Sunderland’s 23-year-old Irish winger James McClean proved to be one of the revelations of the 2011/12 season. After impressing new Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill  during training last December, this bench warmer was swiftly promoted from the reserves to the first-team. He made his first start for the Black Cats in their 1-0 victory over Manchester City on New Year’s Day and just two days later scored his first senior goal as Sunderland thrashed Wigan 4-1. It was to be the first of five goals over the second half of the season that saw the winger assist a further three and register 101 pts.

Already this year McClean has hit the ground running, earning maximum bonus during Sunderland’s opening game away to Arsenal with an EA Sports Index PPI of 14 indicative of his suitability to the scoring system. This suggests his style of fearless, attacking wing play will rack up far more bonus points over the season and replicate or perhaps surpass last term’s bonus haul of 18, bearing in mind that was accrued over just 20 starts.

After starting the previous campaign at just 4.5m in FPL, the winger has been priced higher at 6.5, while the Sky Sports game have handed him a price tag of 5.9m. This still represents something of a bargain for a player that is clearly earmarked for regular starts by O’Neill this season and as a result has earned a deserved place on our watchlist. O’Neill said:

“The fantastic thing about him is his capacity for hard work. I could play full-back behind him.”

In addition the Sunderland manager has indicated he plans to shift McClean from his usual left wing role to the right to help him develop as a player. O’Neill added:

“I genuinely don’t think it’s tough for him to learn to play on the right. He’s capable of cutting inside on people and showing that type of spark. I’ve tried him on the right-hand side where I think he can play pretty adeptly. And we’ll continue to try to shift him around and see how he does. The best way for him to learn is for him to play for 10 or 15 minutes in those positions.”

Fixtures have fallen kindly for Sunderland (RDG, swa, LIV, whm, WIG, mci) and McClean looks a strong mid-price midfield option, especially at home, for the coming weeks. McClean is also an appealing differential, with just 3.4% of FPL ownership – while his midfield colleague Seb Larsson (6.5m in the FPL game but at 6.2m in the Sky Sports game) enjoys three times as many FPL owners due to his seven goals and four assists last season, it’s worth noting he played 850 more minutes than McClean, though the Swede’s spot-kick duties add to his appeal.

According to media speculation, Sunderland are among a number of Premier League clubs interested in Manchester City winger Adam Johnson ahead of the transfer deadline – it remains to be seen how he will impact on McClean’s gametime should he be signed, though given O’Neill’s level of faith, it’s unlikely he would oust the Irishman from the Black Cats first XI.

I am in utter dismay here since i have 3 players from Chelsea and 2 from Reading(who will not play in gameweek 3) + aguero…
Aguero’s transfer is the priority now. So swapping him with tevez will be done this week.
But 3 chelsea players torres, mata and ivanovic…I am not so profound of Mata who had 2 bad games as far as FPL is concerned. What i was thinking was to swap mata for Kagawa or nasri by taking a 4 point hit this week. Should I do this or not?

If you were me, What would you do in this situation?

    Please comment guys.

I would sit tight and definitely not take a hit this week. Mata could easily score/assist vs Newcastle.

Then just remove 1 Chelsea for GW 3, make sure you get 11 players out, and relax because after GW 3 Chelsea fixtures still look pretty decent and it won't be the end of the world stilll having 2 of them.

I like your thinking, in getting rid of Mata, and the replacements you've mentioned are both good.. I would choose Kagawa over Nasri though, I think Kagawa has a great chance for some points over the next three and you already have City cover in Tevez

Unless there's a Chels you'd want for after GW3, I think the priority is to ship them out first, as they have the higher value - which would be sitting on your bench.

Mata to Kagawa, as United have Fulham at home. Then Torres to either Adebayor, Jelavic, Bent, etc. next week.

Sounds like you're going to take a hit this week or next anyway to get eleven starters in GW3, so it's a question of who do you want for this weekend? Mata or Kagawa?

MAta will fall in price tonight.

I'm going to have a crap team for gw 3, but I'm not to worried. It's early days and if you look at the ranking you will notice 1pts equates to +- 38k in rankings, so I'm not taking hits. Not yet.

I think for those with plans this week of Mata -> Michu, and Torres -> RVP would be better advised to make the 1st transfer this week and wait another week for RVP..

Apart from the obvious 4 point hit, surely we would want to be more confident about RVPs playing time/role etc after more than just a 20 minute cameo, which from what I hear was rather poor.

Also Torres home against New, with increased confidence (hopefully, after nicking one against RDG), is certainly not guaranteed to score 4 points less than RVP at home to Fulham who have looked tidy at the back.

Downgrade Mata this week and upgrade Torres to Rooney or RVP in GW 3 after assessing them both this weekend.

My 2 cents on the issue anyway…

Yeh clearly if you bring him in you would have to captain him to make it worth your while, and there is definitely the chance for huge returns.

I figure that if he does explode just make sure you have the cash to get him in immediately, as you dont want to miss out for the season!

I've wildcarded early on in the season before, but only when you are facing less than 11 players, or a way below average team (through incompetence). Your team scored above average this week, so I wouldn't go crazy yet.

Looking to shift Ramires, preferably before his price drop. Have some options in mind:

    A) Pienaar
    B) McClean
    C) Michu (already have Dyer...)
    D) A Johnson (if he moves)
    E) Ben Arfa (would require 4 point hit)
    F) Guilherme
    G) Lennon (have Bale).

Interested to get a spread of opinions, one letter answers very welcome! 😛

      A or E.

I'd go A. Newc in Greece tonight and away on sat. I know barfa didn't travel but it might be a stretch for the rest of the team.

I really like barfa though. Would have had him if pard wasn't such a liar. Does A leave you with the cash to do E some other week without the hit?

Afternoon all. Having a particularly busy one this week so struggling to keep up with the ff. Just as I was writing Torres off last night he goes and scores, while Ivan scores a second to put a right royal kybosh on my plan to do Ivan>Baines in GW4. So, after a gw of mixed fortunes and with a 4pt hit to dispell the Kun I am finding myself with this merry lot for GW2:

    Begovic (Jussi)
    Ivan Zab Rafael Cuellar (Cerny)
    VDV Michu Yaya (Noble Ahamdi)
    RVP(c) Torres Podolski

VDV and Rafael being the biggest doubts I reckon I have decent cover for this week in my subs. RVP is potentially the biggest gotcha waiting to happen!

    Thoughts? Good to go?
