Just when we thought his appetite for a deal had been sated after a summer of frantic activity, Mark Hughes returned to the transfer market once more to snap up the services of Esteban Granero from Real Madrid. The 25-year-old arrived just prior to the closure of the transfer window and has signed up on a four-year deal, for an undisclosed fee:

Amidst a dearth of new arrivals, the acquisition of Granero may prove to be one of Hughes’ canniest pieces of business over the last few months. The QPR boss was suitably delighted to welcome the Spaniard to his squad and clearly expects big things from “The Pirate”:

“He is a great player, first and foremost. You don’t play at a club like Real Madrid if you’re not. He has been there from the age of nine, so this has been a huge decision for him. He is very well regarded there and for him to leave a club of that stature to come to us shows the belief he has in what we are trying to do. He has got great energy and is technically very gifted, as you would expect from a Real Madrid player. He is very comfortable on the ball and is an all-round excellent midfielder, which we will benefit from.”

The Statistics

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Granero struggled to break into the first-team squad and was loaned out to Getafe for the 2007-08 season in order to gain top-flight experience. His campaign was a undoubted hit, with Granero helping his new side reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup in addition to returning three goals and a couple of assists in La Liga. Madrid subsequently sold the midfielder to Getafe the following season, installing a buy-back option in his contract should Granero continue to flourish – 35 appearances, five goals and four assists later, his former club was convinced enough to shell out for his services in time for the 2009 campaign.

His return to Madrid proved frustrating once again, though, particularly under Jose Mourinho. While Granero featured 31 times for Manuel Pellegrini, returning three goals and four assists, The Special One’s arrival saw his game time reduced considerably. The midfielder made just 15 starts over his final two seasons, with 21 further appearances as a sub helping him grab a goal and five assists. Granero has featured for his country at every level from U16 to U21 but has yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

While question marks still remain over a number of the summer signings, it’s unlikely that Granero has moved from the Bernabeu to be a bench-warmer in London. He seems set to be a key figure in the QPR midfield for the season ahead, with a central midfield berth looking likely – while he’s also known for his work-ethic, a role alongside an industrious ball-winner such as Samba Diakite or Alejandro Faurlin would complement his passing ability perfectly.

This could afford Hughes the chance to move Ji-Sung Park to the right flank though, alternatively, Granero is versatile enough to play behind a lone striker in a 4-4-1-1. Fantasy managers will be keeping a close eye on such a scenario, with the Spaniard’s consistency of performance and unselfish style of play maybe even edging him ahead of Adel Taarabt in Hughes’ thoughts further up the pitch.

Much will depend on how quickly QPR can settle this season. With a single point from their opening three matches, they are clearly a work in progress and investment in their Fantasy assets has been mainly put on hold until the new boys start to click; Granero – even with relatively kind prices of 5.5 and 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game respectively – is likely to be monitored from afar in the meantime, then.

With showdowns against Chelsea and Spurs immediately on the horizon, the short-term potential seems limited, though a run of fixtures from Gameweek 6-12 looks highly promising. QPR square up to the likes of (WHM, wba, EVE, RDG, SOT) over that period and if Hughes’ side are to pick up in performance, Granero’s midfield scheming could well be integral to their chances of success.

Why won't he score 20, on what basis have you concluded this ?
When Swansea score he' ll be involved and at an initial value of 6.5 - there isn't too many mf in that bracket that can return 15-20 goals.

I think it's difficult for a player in a team likely to finish in the bottom half to score 20 goals and because he has scored 4 goals already people start making over assessments. Let's have the period when Swansea's form drops along with the odd injury, resting, suspension, period out of form and then a target of around 12-14 seems more likely and perhaps still slightly high. Is Michu even on pens to help his tally. Very, very few strikers hit 20 premier league goals without the assistance of pens, bar Torres a few years back.

The key with him could be working out if there is a time to switch to another player with better fixtures, to bank your profit and then pick him up again for the same price you sold once the hoards have followed suit.

      Although that might never happen....

