Just when we thought his appetite for a deal had been sated after a summer of frantic activity, Mark Hughes returned to the transfer market once more to snap up the services of Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old arrived just prior to the closure of the transfer window and has signed up on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee:

Amidst a dearth of new arrivals, the acquisition of Granero may prove to be one of Hughes’ canniest pieces of business over the last few months. The QPR boss was suitably delighted to welcome the Spaniard to his squad and clearly expects big things from “The Pirate”:

“He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not. He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do. He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

The Statistics

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Granero struggled to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out to Getafe for the 2007-08 season in order to gain top-flight experience. His campaign was a undoubted hit, with Granero helping his new side reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in addition to returning three goals and a couple of assists in La Liga. Madrid subsequently sold the midfielder to Getafe the following season, installing a buy-back option in his contract should Granero continue to flourish – 35 appearances, five goals and four assists later, his former club was convinced enough to shell out for his services in time for the 2009 campaign.

His return to Madrid proved frustrating once again, though, particularly under Jose Mourinho. While Granero featured 31 times for Manuel Pellegrini, returning three goals and four assists, The Special One’s arrival saw his game time reduced considerably. The midfielder made just 15 starts over his final two seasons, with 21 further appearances as a sub helping him grab a goal and five assists. Granero has featured for his country at every level from U16 to U21 but has yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

While question marks still remain over a number of the summer signings, it’s unlikely that Granero has moved from the Bernabeu to be a bench-warmer in London. He seems set to be a key figure in the QPR midfield for the season ahead, with a central midfield berth looking likely – while he’s also known for his work-ethic, a role alongside an industrious ball-winner such as Samba Diakite or Alejandro Faurlin would complement his passing ability perfectly.

This could afford Hughes the chance to move Ji-Sung Park to the right flank though, alternatively, Granero is versatile enough to play behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on such a scenario, with the Spaniard’s consistency of performance and unselfish style of play maybe even edging him ahead of Adel Taarabt in Hughes’ thoughts further up the pitch.

Much will depend on how quickly QPR can settle this season. With a single point from their opening three matches, they are clearly a work in progress and investment in their Fantasy assets has been mainly put on hold until the new boys start to click; Granero – even with relatively kind prices of 5.5 and 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively – is likely to be monitored from afar in the meantime, then.

With showdowns against Chelsea and Spurs immediately on the horizon, the short-term potential seems limited, though a run of fixtures from Gameweek 6-12 looks highly promising. QPR square up to the likes of (WHM, wba, EVE, RDG, SOT) over that period and if Hughes’ side are to pick up in performance, Granero’s midfield scheming could well be integral to their chances of success.

On what do you base this (serious question)? Take a look at this:

          CHANCES CONCEDED
Swansea 22 chances conceded in 3 games (1 away)
Norwich + Stoke 27 chances conceded in 3 games (2 away)
Wigan 28 chances in 3 games (1 away)
West Ham 31 chances in 3 games (1 away)
WBA 35 chances in 3 games (1 away)
          Sunderland 28 (42) chances in 2 games (1 away)

          BIG CHANCES CONCEDED
          Stoke 2
          Swansea + West Ham 2
          Sunderland 2 (3)
          WBA 6
          Norwich 7
          Wigan 8

Alright DZ I would love some of your insights into this squad:

    Jussi/Fed

    Hangeland, Fabio, Clyne, Cueller, RIDGEWELL
    Cazorla, NZogbia, Puncheon, KAGAWA, MICHU
    TEVEZ, RVP, Graham

    4.3 in bank

Capital Letters = players I have transferred in over first 3 GWs. (I have taken a 4 point hit each week and plan on doing the same this week).

Obviously N'Zog > Hazard is the transfer I have in mind for a hit after ditching Bale > Michu earlier in the week.

Any and all comments, suggestions or feedback welcomed. Thanks

looks like a good move for this week. i'd try to lay off on the 4pt hits a bit though unless really necessary

next week can you get baines in for fabio? if so i'd do that
then i'd downgrade puncheon to guthrie the following week and then the week after taht dump graham for lambert/fletcher/owen/berb

        Thanks TW

Steering clear of expensive defenders this year (change in tactic from season past). Guthrie will replace Puncheon when my WC is played (aiming for next international break) or when I can afford the transfer. Graham is now expendable as I have picked up Michu (finally) and really like the potential of Fletcher at SUN.

i think baines is the only one worth considering and having now (see the discussion below). besides that I think that you can have good defenders for 5.5 or under (a couple ars at 5.5 and many good options at 5.0)

ok that's fair. how much does puncheon cost though?

yeah same here! fletcher or lambert are my top targets to get in for graham in a couple weeks

Puncheon same value as Guthrie 4.4. Just been reading Baines discussion below, he is the only one I would consider breaking my tactic for based upon his Pens and FK duties. And the fact he provides more chances than anyone else.
Talking about Everton chances I am also considering Kagawa downgrade in the future to allow Graham>Jelavic.

