A couple of Gameweeks into the new season and Sir Alex Ferguson has been tinkering with his up front options already, handing Fantasy managers plenty to consider. For the weekend visit of Fulham, the United boss retained just one of his four attacking players –Shinji Kagawa – from the side that lost to Everton in Gameweek 1; a sign, perhaps, of what may unfold over the campaign.

There’s little doubt Kagawa has settled quickly into his new surroundings. With his manager admitting the idea of starting both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie for the Fulham match was “too much of a risk†due to fitness issues, the Japanese star was an automatic selection for the role in “the hole†against Martin Jol’s side.

Prior to the match against the Cottagers, Ferguson lavished praise upon Kagawa, indicating he expects a significant attacking contribution from the Japanese star over the course of the current campaign:

I would also include Shinji Kagawa in the [goalscoring] mix because he is very much an attacking player, nominally from midfield but perfectly capable of taking a front role. One thing for sure is that he will add a scoring dimension if he plays central midfield, as he showed last season for Borussia Dortmund. We have been low on goals from midfield in recent seasons. There was a time when Bryan Robson would give you a dozen through the centre of the park and Paul Scholes in his heyday was good for 10 or so but lately we haven’t seen that kind of tally.I believe that Kagawa will put that right, which with the addition of Van Persie to the team, should ensure that we don’t lose any more titles on goal difference.

With Rooney now ruled out for the next few matches with a thigh injury, Kagawa could be set to forge a partnership with Van Persie up front for United – as a result, we take a look at the club’s first two matches to ascertain just where, if any, the difference lay in the respective performances.

Average Positions

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Looking at the average position map from the two games, the similarity between Kagawa and Rooney at Everton is striking. In the Goodison encounter (left), Kagawa (26) and Rooney (10) were almost in identical positions when in possession – the latter’s propensity to drop back and influence the game from a deeper position dampened the side’s attacking edge. Nani (17) also played a part here, too; starting on the right wing, the Portuguese star continually came inside when on the ball, affording Kagawa little space to dictate matters in “the holeâ€.

Compared to the Fulham game (right), the difference is obvious. Antonio Valencia (7) hogged the touchline far more than Nani managed at Everton, while Robin Van Persie (20) took up a more advanced position than Rooney in the lone forward role. These two factors combined allowed Kagawa a far greater in the middle of the park and afforded United a superior attacking edge. Indeed, Kagawa’s average position against Fulham is the same as Rooney’s at Everton; a definite sign that the two are perhaps too similar in style to play together as effectively as Kagawa and Van Persie or Rooney and Van Persie.

Kagawa and Rooney

Despite his side having less of the ball against Fulham in comparison to Everton (60.1% v 70% possession), Kagawa managed to register slightly more touches per minute (1.0 to 1.1) against the Cottagers. He also received exactly the same number of passes per minute (1.4) in both games, though his overall totals are obviously affected by the game time in each match –he played the full 90 minutes against the Toffees but made way for Rooney on 67 minutes on Saturday. Regardless of who he plays alongside up front, the Japanese star is likely to see the same amount of the ball, going by the stats so far.

Kagawa (eve)Kagawa (FUL)Rooney (FUL)Van Persie (FUL)Rooney (eve)
Mins/Touch1.11.03.32.21.3
Mins/Pass Rcvd1.11.44.33.31.9

Rooney’s stats, on the other hand, vastly differ over the two games. Against Everton as the lone frontman, he had a touch every 1.3 minutes and received a pass every 1.9 minutes but, coming on as a direct replacement for Kagawa, he failed to impress in “the hole†alongside Van Persie. The game seemed to pass by the United number 10 – with a touch every 3.3 minutes and a pass received every 4.3 minutes, his arrival failed to have the desired effect.

A look at Van Persie’s stats against Fulham highlights the difference in his interpretation of the lone forward role – he had less of a desire to drop back like Rooney against Everton and was resultantly far less involved in the overall play with a touch every 2.2 minutes and a pass received every 3.3 minutes. With more space afforded to Kagawa as a result of Van Persie and Valencia’s presence, the Japanese playmaker managed four shots in the Fulham match, whereas against Everton he failed to register a single attempt.

Nani and Valencia

The battle for the right wing berth is just as pertinent a point. As the respective average position maps highlight, Valencia clearly offers a better balance on the flank and the stats more than back this up. Against Everton, Nani saw the ball once every 1.4 minutes – while that’s not too dissimilar to Valencia’s 1.1 minutes per touch against Fulham, it’s where the likeness ends. Nani made just 28 touches in the Toffees final third over his 78 minutes at Goodison; half Valencia’s 56 in the win over Fulham.

