Southampton rounded off their transfer business for the summer last week by snapping up the highly-rated Gaston Ramirez from Bologna on a four-year contract. The 21-year-old moves to St Mary’s for an undisclosed fee after the Saints – in a clear statement of intent for the season ahead – beat off several leading clubs to acquire his services:

Nigel Adkins was clearly delighted upon completion of the surprise deal, with Ramirez expected to be installed immediately into the Saints first XI ahead of the Gameweek 4 trip to Arsenal:

A lot of hard work has gone in from the Football Club with a lot of negotiations behind the scenes to get this deal done. Great credit to everyone because we have a young, exciting talent joining us who is one of the best around. The Chairman has gone and backed this deal big-time with the financial outlay, and what we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary’s. There is a lot of ambition at the Football Club and we are all delighted that Gaston is going to come and join us.

The Statistics

Ramirez’s career began in his native country as an 18-year-old with Penarol. The winger remained there for a season and a half, with six goals in 20 league matches helping his side win the Uruguayan Primera Division in 2009/10. His displays quickly caught the eye of Bologna, with the Italian side snapping up the youngster for a bargain €2.5m in August 2010.

Installed as a key member of their first XI, Ramirez produced four goals and a couple of assists over 16 starts and nine sub appearances in his first season is Serie A. The 2011/12 campaign saw Ramirez step up in performance, though, helping the club to a ninth placed finish, with eight goals and five assists over 33 league appearances indicative of his burgeoning talent. In terms of internationals, he has turned out for his country at U20 and U23 level and represented the senior side on 10 occasions.

The Prospects

The Uruguayan’s close control and superb dribbling ability, allied with a keen eye for a long range strike, will considerably bolster Adkins’ offence. Able to play on either wing or in “the holeâ€, Ramirez should fit seamlessly into the Saints’ new 4-3-2-1 system, with a role on the flank in support of Rickie Lambert looking likely.

While Fantasy owners of Adam Lallana have seen the midfielder’s potential dip after a couple of appearances in central midfield, Ramirez looks assured of a more attacking berth, with his arrival set to have a major knock-on effect on the game time of Jason Puncheon. Ramirez’s set-piece capabilities could also see him rival Lallana and Lambert for a share of direct free-kicks; another factor to consider when assessing his potential.

Despite three defeats so far, Southampton clearly have goals in them. Braces against City and United are indicative of their threat up front and suggest they may be better suited to counter more attack-minded teams – a fact backed up by their inability to register a goal in the Gameweek 2 home defeat at the hands of Wigan. Lambert, with strikes against both Manchester clubs, has already shown he can flourish and if Ramirez can hit the ground running, he could well offer us a decent mid-price options for those Fantasy managers looking for alternatives to the current template midfields.

Coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League, the new boy costs the same as Lallana, though the Sky Sports game has handed him a 5.5 valuation; the priciest of Southampton’s midfield. In the short-term, the fixture list is relatively reasonable; trips to Arsenal and Everton look tough, though home clashes against Villa and Fulham in the next four will surely offer Adkins’ side the chance of producing. Already adrift at the bottom of the league, Southampton desperately need to start picking up the points their performances have perhaps merited – Ramirez may well be key to their chances of doing so.

Count of Monte Hristo - I replied on the 1st page but to keep it simple ill post again here -

I think we'll win it 3-1. Our defence is awful but out attack is cracking.

Not going mate. Will be a good game though. Loving your confidence. You don't fear Ivanovic, Vidic, Kolarov and Dzeko? I think we will struggle massively at set pieces against that lot? All depends if we take our chances or not but I agree we are a threat in attack. Just hope we play with confidence though otherwise it's business as usual.

I was at Easter Road for the Australia game and we played great expansive attacking football. If we can do that again i think we'll be alright. pffftt, youre forgetting we've got Webster and Caldwell. Berras mrs is due any day now, hopefully she can hold the wee thing in for a week or so 😉

Very true, I am optimistic though. If we dont win against Sebia we need to beat Wales in Cardiff imo. In fairness we should be able to beat anyone at Hamden.

Haha, we have no decent centre halves. I blame Danny Wilsons greed personally. Grant Hanley is our future. God help us.

I assume it'll be similar atmosphere to the Scotland Wales 6 Nations matches, i.e. super friendly. Best fixture in the tournament in terms of fan banter. Love the Welshies

Berra is available as wee girl born yesterday. Bit worried about us at the back esp if Webster plays. Might happen as Caldwell could play in midfield. Also Vidic has retired and Dzeko is Bosnian. They will be decent though but I'm confident as we can get a win! You going to the game KOL?