Having played the WC earlier this week, I am buying players who may rise 0.2 with the sole purpose of selling them at a 0.1 profit. Example is McAuley who I don't want. By game time I expect to have made up to 0.4 which I will then spend on the final lineup. One of the benefits of playing the WC in the long break.

        exactly.

i'm activating my WC in the two week break after GW7. the news boys in the league should have had time to gel with their new teams and, hopefully, give some price rises.

Concern for me is that, by GW7, a lot of wildcards will have already gone. As we have found out, the best time to wildcard in order to max out on team value is when everyone else is doing it. I think those of us in a position to save it would be better off waiting and hoping for the big DGW towards the end of the season.

Sterling is a talent but given the current LIV situation, it's a bit much to expect him to deliver all the goods.

there are some better 5m options about.

Been mulling this over this evening. Just need as many opinion as I can get

Bale > Morrison and Torres > RVP

Is it worth it with my team:

    Friedel-Federici

    Baines-Lescott-Hangeland-Demel-Clyne

    Bale-Hazard-Cazorla-Noble-Guthrie

    Tevez-Torres-Graham

Yeah, and you can argue about my choice of football club, but I used a team on FIFA no one else every really used back when I first started watching the league in the 08-09 season, absolutely hated United, and I fell in love.

Even more so when David Silva came to the club. Now, City Til I Die! And I'll be honest with you, I didn't know they had so much money to spend the first season I watched.

you could argue about my choice of football club too. however I didn't really follow european football much before barca played a friendly against the sounders. i was at the game (6th row!!!!! - only thing possibly better was when I was in the 1st row in the Berneabeu RM vs APOEL CL game this year :D) and instantly fell in love with barca and the way they play. I kinda knew they were a big name in europe before but honestly it wasn't until I started following them after that game that I realized how big and successful they actually are/were. still love the way they play and their philosophy about focusing so much on their youth academy

really? awesome. zakuaini is back :D.

Yeah, when the vast majority of your team is from your own academy, all you can really do is admire it. Liverpool actually have a few decent youngsters coming through (of course this was after we hired some people from your youth system to run ours 😉 ) I much prefer Barca to Madrid. 1st row! I'm so jealous. It must've been an amazing experience.

yeah and its nice to see youngsters like tello and cuenca come up and do well! a big signing is always nice (i'm hoping for neymar, think he could be deadly with all our other attacking threats) but its just as fun to see youngsters come up and start to blossom

haha ;). whatever it takes. would love to see more teams improve their academies instead of splash tons of cash like man city, psg, real madrid, etc. hopefully you guys improve over the next year or two!

yeah it was amazing as I said above. just watching the highlights again (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpx750_highlights-real-madrid-apoel-nicosia-5-2-champions-league-04-04-2012_sport) and can't believe I was there!! I was almost right behind ronaldo when he scored that fk

It'll be very tough 🙁 I hope management can make some good decisions. Seems the only good decisions are made for the Coyotes and dbacks, although I'm starting to question management after they've fallen 11 games back now.

I'm still pissed about how they brought in old Shaq instead of then defensive player of the year, Marcus Camby. That's something the Suns have always lacked! Defense!

Interesting way of looking at it, I suppose the potential for points is probably on McClean's side, I can't see Pog scoring a brace against a Spurs side that needs a win and a performance. But I suppose it's more likely that McClean might grab a goal/assist and potential BP's from it. Thanks for the advice.

Sell Ivan and you have lots of cash. If you really want a Chelsea def then Cole is nailed on. I just think Ivan is a rotation risk now, and you're paying a premium for what has already happened.

ARS look great at the back, so assuming you want a def for the season then Gibbs at 5.5m gives you money for another solid defender. I know they have tough fixtures but sometimes you have to ride it out and use the transfers elsewhere.

Hey i don't know if you lot saw this but i'm bored so i'll repost :

So lets list down a few names that could be mentioned in the future that are not already a part of the so called knee-jerk brigade.

