Two draws, two very different matches. While Liverpool and City played out a ding-dong battle at Anfield, there was further frustration for Arsene Wenger as the Gunners again struggled for a cutting edge at the Britannia. Here’s today’s Stock Check…

On the Up

The Arsenal defence
The installation of Steve Bould as the Gunners’ new defensive coach has already made an impact. Arsenal coped comfortably with Stoke’s physical approach at the Britannia this afternoon and have now returned back-to-back clean sheets in their opening couple of Gameweeks. Carl Jenkinson continues to present value while Bacary Sagna remains sidelined.

Santi Cazorla
Handed corners and a fair share of free-kicks, the former Malaga man was once again impressive. Clearly, the Gunners need time to gel up front but when the goals start to flow, he looks likely to be central to their attacking returns.

Michael Kightly
Grabbed a goal on his debut at Reading last week playing on the right wing, the summer signing started off on the left this time out, after Matthew Etherington was ruled out through injury. Impressing again, he could well oust Jermaine Pennant as a first-team regular this term and establish himself as a key member of Tony Pulis’ side.

Raheem Sterling
A surprising inclusion on Brendan Rodgers’ team sheet that immediately put Fantasy managers on alert. His encouraging performance only compounded matters. At just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League and 4.3 in the Sky Sports Game, Sterling could emerge as a huge budget option should he cement a starting role in Liverpool’s system. However, with Nuri Sahin and Oussama Assaidi to integrate, perhaps we shouldn’t take too much for granted with Rodgers’ tactics and lineup just yet.

Luis Suarez
Another outstanding display, this time capped by a superb curling free-kick for Liverpool’s second. Fantasy managers will have nodded in appreciation but there’s likely to be a long way to go before the Uruguayan becomes a serious consideration given the current crop of options up front.

Carlos Tevez
We stuck with him in the Scout Picks and he duly obliged by delivering a goal and assist return. As discussed in yesterday’s Knee Jerk, he looks to have a starting role in our forward line reserved in this form and with Sergio Aguero crocked.

Yaya Toure
A priceless goal from the Ivorian to accompany his assist in Gameweek 1. Pushed forward with the introduction of Jack Rodwell, Toure duly punished some poor Liverpool defending to draw City level and deliver yet again for his Fantasy owners. With David Silva still weary and Samir Nasri likely to come under threat from rotation, Toure is a consistent Fantasy force.

Going Down

Theo Walcott
Dropped to the bench and utilised as no more than an impact sub, question marks must be against his role as a regular starter under Wenger right now. Walcott has been handed a high price across the Fantasy games after a strong previous campaign – if the current situation continues, plenty Fantasy managers will be parting company with Walcott, with Gervinho perhaps offering a cheaper route into Wenger’s midfield.

The City Defence
Roberto Mancini rotated his formation and dropped Joleon Lescott, while Gael Clichy was absent to attend the birth of his child – in truth he may not have started in the 3-5-2. While that will concern their Fantasy owners, with City conceding again, those holding Vincent Kompany will also be wondering if the City skipper justifies the fee given the scarcity of clean sheets right now.

Stewart Downing
Did he really have any Fantasy backers after last season’s blank? It seems unlikely but, having been relegated to the bench to make way for Raheem Sterling, his potential for regular starts is now under real threat as Rodgers puts his stamp on the Liverpool squad.

Lucas
A good option in the Sky Sports game with strong passing and tackling bonus potential, Lucas hobbled off early on with a thigh injury and will now surely be rested for Gameweek 3 and over the international break.

Samir Nasri and David Silva
Can Fantasy managers rely on either in the coming weeks? Nasri started the season spectacularly but looks set to come under threat of rotation should Roberto Mancini persevere with the 3-5-2 system experiments. As for Silva, his season is yet to click into gear – relegated to the bench today, he’s reportedly short of 100% match fitness and is being overshadowed by Yaya Toure in Fantasy terms.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I want to replace Harte and have 6.5 to spend but I cant see any decent defensive options.
Here is my current lot of defenders:

    Krul Vorm

    Cole Shawcross Simpson Harte Hangeland

I don't like Spurs with AVB at the helm because they will concede.
United don't impress me at the back either and City are a no go for the moment.

    Any ideas??

    LIV v MCI - notes.

    * Liverpool lined up with a 4-3-3. Suarez in the middle with Sterling left and Suarez right. Kolarov left wing back and Milner right wing back again.
    * MCI surprisingly played their "plan B" 3-4-1-2 formation. Since this only had space for one central attacking midfielder, they chose Nasri over Silva who possibly is still a little tired. Tevez and Balotelli up front. This didn't make sense to me from the start as this pitted 3 center backs against 3 mobile strikers without a spare defender to mop up, and stuff did happen.

    * City were presumably trying to overload the flanks with their two free wing backs and score from crosses. This produced little, apart from Kelly making an awful mistake dealing with one of the crosses putting it on a plate for Yaya.

    * On the other hand, City had weakened their central midfield - there were now only three men in the middle as opposed to the usual four when they play their narrow 4-2-2-2 with Silva and Nasri. Worse still, Nasri is more of a threat but far less of a passing playmaker than Silva, and was uninvolved. Hence it often felt like City were playing with two in midfield against three or more for Liverpool - exactly the same problem Newcastle had against Chelsea yesterday when they lost.