Indeed, the latter was United’s main out ball in the attacking zone against the Cottagers – he received 40 passes and made 29 successful passes in the final third; Nani’s Goodison stats are 16 and 12 respectively, a significant difference.

Mins/TouchFinal 3rd TchPass Rcvd Final 3rdSucc Pass Final 3rdCrossesChances Created
Nani (eve)1.428161280
Valencia (FUL)1.1564029143

The maps below represent the position of origin of each chance created in each of United’s two games so far. The lack of creativity on the right at Everton (left) differs vastly from the Fulham match (right) with Valencia on the flank, with United failing to provide a single scoring opportunity down the right at Goodison. The latter produced 14 crosses against Fulham compared to Nani’s eight at Everton and Valencia also created three goalscoring opportunities in Saturdays’ win – Nani failed to make a single “key pass†against Moyes’ men.

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Nani’s lack of defensive awareness is another factor here and one which could play a part in Ferguson’s thinking. The Portuguese star’s tendency to drift centrally when on the ball resulted in 14 of Everton’s 18 crosses coming from the Toffees left flank, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar benefiting from Nani’s wayward positioning. Fulham, on the other hand, were reduced to just five of their 13 crosses from the same wing with Valencia and Rafael limiting the attacking potential of John Arne Riise and Alex Kacaniklic in comparison. Furthermore, when it comes to goalscoring opportunities, Everton created six from the left on Monday, while Fulham managed just two at the weekend, despite having far more of the ball against United than the Toffees.

The stats certainly suggest that right now, on form at least, Valencia is a far more productive option on the right than Nani and with Kagawa’s partnership alongside Van Persie up front looking strong, Rooney’s injury certainly takes one difficult decision out of Ferguson’s hands.

I'm gonna be honest here. I have absolutely no idea how to run a website and the complications involved in doing so, as such I can't really present a valid opinion.

I will counter however that such a risky move may not be a beneficial for the business and their advertisers.

I agree with the idea of a members only comments, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. If you run side by side with the normal articles there should be no downturn in traffic and may promote the memberships sales as well.

Obviously achieving this on the back office side is a lot more complicated than just saying it. I have faith that the scouts are working on a solution.

I for one think the membership is great value and I haven't really used the member's area that extensively until this season.

Yeah, he was 90% 'good', 10% 'bad', in my estimation.

He could be a 'bad cop', thus enabling the rest to be mellow, 'good cops'. Fact is, sometimes people ought to be told the unvarnished truth. He'd do that.

Unfortunately, he'd lose perspective and go way over the line at times ... to his own detriment.

Rapid price rises are scuppering my plans on a daily basis, so going to take a risk on early transfer and point hits.

McClean, Ivanovic, Cazorla out - Michu, BArfa, Rangel in.

Need to upgrade Fabio and Tierney at some point but saving the extra £2.5m for Hazard after GW3 (hope he gets an injury (minor) during international break!).

I fell asleep last night missing the Cazorla to Michu transfer. That left me 0.1 short for McClean to BArfa and Tierney to Rangel.

Now Ivanovic has to get the chop and Tierney lies there for the time being.

The use of WC must be driving it, but it is annoying.

An alternative strategy to deal with how the points are developing. Since lots of forwards are thriving while midfield has only a few good options, why not play a formation that van alternate between 4-3-3/3-4-3?

    Foster Begovic
Baines Rangel Boyce Hughes Cuellar Hazard Kagawa Cazorla Maloney Guthrie
    RVP Tevez Petric

    For example.

On your earlier post, the Vertongen C choice almost returned 30 points so I don't think it was as quite off the mark as you may think. Yes it did return a smelly 2 points! but he was a goal threat, had one disallowed for offside and was 2 mins away from a cleanie so I'm actually not that pissed off about it, I'll try him again soon enough, I reckon there's bags a points in that lad, did you win this week btw?

I have RvP but I don't think he is essential. Kagawa or Valencia may be enough MUN attacking cover depending on needs elsewhere. I would hold here and bring in Torres in GW4 for some attacking CHE cover.

RVP if you can afford him offers unlimited potential and an autonomic captaincy option for the next 4 game weeks (or whenever Pig recovers).

As a Hammer, I am particularly interested ...

      I'm forever blowing bubbles,
      Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die.
      Fortune's always hiding,
      I've looked everywhere,
      I'm forever blowing bubbles,
      Pretty bubbles in the air.

