Just when we thought his appetite for a deal had been sated after a summer of frantic activity, Mark Hughes returned to the transfer market once more to snap up the services of Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old arrived just prior to the closure of the transfer window and has signed up on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee:

Amidst a dearth of new arrivals, the acquisition of Granero may prove to be one of Hughes’ canniest pieces of business over the last few months. The QPR boss was suitably delighted to welcome the Spaniard to his squad and clearly expects big things from “The Pirate”:

“He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not. He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do. He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

The Statistics

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Granero struggled to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out to Getafe for the 2007-08 season in order to gain top-flight experience. His campaign was a undoubted hit, with Granero helping his new side reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in addition to returning three goals and a couple of assists in La Liga. Madrid subsequently sold the midfielder to Getafe the following season, installing a buy-back option in his contract should Granero continue to flourish – 35 appearances, five goals and four assists later, his former club was convinced enough to shell out for his services in time for the 2009 campaign.

His return to Madrid proved frustrating once again, though, particularly under Jose Mourinho. While Granero featured 31 times for Manuel Pellegrini, returning three goals and four assists, The Special One’s arrival saw his game time reduced considerably. The midfielder made just 15 starts over his final two seasons, with 21 further appearances as a sub helping him grab a goal and five assists. Granero has featured for his country at every level from U16 to U21 but has yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

While question marks still remain over a number of the summer signings, it’s unlikely that Granero has moved from the Bernabeu to be a bench-warmer in London. He seems set to be a key figure in the QPR midfield for the season ahead, with a central midfield berth looking likely – while he’s also known for his work-ethic, a role alongside an industrious ball-winner such as Samba Diakite or Alejandro Faurlin would complement his passing ability perfectly.

This could afford Hughes the chance to move Ji-Sung Park to the right flank though, alternatively, Granero is versatile enough to play behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on such a scenario, with the Spaniard’s consistency of performance and unselfish style of play maybe even edging him ahead of Adel Taarabt in Hughes’ thoughts further up the pitch.

Much will depend on how quickly QPR can settle this season. With a single point from their opening three matches, they are clearly a work in progress and investment in their Fantasy assets has been mainly put on hold until the new boys start to click; Granero – even with relatively kind prices of 5.5 and 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively – is likely to be monitored from afar in the meantime, then.

With showdowns against Chelsea and Spurs immediately on the horizon, the short-term potential seems limited, though a run of fixtures from Gameweek 6-12 looks highly promising. QPR square up to the likes of (WHM, wba, EVE, RDG, SOT) over that period and if Hughes’ side are to pick up in performance, Granero’s midfield scheming could well be integral to their chances of success.

That's a pure WC team, or it's a one in a million selection-- the markers of a WC are Davies and Lambert just "arrived"... all the others are the hot players and zero cash on hand. Nothing wrong... that's the au courant fashionable team.

It's the dilemma of (1) using a WC early for increased team value and to get the direction reset or (2) endure a bunch of hits to reset and preserve the WC or (3) just to grin and bear it with one FT a week and pop the WC at the opportune week.

Each can work to get you into the top 100. I watched it happen last year and used method three on another team. I am trying method two this year.

I support this analysis. WC button pushed days ago though (no need to discuss the reasons), so now it's about getting in a set of players that I can work with until January. I would especially appreciate feedback on any players that look like flashes in the pan.

my team is almost identical to yours (yaya, nolan, jenks, jaask and fonte instead of pienaar, maloney, baines, foster and davies). essentially you've downgraded midfield to strengthen defense. i might do the same by the end of the break. baines' ICT numbers are ridiculous.

my current wild card team is about making cash and stuff (hoping jenkinsons rises two b4 Gibbs rises one and so on)
anyways i am thinking to the point when i have to pick the team moving forward and i was thinking
    Hart, (Henderson)
Vidic, Gibbs, McAuley, (Davies swans and Demel)
    Hazard, Barfa, Michu, Maloney(Sterling)
    Torres,Tevez,Giroud
1.8mil in bank thinking maybe upgrade Demel or Davies or maybe Gibbs to vermalen

Not like you'll be using your 5th mid that often, but I'd get Guthrie instead of Sterling, as I believe he'll see more minutes.

I don't like Giroud at all. I'd have Vermaelen instead of Vidic. United defense isn't very strong right now.

I wouldn't touch Hart right now either. Plenty of cheaper GK options.

Giroud out for a cheaper forward then upgrade a mid to Cazorla?

Vidic is an expensive outlay for a team not yet settled, better value elsewhere. A downgrade here could make the acquisition of Cazorla much easier?