Chamberlain (7.5) – If he nails down that spot on the wing in place of Walcott. Unlikely though.
Giroud (8.8) – Major gut feel about this one.
Dembele (6.0) – Cheap Tottenham coverage in the ‘doosra’ mould
Shelvey (5.4) – Looks like he has a good shot on him. Influenced the Liv-Ars game very positively once he came on.
Silva (9.6-9.8) – Looks to be finding his form.
Aguero (11-11.1) – No explanation needed.
Valencia (8.9) – Most nailed on from the United midfield, imo.
Ba (7.7) – My bet for most efficient ’3rd’ striker. Newcastle just need to find form.
Snodgrass (5.9) – Loved every bit i saw of him in the Tottenham game.
Zamora (6.4) – If Hughes gets it right, and from what i saw of Granero, he could be a massive pick.
Granero (5.5) – On set pieces. Looked quality on his debut.
Kebe (4.9) & McAnuff (5.2) – Reading have some quality wingers on the cheap. That said, Guthrie at 4.4 and in the hole, you can’t look further.
Lallana & Ramirez (6) – Southampton look good for their goals. An alternative to Lambert.
Peter Crouch (6.5) – Could be useful when Stokes fixtures look better. Adam is still a tad bit expensive.
Sessegnon (7.9) – OOP with better service. His price is a factor working against him.
Dempsey (9.3) – A true sleeper. If he finds form, could easily dispatch Hazard & Cazorla as the big 2 in midfield.
Morisson (6.0) & Lukaku (6.5) – If Wbrom continue their form & if Lukaku nails down his spot, he would be absolutely sensational imo.
Di Santo (5.5) – Found form at the end of last season and seems to have started from there at the beginning of this season. One to watch out for.

Just wanted to divert attention from the obvious pick flying around. Any more?

      nice!

agree on the dempsey one. if spurs hit form dempsey and bale could be the must haves in mf (remember the spurs holy trinity of last season?)

what about any of lamps/oscar/mata/gerrard/siggy? doubt it but they could be potential differentials should they hit form

great summary, I hope your gut feeling about Giroud proves to be correct. I'm desperate for him to find some form against Southampton! At 8.8 I can't imagine many will go for him for a good while, unless he scores a hat-trick, in which case, I'll be very happy.

Pity about Sessegnon being so expensive based on his form last season. He might be affected FPL wise by all the other attacking options Sunderland have now.

Will be very interesting if Silva finds form and whether anyone will dare fit him in with Hazard and Cazorla being the favourite expensive mids at the moment.

Finally...Morrison for WBA, with their fixtures, could be a real winner.

Fletcher (7.0) has the potential to out perform that price bracket and be played most weeks. I like the way O'Neil is so predictable with his wingers and big man in the middle. So many good mid-priced mids that he might be squeezed in as the 3rd forward.

Can't fault the FWDs, but it shows in the weakness of the other positions. In particular you'll have to play some awful MFs - need to upgrade NZog. DEF is OK, although there are some cheap options I prefer - Demel, Gunter, Clyne. I would also downgrade Vorm - a 2nd 4.5 like Begovic will rotate well with Jaaskalainen.

That is a poor WC team IMO. Defence is not good. Double Swansea midfield is overkill, either have Michu OR Dyer. Why would you possibly pick N'Zogbia when on WC? Kaca won't get many starts either.

Alright then - basic idea was to take Big Dunc's spot the differential and turn it into some kind of sub competition. Each week you would get 3 picks who had to be under a certain % of ownership (would have to look and see what is reasonable I imagined 5%) and under a certain budget (just so you can't pick Lampard, Gerrard etc. who aren't owned because of their high price). Now I don't have a wordpress site or a clue how to use it but what do you think?

Which forward line do you prefer?

Hazard Cazorla Michu Pienaar Guthrie; RVP Tevez Berbatov

Hazard Cazorla Michu Pienaar Nolan; RVP Tevez Pogrebnyak (allowing a 4.0 upgrade to 4.5)

      thanks lads. unequivocal response there.

wonder if the .9 on berbatov does more good in defence if i were to downgrade to Lambert

berbatov on form however could be fpl insanity embodied

certainly an interesting option, but should he get dropped or whatever - then what?

you would have to replace him with Reading/Soton defenders, causing an unbalance in your squad
