A Gameweek which saw Fantasy managers dealt both the familiar and the unexpected, as a Dutchman shot to prominence and a formerly fragile back four continued to show resilience. We’re now in a two-week limbo, coveting potentially “essential” assets, while failed stars begin to depreciate. There’s plenty to digest…

The Player

It took just two full appearances in a United shirt for Robin Van Persie to turn our Fantasy squads on their heads. A devastating St Mary’s hat-trick hammered home the message that the Dutchman remains every bit as potent in his new surroundings. It also arrived on day that saw Shinji Kagawa provide little evidence that he could be maintained as a supplier of suitable cover within United’s attacking lineup. Factor in the captaincy at home to Wigan next weekend, when both Carlos Tevez and Eden Hazard face tricky away games, and it’s pretty clear that Van Persie’s stock has soared and will go on doing so.

Four goals in two games, with a missed penalty thrown in, is evidence enough to suggest that Van Persie will push his incredible 30-goal tally of last season. There’s little doubt that Sir Alex Ferguson will be putting emphasis on scoring goals and killing teams off given the significance of goal difference in the previous campaign. In addition, United’s fragility at the back seems to ensure that they will need two or three goals every game to ensure victory. The platform is there, then, for Van Persie to provide huge returns for his owners.

With Wayne Rooney sidelined and the likes of Kagawa and Antonio Valencia threatened by rotation and role changes, Van Persie clearly offers not only the most profitable route to United’s attacking returns, but also the most secure.

The Team

While there were several contenders in the Gameweek, notably West Ham and West Brom, it was Arsenal’s victory at Anfield and the key performers on show that perhaps had the biggest impact on our Fantasy seasons.

The emergence of Santi Cazorla as a Fantasy asset was signposted over his two appearances prior to Sunday – any of our members privy to his stats from the Sunderland and Stoke games will have known just how he’s teetered on the edge of strong returns. Anfield saw that potential come to fruition and there’s little doubt that the Spaniard is now firmly in our minds from this Gameweek on.

Lukas Podolski also came out of the shadows to show his worth, delivering a goal and assist haul in the 2-0 win that will rouse some interest. The German is likely to be overlooked in our crowded forward lines, though, in favour of the pivotal Cazorla in midfield.

The foundation for Sunday’s attacking returns was, however, Arsenal’s defence, which has now delivered three consecutive clean sheets. Steve Bould’s appointment as coach can be cited as key to this new resolve and, what’s even more impressive, is that the shut-outs have been achieved without Bacary Sagna, Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny – all first choice in their respective positions.

While that’s offered decent short-term value options, owners of Carl Jenkinson and Per Mertesacker will now be anxiously awaiting Wenger’s teamsheet in a fortnight, wondering if their assets will go on delivering value. Sagna was on schedule to return after the international break, while Koscielny and Szczesny were kept on the bench at Anfield. It remains to be seen if Wenger will keep faith in light of the defensive performances so far.

One thing is certain, however – Arsenal’s defence is currently standing alone in terms of form and returns with some coverage looking essential. Thomas Vermaelen is, of course, the jewel in the crown. With goals and bonus likely over the season, already he is looking a stronger option for those holding City and United defenders.

The Talking Point

The international break is a testing time. With three Gameweeks down and a host of talent emerging, Fantasy managers now face a fortnight of deliberation, with patience tested to the full.

While the likes of Van Persie, Carlos Tevez and Eden Hazard look a new powerful holy trinity, it’s left assets such as Gareth Bale and David Silva floundering and their owners surely twitching over the transfer button.

Both Bale and Silva are class players, assured of Fantasy returns over the season but the question remains – just how long to keep the faith while others are stealing a march with form players?

Bale, in particular, along with Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez, finds himself a key attacking threat but within a side short on confidence and fluidity. Both Tottenham and Liverpool will likely need time to find the form that will see their players deliver on their potential and, in the meantime, there appears to be assured routes for returns elsewhere – across all the price brackets.

The volatile Fantasy Premier League prices is driving increased transfer activity and it’s genuinely difficult to sit still on proven, but out of form assets, when viable alternatives are spiraling out of sight.

In many ways, Van Persie’s showing will have made the decision easier. Wildcards will surely be thrown at the “problem”, with United’s striker the key target. That will surely see continued sales of Bale, Silva and even Kagawa who, overnight, appears to have slipped in favour as a result of Van Persie’s output.

Showing patience will, undoubtedly be costly in terms of team value. In the short-term, it could also cost points unless Bale and Silva can quickly wake from their slumber to challenge the protagonists so far.

I, for one, adopted a policy of patience with my squad last season – but then I had the comfort of a lineup based on a free Gameweek 2 wildcard which could anticipate the early transfer trends and form. Having twitched severely on Sunday, I can empathise with the dilemma faced over the break and fear that we’ll see many squads scrapped and templates formed that could well take a month or so to break up. Those who “stick” will be doing so in hope that the courage of their conviction pays off, to almost earn them a “differential”, but it won’t be a decision made with any degree of comfort.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Depends on what position of my team I'm looking at:

Keepers/Budget players: try and get players who will last through to January wildcard.

Mid-price players: try and plan 6-7 weeks at a time.

Rolls Royce Players: 2-3 weeks at a time.

Why are people so scared to use their wildcards. This week clearly the time to use (unless you been very fortunate)
We have another one in january so they not as precious as a few seasons ago. No other week this season will there be such an opportunity to maximise team value and fine tune a side until xmas.

Last season i kept my wildcard until march , but by then my team was largely ok anyways , and its benefit was marginal , using now will have massive long term benifit , enabling extra money for the entire season

I have finished in top k last two seasons , and am 4k alredy this , but i still wildcarding , what does that tell you?

