With Chelsea skipping the Gameweek, the early season form of Swansea and Everton ensures that their Fantasy assets hold firm in our Watchlist rankings. Up front, both Carlos Tevez and Robin Van Persie continue to stand out as the heavyweights of choice…

Goalkeepers

Two clean sheets in two, it’s little wonder that we see Michel Vorm retain top spot in the keeper rankings. Tim Howard climbs to second off the back of Everton’s superb start to the season – his fixtures also improve in the coming weeks, and with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin in such strong form, further clean sheets seem likely. Howard looks a good option in goal for those without the funds to stretch to the raiding Leighton Baines.

Joe Hart’s lack of clean sheets will be a concern but with Vincent Kompany now seemingly the only secure option in front of him, the City stopper’s stock takes a rise for the month ahead for those willing to spend in this area. Hart remains the favourite as top ranked keeper, despite the early stutters and is your “fire and forget” option.

West Brom’s Ben Foster looks a decent option in the mid-price along with Newcastle’s Tim Krul, who now begins to benefit from a stronger schedule. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel has the fixture list on his side but his stock has taken a knock following persistent speculation surrounding the signing of Hugo Lloris at Spurs. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi is your budget option lower down the rankings, with Jussi Jaaskaleinan also worth a glance or two.

Defenders

Angel Rangel retains top spot, having superseded team-mate Chico following the doubts surrounding the centre-back’s fitness going into the win over West Ham. Rangel justified the backing with a goal and clean sheet return, and with fixtures remaining strong, the enterprising right-back holds firm under pressure from Everton’s Leighton Baines in second. Baines’ form epitomises the Toffees right now and, if you’re investing heavily in your defence, the left-back looks the prize option on offer.

With clean sheets so hard to find, the temptation is to opt for cheap options and those defenders that offer attacking potential – Wigan’s Emmerson Boyce fits the bill in both cases and claims a spot in our top five courtesy of some strong short-term fixtures.

While City’s defensive returns have been non-existent, an improved fixture list, and the fact that he stands out as the only apparently secure option, boosts Vincent Kompany in our thinking for the month ahead. He clings to a top five spot, with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker just retaining his place in that select group.

There are a host of mid-price options to consider below that, with West Brom’s Liam Ridgewell and Newcastle’s Steven Taylor appearing to offer decent potential.

Midfielders

Our faith in Gareth Bale wavers but Tottenham’s fixtue list remains strong enough to help him retain his top ranking, holding off the charge from United’s Shinji Kagawa, who now looks set to benefit from Wayne Rooney’s injury with a run of assured starts.

In truth, Eden Hazard would be sitting on top of the rankings had it not been for his blank at the weekend so, right now, he looks up on the likes of Hatem Ben Afra, Yaya Toure, Michu and Marouanne Fellaini as mid-price options. The latter just gets the nod over team-mate Steven Pienaar, although it’s ridiculously close between them – Fellaini’s goal threat just gives him the edge right now, while he continues to be deployed in support of Nikaca Jelavic.

Forwards

It’s no surprise to see Carlos Tevez remain on top here following his returns at Anfield on Sunday. Robin Van Persie cements his second place rank following Rooney’s injury, while Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse is the significant climber in third. The Senegalese striker now has stronger fixtures to come and will surely be well backed to break his duck for the season against Aston Villa this weekend.

Both Nikica Jelevic and Emmanuel Adebayor surely have goals to come given their forthcoming schedules, while Swansea’s Danny Graham still looks the strongest option in the budget bracket over the next month, having opened his account in the win over West Ham.

Lower down there are some great differentials if you want them – Fulham’s Mladen Petric rivals Graham in the budget bracket, as does Wigan’s Arouna Kone who impressed with his first strike at Southampton in Saturday’s win.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think Peinaar is a flash in the pan. Mirallas is somewhat of an unknown and he's competing with Jelavic and Fellaini.

      1) I really wouldn't pick Graham. Petric?
      2) I think RvP is overpriced. Torres?
      3) I would look at the likes of Danny Fox at Soton (free kicks, corners etc) or Carl Jenkinson (at least in the short term) for Hughes or Demel.

Rafael should be nailed on for a while so would be a good option if you are looking for a United defender.

