dubbed a "central winger" - someone who starts near the centre and moves into space in the corners.

These players like Modric are the ones we need to keep an eye on where in real life they are incredible but in FPL complete pants.

I'm currently debating whether Kagawa will be Man Utd's Modric....need more stats, but may just put my balls on the line and get him anyway.

Same here, Kagawa could really go two ways IMO, he could either end up stuck deep or playing as part of a dynamic central three with Rooney and RVP! He is troubling me in the back of my head, but I'm more inclined to go Dyer/Michu and RVP/Rooney

There's a piece on zonal marking today about the Man Utd formation, which looks like they are looking to copy the old Inter Milan formation of having a fluid front three with Kagawa as a number 10 dropping in and out and feeding them, with two central midfielders staying back

during the everton game it was something like this

              Welbeck/RVP - Rooney - Nani
              .................Kagawa................
              .........CM..................CM
(with RVP/Welbeck and Rooney switching roles frequently)

Ah yeah, Kagawa playing the Sneijder role.

It was like that in the Everton game and also I remember at one stage RVP switched with Nani to play on the right (even more fluid!) and played a cutback to Kagawa, one-on-one about 10 yards out. Could have been a goal, didn't get much coverage from most outlets who said RVP did nothing on his debut.

I'm kind of at the stage where if I see one more sign in favour of Kagawa I might get him.

Mata is incomparable to Modric. Modric plays as a central midfielder in a duo. Mata plays as an offensive midfielder in a trio. Mata has earlier performed extremely well in front of goal both in terms of assists and goals. Modric has never performed the same way in front of goal. Mata is great at set plays. Modric is not. Incomparable players.

I hear you, and that is consistent, see above, it looks like his role starting changing at the end of last year. Before that he was often playing in the hole or on the flank and getting scores that Modric never would. Increasingly in terms of behaviour he is approaching Modric now.

the comparison is that Modric was often the creator who assisted the assist. Mata in the last two games has also performed that role, playing in a central role and passing to the likes of Hazard who fulfil the crucial pass that Mata used to give.

This is a different season and yes they are completely different players but its a good comparison because they are both great players who, so it appears in Mata's case, are not great for FPL scores - which are heavily reliant on goals and assists.

      Another one for the FAQ's...

      Rooney or RVP?

      Answer: nobody really knows but...

Rooney more nailed on but off form and may play deeper, probably on pens (not guaranteed!)

RVP not fully match fit, may not start (or may be subbed early) but, if he plays, is likely to be the main striker

      Now, MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION!!

A question about the 0.3 price rise cap.

Suppose Michu goes up tonight, and then by the numbers, he should have gone up again tomorrow night and again Friday night. By the time Saturday night comes, will he go up by 0.3 in a single night? Or will it be 0.1 on each of Saturday, Sunday and Monday?

As people start getting attracted to the price rises more and more, couldn't he go up like the price of tulips back in the day or the price of dotcom stocks at the turn of the millennium?

Any transfers above the 0.3m price rise cap will be lost on Saturday night when he should go up 0.1. It will then reset back to 0 so only 1 price rise I think.

I think it starts again that game week..but if lots of transfers come in friday night, there's a good chance they'll continue into the next saturday as well so very often a player will go up again swiftly.

He will only go up once and then it'll be reset again, the benchmark raised and he'll need even more to go up 0.2 and then even more for 0.3.

Number 1 thing I've learned from this site. Stay patient. Do not kneejerk. Everyone freaks out when a player they have doesn't perform- you got that player for a reason. Gauge his production over a 3-4 GW span to determine his value to your team. I know a lot of people are going to regret ridding of torres

Two interviews here, one is the shorter, sweeter version. The other is the full interview. It is the Irish president, Michael D Higgins vs Michael Graham, a Tea Party lover back in 2010. Absolute gem, respect for MD has increased even further!

I know for a fact one guy in ML got him on Sunday morning, not because he felt he was a must-have, though he is expecting some benefit, but because he suspected that his price would sky rocket, so he bought him at 6.5 to get in on it. Any points he gets is a bonus, he just wanted to get him before he started this ridiculous price rise.

Evening gents. A miserable opening (as usual) fantasy-wise, but the pain is partly dented by Chelsea and, of course, Hazard's opening to the season.

I'm guessing he will be a must-have post GW4 if he keeps up this kind of form...

Thoughts on my team for GW2 guys

    DDG (Federici)

    Cuellar Zabaleta ColeA

    Yaya Bale(vc) Michu(c) Maloney (Piennar)

    Petric Tevez RVP

Left with none in the bank. Planned Torres-->RVP because I had 3m in the bank saved 😀
Should I go with Rooney or RVP?

I'm probably going to end up going safe (Rooney) unless SAF tells us straight out that RVP will start this weekend.

Good team, who are your subs at the back? And don't be fooled by Michu, still unproven. Cap RVP over him every day of the week.

Neither yet. RVP not fit, not sure where he's playing. Roon was poor. Granted, he may play better at home, but Man U just don't have the fluidity yet. Fulham will be up for this one.

NUFC team playing in Athens tonight: Harper; Tavernier, Perch, Williamson (c), R Taylor; Bigirimana, Anita; Obertan, Gosling, Marveaux; Cisse.

Our starting X1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday will be fresher than Chelsea's, unless they play squad players.