That's my reasoning. Either use it now and benefit from TV rise or wait for a DGW. If you use it to stock for a DGW, you still have to devise a strategy of diversifying your team after this particular gameweek. I remember some of my rivals benefiting heavily from WC-ing before last years DGW in GW36, but on the other hand, they could be many places above me, if they wildcarded earlier.

depends on your team really , i'm 4 transfers away from what i want
granted the price rise over the break may hamper this somewhat

if going to take hits to straighten team out now, then i agree. I for one dont see RVP as a must have over the next few fixtures barring wigan. But truth be told, its a huge risk not to have him. I just see it as having a 14 player team and RVP to eliminate the risk. I cant say that the winnetr of the whole tournament will use his wildcard at this stage if he doesnt feel it necessary, but the winner of the whole tournament will have RVP on his team from here on out.

That's a very bold statement. If there's one thing that years of FPL have taught me, no-one is essential for the whole season. This week's must-have team could all be on the scrap heap in a month.

"No other week this season will there be such an opportunity to maximise team value and fine tune a side until xmas."

Quite a biased set of criteria to be judging on, because it inherently rules out weeks after January, where you can effect some massive swings in your expected points tallies, due to double gameweeks etc.

Both years I've played so far there's been a week after january when you can get 7 or 8 extra players without any hits if you play a well-judged wildcard.

    Re: Sterling

He's only young and inexperienced but he's probably Liverpools best player over the past two games. More importantly who are his rotation threats coming from? They sold Maxi and Kuyt, loaned Carroll and missed out on Dempsey. Borini has hardly set the world on fire. Couple that with the loss of Lucas means that Gerrard is less likely to be stuck on the wing.

    Any other opinions?

At Sterlings price it dosent really matter if hes rotated. He going to double rise and will be good bench fodder , enabling people to strengthen elsewhere, most people bringing him in will be on wildcard.
He wouldnt be worth bringing in otherwise , but he makes sense if making wholesale changes

If you are talking about Steven Fletcher, only 1.3% of teams have him, which doesn't really equate to many teams.

Moreover, the proportion of teams owning him has increased from 1% since yesterday, so every possibility of a price rise in the near future.

Ivanovich de gay and rafael are the problems.

I have treated it as "don't do it unless you have to" where you are saying "use it at the time you will get the most out of it", which of course makes sense. I think Davies is in pole position for the left back slot. Tate or Bartley to cover Chico. Probably Tate.

Hi, I'm after some advice please. I want to play the price rises with my WC over the international break. Am I right in thinking a player will have to rise twice for me to make 0.1 profit if I don't intend on keeping said player in my final team? I just wonder how I work out which players to pick for the rises? More than 15 players are going to rise in value in the next two weeks so I can't have all players who rise, is it just a case of going with the players that seem to be getting the most transfers in? Some players will have already risen this gwk which ive missed out on. Nolan is an example of someone who will rise soon but will he go up twice this gwk? I can't see it so would I best be getting toure instead? I can see him rising twice.

    All help and comments appreciated

      That's right - must rise 0.2.
Very hard to predict rises beyond a day or two.

I'm in the same boat, agreed u can't have all 15 spaces to gain value but check the players u want to keep first in ur team first ie RVP tevez etc. (part A)

      B) Then scan the market for players with the highest "Today's NCI" and compare to the player's "Min value"

      C) If any of the players you want to bring in are going to rise 2day or 2moro bring them in now

      D) The spaces that remain are the "junk spaces" use them on the players that fit in to part B

The case for this wildcard is that Mids are the most likely to rise along with defs, only 1 or two fwds look like rising .2 Lambert, mabye berba or fletcher (outside of the obvious RVP,Tevez)

I personally have 1 junk fwd,1 junk mid,5 junk defs, 2 junk GK

Note: Goalkeepers are unlikely to rise .2

dont solely go by who rises today. Sort the todays NTI column from high to low. That will show you which players are getting the most action. Just remember that you need to keep the ones you want to stay with or else it defeats the purpose and you will end up paying more for them. I would initially set the goalies at 4.0 each, one of your defender spots(that isnt rising) to Elliot ward, and then make sure you have the guys you want that are rising soon in their positions. Then use the other spots for making some cash.

Am I to obsessed with price rises/falls when I'm considering doing Fellaini --> Nolan? Should I be more patient?

have a midfield of Fellaini, Michu, Hazard, Barfa and Yaya. Forwards: Petric, RVP and Tevez. Happy with it, but is it maybe to strong? maybe better to free up some funds by selling either petric or fellaini and invest in my defence? (where only Rangel and Baines are the big names).

        Right, good.

I still think Lambert is the better prospect despite Ramirez's price tag, but after flicking through Berba's fixtures I think I may opt for Torres to Berba GW5, then save a transfer for GW7 and bring in Cazorla and Ramirez for Noble and Pienaar if I have the cash.

that sounds like a plan but I don't think you will have the cash. When I tried swapping in Lambert and Cazorla I had 0.2 left. But then again you are downgrading Pienaar so you could probably do it. Unless I dumped Johnson I'm not sure I could. But maybe by GW7 I will know better if Johnson is worth holding or not

Yup, if even one of my top players gets crocked over the break then I think I'll hit the wildcard. But by then it will be too late to play the money game.

I shouldn't really be tempted to wildcard, my squad is fine, but I'm still bloody tempted to do so! Can't remember the last time I didn't wildcard at this point in the season.

It's not them I'm worried about, they'd definitely stay, it's the likes of Gorkss - who dropped last night, who I'd want to get rid of. Don't want to lose value early on shitty bench players. Without looking I'd imagine that Noble may be nearing a drop too.

I find it hard to imagine there will be a point in the season where I'll do a *complete* overhaul and make loads of transfers with a wildcard. Now may be as good a time as any.