Clichy? Not guaranteed gametime and City's defence looks pretty shaky at the mo. Don't laugh but I'd consider Emmerson Boyce or Figueroa at Wigan!

Just a tid-bit from our old friend The Moose

He was arguing that Spurs don't need Lloris on the basis that

    1) Friedel is a good keeper (hard to argue that one I suppose, it's his age I guess)

    2) If AVB didn't rate him he does still have Gomes (????????)

Absolutely agree, JKIS. Brad was excellent last season, a real calming influence across our whole defence and regardless of his age, he's in tip-top condition. I see no rush to splash out £12m on a GK with less pedigree, frankly.

Gomes simply scares his own defenders to death, so unpredictable.

West ham are still good defensively at home.
Stoke have a goal or two in them, so too do QPR.

No point. 10M come GW4. What we could do is promote him like no ones business and hope for 50% ownership so that there is a substantially lesser price rise GW4 giving us some much needed time.

Who am i kidding, this guy is only going to rise like a beast. But a few goals from Bale, HBA and Kagawa could halt this process. 🙂

Back to the question of whether to take him out (for Bale) and bring him back in after the deadline, in my case I will lose 0.2m in the exchange. Normally I'm guilty of trading too many points hits for team value, but is this going too far the other way? Losing too much value for (potential) points?

I'm not sure it's worth it. It means me dropping Maloney or Kaca, for a potential, say HBA. It might not come off and I'll be 0.2m worse off and a transfer down.

Yes I'm pretty torn myself. I'd at least have to move Fellaini on for Pienaar (not too bad in itself) but may have to make another switch to fund it (depending on how far Hazard rises).

It also means transferring Hazard back in on Saturday night just before all the internationals. Not sure I'll be too happy if he picks up an injury having already spent the transfer.

    Afternoon Chaps

    Rooney injury update

I'm working with Crewe Alex at the minute and I've been privy to some physio news on Wayne Rooney, he underwent a general anaesthetic to repair torn muscle fibres, the surgeon used a technique called a 'mesh repair' rather than sutures, this allows a little more structural support of the quadriceps when it is healing (similar to the ‘compartmental’ support of the muscle fascia)...as opposed to sutures it is also tension-free, so usually gradations of exercise therapy tension/stress may be applied at an earlier stage...It also suggests that the tear isn't too severe...this is good news for his rehabilitation as a mesh repair will heal more quickly than a suture repair.

However, because there is fibre damage, the stages of healing/inflamation will have to be adhered to in terms of his physiotherapy rehabilitation, so, I'd imagine it will be at least 4 weeks before he will be prescribed 'open chain' sport related movements (eccentric movements as a separate component, bounding, weight bearing twisting and turning and uni-lateral plyometrics) add to this a further 2-3 weeks before he would be allowed to participate in first team training. Obviously, individual patient healing times vary and I've not seen his medical notes, so I can't be definitive, but i would suggest that Rooney will be out for 8 weeks at a minimum and that is if no set-backs or infections occur.

Additionally, Rooney has a somewhat endo/meso-morphic physique and is thus genetically susceptible to quicker than average fitness losses and fat gain when inactive. This type of physique in a professional athlete takes hard demanding training, single minded motivation and optimal nutrition. Rooney always needs more matches than most following an injury to achieve match fitness and I feel this could delay his return for a further couple of weeks. He could, conceivably be out for 10 weeks.

Anyway, I wasn't going to get RVP yet, but under the circumstances it’s looking like RVP for Torres for a 4 point hit.

Trying to squeeze RVP & Baines into my team. Latest option is to considering Ade instead of Torres. For some reason (i’m not a chelsea fan) I think Torres is gonna hit 200 points this year, but if I go for Ade instead I’d be able to get Baines into my back 4.

    ****, beg
****, S. Taylor, Cuellar, demel, Clyne
    Hazard, kalic, Barfa, Michu, Peinaar,
    Tevez, *****, Rvp

    A. Jaaskelainen , Baines, Clyne, Torres
    B. Vorm, Rafeal, Hughes, Torres
    C. Foster, Baines, Clyne, Ade
    D. Jaaskelainen , Baines, Hughes, Ade

Am I mad to be considering these, Is Baines really that important?