    * Liverpool dominated central midfield with Allen deep, Gerrard quite deep and Shelvey surprisingly advanced and taking loads of shots. Shelvey was only on because of Lucas' early injury but offered plenty of vertical movement in midfield and ball-winning energy. He may not be as bad as I thought. If Lucas

    * Because Liverpool dominated central midfield they could supply the mobile front three, whose movement was brilliant and passing is improving. Sterling, after an impressive preseason, delivered with a superb game - I think this was his debut in the starting XI in the Prem and he is a possible legend in the making. Superb dribbling and general threat, if he cements a place alongside Suarez they could rip defences to shreds. Borini did his job well although still lacks a lethal edge.

    * Gerrard got two assists for me, which chuffs me but I am keeping my head screwed on. This is the conundrum - he isn't playing very advanced at all. His role is almost identical to his role for England - crosser, midfield metronome, set pieces, long shots. This is reinforced by both assists coming from set pieces. One was a superb cross from a corner, the other a bit jammy - a Suarez free kick he won because someone handled his long shot. I hate to oversimplify by using the comparison of another player again, but it helps you get the picture - I'd say Gerrard is playing the Beckham role. He's not in the hole and rarely involved around the box. The question is basically whether his crosses and long shots are worth 9.5m, and I'm leaning towards no.

    * City forwards definitely play wide in the 3-4-1-2 system, running into the corners to interchange with fullbacks and cross - as shown by Tevez' assist.

    * Mancini waited a long time to fix his midfield. The first thing he did was sub off the uninvolved Nasri for Rodwell - a classic Mancini move that allowed Yaya to get forward while De Jong and Rodwell covered him. This culminated in his fortunate goal in the box due to Kelly failing to deal with Tevez' cross.

    * The second thing Mancini did was sub Silva on for Milner. Silva drifted central as usual, made more passes than Nasri, was more involved and helped City compete in midfield.

    * I am not sure Mancini will be too keen to repeat this 3-4-1-2 experiment without doing it differently next time. He may also think twice about playing Nasri ahead of Silva in this system. Nasri paid off against Chelsea in the Community Shield, but he could get away with it after Chelsea went down to 10 men. If they go back to 4-2-2-2 I can see both Silva and Nasri starting regularly of course.

    Overall:
    - Ones to watch: Sterling, Shelvey (pending Lucas injury), Suarez
    - Ones to be concerned about - Nasri, Balotelli
    - Ones to agonize about: Gerrard

Suarez was in the middle at the start (Borini right, Suarez centre, Sterling left)

When Carroll came on very late, they went Suarez right, Carroll centre, Sterling left, I think.

Might as well not do, it's a load of nonsensical bollocks.

Sterling didn't have a 'superb' game. He was alright and did several good things, generally fouled the opposition though due to the fact he was overzealous and naive. He'll learn. Legend in the making? Haha, too early to tell. Been watching too much Sky Sports my friend - use your eyes not your ears.

Of course I did, over a few pints with my friends rather than behind a computer screen taking notes on formation and tactics that were either blindingly obvious or complete nonsense.

You say something didn't work yet a goal came from it? Hmmm...

The Sterling shout was the worst though. He played well for a 17 year old against the Champions, he wasn't 'superb' or 'terrific' though. That's the trouble in this country, like I said above, a young player does a couple of decent things and they're praised to high heaven.

I think it's to make their dick look big if they ever do actually become the next 'big thing' so they can say "I told you so..."

This is my first season playing FPL. I see some people and articles talking about WC-ing during international break to ride the price rises. Does that mean that if you WC when the last GW before the break starts, you can transfer in the players that are gonna rise every single night during the break, potentially increasing your team value by.. quite a lot? If so, why doesn't every single non-casual do this?

Normally it's when there's two lots of double gameweeks in a row. You spend the weeks before getting in the players who have a double gameweek in, say, gameweek 27. Then you wildcard, and get players with a double in 28.

Use the 4 bench slots to keep hold of your key players who have either gained you some value, or who are essential for the following weeks. Jobs a good'un.

I see your point. But just go for him I guess. If you play your wildcard now, I guess you did it to get the best value for money. And he is a steal at the present price.

Noble? Budget midfield there, the rest of your team must be stacked.

Lining up like this for next week.. (used FT Ramires--->Michu last night)

    Friedel
    Lescott Demel Cuellar
    Bale Valencia Michu Noble
    RVP(v) Tevez(C) Graham

    Federici Fonte Guthrie Ivan

Anything worth taking a hit, weary of Mancini benching Lescott. Take a hit for Baines? Will wildcard over international break if my midfield fails to produce... Guthrie is my highest scoring mid FFS..

Is Torres -> RVP worth a 4 point hit?

Already have Kagawa and I'm liking Torres'/Chelsea's form/fixtures (has the blank next week though)

I don't think so but the consensus here seems to be that it's the right move. Go with your gut instinct, you might be wanting to ditch RVP again in GW5 anyway as the fixtures get tough and Rooney could be on his way back then. Assuming you're not struggling for a full team GW3 that is.

Want to upgrade one of the 4.0 defenders (Tierny, Gorkss, Demel), any idea on who? Don't want to go higher then 5.5 (leaves me enough cash to get Hazard for gw.4). Any ideas on who should get the boot and for whom? Considering Rangel, but is it an overkill with 3 from SWA? Or an Everton defender maybe? They have started strong.

Keepers/other defenders: Foster, Mignolet, Ivan, Zabaleta