I'm dreaming dreams, I'm scheming schemes,
      I'm building castles high.
They're born anew, their days are few,
      Just like a sweet butterfly.
And as the daylight is dawning,
They come again in the morning!

      I'm forever blowing bubbles,
      Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die.
      Fortune's always hiding,
      I've looked everywhere,
      I'm forever blowing bubbles,
      Pretty bubbles in the air.

When shadows creep, when I'm asleep,
To lands of hope I stray!
Then at daybreak, when I awake,
      My bluebird flutters away.
Happiness, you seem so near me,
Happiness, come forth and cheer me!

      I'm forever blowing bubbles,
      Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die.
      Fortune's always hiding,
      I've looked everywhere,

Morning guys, was here about an hour ago but have actually read this thread from start to finish - very interesting reading, and I'll tuck my RMT under my arm 🙂

I agree with a lot of the gripes I don't comment too much, because a lot of the time I don't have anything to say, this is a football/fantasy football site, i'm sure nobody is interested in what I had for dinner (Thai Chicken Soup).

Saying that though, some people are extremely funny, others very annoying, but pointing that out seems to fuel their fire. I think a lot of new people comment a lot in order to get recognised quickly but sometimes its quality rather than quantity.

I have experienced the "What a ridiculous question" when asking for feedback. I think that is uncalled for as apparently there is no such thing as a stupid question... You should hear some of the things I get asked at work. I love this site, and have noticed that later hours do tend to promote a more sensible discussion. Thank heavens for shift work!!!
I joined this site to improve my gameplay, but of course I want to build up a rapport with people too, I find that difficult sometimes when I don;t always want or feel a need to comment.

Anyway I am glad that Mark and the others are trying to address the issues

I've usually found it's the most annoying posters who post those annoying replies. I've been a tool, for sure, but I really try to reserve that for the mean-spirited people on here.

The ones who seem 'clueless' (no offense to you intended) are one of the reasons for this blog: for the less-informed to ask questions in order for them to become informed. Many times, those less-informed may be very young, or foreign to the game (FPL or RL footy), and genuinely in need of some mentoring. There are many who help on here. Unfortunately, they can be drowned out by the other ... less-helpful people.

I've found that some people can be real leaders in that regard: Doosra, Attila, Applebonkers, RCA, Gargamel, et al, really make a fine example of how the site should be, imo. Bully for them and anyone else in their mould.

Totally agree Eric. When I first found this site I asked a few typical beginner's questions and got heartily sneered at by a couple of people ( their names are in my little black book ). Camzy and Applebonkers answered my questions and I appreciated it very much. I'm not very good at this game but I'll chip in with my thoughts when I have some.
Having said that though, the needy attention seekers and people like this twit Baulchy are thoroughly deserving of a bit of stick.

To be honest its a site of opinions, I do listen to some people, especially a die hard fan who can offer an insight to their team. At the end of the day, you pick your own team and manage it and sometimes your little punt could prove a gem even if everybody else slates it.

Saying that though I don't mind looking at RMT's especially ones that throw up something different. Eg - really liked Corrigans back line earlier with no big hitters but good solid rotations

This is my fourth season using this site, first started posting in the tail-end of the 08/09. It was way different then.. you never had an article exceeding 1,000 posts or even close unless there hadn't been one posted for a couple of days.

A lot of things have improved here.. more information, more articles etc and generally a small time site has become a big success and fair play.
But on the flip side a lot has deteriorated. It's the exact same format that was great for catering to hundreds of replies, but with thousands upon thousands of replies now it doesn't work. Before you'd read every post on a thread, you'd need to quit your job to do it now. Good discussions wouldn't fall away into obscurity from the page turning 3 or 4 times, everyone was more familiar with each other, you knew which guys knew their stuff or which guys were the weathervanes.

I'm delighted to see Mark's looking at possible changes in future because in many ways this place is becoming a victim of its' own success.
I don't mind most of it, Over the last 3 or 4 years I've always gone through lulls where I won't post for weeks or months at a time but there are many things that get on my t!ts here. For instance, I had to stop using the chatroom during matchdays years ago because too many were acting like infants. But nowadays if I can help it I won't bother with the forum on a saturday either, you'll see an ENTIRE page of useless "Rooooooneyyyy!!!!!" posts if he happens to score. Or for instance this friday when you see hundreds upon hundreds of people posting "Tevez or Rvp for captain?" None of them will go through the replies and find the advice they just post it one after the other. Needless.