I don't think you need to wildcard, Just get rid of DDG somehow and bring in a better safer option. Petric to Fletcher looks like a decent idea if you can afford it, I don't think it's worth having Dembele, he's not going to score much and at 6m+ he's too expensive for someone who won't get you points consistently.

You need a few transfers, but I would not WC yet. Important is to know what team you plan to have and act accordingly. You can start by getting a -8 this week and profit from the rises...

Petric(I would give him at least 1 more week. He can stilll score if he plays against WBA at home.)
Dembele(Great player....I doubt he can be profitable fantasyfootball wise)
DDG might come back next game. I would not rush and change the keepers unless you decide to WC
Ridgewell. I would give WBA a couple weeks more and see if the new signing Popov is not going to play in Ridgie's position.

The chances Zab will play this week are 50% IMO. A transfer Zab-Cuellar(not neccessarily this week) is going to give you a very balanced defense + 1.5mil to upgrade your Mid or Petric. I wouldn't panick though. You can still field a decent 11 with the team you already have for GW4. I feel you need a heavy hitter and a strong captain choice in your midfield

Having Liverpool players is a bad idea atm. Is Sahin even that attacking?

I would hold out on transfers unless this is a wildcard team. Dempsey is great, but I don't trust Tottenham right now.

^^.. sahin play defensive midfilder..i can see smthng will hapen from liverpool if the strategy change..

Tottenhem problem is they don have any player have an idea as good attacking center midfilder and i thnk this team have solve this problem and will be great team..( Dempsey)

For Pablo..i like swansea player..and try to get him also..

And like to put list the south new player Gaston as watchlist..

Is it me or are some people a little over enthusiastic about arsenal's defence. All credit to them - they look much more solid than previous years, but they've played three teams without an effective striker in place...

    WBA:
    Reid

So McAuley Olsson and Ridgewell are nailed on, but Jones and Reid rotate? I am not familiar with WBA.

New manager so it's difficult to say, but it seems McAuley Olsson and Ridgewell are nailed on. Popov's signing means he could be used for the odd game in place of Olsson or Ridgewell, but I think he's mainly been bought as cover.

      Nasri > Morrison
      Torres > RVP

1.2m left in bank to deal with tarbaat (and cover price shits in RVP and Marveaux)

But I will weaken two areas of my team, to strengthen one. I'm thinking longer term. Not just for wigan. If zabaleta and nasri were going to play 95% of games I would probably stick. But I think that they will start to get rotated after the break.

I personally see Morrison as a long term upgrade as he is assured starts and allows funds to be invested elsewhere. Same with Zab. But there is more than one way to skin a cat and if you feel your team will benefit overall from no RVP, then no RVP is the way to go. Just feel until Pig is back RVP will be scoring points freely like last season.

I've come to the conclusion, that while I don't think that RVP will prove to be good value for money this year, so you could do better without, its not worth the risk as EVERYONE else is going to have him!

My current Midlield is Yaya, Nolan, Hazard, Michu, Pienar.

Tough one, I don't like the loss of Pienaar but the second option does look stronger.

I can't wait until both Lukaku and Odemwingie are fit. Long is one of those strikers who's too good for the Championship but doesn't quite cut it for the PL - decent as a back up but I'd never consider him first choice.

I've always been in the Long-write-off brigade, but last season I thought I saw some distinct improvements on the game he brought to the Premiership.

Lukaku and Odemwingie however, are two players that reeks of class. World beaters when on form.

Can you tell me why the latter has been pushed out on the wings? Isn't that a waste?

He plays there for Nigeria - but yes he's much better in the middle up top. I think it's a case of too many options for upfront, and he plays *okay* on the right.

really hate when that happens. like gary lineker on the wing for barcelona 😐

i guess its a case of the manager wanting 80% in two positions instead of 90% and 70% ?

    Mornin' Guys.
    Please, rate my team. (GW4)

    Begovic (Krul)
    Rafeal, Mcauley, Baines, (Rangel, Demel)
    Sterling, Hazard, Michu, Dembele, YaYa
    RVP, Tevez, (Petric)

I was thinking of a 3-5-2 formation benching Petric(seeing his previous game) and Rangel.
Do you think otherwise? Suggestions are welcomed.
    Thanks guys.

I'd rather have Guthrie than Sterling. I think he'll see more minutes, and Liverpool sucks.

I don't like Tottenham players right now either, so I'd ditch Dembele.

Any clue when will Sunderland's postponed match be held? And which attacking players is/are better option(s)?

My only concern with Fletcher is his consistency (look at when he played for Wolves).

True, but Larsson is great service. I'm torn between Lambert and Fletcher atm. I'm going to give Petric is chance at home next week first.