I could potentially go with Ade Tevez and someone third. After GW5 I don't like Utd fixtures and hopefully Rooney will be back. I am saving my WC for something like that. If Ade and AVB shows us form it could be genius movel

I will have 3 big hitters in midfield then

So, what do you plan to do with Ade?? I got him in last week, before the Norwich game.. I think he'll start against Reading but I don't have Hazard or Torres.. Dont feel confident going into the GW without either.. And no point getting rid of Kagawa before a home game, is there?? Any advices??

What transfer have you made already? I'd try and get Hazard in for Kagawa, avoids getting Torres. I'm keeping him for now, AVB would be a fool not to start him now. If he doesn't start at Reading, I will downgrade afterwards.

It really depends on wheather u want to keep either, personally I think he won't make it due to the slow down in the market but if things speed up early next week he could get there, its a big risk thats only worth taking if you have no interest in the current 2. I have only 1 mid slot free for money making and I gave it to yaya before his last rise. The only other mid that has a great chance is santi carzola as I believe he'll rise by the weekend and get alot of transfers closer to deadline. Sorry for the ramble

I've been wondering this too. Certainly don't sell Dyer for him, but he just might have a slight better chance than Nolan now Carroll's out. I have Nolan (bought at 6.0) and Toure (bought at 8.1) and will probably chance them instead.

Yeah I could cash in then. And if he doesn't perform in 2 games in a row the people will loose patience with him and he might fall in price actually. Also he will be 50% owned and no point in having player like that in the team when there are alternatives with better fixtures. Also he isn't captain choice.

Also the lad I could bring someone like MClean or HBA will rise in mean time IMO

    am i mad?
    i am considering Gleny J from L'pool
(wc), brackets include how much they have risen during my ownership
    i currently have
    Foster, Ethridge
McAuley (+.1) ivanovic (+.1) Ried, Demel (+.1) and gibbs who i just raded in for Jenkinson after the double price rise
    mids
    Hazard(+.2) Michu(+ enough to keep), Nolan (+.1) dyer(+.1), Barfa (+.1)
    Torres (+.1), Tevez (+.8) lambert
which means i have 98mil team value +4.2mil

i understand i need double rises to legitmize money i do 😀 which is why i need ried, ivanovic, nolan, dyer and lambert to rise by another .1 each 😀 as i can't see them in my final WC team moving forward

    my team i wanna have
    Hart, (4mil keeper)
Gibbs,McAuley, Glen J(/ liverpool defence), Cuellar(or distin from eve/Vidic from united), Demel
Hazard,Michu,Barfa, Maloney, (one of: Pienar, Guthrie, Sterling, Caz, Kags or maybe Adam Johnson sunderland)
Torres Tevez (one of Giroud, Pog, Lambert, Kone, Jelly)
    am i crazy!?

Personally, I'd wait until they actually win a game before committing your fantasy resources. No-one else has them so you're not missing out if they suddenly give United a pasting.

But there's a lot to be said for valour in this game (ask ENR) so if you want stick your c0ck on the block and triple-pool for the glory of it, I won't try to talk you out of it 🙂

Come on, RVP is fixture proof. He proved that last season. Ade is inconsistent and won't come near to out scoring RVP. You right gower that teve and aguaro will score but like I said its too much in one basket.

In the Serbian newspapers there is an article (apparently based on Rooney's authobiographical book) that Rooney likes and wants to play in the midfield. Ok, nothing new, we knew that, but funny how this impacts the thinking of FPL player. For me this means - stay away from Rooney.

Ok just considering as an option. I think we can find our cash better spent in that fixtures. Podolski why not? Jelly why not? Demps as third big midfield beside Santi and Hazard?

I am saying that there is better value when those fixtures are gonna happen. I will find a forward/ midfielder with better fixtures in that period which will match him or even out score him. Also beside the STO game he isn't captaincy candidate too

It really doesn't make any sense. And those fixtures aren't bad at all. Liverpool look far from solid atm, Spurs record at OT is embarrassing, Newcastle will be tough, Stoke at OT I don't think so, Chelsea tough game (RVP hat-trick at the Bridge last season springs to mind) and Arsenal at OT who haven't done much damage at OT in years.

Difficult isn't it. I have both of them. Someone on here yesterday suggested because Reid scored that may be noticed more by the masses.

I have 9 players excluding RVP / Hazard / Michu / Tevez all on .1 so suppose you have to stick with the guys you chose and wait for that extra .1.

        Cheers all.

My WC defence is quite fluid. I intend getting in Baines, Cuellar and Staylor (none of which I have yet..) so can shift them around alot.

Midfield is trickier. Currently have Dyer Barfa and Toure for the price (though may keep Barfa), so need the other two to rise by 0.1 to make some dough.

Think I'll swap to Reid, as can't see Rafa rising again before GW4, as he didn't do much GW3 to turn peoples attention.