I'm rambling. I think ill write something about football now 🙂

I think spurs have a few nice fixtures coming, same with newcastle, everton, fulham, sunderland and west brom. RVP is a defo starter with rooney out for 2 months. Have 1.9 million in the bank so if bale does shit can replace him with hazard. plus torres for tevez swap maybe next week, get more money aswell with tevez increasing in price. Unsure tho should i have a fulham or newcastle defender but i dont want 3 players from 1 team.... hmmmm

After 4 games Newcastle's fixtures go downhill for a bit so you may want to choose one from ba and Ben arfa (I usually love doubling up but only when fixtures are good for 6games+)

I like the team though. Not too generic. I guess you plan to get hazard in later?

if bale does shit, hazard will come in. i think its only a matter of time before bale starts producing. spurs just seem to lack the end product atm but with games n fitness, they will start scoring. Who would you go for, ba or ben arfa? haha

I have hazard and bale (had both in my initial team) but this comes at the cost of not having van persie.

Maybe pienaar over Ben arfa. But actually having both is fine if you're happy to take hits later down the line, or play them through worse fixtures. I believe in taking hits when they're well calculated based on a big swing in fixtures, or of course injuries/ rotation.

Definately wouldnt have Ba and Ben Arfa. Get Pienaar for Barfa. Gallas wont start much - get Saylor, Ridgewell or Hangeland. McClean over Morrison. Downgrade Foster.

Newcastle hav villa, everton, norwich and reading in their next four. having ridgewell is the same as having foster really. hughes before hangeland for me 😛

I agree with your pick of Morrison ... fantastic fixtures.

Everton also have fixtures to compare with newc especially longer term, so I would also agree with pienaar over Ben arfa unless your tactics involve taking numerous hits (which is fine too if they're well thought out)

west brom look very gud imo. i honestly dont know whether to go with ben arfa or not, i just look at those two home games, villa n norwich n i see points. it looks nicer than everton fixtures if u ask me

Gallas and Jenkinson (and possibly Kacanik) won't last as starters.
Slightly too much on GKs (Mignolet rotates nicely with Foster for 0.5m cheaper).
      I like the rest.

so mignolet instead of howard? drop cuellar and pick up an everton defender. i think it just works out cheaper. having mignolet and cuellar is almost the same and cuellar is .5 cheaper 😛 hmmm

Britton, ElAhamadi, Guthrie(for security of starts) but won't bring in more than 2 or 3 points a week (apart from ElAhamadi's goal last week).
If Dempsey leaves I think your Kacanikalic choice is the best option.

Doos whilst you're here I read your WC article and found it a very interesting read and has led me to my QOTD.

When wildcarding when is the best time to start and the best method to adopt.
My ultimate aim is to strengthen my team but to increase value I am guessing this strategy should be adopted

Start Saturday afternoon after results...check Total FPL and start bringing in players who are going to rise along with ones you actually want. Then every day do similar, sellnig players who have risen for ones on the cusp??
Then come Friday night saturday morning finalise your team??

By wildcarding in tihs fashion how much can you potentially make

And I take it you have to wait for a player to raise .2 before selling?

yes , wait for .2 rise b4 sale. and don't forget if you sell while tinkering you have to pay the 'new' higher price if you want to stick wiith the player. So only sell if you defo don't want.

Yep. All good. About 1.0 in a good gap, I reckon. I never push the button until I have actually done 4 transfers. 🙂

Also. you have to stick. Usually only 4/5 will do the double rise you need. If you can find 3, you will have done well. The others are the ones you actually want. 🙂

Yeah i took a couple of 12 point hits last year and vowed never again - i've done a 4 pointer this week and am actually not liking the look of it now but I really don't want to WC too early this year.

Your article actually gave good arguments for each method.

If you do so during an international week, where the GWs are 2 calendar weeks apart, you could reap 1.0 or more, I reckon. Players now seem to be limited to a 0.3/week increase, so you'd want to wait for a player to go up 0.2, then trade out for another riser. But it's harder than it sounds as the price rises are usually front-loaded and back-loading during the week, making it tough to maximize the full # of days.

Do it the way you describe and potentially you can give your team a good boost in value.
I did this last season in the international break GW11/12. However I regretted it as I broke up a perfectly reasonable squad. This season I'm determined to wait til a late bumper DGW (points over money).
Saying all that I prob should've used it this week after my terrible, terrible start.

I'm not panicking yet Roy. Sometimes I do transfers for the sake of them. This year I seem to have got the right teams just the wrong players, except for Bent, hence the 4pt this week. But my feeling is if you can fall 30 points behind in a week you can easily make it up the next