              ahhh. okay.

yeah i've gotten him because he has great potential for cleanies, goals and assist if not two or three in the same week!

honestly i dont think jelavic is worth the money right now... bit expensive for my liking. and when i saw everton play united their most threatening players in my opinion were pienaar, afro and baines. at least for me jelavic seemed to disappear for large portions of the game....

if i were you i might downgrade kags to pienaar if you want everton converage and then upgrade graham to fletcher and keep the cash. or downgrade kags to hba and then do a strait swap graham to lambert

Four point hits thus far (points scored by the players the following gameweek)

        Aguero (0) and Ramires (1)> Tevez (12) and Kagawa (14 as C)

        Ivanovic (0) and Torres (0) > RVP (30 as C) and Ridgewell (7)

For those counting at home that is 1 point if I keep the same players without taking a hit versus 55 points (63 – 8 points) for those who came into my team.

I think these hits were worth it don’t you?

As Mark put it yest, ignore the fact that he is a defender, the 4pts per CS will be a bonus. Compare him to Valencia for example.

Most of us predicted he might have a bumper season again as he did 2 years ago and score +/- 170 pts(based on something like 4 goals/10 assists/10 CS/20 boners etc)

            that's a great point!

and compared to valencia he gets 1 more point per goal, and probably higher chance of bp's as many scoring defenders this year have gotten 2 or 3 bp's

If you take the 17 pts he has already and you say he plays another:
              27 games
              3 goals
              10 assist
              8 Cs
              15 bonus

Baines creates most scoring chances of any PLAYER, not defender- also takes free kicks and penalties for a top team. And the team is good defensively too. He is the best everton cover if you dont want to have more than 1 player- covers both offensive and defensive output

          I have:

          Foster/bego
          Baines/Simpson/Demel/Cuellar/Rangel
          Bale/Michu/Haz/Jarvis(not ask)/Guthrie

I think so yes. Sunderland has never really been a free scoring side. Sess has not shown any form like he had last year. Look, I'm sure SUnderland is a better side then last year with Fletch/sezz/mClean/Larsson/Aj in the mix. Without a doubt, but let's see how they go vs Pool.

Lambert also on peno's, 1m less and South looks like the Blackpool of a couple of seasons ago.

And for 7m I would want to play the player week in week out, Like with Baines. And i can't see Fletcher doing much week in week out.

Thanks for the input. I wanted to see how this next gameweek was to make my decision.

I could do a straight swap for Petric this week or next

or Downgrade Zabaleta and grab one of the two strikers next week.

          I'll probably just wait.

Good morning everyone. It's just after midnight here in America and I have quite the conundrum. Do I drop BALE? If so, for who? I'm interested in Van Persie for obvious reasons plus I need United coverage. I just want to keep value in my team.

    Friedel - Federici

Baines- Lescott- Hangeland - Demel - Clyne

    Bale - Hazard - Cazorla - Noble - Guthrie

    Tevez - Torres - Graham

    100.4 M value with .5 M in the bank.

    Thanks! 🙂

yeah but those transfers should definitely make up the 4pt hit and more plus will help your team value.

and that should keep value in your team because bale will probably fall and i recon rvp will just keep rising

btw you should downgrade lescott to a 5.0 defender (rigewell, rangel, saylor, boyce, etc) next week so you can upgrade noble the week after

Dzeko should be on the watchlist, Balotelli is out for a while and Dzeko would start.

He somehow scored 14 goals and got 6 assists in just 1509 minutes of game time last season, and among much of these minutes he was playing as a sub only...super efficient I would say.

Early days to make that decision IMO, Liverpool may not be a top team anymore but surely twice the team than Reading. If Sterling keeps getting PT than he will be gold- especially as Liverpools fixtures have been horrible.

Don't do that. Hazard and Cazorla could be season keepers. I trust Cazorla more.

Just do Bale to one of those three. Shame you can't get Pienaar.

I do not fully understand the rule of 25-men squad. By these easy explanation..

    - Each side has named a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfill the home grown player criteria, while rules state the remainder of the party must be home grown.
    - The teams can name up to 25 squad members, not including under-21 players.

    > What are the meaning of home grown? Just being British or the player has to be born in that city?
    > Either country or city, any team can then have up to 17 non-British players.. 😯

    Right?

Home grown should mean that the player has spent at least 2 years in the teams academy IMO.

"Each club's 25-man squad should have a minimum of eight homegrown players who - regardless of age or nationality - spent three years (or a total of 36 months) in the youth system of a club in England or Wales before they reached the age of 21.

A club can have fewer than eight homegrown players, but this would reduce the size of their senior squad. Only 17 'foreign' players are permitted.

An Under-21 player is defined as being born on or after January 1, 1991. Clubs can use an unlimited number of Under-21 players in addition to their 25-man squad.

Clubs with fewer than 25 players in their squad are still permitted to sign free agents."
